Buhari has urged insurance companies in Nigeria to expand their operations

0

President Muhammadu Buhari has urged insurance companies in Nigeria to take advantage of the government’s ongoing efforts to grow the economy’s non-oil sector through innovation.

The president praised their role in encouraging medical practitioners to combat the spread of COVID-19 during the virtual opening ceremony of the 47th African Insurance Organization, AIO, Conference and Annual General Assembly.

According to him, the insurance sector will be critical to the economy’s diversification by providing needed stability, economic sustainability, revenue generation, job creation, and financial inclusion.

“The insurance industry in Africa has a bright future. All we need to do now is put in place the proper mechanisms for it to thrive. I can assure you that this administration has supported and will continue to support the growth of insurance in Nigeria and Africa as a whole.

“I applaud the AIO’s leadership for its foresight, perseverance, and resilience in ensuring that the African insurance market strives to meet its expectations in the global market, despite the current challenges,” he said.
Mr Buhari described the conference’s theme, “Rebuilding Africa’s Economy: An Insurance Perspective,” as “appropriate and well-thought out” in light of the current reality, in which many governments are scrambling to find innovative ways to manage their economies in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The pandemic has changed many perspectives, forcing leaders all over the world to think hard about solutions.

“I want to assure you that we in Nigeria are doing everything humanly possible to ensure a coordinated approach to the pandemic and reaching out to other African leaders on possible best options to fully revive the African economy,” he added.

The president noted that the COVID-19 pandemic posed a global challenge, resulting in country-wide lockdowns, travel restrictions, and the issuance of numerous health protocols that impacted all human, social, and economic interactions, making the conference impossible to host in 2020.

“In many countries around the world, COVID-19 remains a serious challenge. Appropriate protocols have been put in place to slow the spread of the disease, and vaccination is underway.

“As a government and a nation, we recognize the need to address some of the social, economic, and health disruptions caused by the pandemic by putting in place sufficient measures that allow the system to function.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the Nigerian insurance industry for partnering with the government in this fight by providing life insurance packages to frontline medical and paramedical personnel.

“In these trying times, your support and solidarity are greatly appreciated,” the president added.

He congratulated the organizing committee on a job well done, noting that the conference’s subtopics were both relevant and critical in aiding Nigeria’s and Africa’s recovery.

“We are aware that the AIO’s Conference and Annual General Meeting are rotated among member states to provide a forum for the exchange of information and strategies on market developments, while also promoting regional knowledge and integration.

“We were delighted to learn of the AIO Executive Committee’s decision to award Nigeria the hosting rights for the 47th edition of the AIO Conference.

“As a country, we are confident in our ability to deliver the best conference ever in 2020, before the COVID-19 pandemic breaks out,” he said.

Mrs Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed, Minister of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, said the AIO’s founders’ foresight deserved praise because it fostered the African integration agenda and how best to collectively address shortcomings.

She urged the insurance industry to design products that meet the needs of society, particularly low-income earners, noting that the only way to have a greater impact on development is to look at Africa’s uniqueness.

The conference was last held in Nigeria in 2000, according to AIO President Delphine Traore, who is also the Chief Operations Officer of Alliance Africa. She assured that innovation in the sector would help to complement government development efforts.

2023: God will give us a president like Buhari, says Ebonyi Governor

0

Dave Umahi, the governor of Ebonyi State, has expressed hope that in 2023, someone with a “good heart” like President Muhammadu Buhari will emerge as his successor.

Even so, he stated that it is too early to get involved in 2023 politics because it is a distraction for the president and state governors.

Following a visit to President Muhammadu Buhari at the presidential villa in Abuja on Monday, the governor fielded questions from reporters. He also stated that members of various political parties from the South-East are working within their parties to ensure that they concede their presidential tickets to the region.
“Well, for me, I’m very much entrenched in completing my projects,” he said when asked if South-East leaders were working to get the major political parties to zone the presidency to the region. And, when my one-year term expires on May 29, 2022, I intend to pursue politics. I believe the same is true for other governors in the South-East, and by extension, governors in the APC.

