Gunmen Open Fire at Anambra Meeting, 19 Feared Dead

0

When gunmen entered a meeting location in Ogboji, Orumba South Local Government Area, Anambra State, on Monday, and began shooting at attendees, killing at least 19, panic swept across the community.
Eyewitnesses told Vanguard that the attackers, who arrived with two Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs), targeted a group of people thought to be Ebonyi State natives.
It’s still unknown why the horrific incident occurred.

Nonetheless, sources indicate that the attack might be related to heightened enforcement of the region’s outlawed sit-at-home edict.

Others assert that the massacre might have been caused by internal conflicts, pointing out that the attackers allegedly demanded to view the meeting minutes before opening fire.

“They arrived unexpectedly and demanded the meeting minutes. Shooting began before anyone could react. A victim, who wished to remain anonymous for security concerns, told reporters, “It was terrifying.”

Although the Anambra State Police Command acknowledged the incident, they provided a different number of casualties.

SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer, stated in a statement issued on Tuesday that nine persons were taken to the hospital with injuries and that ten individuals were confirmed deceased.

According to Ikenga, “the armed criminals attacked a gathering, shooting intermittently, in two Sport Utility Vehicles.”

Unfortunately, 10 people were pronounced dead after the victims were taken to the hospital in a hurry. They have been placed in the mortuary.

He also said that the incident was under control by a joint team of police officers and other security personnel who had been sent to the area.

The statement said, “The command strongly condemns this act of violence and is working with relevant stakeholders to ensure those responsible don’t go to jail.”

People in Ogboji and the surrounding communities are reportedly extremely afraid of the attack, and they are urging security forces to step up patrols and rebuild trust in the region.

According to a community leader who wished to remain anonymous, “We have seen unusual people in the region before. However, there have never been mass murders of this nature. People in our community are terrified.
In light of ongoing investigations, the state administration has not yet released an official statement regarding the incident at the time this article was filed.

The recent tragedy is just one more of the many security issues that Anambra and other Southeast regions are facing.

Senate Approves Dakas’ Appointment as Law Reform Commission Chairman

The appointment of Professor Dakas C.J. Dakas as Chairman of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission and Dr. Uchenna Eugene Okolocha as Commissioner representing the South-South was confirmed by the Senate on Tuesday.
According to reports, the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters, chaired by Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire (Ondo Central), presented and adopted a report at plenary following the confirmation.
The Nigerian Law Reform Commission Act, 2022, Sections 2 (1) and (2), which give the President the authority to name a Chairman and three Commissioners, subject to Senate confirmation, was used to make the appointments.

Only Professor Dakas and Dr. Okolocha, two of the three nominees, showed up for the June 25, 2025 screening, according to the committee report.
Professor Fatima Alkali, the third nominee and a native of the Northeast, reportedly informed the Presidency of her decision to withdraw the candidacy.

“Both nominees have shown competence, fulfilled all professional and constitutional requirements, and are free of petitions or negative security reports,” the committee said.

The panel suggested that in order to preserve gender and geographical balance, a fresh nominee from the Northeast—ideally a woman—be taken into consideration.

Members of the Senate alternately praised the nominees’ qualifications, especially that of Professor Dakas, a well-known constitutional law specialist and former attorney general of Plateau State.

Lawmaker Adams Oshiomhole, who also took part in the discussion and represented Edo North, called Dakas’ legal and intellectual credentials “intimidating,” adding that “many of us in this chamber were his classmates and can attest to his brilliance and character.”

Osun Central Senator Adebiade expressed similar views, calling on the appointees to fulfill the Commission’s responsibility to promote prompt legal reforms in Nigeria.

Dr. Okolocha (South-South) was appointed Commissioner and Professor Dakas (North-Central) was appointed Chairman after the Senate overwhelmingly approved their nominations.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio expressed his gratitude to the Judiciary Committee for their hard work and to the candidates for their achievements.

“We wish Dr. Okolocha and Professor Dakas a prosperous career serving the country in good health and sound mind, and we congratulate them on their confirmation,” Akpabio said.

Additionally, he expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for what he called “considerate and merit-based nominations that reflect the administration’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s legal mechanisms.”

