Police arrests13 notorious thugs for attacking Senator Barau’s campaign office

In Kano, police have detained 13 people in connection with an attack on Senator Barau Jibrin’s governorship campaign office in 2023.

The campaign office was reportedly set on fire late Wednesday night by a mob of attackers numbering in the hundreds.

Jibrin is a member of the G-7, which is led by Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, a former governor of Kano State.

Shekarau is at odds with the party’s executive in the state, which is backed by Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

The G-7, on the other hand, scored a big victory on Tuesday when the FCT High Court recognized their ward congresses over Governor Ganduje’s.

Barau Jibrin, a senator representing Kano North, has his office near Maiduguri road, which is owned by Alhaji Musa Gwadabe, a former Minister of Labour and Productivity.

When we arrived at the office yesterday, we discovered that billboards had been torn down, with some being set ablaze. Despite the fact that the structure was not demolished, some elements of it were burned.

Some office furnishings, such as chairs and tables, were found smashed within the building, and the glass that surrounded the entrance and first level was also shattered. Both the doors and the windows were smashed.

However, security forces have already been dispatched to the area in order to prevent more law and order breakdowns.

In connection with the attack and setting fire to the campaign office, the Kano State Police Command has detained 13 hoodlums.

The criminals were detained carrying deadly weapons and illegal narcotics, according to the report.

Normalcy has already been restored, according to Police Spokesman Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, who also said that an investigation has begun and suspects will be prosecuted in court for prosecution.

50 YEARS OF THE NIGERIAN INSTITUTE OF JOURNALISM

0

Fifty years is a significant milestone in the life of anyone, organization, or nation. The Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) – Africa’s Center of Excellence for Media Training is celebrating in an instructive way.

Three journalism training institutes were created in Lagos, Nigeria, in 1963, focused primarily on the training of journalists and professionals (on the job) in the field of journalism.

Kenya and Tanzania offered human assistance to the school with the help of the International Press Institute (IPI), The Poynter Institute of Media Studies, St Petersburg, Florida, United States. Dr. Boye Ola (one of Nigeria’s finest photojournalists) was present. Lekan Otunfodurin and I both attended Poynter. Both of us are now part-time lecturers at the National Institute of Justice.

The objective of the NIJ was simple: to be Africa’s top and most prestigious mass communication and journalism educational institution; “the Centre of Communication Excellence.”

The mission was as expected, an institution dedicated to mass communication and journalism training and retraining through the use of a comprehensive curriculum and cutting-edge technology in an environment that promotes critical thinking, learning, good character, professionalism, ethical standards, research, and productivity.

The school began with an expatriate Director. Chief Dayo Duyile, the institution’s longest-serving leader, brought the era to a close. I was a post-graduate student during his administration, from 1992 to 1993. Ladan Salihu, former DG NBC; Mrs Sherifat Ahmed, Director FRCN, Abuja National Station; Osa Director, Publisher, and Lawyer; Tunde Ajibike, Director in the Ministry of Information, Oyo State; and Dotun Adenijo, former Registrar, NIJ, are just a few of my classmates.

Dr. Elizabeth Ikem, arguably the first Ph.D. holder to lead the institution, brought panache to the position and transformed NIJ from a training school to a monotechnic. She increased the number of experts and academics she was looking for. Mr. Okey Nwachukwu, the Executive Director of News at Voice of Nigeria, granted her permission to teach online journalism, multimedia, and new media part-time in 2009. After my presentation on Online Journalism at Professor Ralph Akinfeleye’s post-graduate class at the University of Lagos Mass Communication Department, Dr. Savage was essential in securing this opportunity.

After completing the Higher National Diploma Certificate program, NIJ students are now eligible to participate in the National Youth Service program (NYSC). Mr. Gbemiga Ogunleye, a lawyer and journalist, gave value to the school’s products and services. He was the driving force behind the National Institute of Justice’s rebranding project. He established a high bar that Gbenga Adefaye, former President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) and current Managing Editor / Editor-In-Chief of Vanguard Newspapers, has surmounted.

Gbemiga Ogunleye presented to the school a wonderful private sector initiative. Corporate organizations were invited in to lend a hand and provide technical assistance. The classrooms were equipped with air conditioners and projectors for teaching, and Access Bank came with a fresh new generator set. Gbemiga Ogunleye, like Dr. Elizabeth Ikem, was a school administrator and teacher. He enlisted the help of the National Communications Commission (NCC) and the US Embassy Public Affairs to set up computers, audio devices, and Internet access.

