FCTA raids criminal hideouts in Gwarimpa, arresting 49 suspects

0

The Ministerial Task Team on City Sanitation of the Nigerian Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) raided criminal hideouts in Gwarimpa Estate and arrested 49 suspects.

They were apprehended on Thursday as part of the ongoing demolition operation at Yan Kasuwa on Gwarimpa Estate’s 6th Avenue.

The operation was led by Task Team chairman Ikharo Attah, who said the 49 suspected criminals stopped passers-by and robbed them of their belongings after the joint team finished its work.

“Most of the criminals took advantage of the cleanup exercise and went on a looting spree, disposing of the belongings of passers-by,” he said.

“This demonstrates why we demolish illegal structures; illegal structures, shanties, and fences can be found almost everywhere in Gwarimpa Estate; these are criminal hideouts that we will not allow to remain.”

Attah expressed regret for the growing number of shanties in the Federal Capital Territory and warned that the current administration, led by Malam Muhammad Bello, would not allow illegality to become the norm.

The chairman of the Task Team condemned the post-demonstration looting and assault on innocent residents.

“They forcibly collected my mobile phone and foodstuff with cash in the vehicle while I was driving to pass through this place,” said one of the victims, Mohammed Awwal, an Immigration officer who spoke on behalf of others. One of those arrested has been identified by me.”

The zones will be implemented in 18 African countries, including Nigeria, according to Lamin Barrow, Director General of the African Development Bank’s Nigeria Country Department.

“The Bank and its development partners are mobilizing $520 million to co-finance the first phase of the program in Nigeria, which will be implemented in phases across six geopolitical zones,” Barrow said. The SAPZ program will be open to all 36 states in Nigeria as well as the Federal Capital Territory.

“The zone model is an explicit industrialization strategy to transform poor rural spaces into zones of prosperity, stem rural-urban migration, end human insecurity induced by herders-farmers clashes, and provide employment to Nigerian youth,” said Prof. Oyebanji Oyeleran-Oyeyinka, Senior Adviser on Industrialization to the President of the AfDB.

BREAKING: DSS barred an American lawyer and others from visiting Kanu

According to Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Lead Counsel for Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, the Department of State Services prevented Kanu from seeing his lawyers on Thursday.

In a statement released on Friday, Ejiofor claimed that the secret police prevented him and other lawyers, including IPOB’s US attorney, Bruce Fein, from meeting with Kanu.

He described the refusal as a violation of a Federal High Court order in Abuja directing the DSS to allow Kanu’s lawyers to visit him twice a week.

NDDC audit report reveals 13,000 abandoned projects in the Niger Delta: Akpabio

0

Sen. Godswill Akpabio, Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, presented the Forensic Audit Report on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) on Thursday, noting that 13,000 projects in the region had been abandoned.

President Muhammadu Buhari received the report from Akpabio via the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, in Abuja.

“The audit committee’s report revealed that the Niger Delta has over 13,000 abandoned projects, and even before the report was submitted, some contractors returned to site on their own and completed about 77 road projects.

“I thank Mr. President and all those who supported and ensured the exercise’s success, despite its tumultuous history.”

He emphasized that the exercise was not conducted to persecute anyone, but rather to ensure that the massive sums of money invested in the area each year are justified.

He bemoaned the fact that, despite successive governments’ efforts through the creation of various interventionist programs and projects, the region had remained backward since 1958.

In a summary of the report, the Lead Forensic Auditor, Alhaji Kabir Ahmed, stated that the team recommended managerial and structural changes, the most important of which is the downsizing of the NDDC’s board.

He stated that in order to save money, the team recommended that members of the team be appointed on a part-time basis going forward.

I sacked Nanono and Mamman as ministers for the following reasons – Buhari

0

President Muhammadu Buhari fired Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Mohammed Sabo Nanono and his power counterpart, Engr. Sale Mamman, on Wednesday.

The president made the announcement at the Presidential Villa Abuja’s weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, which he chaired.

He explained that the decision was made to re-energize the cabinet in order to strengthen its ability to build on previous accomplishments.