1,686 Confirmed Dead in Cult Clashes, Says Latest Report

According to a recent analysis by SBM Intelligence, between January 2020 and March 2025, at least 909 gang violent episodes occurred in Nigeria, killing at least 1,686 persons.
The study, which was made public on Tuesday, reportedly depicted a bleak image of gang and cult-related conflicts that were raging across many states, with the greatest number of fatalities occurring in Rivers, Lagos, and Edo.
Rivers State led the list with 215 recorded deaths, followed by Lagos with 197 and Edo with 192, according to the SBM Intelligence study. These numbers highlight the rising crime associated with cult battles in urban and semi-urban areas.

The research noted that cult groups including the Vikings, Icelanders, Eiye, Aiye, Black Axe, and Greenlanders were among the main participants in these conflicts.
“With over 750 deaths, the South-South leads in fatalities, motivated by fierce feuds between Vikings, Icelanders, and Greenlanders, especially in Rivers State,” the research said.

Southwest and South-South Worst Hits
With over 750 killings, the South-South region was followed by the Southwest with 491 deaths, particularly in Lagos and Ogun, where the Aiye and Eiye fraternities have frequently clashed.

In the Southeast, more than 215 people were killed, mostly in Anambra, where separatist-related turmoil is thought to have combined with violent cult activity.

“The Southeast is also very deadly (215+ deaths), with a lot of Viking and Aiye activity in Anambra,” the study said.

Cult-related violence claimed 204 lives in Benue State alone, with ongoing communal clashes including lesser-known organizations like Scavengers and Chain.

A horrific conflict in December 2023 in Edo, where Black Axe and Eiye cults reportedly clashed and killed over 30 people in a single week, was one of the flashpoints identified in the research.

899 deaths, or more than half of all recorded deaths, and 490 occurrences, or 54% of all cult violence in the country, occurred in Edo, Ogun, and Delta States between 2020 and the beginning of 2025.

Record Nearly Zero Cult Deaths in Borno, Zamfara, and Kebbi

The Northeast and Northwest regions combined saw fewer than 30 fatalities, according to the report, primarily as a result of armed banditry and terrorism overshadowing typical cult activities.

Because terrorist organizations dominate their security concerns, states like Borno, Kebbi, Sokoto, Yobe, and Zamfara reported zero or very few fatalities, the report noted.

Cult-related homicides also sharply increased in other states, such as Akwa Ibom (89 deaths), Bayelsa (69), Osun (55), and Kwara (58), indicating that gang networks had expanded outside their customary borders.

Year 2021: The Deadliest for Gang Violence
2021 was the bloodiest year throughout the assessment period, with 377 deaths from 173 occurrences, according to SBM’s Violence Tracker. Analysts blamed political instability and the difficulties that followed COVID-19 for the increase.

With 273 occurrences, the number of incidents peaked in 2024, however the average number of fatalities each encounter decreased.

The paper went on to say, “This surge might be attributed to the democratization of reporting through social media platforms like TikTok and 𝕏 (formerly Twitter), moving incident accounts beyond classical police releases.”

In contrast, 2022 saw a decline with 97 events and 228 deaths, most likely as a result of security crackdowns and short-term truces.

Additionally, the survey connected Nigeria’s deteriorating economy to the increase in violence, implying that more young people are turning to cult groups as a means of surviving.

“The number of incidents for the first quarter of 2025 is already on track to surpass the total for 2022,” SBM cautioned, while it also noted that the trend might be slowed by recent increased security efforts.

Even with significant annual variations, the general trend indicates ongoing instability associated with cult rivalry, financial difficulties, and lax law enforcement in urban slums.

Sani Reveals Why Northerners Are Skeptical About Peter Obi’s Single-Term Plan

Northerners would find it hard to believe Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, if he were to run for office for just one term, according to Yabagi Sani, the chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC).
During an X Space on Sunday with his supporters, Peter Obi reportedly stated that he would be willing to adhere to a four-year term if he were elected president in 2027.
In an interview on Tuesday’s episode of Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Sani asserted that none of the candidates for president in 2027—including Peter Obi—are perfect.

Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who is running for reelection to finish his eight-year term, should be succeeded by a president from the northern area, according to Sani, who cited the idea of rotation of power.
It will be hard for Northerners to believe Peter Obi, the IPAC chair said, because the balance of power shifts when politicians take office.

“Yeah, Mr. Peter Obi can agree to say, ‘I am going to do one term,’ but the northerners will tell you that if Bola Tinubu wins the (second) election after his term, it should come to the north,” he stated.

However, humans are what we are. Total authority corrupts totality. Neither is Peter Obi a saint or a person from another planet. Recurring regimes have attempted to amend the constitution to grant themselves a third term and other privileges.