In every way, the Adefaye age is exceptional. He completed the PEN RADIO Radio Studio project. The NBC granted him a broadcasting license. The radio station is currently online and broadcasting in real time. He’s now on the hunt for a radio transmitter. He is actively in talks with international development partners and media NGOs, and he has continued Ogunleye’s rebranding initiative. The founding organizations of NIJ’s Code of Ethics is the first indication that you are indeed in a journalism school. The ethics of the profession must guide you. The NGE, NUJ, NIPR, and APCON were prominently displayed on the stairwell’s wall. The school also has a website that is up and running. Dr. Elizabeth Ikem created the website originally, with my help as Adjunct Faculty – New Media. We taught NIJ students how to maintain the website.

Each provost, as well as full-time and part-time teachers, are unwavering in their commitment to the vision and purpose statements. Industry experts are on hand at the academy to help students blend theory and practice. Print journalism, broadcast journalism, and public relations and advertising are among the courses offered at the school (PRAD). Specialized programs in writing, editing, photo journalism, and video production are also available.

Today, the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) promotes media industry stars in both the public and private sectors. Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, NTA (Diaspora Commission); Iyabo Wale-Eri, NTA; Mrs. Sherifat Ahmed, Radio Nigeria Abuja National Station; Gbenga Onayiga, FRCN; Mrs. Mary Atolagbe; Dr. Qasim Akinreti of Voice of Nigeria; John Momoh; Ini Thompson of Channels TV; Mrs. Olufunke Fadugba, Biola Aberua

Professor Ayandiji Daniel Aina, former Vice Chancellor of Caleb University, and Dr Saeed Timehin of LASU are giants and role models in other fields, particularly academics.

In the middle of the celebrations, the school faces a slew of issues, including a lack of funding from the school’s current proprietors, the Nigerian Press Organisation (NPO). Only the Nigerian Guild of Editors has showed interest in supporting the school financially. NIJ is having financial difficulties due to low school fees. The Jakande building requires extension; the classrooms are insufficient, and lecturers lack well-deserved research and comfort offices. The burden on the main school in Lagos has increased dramatically since all satellite campuses have closed. Outside of Lagos, there should be hostel facilities for the throngs of students. For students, the off-campus system is not optimal.

The inequality of a PGD credential for just Professional Masters Programs against an Academic Masters in Nigerian universities is particularly problematic. The school’s academic board must address this issue by filing a petition with the National Board of Technical Education and the National Universities Commission. PGD certificates are accepted by overseas universities. Ghana’s and Kenya’s journalism institutes have been designated as full-fledged universities, as well as unique media institutions. The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) cannot be any different. It should be a media-focused institution.

The NIJ alumni association will need to step up their engagement with the school in order to make long-term contributions to the institution’s progress. I am certain that the graduates have what it takes to turn the fortunes of NIJ around.

There’s also the possibility of the federal government taking over the school as a specialized university. The NPO and alumni should approach the proponent of this idea from the National Assembly and government circles on this issue. Is the planned takeover in the best interests of the public?

Dr. Akinreti, a 1992-93 NIJ alumnus, is the Deputy Director of the Digital Media Voice of Nigeria and the former Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Lagos State Council.

Clerics Mark a Special Day of Prayer For National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons

….Call on Development Partners to Sustain Aid

The College of Bishops , Imams and Clergy Councils (CBICON) said it will hold a one day national day of prayer for refugees in the country.

The council in a statement released to press men in Abuja by its national Coordinator , Rev Abel King noted that the gesture was in solidarity with the giant strides of the Imaam Sulaiman – Ibrahim led management within the last six months at the National Commission For Refugees , Migrants and Internally displaced Persons (NCRMI).

Rev King stated that the task of rehabilitating refugees was an onerous one and called on all and sundry to offer moral support to the Commision to succeed.

“We the clergy have seen a clear demonstration of the vision of the new federal commissioner in charge of the refugees Commission ” she comes on the job with zeal, determination and hope for those whose situation deserves complimentary interventions by the government ”

“First and foremost, the zero hunger campaign forms an integral part of the over all objective and goals of the commission” as religious leaders with contact with the masses, we can confirm that Nigerians are indeed proud of the milestones at the refugees Commission.

Imaam sulaiman – Ibrahim is doing things differently and productively too, she’s adding value to the Commision on many fronts” the Commision under her watch has lived above board ” we can only urge her to sustain the tempo.

“The joint national day of prayer for the Refugees Commission is a gesture that symbolises moral support of Nigerians , it is a Clarion call for all nigerians to contribute their quota to help actualise the Commissions goals.