“In response to your question, my position is that our people in those political parties are working hard to sell the need for the South-East to produce the next president.

“However, I believe both the governors and Mr. President should remain focused. It should be governance after the elections are completed and won. However, in this country, as soon as the election is over, the next step is for the people to be cheated.

“Those whose job is politics and who are not in elected or appointed positions have all the time and opportunity to canvass. And I believe they are doing so, and doing it well.

“However, I continue to believe that power is in God’s hands. And, for the sake of this country, God will also provide us with the next president, who, like President Buhari, has a good heart.

“We need God’s anointing for our own anointed president, for the sake of the country’s interests and unity.”

One of the lawyers for Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, has sued the Department of State Services in the Federal High Court in Abuja for allegedly violating his fundamental human rights.

In his lawsuit, titled FHC/ABJ/CS/1018/2021, Opara is seeking N50 million in damages for the violation of his right to human dignity.

During a routine visit to his client, who was detained by the DSS, Opara claimed that the DSS interfered with his right.

As a result, he requested that the court order the DSS and its Director-General to issue a written apology and have it published in two national daily newspapers.

Opara is also seeking a permanent injunction prohibiting the DSS and its agents from interfering with his right to human dignity and freedom of movement while on a routine visit to his client.

Nigeria kills with nauseating regularity – Dele Farotimi

I suppose I could end this essay with the title. And the efficacy of communication is demonstrated by the fact that few people would demand further elucidation of me, because Nigeria kills with nauseating regularity, and our country, which could have been paradise, has been destroyed and turned into a cannibalistic environment. Nigeria has been responsible for numerous murders. Even as I type these words, I’m thinking about it.

I was at an airport outside of Nigeria when I received word of Omoyele Sowore’s brother’s brutal murder. Nigeria is a murderous country. My geographical location is significant because of the agony I was experiencing and the painful thoughts that had already entered my mind as I considered humanity with only one head and fewer resources, living far more productive lives than anyone on my continent, but especially in the country of my birth and sojourn.

‘Jide Sowore is someone I’ve never met. I had never heard of him before learning of his death. It took Yele’s heartfelt tribute to humanize him in our minds; his story is the story of the Unknown Nigerian, victims of the land’s evil rulers who feed on its people. Nigeria feeds on its children’s dreams and aspirations; it is a cannibalistic sow that feeds on its people.

Nigeria is a murderous country. It kills the dreams, then the body, and it does so so frequently that it is no longer news; we have become accustomed to death. Buhari and our rulers, on the other hand, would have us believe that these deliberate evils are normal, and that we should ignore the fact that these are the natural consequences of their deliberate actions and inactions. Bandits have taken over Zamfara State, and I doubt that the victims will ask for the tribal identities of their tormentors, nor will they ask for the ethnoreligious identities of anyone sent to free them. Only the evil empire’s Gumis would be concerned.

Yele’s parents must have accepted Yele’s loss to Nigeria, because Yele is the warrior who goes to war embalming himself; Yele died decades ago, and I guarantee that his parents had accepted fate. But I doubt they ever expected Nigeria to abduct Jide in the manner that it has. I can only pray for Yele and her family to be comforted by God’s mercies and grace. Amen. Nigeria has done it again.

Expect a lot of yelling and excuses for the government’s obvious failures. Fulani herders would be blamed once more. The popular catchphrase for the Nigerian government’s failure to fulfill the most basic function of any functioning state: the protection of the lives and property of those who live within its borders. Why should the ethnicity of criminals be a consideration in public safety? But it doesn’t matter; there’s always something else to blame, someone else to blame, for the Nigerian state’s obvious failures.

Jide Sowore, good night. It’s a pity that I’ve been introduced to you through your death. Yele wrote about a man approaching 50 who was determined to return to university to further his education. Not the usual pursuit of a law degree, or the allure of being a lawyer in a lawless country; your pursuit couldn’t have been influenced by money; you were already too old for that to be the reason you returned to school; and I’m sure there are important lessons for the wise in your life. If Nigeria hadn’t happened to you, you would have told your story, and I urge those who knew you to consider it a duty to tell the world about you.