It would be hard for many people to believe that Mr. Peter Obi would quit after one term because of this. Looking at the sentimental side of it, state capture, and the strength of incumbency, how would he even succeed?

Veteran Actor Oga Bello Says He Won’t Inherit Properties to His Children

Known by his stage name Oga Bello, veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker Adebayo Salami has sworn he will not leave his children any homes or properties.
In a recent interview, the actor revealed this to the Nigerian Tribune.
Bello claims that he has already left his kids the most priceless legacy possible: education.

The actor, who is proud to have 18 children and is married to two wives, stated that he made the early decision to allocate his resources to providing his kids with a good education rather than building up wealth for them.

In his own words, “I don’t want to leave my children any properties.” I simply require two homes: one in my hometown and one in Lagos. Please share any funds you find in my account. I have a strong enthusiasm for schooling.
According to the actor, who started his career in 1964 with the Young Concert Party, which was founded by the late Baba Mero, he never had the luxury of parental assistance during his own schooling, which has influenced his opinions on parenting.

Adding, “I wanted all my children to be educated, even if it’s just a first degree.”

Oga Bello continued by emphasizing that he never coerced any of his kids into performing, stating that they followed their passions and that he only encouraged them if they performed well academically.

“I didn’t force them into the industry or bring them here. I would always say no when they wanted to follow me to rehearsals, unless they were doing well in school. He said, “That made them work hard.”

Regarding the topic of retirement and aging, Oga Bello also offered insightful observations about what it’s like to be an older actor and the absence of senior readiness in society.

The hardships of old age are inevitable. Old age preparation is a personal matter. Regardless of vocation, it is not taken seriously here in Nigeria. My children were an investment. “They will take care of me when I get old,” he stated.

Fuel Subsidy Was A National Scam – Former EFCC Boss Bawa

0

AbdulRasheed Bawa, a former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, has called Nigeria’s now-defunct fuel subsidy system a national swindle that was created via institutional collusion, regulatory compromise, and ingrained corruption.
Bawa said in an interview with Arise News on Monday that influential groups, including as security services, public officials, and oil marketers, purposefully abused the long-standing subsidy program.
While talking about his latest book, “The Shadow of Loot and Losses: Uncovering Nigeria’s Fuel Subsidy Fraud,” which outlines EFCC investigations conducted between 2006 and 2011, the former anti-graft czar, who served from 2021 to 2023, made the remarks.

“Everyone, including law enforcement, was benefiting from the scale and the scam,” said Bawa. It is possible to compromise someone to the point where they will ignore it. It’s a broad issue.

He claimed that the EFCC’s examination showed how Nigeria’s subsidy payouts increased dramatically from ₦200 billion in 2006 to ₦2.1 trillion by 2011, a spike that sparked several investigations and raised concerns.

“The scope of the fraud that was discovered during my tenure at the EFCC was unprecedented,” Bawa said.

“Even at that time at the EFCC, we saw that this was something that had never happened before,” Bawa added. I made the effort to write it down.

Even while not all subsidy payments were fraudulent, he pointed out that the system had grown so weak that it allowed powerful actors to take advantage of legal gaps, with political cover protecting many of the offenders from punishment.

“With human touch, nothing is impossible, regardless of how robust a system is,” Bawa continued.

Bawa noted that the EFCC had prosecuted and convicted a number of people and businesses engaged in subsidy fraud, with some cases ending as recently as 2025.

“First, people were charged to court,” he stated. An additional set was charged. The government then realized it didn’t have to go that route. They created a window for healing.

The petroleum subsidy landscape was clearly affected by the EFCC’s intervention, according to Bawa. He disclosed that annual subsidy payments decreased from ₦2 trillion to ₦1 trillion, and the number of oil merchants fell from 118 to 49.

Bawa Discusses Tinubu’s Fuel Subsidy Elimination
In response to President Bola Tinubu’s 2023 decision to completely phase off fuel subsidies, Bawa stated that the action was long overdue and advantageous for Nigeria’s anti-corruption initiatives and financial stability.

“We’re glad we have to let it go. “At least that opportunity that the regime offered is no longer there,” he stated.

He expressed confidence that significant sums had been diverted to other areas of governance, despite the fact that he was unable to objectively confirm how the money saved from the withdrawal of subsidies was being used.

