Oluyin, the Ekiti monarch, celebrates his first coronation anniversary

0

The Oluyin of Iyin Ekiti, Irepodun/Ifelodun Council area of Ekiti State, Oba Adeniyi Ajakaiye, has stated that the essence of his coronation anniversary celebration was peace, security, and the growth witnessed in the community in the previous year.

Nothing like killings, abductions, or life-threatening heinous crimes have been reported in the community since Oba Ajakaiye’s ascension to the throne, according to Oba Ajakaiye, who attributed this to the water-tight security arrangement in place.

“Apart from the uplift which the palace has witnessed in the last one year, we have been networking with our sons and daughters at home and in the Diasporas, and the result is all over the place in the town,” the traditional ruler said at a press briefing heralding activities for his weeklong one year coronation celebrations, which will begin on Monday.

“Thanks to our sons and daughters, we’ve lit up the town’s heart with solar-powered street lights. This has made the town appealing at night and served as a deterrent to criminals who might otherwise hide in the dark to carry out their nefarious activities,” Oba Ajakaiye said.

“We are witnessing a new dimension to obaship in our town,” Arije said. In addition to the palace’s facelift, Kabiyesi has facilitated infrastructure, including the donation of five motorized bore holes by locals, support for the establishment of LCDA and the equipping of its Secretariat, and ensuring that the town’s only bank was reopened six months after it was attacked by armed robbers.”

Free medical and surgical missions, traditional displays, the launch of the N500 million Palace Development Fund, and the conferral of chieftaincy titles on some eminent personalities, including indigenes, are among the activities planned for the coronation anniversary, according to Arije.

The Oluyin-in-Council scribe urged the town’s sons and daughters to always contribute their quotas to the development of Iyin Ekiti, both at home and abroad.

Religious Leaders are being tasked by Osinbajo to lead people to truth and justice

0

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has charged the country’s churches and religious leaders with leading people in the search of truth and justice.

Osinbajo gave a speech at the All Saints Anglican Church in Wuse Zone 5 in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, on Sunday (FCT).

“The church is a place where people can be delivered from terror, oppression, and everlasting damnation, a source of succour, joy, and encouragement,” Osinbajo remarked. We must continue to build churches and houses of worship, knowing that everywhere a church is planted, the light and power of the gospel of Jesus Christ’s love is established as the answer to the world’s darkness, suffering, and misery.

“Evil and hatred are more powerful than ever, and the war between light and darkness is more intense than ever, but the church will triumph.”

The church edifice, according to the vice-president, is a spectacular architectural feat with gorgeous finishes and cutting-edge design.

The most powerful weapon mankind has against anarchy and the work of darkness, according to the Primate of the Anglican Church in Nigeria, Most Rev. Henry Ndukauba, who spoke to journalists shortly after the commissioning of the church edifice, is the power of God and the word of God.

He asked Nigerians and the political class to band together and always do the right thing.

“We must band together. We call on politicians, religious and traditional leaders, and all those in positions of power to act responsibly. Only by working together will we be able to triumph. It is unacceptable to see breaches in our security, compromise, and treachery within our system. We demand that the military and politics be honest.

“Nothing drives a nation down faster than deception. Leadership deception can jeopardize a country’s security and integrity. If we love Nigeria, we must quit compromising and live as nationalists. “One day, God will arise for this nation,” he said.

The Anglican Church is dedicating a new church building and honoring God’s faithfulness at a difficult moment in the country’s history, according to Ndukauba, who added that the country may still reach great milestones with persistence.

“We need to encourage people not to give up; we face security, economic, and other challenges, but we want to encourage everyone because the church is also a part of society; we are not immune to what is going on around us; in fact, we are suffering from it. But we want to encourage everyone not to give up because God has not given up on us; we are trusting God that Nigeri will be restored.

“The church’s responsibility should be to pray and preach God’s word. The power of God and the word of God are the most powerful weapons we have against anarchy and the activities of the devil. He has never let us down, so let us persevere in our trust. Let us put our faith in God and work together, wherever possible, to help those around us,” he urged.

Nnamdi Kanu’s and IPOB’s actions have harmed Igbos’ chances of producing Nigeria’s president in 2023 – Ohanaeze

0

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, an Igbo socio-political organization, has admitted that Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOBagitations ,’s will have an impact on the Southeast’s chances of producing a Nigerian president in 2023.

Kanu’s directive that his followers not participate in voter registration and destroy their Personal Voters Cards, or PVCs, would jeopardize the Igbo’s chances of producing a Nigerian president, according to Dimm Uche Okwukwu, Deputy President-General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

In an exclusive interview with Okwukwu, he urged Nigerians not to see Igbos through the lens of Kanu and IPOB.