“I have personally met with the departing members to thank them for their contributions to cabinet discussions and the invaluable services rendered to the nation,” President Buhari said at the FEC meeting, announcing the ministers’ dismissal. Today is effectively their last day in the Federal Executive Council, and I wish them all the best in their future endeavors.”

In accordance with the constitution, he said substantive nominations would be made to fill the consequential vacancies in Kano and Taraba states.

As a result, the president announced a minor reshuffle in the cabinet he appointed on August 21, 2019.

Dr. Mohammad Mahmood Abubakar, the Minister of Environment, has been reassigned to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, while Abubakar D. Aliyu, the Minister of State for Works and Housing, has been appointed as the Minister of Power.

The changes, according to President Buhari, follow a “tradition of subjecting our projects and programs implementation to independent and critical self-review” during cabinet meetings and retreats.

“On Wednesday, August 21, 2019, the current Federal Executive Council was sworn in following a rigorous retreat to bring returning and new members up to speed on the accomplishments, challenges, and lessons learned from my first term in office, as well as to highlight the 9 priority areas of government for the second term.

“Through sector reporting during Cabinet meetings and Retreats, the tradition of subjecting our projects and programs implementation to independent and critical self-review has taken firm roots two years and some months into the second term.

“These significant review steps have aided in identifying and strengthening weak areas, closing gaps, strengthening governance cohesion and synergy, managing the economy, and improving the delivery of public goods to Nigerians.

“I must commend this cabinet for displaying unrivaled resilience in assisting the government in navigating the disruption to global systems and governance caused by COVID-19’s emergence shortly after inauguration. Because the traditional mode was changed, the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting was not spared.

“As we all know, change is the only constant in any human endeavor, and as this administration enters its critical second term, I believe it is critical to reinvigorate this cabinet in a way that will deepen its capacity to consolidate legacy accomplishments,” he said.

CNPP retaliates

In a statement released Wednesday in Abuja, the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) applauded the ministers’ dismissal and urged Buhari to overhaul his cabinet further.

The CNPP’s Secretary General, Willy Ezugwu, issued a statement urging the president to “hasten action in overhauling his cabinet as there are many underperforming ministers as well as heads of agencies and parastatals still in government.”

“Like we have constantly advised Mr. President to replace some non-performing members of his cabinet, we also urge Mr. President to replace some of his advisers,” the umbrella body of all registered political parties and political associations in Nigeria added.

“In our opinion, the President’s information managers, including the Minister of Information and Culture, Chief Lai Mohammed, and the presidential spokesman, Malam Garba Shehu, who have done their best, should take a bow and return home immediately.

“The CNPP believes that there are still areas in which the President’s administration can improve its performance if his cabinet is urgently rejigged to put square poles in square holes.”

“And, beyond redeployment of some already-exhausted ministers, the CNPP advises President Buhari to look for young technocrats and more innovative citizens, even outside his party, for appointment to ensure that he succeeds in the remaining two years of his presidency,” the CNPP advised.

PDP is on the move.

However, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has characterized the president’s dismissal of the ministers as a ruse to hide his failures in office.

“Our party is also investigating the true reason for their sacking given Mr. President’s public approach to fighting corruption by “easing out” the culprits,” the party said in a statement released Wednesday by its spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan.

“The Buhari administration’s manifest inefficiency is a product of President Buhari’s myopic and divisive approach to governance, as well as the impunity and corruption deeply embedded in his administration and party, the All Progressives Congress (APC),” the report said.

“The PDP believes that even if the best people are hired, they will be tainted by the APC’s and its administration’s incompetence, impunity, disregard for rules, divisiveness, and corruption.

“The party urges President Buhari and the APC to remember that Nigerians are not swayed by the sacking of ministers, and that they are eagerly awaiting the exit of the Buhari Presidency and the APC on May 29, 2023, as there is no hope in sight under their watch,” Ologbondiyan said.

A gang of rampaging gunmen is believed to have killed at least eight people in Bagana district of Omala Local Government Area of Kogi State from Tuesday night to early Wednesday morning.

The gunmen are said to have started the attack in a supermarket in the community’s central area. They assassinated the salesperson and three other people in the store.