Bawa emphasized that governance is an ongoing process, but he rejected to draw parallels between his time there and the present leadership at the EFCC.

“There is always room for improvement,” he said. The nation has a very promising future. We need to be hopeful.

Regarding the trend of EFCC chairmen resigning under contentious circumstances, Bawa rejected ideas of political persecution while acknowledging the position’s perceptional difficulties.

“It’s only a stage that must pass. Humans are always talking. People will say something whether or not you’re talking the truth,” he stated.

Despite his own suspension in 2023, Bawa insisted that the work he oversaw was extensive and successful, especially when it came to combating subsidy fraud.

“There is a real impact.” “Those who were involved in the scheme were dealt a very good blow by the frauds that were discovered,” he said.

CAF WAFU B U-20: Flying Eagles of Nigeria Resume Preparations

For the CAF WAFU B U-20 Boys’ Cup, the Flying Eagles of Nigeria’s Under-20 men’s squad has returned to camping in Abuja, according to head coach Aliyu Zubairu.
Commencing on July 10 and concluding on July 23, 2025, in Accra, Ghana, the CAF WAFU B U-20 Boys’ Cup is designed to promote rising football talent throughout West Africa and encourage regional collaboration. A total of 13 nations from WAFU Zones A and B will compete.
The competition was moved from its original date earlier in the year to July. It was already in Abuja, where the Flying Eagles had begun to camp before the postponement. However, the team had to wait for the announcement of a new date, which interrupted the camping.

According to information obtained, coach Zubairu invited a number of new players in addition to the players who helped the Flying Eagles earn a spot in the 2025 U-20 World Cup in Chile.
Along with the host nation, Ghana, and the Benin Republic, the Flying Eagles will begin their WAFU B U-20 Boys’ Cup campaign in Group A. Burkina Faso, Togo, Ivory Coast, and Niger make up Group B.

The top two teams in each group will advance to the competition’s semifinals automatically.

Nigeria will play the host nation on Thursday, July 10 to begin the competition, and then they will play Benin Republic on July 13.

Coach Zubairu will be able to get the team ready for the upcoming FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile, which is set to begin on September 27 and go through October 19, 2025, by using this tournament.

Nigeria is in Group F of the international competition, which also includes Saudi Arabia, Norway, and Colombia.

Momodu to Akpabio: Ganduje’s Time Is Up, No One Is Irreplaceable in Tinubu’s Camp

0

Godswill Akpabio, the Senate President, has been cautioned by veteran journalist and PDP chieftain Dele Momodu to look out for President Bola Tinubu.
He claimed that no one is essential to Tinubu, using the circumstances surrounding former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, as an illustration.
Momodu called Ganduje a hero for resigning to take bullets for President Tinubu.

According to reports, Ganduje resigned on Friday as the National Chairman of the APC for health concerns.

His resignation, though, has been connected to political ploys to get Tinubu a second term.
On Facebook, Momodu commented on the news, writing, “I knew this day would soon come when katakata go bust for the ruling party APC… A large many of our political commentators lack knowledge of modern history.

After taking control of Lagos State for 26 years without facing any opposition, how could anyone have predicted that Tinubu’s style would ever change? Today’s fate for Vice President Shettima is not unprecedented. Several Deputy Governors in Lagos were affected.

“Governor Ambode suffered the most damage. Lately, Governor Sanwo-Olu barely managed to get away with it.

“But things we never expected will come sooner rather than later.

A sad hero, Abdullahi Ganduje took bullets for Tinubu. He is no longer useful, though, as is the case with all lackeys. Watch out, my friend Akpabio.

“No one should deceive themselves; Tinubu is the sole beneficiary of this current power. No one is essential, and everyone else can be replaced as needed.

“The PRINCE doesn’t consider rivals. MACHIAVELLI is in season right now. The battleground will see more casualties. No one is holy.

“The APC’s problems are already being attributed to GANDUJE. After EL RUFAI was humiliated and rejected by the National Assembly, one expert even argued he ought to have brought him back. However, GANDUJE was aware of the true authority that had betrayed Nasiru and did not intervene.

Political Coalition Turns to ADC Following INEC’s ADA Registration Delay

0

Plans to formally accept the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the vehicle for opposing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 campaign for a second term were finalized by the coalition of opposition forces on Wednesday.
After the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) delayed the All Democratic Alliance’s (ADA) registration, coalition leaders reportedly decided to switch to ADC.
Following the breakdown of negotiations with the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the ADC has garnered popularity as the new political bride.