Igbos, according to Okwukwu, are peace-loving people who are always willing to coexist with other Nigerians.

Kanu, he said, should be ignored because he criticizes Igbo and non-Igbo leaders.

“Marginalization has a way of producing results,” Okwukwu says, “and you will agree with me that the majority of people are poor and marginalized.”

“These poor marginalized people will follow you if you tell them what they want to hear; however, Nnamdi Kanu is not getting it right because he has subscribed to violence as a way of life and has not limited it to Igbo leaders.

“He has attacked Asiwaju, Ekweremadu, and Rotimi Amaechi in Lagos; he has threatened to kill Igbo leaders and governors, so he is not only attacking outsiders; he is also attacking his Igbo brothers and sisters.

“The point I’m trying to make is that we need to take Nnamdi Kanu and put him back where he belongs. He is not an Igbo leader and does not speak on behalf of the Ndigbo people.

“This is my argument: Igbos do not believe in violence, anarchy, or the destruction of lives and property. Igbos in Nigeria are willing to live in peace with other tribes.

“Igbos are demanding that the Presidency be given to an Igbo man 50 years after the war. Jonathan ruled for six years and Nigeria did not vanish; Yorubas were in power, the North ruled, and now the Igbo can rule. Will they have any other arguments tomorrow if you give them the presidency? Will they claim that Nigeria is pushing them out? The answer is no, because people will wonder what they did with the presidency after they had it for eight years.

“Kanu’s agitation will undoubtedly have a significant impact on our chances. Nnamdi Kanu’s agitations, statements, actions, omissions, and commissions have an impact on us in some way.

“He is preventing Igbo voters from registering to vote, and he is urging supporters to destroy their PVC cards. Apart from the fact that Nigeria requires our assistance to some extent, Nnamdi Kanu’s actions reflect our own.

“The result of his action jeopardizes our desire because when you say people should destroy their PVCs and not participate in voter registration, it affects us in some way, and I won’t deny that in any way.

“However, I appeal to everyone not to mirror the Igbos through IPOB’s actions.”

Amusan ecstatic after winning the Diamond League and setting an African record

TOBI Amusan is ecstatic to have become the first Nigerian to win a Diamond League championship.

The 24-year-old, who missed out on a medal in the 100m hurdles at the Tokyo Olympics, ran the fastest race of her life to win her event, clocking 12.42 seconds to break Glory Alozie’s 23-year-old African record.

Visser Nadine of the Netherlands came in second with a national record and personal best time of 12.51 seconds, while Jamaica’s Tapper Megan came in third with a time of 12.55 seconds.

The 2018 Commonwealth Games gold medalist said, “It’s great, it’s a great feeling.”

“In retrospect, I don’t think I won a medal at the Olympics. After that, it was a difficult time for me, but I never gave up, and I came out here thinking that if I didn’t win a medal in Tokyo, the least I could do was win a Diamond League Trophy, which I just did!

“The hurdles is a very mental event, and my coach always tells me to focus on myself and execute,” says the athlete.

“Once you get the hang of it, you won’t have any trouble getting over the stumbling blocks. I’m glad I came out on top. I have one more meeting in Zagreb before I can take a break from the season. It’s something I’m really looking forward to.”

South-South cooperation is more important than ever – UN chief

0

On Friday, the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation hosted a high-level virtual panel discussion on boosting solidarity “in support of a more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable future.”

“As the world seeks to ramp up COVID-19 response and recovery and tackle the existential threat of climate change, South-South and triangular cooperation is more important than ever,” UN Secretary-General António Guterres said at the event.

The announcement comes just two days before the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation, which is celebrated on September 12th.

The COVID-19 pandemic, according to Guterres, is “the most complex immediate challenge facing our world, undermining hard-won social, economic, and environmental gains.”

In such trying times, he said, the solidarity that underpins South-South cooperation had proven vital for developing countries once again.

“Global South countries have shared their knowledge and resources to aid response and recovery efforts throughout the pandemic. But we must do much more together,” the UN chief said.

To address the global health crisis, reduce poverty and inequality, achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, and avoid climate catastrophe, Guterres believes that greater international cooperation is required.

“Building inclusive and resilient societies, empowering women and youth, leveraging digital, greener and bluer initiatives, and expanding sustainable financing,” the UN Secretary-General explained.
In recent years, the countries of the South have contributed to more than half of global growth. Intra-South trade is at an all-time high, accounting for nearly a quarter of all global trade.

“South-South and triangular cooperation provide concrete solutions to these common challenges,” Guterres continued.

At the same event, General Assembly President Volkan Bozkir stated that the world must do more to assist these developing countries in recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, and that South-South cooperation is critical in this regard.

