Lagos orders the closure of Dowen College after Oromoni’s death

0

The Lagos state government has ordered Dowen College in Lekki to be closed indefinitely due to the issue surrounding the murder of Sylvester Oromoni Jnr.

For declining to join a cult, the 12-year-old was allegedly assaulted by “several senior workers.”

The student’s father, who shares his son’s surname, stated that the allegations surrounding his death were “real.”

He further alleged that his son was fed a liquid substance and coerced into remaining silent about the incident.

The school, on the other hand, had previously disregarded the allegation, claiming that he had just been injured while playing football with his classmates.

Folasade Adefisayo, the commissioner of education, declared an indefinite shutdown of Dowen College following a meeting with the institution’s administration and workers on Friday.

“The Lagos State Government has ordered the indefinite closure of Dowen College, Lekki, pending the outcome of an investigation into the death of Sylvester Oromoni Jnr, a student at the school,” said Ganiu Lawal, the Lagos state ministry of education’s spokeswoman.

“After a meeting with the School Management and Staff, Commissioner for Education Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo announced the closure.”

“The Commissioner urged calm and stated that no effort will be spared in determining the cause of the occurrence.”

Dowen College had published a letter to parents about its preparations to close for two days when she made her announcement.

“We have advised that our kids stay home tomorrow, Friday 3rd, and Monday 6th, in light of the current situation concerning the school and considering the feelings of the students,” it had said.

“This will also give the pupils time to prepare for their upcoming exams, which will begin next week.”

As investigations continue, it is understood that the late boy’s parents have mobilized to protest his death.

Umahi’s planned return to the PDP is dismissed by the APC

PDP and APC in Ebonyi

The report on Governor Dave Umahi’s planned return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was described as fake by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi State on Friday (PDP).

The party’s Publicity Secretary in the state, Simbard Ogbuatu, issued a statement in Abakaliki advising its members to disregard the report.

The APC was responding to a claim made by a PDP chieftain in Abia State simply known as Dr. Isaac Nkole about the governor’s “desperate move” to rejoin the party he left last year.

“The All Progressives Congress in Ebonyi has had the news making the rounds in the media with the headline ‘Orji Kalu, Umahi in a desperate move to return to PDP,’ attributed to one Dr. Isaac Nkole, a PDP chieftain in Abia,” Ogbuatu said.

“The chieftain was quoted in the report as saying that Governor Dave Umahi wants to return to the PDP as well.”

“However, we wish to state unequivocally that Umahi has not made, and will never make, any move to return to the ‘Social Club’ known as PDP, either in person, through a representative, or through a surrogate.”

The APC spokesman insisted that Umahi has been a key member of the party for over a year and urged the public to dismiss the report as a “figment of the originator’s imagination.”

He went on to say that the governor’s decision to join the APC was made for the greater good of Ebonyi and the South-East region as a whole, not for personal gain.

“Umahi’s defection to the national party did not come as a shock to him, nor did he join for personal gain,” he continued.

“The defection is a well-considered decision made in the best interests of Ebonyi in particular and the South-East in general.”

“His Excellency saw the need to follow in the footsteps of former nationalists from the zone, such as late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, who had always believed in centre-right politics.”

According to a source, Ologun retired from the General Hospital in Mopa as a Theater Nurse a few years ago.

His untimely death has been widely reported on social media.

In Taraba State, eleven people were killed yesterday in a brutal battle between farmers and Fulani herdsmen.

The killing occurred after many peace agreements between the warring parties failed to cease the state’s killings.

Several persons were alleged to have been displaced as a result of the turmoil that happened yesterday at Gassol Local Council.

According to sources, eleven persons were killed in the council’s revenge strike between the Tiv and Fulani ethnic groups.

According to the source, the retaliation attack came after a Fulani herder was robbed and slain by suspected Tiv criminals on his way from Sansani market.

Apart from his brother’s death, the whereabouts of two of his female daughters are unknown, according to one of the attack’s victims.

The victim, identified only as Korbee David, requested the state administration to restore normalcy as soon as possible so that they could seek for their missing loved ones.

He claimed that the villagers had previously recovered six bodies, with the Vigilante group assisting in the retrieval of four more.

“I earnestly plead with the responsible authorities to wade in,” the sufferer added. Several members of our community remain unaccounted for as I speak with you.

“I can’t give you the precise number of victims right now since the Fulanis are continuously hunting and killing people on their fields,” says the narrator.

According to the report, some people were slain along the boundary between Gassol and Wukari Local Council, according to the Chief of Bantaje Chiefdom, Yahaya Abubakar Rufai.

Abdullahi Usman, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), did not pick up or respond repeated calls for confirmation made to his known cell phone numbers.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC) has revealed that three of its employees were killed by suspected sea pirates in the Okoroma town of Nembe Local Council in Bayelsa State.

On Sunday, three Agip employees and some members of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were ambushed by rampaging sea pirates while repairing some facilities near the Obama oil flow station. Three Agip employees and one NSCDC employee were confirmed dead.

“With deep regret, Eni confirms that a group of Eni contractors escorted by security personnel were attacked by an armed group, causing as far as we know three fatalities and two injuries,” NAOC said in an emailed statement.

Buhari Commissions 40.27-kilometer Enugu-Ebonyi Road and warns against speeding

President Muhammadu Buhari has stated that his administration’s commitment to improve road transportation infrastructure, ease of doing business, generate jobs, and lift people out of poverty is paying off.

