Plateau Killings: As the death toll rises to 42, Sen. Gyang cries out that FG abandoned our people

0

Senator Istifanus Gyang of Plateau North said on Wednesday that the killing of scores of people and destruction of property in Yelwan Zangam community in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State as a result of a midnight attack by suspected herdsmen clearly shows the state has been abandoned by the federal government.

Our correspondent has learned that the death toll has risen from 35 to 42 as of the time of filing this report.

“On the night of Tuesday, August 24, 2021, terror was visited on Yelwan Zangam of Anaguta community in Jos North with over 35 persons killed, some of whom were burned beyond recognition,” Gyang said through his Special Assistant Media and Protocol, Musa Ashoms.

Gyang described the serial and ongoing terror attacks on Plateau State communities as “gravely disturbing and outraged,” with thousands of lives brutally massacred over the years and still continuing.

“The Plateau situation is that of a people abandoned to their fate by the Federal Government,” he says.

There will be no sympathy! There is no empathy! There is no help or attention for the affected communities! He bemoaned the lack of a statement and outcry from “appropriate quarters” in response to the recent massacre in Yelwan Zangam, Jos.

Gyang has repeatedly stated that he opposes threats to the lives of all citizens, saying, “NO citizen should be made to suffer or lose his or her life simply because of ethnicity or religion.”

He lamented, “It is thus disheartening that Plateau people are targeted, isolated, and deemed good only to be killed and massacred.”

“I’m therefore calling on government to demonstrate sincerity in securing the lives of all citizens, Plateau people included, and take all necessary and decisive action to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators and ensure that the lives and livelihoods of all law abiding citizens are protected,” Gyang, who is the Deputy Chairman Senate Committee on Defence, said.

The lawmaker expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and offered comfort to the Anaguta people and the state as a whole.

COVID-19 vaccination: FG is requesting govs assistance as the vaccine arrives in 29 states

Following the distribution of moderna vaccines in 29 states across the country, the federal government has urged state governors to provide the necessary oversight and resources to ensure that the vaccines are kept at the proper temperature.

Dr. Faisal Shuaib, Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), made the announcement at a press conference on Tuesday.

“Now that the vaccines have arrived in the states, we are counting on our governors to continue to provide the necessary oversight and resources to ensure that these vaccines are secured and maintained at the required temperatures, and that all eligible persons are mobilized to access the vaccines in order to protect themselves, their families, and their communities from COVID-19,” he stated.

Shuaib explained that after the vaccines were certified by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), the deployment of the moderna vaccines to states was delayed because “unlike the AstraZeneca vaccine, the Moderna vaccine did not come with complete barcoding.” And it’s critical for us to be able to track and trace the vaccines.”

“Nigeria was the first country to use Track and Trace to monitor the movement and use of the vaccine,” Shuaib says. We know where each vaccine vial is in the country at all times.

“This takes a long time because it requires careful packaging, serialization, and end-user follow-up.

“We also want to make sure that any state to which we send the vaccine is fully prepared to receive it.

“Readiness” in this case refers to the state’s ultra-cold chain equipment being fully operational and capable of storing vaccines at the required temperatures.

“States must also have backup storage facilities, such as walk-in cold rooms, walk-in freezers, or chest freezers, with a reliable 24-hour power supply.

“In addition, the States must have completed the training of health-care workers who will monitor the equipment and vaccines.”

Dr Walter Kazadi Mulombo, the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Representative in Nigeria, insisted that the vaccines approved by NAFDAC and WHO are safe and effective.

He did, however, emphasize the importance of ongoing and extensive media engagement in order to raise the necessary awareness for Nigerians to come out and get vaccinated.

The Nigeria Defence Academy has established a board of inquiry to determine the remote and immediate cause(s) of the security breach that led to Monday’s attack, as well as to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Major General Benjamin Sawyerr, Director of Defence Information, said in a press release on Wednesday that the board of inquiry was set up by the NDA authorities on the Chief of Defence Staff’s directive.
Any personnel found guilty, according to the DDI, will face sanctions.

Meanwhile, the DHQ has reacted angrily to reports in an online news outlet that personnel on duty at the NDA’s CCTV monitoring room were sleeping when bandits attacked the officers’ quarters, killing two officers and kidnapping one more.

“The Nigerian Armed Forces wishes to state categorically that the allegation is false, and thus challenge the Cable Online to publish forthwith verifiable proof of personnel sleeping during the incident,” according to the DDI.