“I have a long list of facts and figures about the impact on developing countries, including everything from income to inequality, gender empowerment to social service access.

“Suffice it to say, these numbers are not encouraging. Years of progress have been wiped out or are in jeopardy,” he explained.

He said that during his travels, particularly in Central Asia and the Caribbean, he saw how important South-South and triangular cooperation were in addressing challenges, especially those that cut across borders and regions.

30-year-old Ekiti man has been remanded for allegedly inserting iron into a lady’s private parts

0

On Friday, an Ado Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s Court ordered the remand of Gboyega Ogunlola, 30, in a detention center for allegedly raping a 27-year-old woman and inserting an iron rod into her private parts.

Ogunlola was charged with attempted murder and rape.

In her statement to the police, the victim claimed that the defendant drove her to Anambra State to check on her children, and that she slept off the ride.

She claims she later ended up in Ogunlola’s room, where he allegedly raped her and inserted an iron rod into her private parts, resulting in her hospitalization.

The defendant also allegedly stole the victim’s phone and N260,000 meant for her children’s school fees, according to the victim.

“The defendant was reasonably suspected of committing the offences of rape, attempted murder, and stealing from a 27-year-old woman in Iworoko Ekiti on September 5, 2021,” police prosecutor Inspector Olubu Apata said.

“The offenses are punishable under sections 358, 320, and 390 of the Criminal Code, Cap C16 Laws of Ekiti State, 2012,” according to the statement.

The defendant was remanded in a correctional center in Ado Ekiti, pending legal advice, by the presiding Chief Magistrate, Saka Afunso, who granted the prosecutor’s request.

The case has been postponed until October 5, 2021.

EFCC Chairman: Terrorism war, tax evasion claim N11.4 trillion

0

Since 2008, the Federal Government is said to have spent N6 trillion on the fight against terrorism, while multi-national corporations operating in the country are said to have lost N5.4 trillion in tax evasion between 2011 and 2021.

This is in addition to resource theft in the country’s oil and gas sector.

Abdulrasheed Bawa, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, revealed this on Friday while speaking at the 38th Cambridge International Symposium on Economic Crime, organized by the Centre for International Documentation on Organised and Economic Crime, Jesus College, University of Cambridge, on the topic of ‘Combating Crime, Corruption and Implications for Development and Security.’

According to the EFCC boss, who is represented by his Deputy Chief of Staff, Sambo Mayana, the anti-graft agency has recovered over N6 billion from financial and economic saboteurs since March when he took office.

The EFCC’s spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, said this in a statement titled, “In UK, Bawa calls on world leaders to rise to the challenge of fighting corruption.”

According to a report by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, resources that could help a country develop are lost due to criminal acts like corruption, tax evasion, money laundering, and others.

“The spoiler effects on countries’ development processes are diverse, and particularly severe for fragile states: economic crime, including illicit financial flows, diverts much-needed resources from security and justice to basic social services like health and education,” according to Bawa.

According to him, the EFCC had over 3,408 convictions as of August 2021, according to records.

“Since I became Executive Chairman on March 5, 2021, we have recovered over N6 billion, $161 million, £13,000, €1,730, 200 Canadian dollars, CFA 373,000, 8,430, and 30 real estates.

He went on to say, “We have arrested over 1,500 Internet fraudsters, many of whom are being prosecuted.”

The absence of significant improvement in the living conditions of people in Africa and other developing countries, despite their natural resource endowment, according to the EFCC chair, is due to widespread economic crime in those countries.

“The prevalence of illegal mining, smuggling of goods, tax evasion, illegal oil bunkering, and illegal arms deals, to name a few,” he argued, “does not allow the government to receive the full accruals from the continent’s vast resources needed for development.”

“Government officials and their private-sector collaborators embezzle the revenue generated. This does not allow for economic growth and, as a result, is an impediment to development.”

Bandits plotting attacks in Southwest -Gani Adams

The South-West Security Stakeholders Group (SSSG) has issued a warning to bandits and other “bad elements” to stay away from the region or face the group’s wrath.

They made the announcement soon after an emergency meeting in Lagos.

The group said there were feelings that bandits had perfected plans to strike in the South-West in a statement signed by the convener and the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, and the secretary, Alhaji Owolabi Amusat.

“On this note, the SSSG has determined that bolstering security operations in our region is necessary. We also charge the police and other security agencies in the region to maintain vigilance in ensuring the region’s security. Any attempt to invade the South West will result in both economic and political disaster, according to the statement.

Shehu Gumi’s visit to Igboho town was also dismissed by the group, who claimed it was an attempt to mock and undermine Yoruba activists and freedom fighters.