The Nigerian government murders. Always, always, always, always, always, always, always, always, always, always Ad naseum, ad naseum, ad n Buhari should be ashamed of himself! Shame on all Nigerians who are ruining crass! Nigeria has done it again. Please don’t let Nigeria happen to me or you. Amen.

Buhari has ordered the establishment of farm estates in all of Nigeria’s senatorial districts

0

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALD) to establish integrated farm estates in each of the country’s 109 senatorial districts.

After meeting with Buhari at the State House in Abuja over the weekend, NALD Executive Secretary Paul Ikonne told reporters about it.
He urged state governors to take advantage of Buhari’s desire to make land available for the establishment of farm estates, which, he claims, will help to combat youth unemployment and achieve food security.

The commissioning of the Daura Integrated Farm Estate in Katsina State, he said, was a wake-up call to Nigerians about Buhari’s commitment to food security.

He claimed that the Integrated Farm Estate in Borno was 75 percent complete, and that fish villages were being built in 40 locations to engage women.

The Kogi State Government had donated 700 hectares of land to NALDA for the integrated land estate, while the Ogun State Government had donated 100 hectares, according to Ikonne.

He stated that the NALDA was establishing a fish village in Abia State to engage women in fish production and packaging.

INEC has decentralized voter registration, in Anambra

0

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced yesterday that Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) will now be conducted in Anambra State’s wards.

The Commission stated that it is working in tandem with the governorship election on November 6th.

Festus Okoye, INEC’s Commissioner for Information and Voter Education, said that preparations are proceeding according to the election’s detailed Timetable and Schedule of Activities.

He claimed that eight of the 14 activities had already been completed successfully, including party primaries, candidate nominations, and the start of political party campaigns.

The Commission has approved the devolution of the CVR to the state’s 326 Wards to ensure that new voters and those who wish to transfer their registration to Anambra State or from one part of the state to another have the opportunity to do so and complete the process before the election.

“The exercise will begin on Monday, August 30th, 2021, and end on Sunday, September 5th, 2021,” Okoye said. This is in addition to the 21 existing Local Government Area offices and the State Head Office, where physical registration is currently occurring. The total number of registration centers in the state now stands at 348.”

“Voter registration shall cease not later than 60 days before an election, in accordance with Section 9(5) of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended),” he added. This means that by September 6, 2021, the exercise in Anambra State will be over. This will allow the Commission to clean up the data, compile the register, distribute copies to political parties, print the Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) for registered voters to collect, and prepare two copies of the register for each of the 5,720 polling units ahead of the election.”

As a result, in addition to our Local Government and State offices, those who wish to register in person or physically can now do so from August 30 to September 5, 2021, at the Registration Area (Ward) level throughout the State. If they want to vote in the upcoming Governorship election, those who completed the online pre-registration must also complete the physical registration within those dates. From September 6, 2021, until after the governorship election, the Commission will suspend physical voter registration in Anambra State.

The Commission has identified 580 pre-registrants from online voter registration who have scheduled appointments to complete their registration after September 5, 2021. We’ve emailed each of them and rescheduled their appointments within the devolved exercise’s timeframe. If the date we proposed is not convenient for them, we have also given them the option of choosing another date within that time frame. They may, however, reschedule for a later date if they do not wish to vote in the Governorship election on November 6th.

We are deploying 652 trained staff, two for each of the 326 wards, as part of the Commission’s commitment to continue to provide a pleasant experience for Nigerians during the CVR exercise. Furthermore, sufficient voter registration machines and technical support will be available for the duration of the exercise, which will take place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily, including weekends. Our Anambra State office has begun stakeholder engagements and extensive publicity for the exercise.

N/ Delta Leaders Criticize Ijaw Youth’s Attack On Akpabio in NDDC Audit

Leaders of the Niger Delta Movement for Development (NDMD) have slammed the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) Worldwide for what they described as unwarranted and irresponsible attacks on Senator Godswill Akpabio, Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, over the Niger Delta Development Commission’s forensic audit report (NDDC).