Fearful residents reportedly began running helter-skelter to avoid being hit by the sporadic gunshots that rang out throughout the night. Several other victims were said to have died as a result of stray bullets, while many others were injured.

The gunmen vanished without a trace, leaving the residents fearful of future attacks.

According to one source, the invasion is linked to a nearly ten-year conflict between three dominant groups in the area. In 2014, the conflict resulted in communal clashes that claimed dozens of lives and property.

According to him, the same shop, which belonged to Musa Salifu, one of the sons of an embattled Onu Otutubatu Alhaji Salifu Anyebe, was attacked about five months ago, and he was wounded by gunshots.

William Aya, a spokesman for the Kogi State Police Command, confirmed the breach of peace, but claimed that normalcy had been restored in the area. Police have launched a manhunt for the perpetrators of the violence, he added.

The governor is from Maradun, the local government area’s headquarters.

SP Muhammad Shehu, the command’s public relations officer, confirmed the development in a statement, saying the abduction occurred after a large number of armed bandits invaded the school at exactly 1122 hours.

Shehu stated, “The Command, led by CP Ayuba N Elkanah psc+, has deployed a search and rescue team that was mandated to work in tandem with the military to ensure the safe rescue of the abducted students.”

Elkanah also urged the general public, particularly parents and relatives of the abducted students, to remain patient and pray for the ongoing rescue operation’s success.

“Security has also been beefed up at Kaya Village and environs to forestall further attack on the communities,” the statement continued, emphasizing that more information would be made available to the public.

The governor encourages people to help themselves.

Meanwhile, the state’s governor, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, has urged residents to defend themselves from bandit attacks.

Matawalle made the remarks during a special prayer session organized by his administration on Wednesday to seek God’s intervention in the state’s current insecurity challenges.

Among those present were prominent Islamic scholars from the state as well as top government officials.

“I am calling on the people of the state, particularly rural communities, to use all available weapons at their disposal and protect themselves whenever they are attacked by bandits within their respective domains,” the governor said at the event.

“From now on, whenever these bandits storm your villages, I am directing our law abiding citizens, particularly those at the grassroots, to come out en masse and confront them with every available weapon you have at your disposal,” the governor said.

“I am confident that if this measure is implemented, the issue of banditry will be resolved quickly,” Mutawalle added.

Bandits are hit by a NAF jet.

In a separate incident, armed bandits were killed by a fighter jet from the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) at a school building in the state’s Shinkafi local government area on Sunday.

The jet also carried out air offensives in the areas of Zangon Dammaka and Jajaye, where Kachalla Haru and his loyalists had taken refuge.

All of the operations over the weekend, according to an intelligence operative involved in the joint military operation in Zamfara State, were successful, according to PRNigeria.

“On August 29, 2921, at approximately 2 p.m., credible intelligence was received that over 100 armed bandits had surrounded a school building in Galadi’s Gidan Rijiya village, Shinkafi LGA, Zamfara State.

“A NAF Alpha Jet was then dispatched to conduct an assault on the location as part of Operation Hadarin Daji. Countless bandits were killed and their weapons were destroyed as a result of the assault strike.

“Aerial strikes were also carried out on Halilu Tubali’s enclave in Sububu forest. Except for one building, all of the operations were successful with no collateral damage.”

4 Banks Owe FG N10.6bn in Customs Duty — Reps

0

The House of Representatives has threatened to stop banks from remitting billions of naira collected as customs duty to the federal government, claiming that four out of 18 banks failed to do so.

When the banks appeared before the House Committee on Customs on Wednesday, this was their position. Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), Standard Chartered Bank, Ecobank, and Providus Bank were the banks involved.

Most banks have been found culpable of not disclosing the exact amount they owed as outstanding remittances of Customs Duty collections running into billions of naira, according to Chairman of the Committee, Leke Abejide (APC, Kogi).

According to him, four of the 18 banks under investigation are allegedly owed the federal government N10.6 billion in unpaid Customs duty collections.

ECO Bank was also chastised by the committee for claiming N450 million in unremitted funds in documents submitted to the committee earlier.

According to Abejide, the committee discovered that the figure is N3.9 billion after conducting an independent investigation, collecting data, and analyzing the bank’s customs collection transactions.