“We also call on donor agencies, development partners and the government to consider more funding for the Commision in order to implement people centered interventions .

2023: NANS Urges Students to Use PVC to Assist in fulfilling civil responsibilities

The Southwest Zone D of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged all students in higher institutions in the zone to take advantage of the ongoing Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) to register for Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

Mr. Emmanuel Adegboye, NANS’ Southwest coordinator, made the announcement during a press conference in Ibadan on Wednesday.

Adegboye stated that it was critical to remind the zone’s over seven million Nigerian students of the importance of “registering for and obtaining PVC.”

Obtaining a voter’s card, he claims, will allow students to fulfill their civic responsibility of voting in general elections in 2023.

“It’s past time for NANS to move beyond activism and use our resources to actively participate in the selection of candidates for political office.”

“Nigerian students must play a civic role in nation-building, including having a say in who will be the country’s president and other electoral positions,” he said.

The NANS coordinator also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to make it easier for PVCs to be captured across campuses.

He claimed that bringing capturing centers closer to students would encourage them to register in large numbers while also easing the burden on the existing capturing centers.

He also urged the governors of the southwest states to re-energize their state electoral commissions and assist INEC in voter education and sensitization.

The facilitation of social reawakening, mindset re-engineering, and re-orientation, particularly in relation to Nigeria’s socio-economic systems and political landscape, was a major target for NANS executive, according to Adegboye.

John Alao, Southwest deputy coordinator, and Quadri Adeleke, NANS chairman in Oyo State, were also present at the press conference.

The press conference was also attended by Elijah Awoyinfa, Southwest Public Relations Officer; Teslim Bakare, Joint Campus Council PRO; and Ebenezer Olajide.

Stop blaming Senator Akume for your failure, Benue APC warns Gov Ortom

0

The Benue State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has advised Governor Samuel Ortom to quit blaming Minister of Special Duties and Inter-governmental Affairs, Senator George Akume, for his failures.

Speaking at a press conference today in Makurdi, chairman-elect, Austin Agada, said the motive of the governor’s recent campaign of calumny against the honourable minister is to ultimately diminish his chances of becoming the party’s national chairman, having recognised his national acceptance.

According to Agada, the fraud allegation currently levelled against Senator Akume is a political witch-hunt, similar to the N107b alleged fraud levelled against his predecessor Gabriel Suswam.

The APC chairman-elect noted that this is another divisonary tactic used by the governor like he has done in time past to shift the people’s attention.

“Let it be known to all APC faithful and the whole world that the fraud allegation currently levelled against Senator Akume by Gov. Irtom and his government is clearly an act of political witch-hunt,” he said.

“Why conjure a haphazard probe report about the Akume administration of many years now, same way this same government had levelled the 107 billion naira allegation against the Gabriel Suswam administration but later nullified same; will the same government not overrule itself tomorrow over these frivolous reports that seek to indict Senator Akume today?”

Agada lamented that never a time has Benue State been this stagnant in terms of policy framework and development, noting that no sector of the state economy is working.

While dismissing the Governor’s insinuation that Benue people are drunkards, the APC chieftain revealed that government workers and pensioners are still being owed for several month.

Agada, however, called on the governor to face task of governance before and avoid the careless affront on President Muhammadu Buhari, Senator George Akume and the suffering population of Benue state that he has already branded happily as drunkards.

Read full statement below:

Gentlemen of the press, it has become expedient that the state exco- elect of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Benue State lend its voice on the current state of affairs in Benue, especially as it concerns activities of the Ortom administration and the governor’s unguarded utterances that are bringing our state to public ridicule. It is often said that ‘evil reigns when people of conscience decide to unwittingly keep sealed lips in the face of glaring absurdities’.

The APC in Benue, as you all know is the major opposition, a party with the dominant population whose mandate was robbed in a controversially complicated happenstance. But having gauged the overwhelming incompetence and drought of progressive governance ideas on the part of the current PDP government in Benue, history again beckons on our party(APC) urgently wrestle power from PDP in the next electoral dispensation so as to allow Benue taste a bit of development like other states of the federation.

To start with, we are greatly dismayed at the manner with which Gov. Samuel Ortom and his few supporters have been clutching at straws to foist the reasons for his legendary poor performance as governor on the Leader of our party in Benue, Senator Dr George Akume, Honourable Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs. These attacks on our Leader have been brewed consistently over time and intermittently unleashed on him with great mischiefs. But while we may have tolerated this bashing for so long, the governor has again embarked on a dangerous campaign of calumny, trying so desperately to run down the towering profile of Senator Akume, who is one of the very few Nigerian past governors without criminal records.