In a statement released on Sunday, NDMD Convener Victor Mathew praised President Muhammadu Buhari and Akpabio for concluding the forensic audit of the NDDC.

Mathew described Akpabio’s audit report to President Buhari as thorough and far-reaching, saying that implementing the recommendations would reposition the commission to fulfill its mandate.

SAN seeks for a debt collection policy for AMCON and others.

0

The Federal Government should expand the powers of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria in its debt recovery process, according to a senior Nigerian lawyer.

Mr Oluwakemi Balogun of Oluwakemi LP, speaking at a training for solicitors, receivers, and receiver/managers in Lagos, said debt recovery in Nigeria would continue to be a burden on AMCON and the financial sector as long as the system allowed some “brazenly walk into banks to borrow money with no intention of repaying the loan obligation.”

According to a statement released by AMCON on Sunday, the lawyer said the government must take drastic measures to save the country from debtors who, according to him, have perfected the art of borrowing money from various banks and serially defaulting on repayment agreements because the country had no policy to protect them.

“We need a national law that will assist lenders,” Balogun said. A national debt collection law is required. This law should not only apply to AMCON as a government agency, but to the entire country.

“This is one of the methods we can use to reduce bad behavior. You can’t borrow money and then refuse to pay it back in some other economies and get away with it. As a result, Nigeria should not let recalcitrant debtors off the hook.”
Mr. Benedict Daminabo, group head, asset management, represented AMCON Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Ahmed Kuru, who stated that the agency would continue to emphasize the dangers of not recovering the debt due to its grave implications.

“We have repeatedly made the point at every opportunity that the AMCON mandate must be viewed as one of serious national importance by all stakeholders,” he said.

“If AMCON is unable to recover the massive debt of over N5 trillion by sunset, it becomes the debt of the Federal Government of Nigeria, which will be paid with taxpayers’ money.

“The implication is that the public will be made to pay for the irresponsibility of a small number of people who continue to exploit loopholes in our laws to avoid their moral and legal obligations to repay their debts.”

He went on to say that AMCON had reached a point where all stakeholders needed to band together to combat the common enemy of massive debt.

The NEDC and its exemplary bazar in housing

0

By Collins Olatunji

How far can we go to get a rare breed with honesty, transparency and uprightness?
Does Mr Integrity still exist in Nigeria?

The Managing Director (MD) of the North East Development Commission (NEDC) Alhaji Mohammed Goni Alkali has proven to solve the above riddle by coordinating, harmonizing, and overseeing the success of many intervention and initiative programmes for the Northeastern States through his effective, top, and outstanding managerial skills.

Looking back at the many achievements by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration, Nigerians are proud that they made the right choice back in 2015 and also in 2020. The institution of the NEDC is a proof that our country is being led in the right direction. The provision of 1000 housing units, several burn centres and food to the people of Borno State is highly commendable. The NEDC under the leadership of its chairman, DR Mohammed Alkali continues to carry on its mandate assigned to it by the Nigerian government. For such a young agency of the Nigerian government to have achieved all its recent successes in such a short period of time is incredibly stupendous.

The people of North-East Nigeria have suffered a lot from various boxes rocking the country, this include terrorism, banditry and kidnappings. These vices have caused so many ripple effects, and it would take the best of governments several years to correct. It is therefore laudable that the current administration has managed to make a lot of progress in bringing relief and peace to the region. Several officers appointed by the PMB administration have given their all in the fulfillment of this goal and the leadership of the NEDC is a leading horse in this mission.

Let us recall that sometime in 2019, the president in all his wisdom declared a 10,000 housing programme in order to resettle families who have been displaced due to terrorism. The provision of the 1000 housing units by the NEDC is thus in line with this declaration made by the president. The housing units according to Dr Mohammed Alkali, consists of four blocks of well-furnished 2-bedroom detachable flats with verandas and a courtyard in a cluster arrangement.