Note that prominent politicians such former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, and Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, were among the members of the alliance when it was publicly announced on March 20.
In an interview with Daily Trust on Monday, coalition chairman Dr. Umar Ardo affirmed that although the majority of leaders have embraced the ADC, the coalition has also decided to keep working on ADA registration.

The majority of the leaders will formally declare their stance on Wednesday, having already adopted ADC. However, we also decided that the new party registration and the ADC adoption could go on at the same time,” Ardo stated.

He revealed that those who support the registration of a new party are still certain that INEC will follow the law.

He stated that the coalition secretariat is dedicated to fulfilling all legal and procedural obligations.

He went on to say that supporting ADA registration and embracing the ADC are complementing rather than antagonistic.

“Registering a new party is a process, just like adopting an existing one,” Ardo stated. Both initiatives entail membership drives and grassroots mobilization. In the end, they both aim for the same goal.

Ardo gave two main arguments in favor of a new party’s registration. In the first place, he voiced concerns about “external manipulations” if the alliance merely merges into an already-existing party.

“Unfair influence is one of our biggest worries. A new party’s opponents worry that the government would meddle with INEC. However, because you have to deal with established interests, joining an existing party actually makes us more vulnerable to influence.

“You participate in transactional politics with current party owners rather than going to court in a clear registration process. Executives in the ADC, for example, who were elected in December 2022, have stated that they will not resign until December 2026, well after the primaries. “It’s a legal minefield that could lead to litigation, and a single court decision could turn everything upside down,” he warned.

His second worry was that devoted coalition members would be left out of the process. “You might make a lot of people feel excluded,” he said.

The political forces who overthrew Goodluck Jonathan in 2015 are no different from us if our only objective is to overthrow Tinubu in 2027. We need to do more than that. He stated, “The coalition ought to lead a renaissance—to transform the way things are done in this nation.”

In the meantime, Okey Ralph Nwosu, the longtime chairman and founding leader of the ADC, has been replaced as interim national chairman by former Senate President David Mark, a senior coalition member confirmed to Daily Trust.

Mark will guide the party through a period of transition and preside over the convention that will elect a meaningful National Working Committee, which is anticipated to take place in 2026.

Rauf Aregbesola, the former governor of Osun State, rejected the offer, hence the position of interim national secretary is still open.

The party’s reorganization and the planning of its national convention, which is anticipated to take place in 2026 and elect a substantive chairman and more members of the National Working Committee, will be supervised by David Mark, it has been decided. The secretary position, however, is still open. According to the source, the leaders have returned to locate a more suitable candidate.

Wike Alleges UniAbuja Illegally Acquired Land, Moves to Recover 7,000 Hectares

0

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has declared that 7,000 of the 11,000 hectares of land that were once owned by the University of Abuja (Uniabuja) have been seized.
Without the required paperwork, Wike claimed, the University walled up and annexed vast tracts of property in the Giri region for itself.
During the completion of recently built access roads in the region on Monday, the FCT Minister stated that the university’s administration may eventually decide to sell the land.

By alone, the university seized 11,000 hectares. I stated that wouldn’t occur. No paperwork, nothing. Without warning, they would have gone to sell our land, as you can see from the fencing they have everywhere,” Wike said.
The Minister instructed the Director of Lands and other pertinent authorities of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to provide the institution just 4,000 hectares, with the remaining land being reassigned for other district development projects.

He also mentioned that access roads would be built throughout the district to speed up the area’s infrastructure development and improve its livability.

After constructing this access road, we instructed the FCDA Executive Secretary and other pertinent organizations to begin drafting the specifics of how we plan to construct the district’s roads. Rest confident, then, that things might change in the upcoming year,” Wike warned.

In order to expedite the process, the Minister also offered FCTA’s cooperation for land availability, hinting at plans to collaborate with the National Assembly to build other institutions in the district.

Following the completion of the new access road, the district’s EFCC Academy is anticipated to open for business right away.

Since they can now transport their equipment and develop this thanks to access roads, they will begin the academy right away. Other individuals will also move in and build their own region when this happens,” he said.

In order to entice investors, Wike pledged that the FCTA would supply electricity, water, and roads.

The main issue we’re seeing is that when land is allotted, there are occasionally no infrastructure or amenities and people aren’t encouraged. We shall thus do every effort to ensure the provision of essential infrastructure,” he declared.