Haruna Musa, the GTB’s Executive Director, said that some of the figures from the N103 million liability that had been tagged as unremitted had actually been remitted by the bank.

Ecobank Executive Director, Corporate Banking, Adekola Adeleke, however, stated that the bank owes no other funds.

Providus Bank was praised by the committee for being more honest in their disclosure than the other banks.

Nasir Muhammed, the bank’s Group Head, Public Sector, said that of the N213 million collected, N129 million was submitted late, and the remaining balance will be paid promptly.

“I’m using this medium to issue a warning to them. We were able to recover N10.6 billion from 18 banks, or 5 out of 18 banks, which are owed to the government,” Abejide said.

The chairman of the committee warned that any bank found wanting or holding on to funds collected on behalf of the Nigeria Customs Service would be sanctioned by the Central Bank of Nigeria, with the outstanding amount deducted from their accounts (CBN).

“Well, we’ve given them two weeks to go and come back,” says the narrator. We will have no choice but to write the CBN to deduct the money from source after these two weeks,” Abejide warned.

Bandits attack Niger’s community, rob shops

On Wednesday, bandits attacked the Bassa community in Niger’s Shiroro local government area.

On Wednesday, Mohammed Abdullahi, a traditional title holder in Erena town (Gunduma), confirmed the attack by phone.

According to Abdullahi, the bandits, who are believed to be members of Boko Haram, attacked Bassa town in the early hours of Wednesday.

“I’m not sure when they attacked, but we heard about it this morning when we woke up. We heard the assailants fled Zamfara and took refuge in Shiroro forest after being shot down by Nigerian Army fighter jets a few months ago,” he said.

“The bandits have been ravaging the town since the morning, destroying shops and other valuable properties while stealing all food and money. We’ve already notified the special vigilante groups stationed at Galkogo (a village near Bassa) and they’re en route to the town.

“As I speak with you, many residents have fled to Erena, while others have taken refuge in the bush. They arrived on motorcycles in droves. Because these attackers operate differently than the bandits who typically attack villages, people are claiming they are members of Boko Haram.

The attackers had only come to steal, according to Abdullahi, who added that no one had died.
According to Shehu Nagarta, a former resident of Bassa, the bandits remained in Bassa until 6 p.m. before departing for Magami, another Shiroro LGA village.

The vigilantes and other security operatives who left to rescue the residents, according to Nagarta, have yet to return.

Attempts to contact police and government officials were unsuccessful, as calls and messages went unanswered.

Police apprehend the kidnapper of Afaka students

After 55 days in captivity, the students were released after a ransom of N15 million was paid.

Security agents, however, stormed the Askolaye community in Kaduna South Local Government Area on Sunday after tracking the suspect for weeks, according to sources.

The suspect arrived in the community almost two months ago and rented a house with the intention of enrolling his two stepchildren in an Islamic school, according to a resident familiar with the situation. Security agents detained the suspect and his wife, he said, while community leaders and neighbors who had been summoned for questioning had been released.

Another resident told our correspondent that the suspect’s wife, whose father and husband were murdered by bandits, had no idea her current husband was a criminal who had orchestrated the murders of her late father and husband.

“After murdering her husband, he returned and married her, then adopted her two children, both under the age of seven. All of this was unknown to her until he was apprehended and confessed in front of her during interrogation. He also admitted to being a part of the group that carried out several school kidnappings, including those of Afaka students,” he said.

When officers arrived in the community, they discovered that the suspect’s three-bedroom house on the ring road in Layin Dahiru Bauchi was locked.

Another local told our correspondent that the suspect claimed to be from Ilorin, Kwara State, and that he had relocated his family to enroll them in school.

“He told us his name is Abubakar; we don’t know if that is his real name, but he was introduced to us by a tailor friend in Badarawa,” he explained. However, the suspect’s tailor friend has now told security agents that their relationship is based on the fabrics he brings to him to sew, as he had no idea the suspect was a bandit.

The Kaduna State Police Command, through its Public Relations Officer, ASP Mohammed Jalige, declined to comment on the arrest when contacted, but said the matter was being investigated.