In addition to the housing units, other essential amentities such as solar-powered street lights and boreholes, a police-station and a motor-park were provided in the area. Provisions for schooling were also made available. That wasn’t all. The chairman of the NEDC also announced that many beneficiaries would receive food and other relief items.

The commission also empowered many farmers by providing them with agricultural machinery and equipments, seeds, fertilizers, agrochemicals and extension services logistics’ vehicles annually under a programme tagged; “Integrated Agriculture
Programme” (IAP). It covers the whole 112 LGAs in the Northeast. The NEDC is also into skills acquisition, training and provision of starter packs to Information Communication Technology (ICT), trainees. Alkali devoted part of his time in giving entrepreneurship, and vocational skills a boost. Each of the 1,028 wards of the Northeast region, The NEDC has empowered women and youths in order to divert attention from the attractions of conscription into Boko Haram.

I must commend the great insight employed by the Chairman of the NEDC in the provision of the housing units. He is largely responsible for the immense success of the NEDC since its establishment. His sagacious decision making and foresight has so far seen the North-East heal quickly from its wounds. Joy and laughter are gradually returning to the hearts of the people of the N-E. The mandate handed to the NEDC by the Nigerian government might seem like an easy one superficially, but in reality, it is far from that. Bringing relief to a region corroded by terrorism is a herculean task. As sophisticated as the UN is, it still faces many challenges when it comes to providing relief and humanitarian aid to war-torn areas or areas plagued by terrorism. The NEDC has so far managed to surmount the many challenges it has been faced with by the enactment of effective rehabilitation and resettlement programmes as well as the construction and development of social and physical infrastructure.

Other initiatives were instituted in the past to restore development ot the N_E in the past. These include: the Presidential Initiative on the North East (PINE), Presidential Committee on the NorthEast Initiative (PCNI) and the Victims Support Fund (VSF). These initiatives attained a level of success, but I can boldly say that the NEDC has attained much more. The NEDC was designed to consolidate or replace former initiatives concerned with the restoration of the N-E, and thus this was an immense responsibility on the shoulders on whoever would shepherd he organization. Those shoulders ended up being those of Dr Mohammed Alkali and I must admit that they were the right shoulders.

Dr Mohammed Alkali has been known widely as a great achiever. Alkali has over the years acquired a sea of knowledge and experience from not just within the shores of Nigeria but also overseas. The former executive director, operations of the Bank of Industry (BOI) is an alumnus of several prestigious university including Bayero University, University of London, Havard Business school and the Columbia University. It goes without saying that he has been thoroughly equipped with knowledge and experience needed to excel in every position he is placed in. He is known by those close to him as an assiduous and perfect gentleman. One other good character of his that makes him stand out is his complete transparency.

It is understandable that huge amount of funds pass through the NEDC, and it is tempting for the leadership to siphon some of those funds. But that isn’t the case of the current leadership of the NEDC. Their boss has ensured that the books are kept complete and transparency and fair play remained topmost priority in the agency. He ensured that all the funds received are put into good use unlike the times when agencies similar to the NEDC failed to achieve their mandates due to flagrant corruption.

This is an uncommon applaud of a public servant in Nigeria who came under the investigative searchlight of different media and national parliamentarians. Most Nigerians who find themselves in such probes hardly escape without a scratch, like in the case of Alkali. They are found complicit in many ways and handed over to anti-graft agencies for prosecution. Many have stood trial for alleged money laundering, and have fallen. But the NEDC leadership have stood strong and victorious in every trial and accusations.

Mohammed Akali is a man of integrity and good standing. I personally love his exceptional leadership style, which I believe is worthy of emulation by any visionary leader.

The provision of the housing units and other amenities is just a foretaste of the many achievements to be made by the NEDC. I believe that soon, the North-East will be completely restored to not just its former glory, but better than it once was.

I admonish us a patriotic citizens, to continue to provide our support to the NEDC and the current administration in general. Let’s ensure that our dear country comes out of the many quagmires it finds itself in, and once again prove to the world that we are truly the giants of Africa.