“It is thus critical to warn the Cable Online media against being used as a propaganda tool by enemies of our beloved country. The Cable Online should not consciously or unconsciously collaborate with these unscrupulous elements in spreading unverified stories about the unfortunate event at NDA Kaduna, tarnishing the good image and reputation of AFN personnel in the eyes of the general public.

“It’s worth noting that the AFN is a professional force made up of highly trained personnel dedicated to protecting the lives and property of all Nigerians,” says the statement.

Mbappe’s transfer fee has been set by PSG, despite Real Madrid’s interest

According to Le Parisien, Paris Saint-Germain wants €220 million from Real Madrid for Kylian Mbappe.

Mbappe intends to leave the Ligue 1 giants this summer for Spain.

Despite initially refusing to sell the 22-year-old, PSG is now reconsidering their stance.

Madrid made their first offer of €160 million earlier this week, but it was turned down.

PSG is thought to be demanding €220 million for the France international, who is in the final year of his contract.

PSG’s sporting director Leonardo confirmed Mbappe’s desire to leave the club before the transfer window closes on Wednesday.

Leonardo, on the other hand, chastised Madrid’s conduct during the transfer negotiations.

“We can’t change our plans in the last week of the window,” he said. We will not stop him from leaving if he insists, but only on our terms.

“I can’t confirm the figures, but it’s in the vicinity of that.” It’s a bargain compared to what we paid. But it’s the way Madrid did it that irritates us the most.”

Senior police officers from Gambia, Ghana and Liberia can attend NIPS training slots offered by the IGP

0

Senior police officers from Ghana, Liberia, and the Gambia have been given slots at the prestigious National Institute of Police Studies (NIPS) in Abuja for training.

This is despite the fact that, in addition to the ten participants who graduated from the recently completed training, ten more senior officers from Sierra Leone are expected to complete the next batch of training.

Usman Baba Alkali, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), made the announcement at the National Institute of Police Studies’ (NIPS) Strategic Leadership and Command Course (SLCC) 3/2021 graduation ceremony in Abuja yesterday.

IGP Baba, who was represented by David Folowiyo, the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of ICT, revealed that plans have been finalized to expand the Institute’s scope of attendance.

“We’re getting closer to realizing the Institute’s vision and mission.

“We are accepting the ECOWAS sub-vision region’s and the African continent’s plan.

“We’re broadening the Institute’s scope of attendance. For the next course, we anticipate another group of ten participants from Sierra Leone.

“We are also expecting more officers from Ghana, Gambia, and Liberia from the West African Sub-region. “NIPS is here to stay,” he declared.

The IGP, on the other hand, thanked the Ministry of Police Affairs for its continued support since the Institute’s inception.

He also urged members of the National Assembly to continue to support the institute by providing the funding it requires to carry out its mission.

Dr. Ambrose Michael Sovula, the Inspector General of Sierra Leone Police, praised IGP Baba Alkali for his friendship and provision of slots for officers from Sierra Leone to attend the Institute’s course.

He reflected on Nigeria’s role as a big brother to his country over the years, insisting that the relationship will continue to grow.

Prior to the graduation ceremony, IGP Usman Alkali Baba and his Sierra Leonean counterpart, Dr Ambrose Michael Sovula, signed a Cooperation Agreement at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

Those behind the NDA attack may be attempting to embarrass Buhari – Presidency

0

Garba Shehu, President Muhammadu Buhari’s spokesman, claims the recent attack on the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) was a ruse to embarrass his boss.

In the early hours of Tuesday, suspected bandits attacked the NDA facility in Kaduna.

Two officers were killed, and another was kidnapped by the gunmen.

Shehu said the presidency expects the military to thoroughly investigate and disclose what happened in an interview on Channels Television on Wednesday night.

He also claimed that the incident was politically motivated and that those responsible wanted to embarrass Buhari’s administration, despite the military’s “major successes” in the fight against insurgency and banditry.

“It has been condemned by the president. He is dissatisfied with the situation. It is now up to the military authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and determine what happened.

“However, there are so many scenarios being painted. Is this a true criminal attempt to infringe on that military institution’s sanctity? Was this a case of petty theft? Is it a political issue? Is someone trying to make the government look bad by doing this?

“We’ve had a lot of success in the past. Take a look at how Boko Haram is disintegrating in the north; they have surrendered. All of the victories, even in the north-west, show that these bandits are being hunted down in large numbers.

“So, in a climate — a political climate — where people are trying to make political capital out of this unfortunate incident, you don’t rule anything in or out,” he explained.