The target of this campaign of calumny, we ultimately know is to lower Senator Dr George Akume who is highly celebrated by many Nigerians in the eyes of the public thereby, weakening his chances of emerging as the National Chairman of the APC, now that majority of APC members across all states of the federation are clamouring for his emergence to the position.

Let it be known to all APC faithful and the whole world that the fraud allegation currently levelled against Senator Akume by Gov. Ortom and his government is clearly an act of political witch-hunt. Why conjure a haphazard probe report about the Akume administration of many years now, same way this same government had levelled the 107 billion naira allegation against the Gabriel Suswam administration but later nullified same; will the same government not overrule itself tomorrow over these frivolous reports that seek to indict Senator Akume today?

To those of us who are conversant with operations of the present day Benue State Government, this is merely another diversionary tactics. This administration has a history of raising unfounded claims and excuses, each time more money comes into the state. You will recall that since the day it was confirmed that the federal government has made available another tranche of over 18 Billion Naira bailout to Benue State, Gov. Samuel Ortom has become strangely more loquacious and hostile, not just to his benefactor, Senator Akume but also to the Benue civil servants and pensioners that he has refused to pay their salaries and pensions; the internally displaced persons that he has described as thieves stealing his cassava from the farm and now, rudely referring to all Benue people as drunkards who idly start drinking as early as 9am daily, till dawn which you all know cannot be the true identity of the Benue people who have been known over the years as very hard working and great farmers.

It is regrettable that rather than employ Benue people, the Ortom administration has perfidiously sacked thousands of youths(SURE-P interns) that were absorbed into the Benue State civil service by his predecessor; he has also sacked many other civil servants as ghost workers without employing others, an act that has skyrocketed the rate of unemployment in the state. Despite all the sacks, the salary wage bill of Benue under his administration has rather climbed to over 7 billion naira, based on his claims. In all fairness, what has Gov. Samuel Ortom done to take the Benue man off the street and alcohol in the last 6 years of his administration? What has been the social intervention programme of his administration when businesses are rather closing down in Benue due to multiple taxations? The governor ought to have been ashamed that despite his deliberate impoverishment of the state, his subject could still afford a bottle of beer to sip and forget their poverty and misery.

Never for once has Benue State been this stagnant in terms of policy framework and development. No sector of the state economy seems to be working. State workers are currently owed about 7 months arrears of salary in Benue, primary school teachers and local government staff are owed for over one year while pensioners are still owed for over 32 months, not to mention their gratuities. Benue farmers are denied farm inputs to boost their food production while farming in Benue remains at the subsistence level in this modern age.

We wish to establish sufficiently that the present Benue State Government lacks the capacity and basic ideas on how best to develop the state and should not be allowed another chance to succeed itself. It is on this note that we reiterate our earlier call on all officials of the Ortom administration to honourably resign and live their lives, rather than continue to smile while suffering and deceiving themselves that they are in government. We have equally uncovered his plans to appoint more “Suffering Special Assistants(SSAs)” for the sake of elections that are fast approaching and we can only sympathize with those helpless victims that may be named eventually.

We call on the governor to face squarely, the herculean task of governance before him in the exiting phase of his administration and avoid the careless affront on President Muhammadu Buhari, Senator Dr George Akume and the suffering population of Benue state that he has already branded happily as drunkards. For now, history has recorded that the Ortom administration is the worst that Benue State has ever experienced.

BREAKING: Court sacks Ganduje-led APC executives in Kano

0

The All Progressives Congress (APC) officials loyal to Kano State governor Abdullahi Ganduje were fired by a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court on Tuesday.

The court, presided over by Justice Hamza Muazu, accepted all of the Senator Ibrahim Shekarau faction’s requests, based on the fact that the Ganduje-led group failed to hold ward and local government congresses.

According to sources, Abdullahi Abbas leads the Ganduje-led side, while Ahmadu Haruna Zago leads the Shekarau faction.

The outcome of the parallel congress, which generated about 19,000 candidates loyal to Senator Shekarau, was upheld by the court.

Any other congresses organized outside of the one led by Prince Abdullahi Abbas were previously deemed illegal by Governor Ganduje.

The G-7 group led by Shekarau, who had fronted parallel leadership under the chairperson of Haruna Ahmadu Danzago, contested Ganduje’s claim that the party had ended with the nomination of candidates for the congresses under a consensual arrangement.

The candidates nominated by Shekarau’s side were aware of the results of the other congresses and attempted to have the procedure that produced them annulled outright.