On Thursday, President Buhari spoke during the official commissioning of the 40.27-kilometer Nnenwe-Odume and Ishiagu mile 2 highways in Enugu and Ebonyi states, respectively.

President Buhari, who was represented by Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, said that as his government nears its end, he is entering a season of project completion and delivery.

“As you can see, we are handing over the 40.27km Nnenwe–Oduma–Uburu Road Section I (26.27km) and Section II: Spur to Ishiagu-Mile 2 Road today,” Buhari stated (14km).

“This road connects the states of Enugu and Ebonyi and is an important part of our national road network.” This road was built to the highest design and craftsmanship standards, and if properly maintained and not misused, it should survive for the intended service life.”

Road abuse, according to Buhari, can take many forms, including overloading vehicles and trucks, which accelerates pavement damage, spilling petroleum products, which dissolves the components and allows water to penetrate, and converting road shoulders to permanent parking spaces, which causes road failure.

He cautioned the communities through which these roads ran not to allow them to decay.

“We must all do our utmost to prevent these behaviors, report them when they occur, and act lawfully to put an end to them,” he said.

“The road is also a story of our people’s capacity. The thousands of patriotic Nigerians who were directly employed to build this road, as well as the hundreds of vendors who were indirectly employed to provide the machines used in the construction.

“This route also serves as a declaration of economic efficiency and convenience of conducting business.” Of all, this is one of our many paths to riches, because shorter travel times equal lower travel costs, and time is money.”

Earlier, Babatunde Raji Fashola, the Minister of Works and Housing, stated that the Federal Government’s service-driven progressive train, which began in the North West and ended in the North Central, had arrived in the South East.

“It brings me great pleasure, therefore, to offer the good news of our administration to the people and governments of Enugu and Ebonyi States, who will be impacted by the Nnewe-Uduma Road Sections I and II that our President will hand over today,” Fashola said.

“After the recent handing over of the Sokoto-Tambuwal-Jega-Kontagora-Makera Road and the Vandeikya-Obudu Cattle Ranch Road, I am happy to reiterate that this is the third of many more project completions and hand-overs our country will see in the coming weeks and months as we enter what I call a season of completion and impact.”

Nigeria and South Africa Move for Continental Leadership

I’m rather certain that South Africa’s President, Cyril Matamela Ramaphosa, is not now on a tour of West African traditional dances.

He’s not in West Africa to see who makes the best jollof rice….

As a strategic thinker, he sees certain potential in the issues that Nigeria faces. After all, pursuing, protecting, and promoting a serious country’s national interest is not a sentimental pastime.

He has ended his visit to Nigeria, the “Giant of Africa,” the first of a four-nation West Africa visit, amid COVID-19 ‘Omicron’ fears.

On the 2nd and 3rd of December, Ramaphosa will speak at the Africa Investment Forum’s opening session in Côte d’Ivoire. From December 4 to 5, he will be in Ghana, and then from December 6 to 7, he will be in Senegal.

Ramaphosa has been President of South Africa since February 15, 2018. He rose to prominence as a youthful and dynamic former trade union leader around the time Nelson Mandela was liberated from a remote prison on South Africa’s Robben Island.

Without a question, Ramaphosa has been in the forefront of national liberation and economic empowerment politics for South Africa’s indigenous African populations and so-called “colored” peoples.

It’s worth noting that he served as the principal negotiator for Nelson Mandela’s African National Congress (ANC) during the country’s transition from apartheid to multi-ethnic democracy. He was one of the architects of the first election in April 1994, which resulted in Mandela’s election as South Africa’s first post-apartheid president.

In addition, his influence rose in the 1990s as the leader and strategist of the National Union of Mine Workers, South Africa’s most powerful trade union at the time (NUM).

Mandela privately expressed his belief that Cyril would be a worthy and likely future president to his confidantes.
Ramaphosa appears to have known his time would come, and he opted to act mostly in the financial and economic spheres.
Regardless, he kept a close eye on the African National Congress (ANCactions )’s and leadership dynamics, as shown in my book MLK, Mandela, and Achebe: Power Leadership & Identity, published in 2022. MLKMandelaAchebe.com

He was elected President of one of Africa’s oldest political organizations and liberation movements on December 18, 2017. As they say, the rest is history.

Comrade Ramaphosa became a highly successful and wealthy business executive a few years later, thanks to a combination of lucrative investments, expanded prospects for Blacks, and clever relationships. He has also been on the board of MTN, a corporation that provides information, telecommunications, and financial services. Ramaphosa is valued at least R7 billion South African Rand (US $500 million) according to USAfrica and USAfricaonline.com News Index 2021.

Remember that on July 9, 2021, I wrote a statement titled “Zuma’s troubles and wasting of Mandela’s legacy” in my weekly column on this platform. It was about what happened on July 7, 2021, when South Africa’s former President Jacob Zuma — a 79-year-old grandfather and (ex) freedom warrior — surrendered to authorities at a correctional services facility (prison).

The ANC’s mistakes have been disastrous, forcing it to lose elections and seats that millions of people believed were’safe seats’ for the party. No, not any longer!

My point remains that it is unfortunate but true that some of the notorious financial criminals who are making life difficult for South Africa’s poor people rose to power under the ANC’s banner, as evidenced by the ANC’s countless violations of citizens’ rights, particularly the seasonal violence and xenophobia perpetrated against other African residents and migrant workers in various parts of the richly blessed country.

Seriously, I believe he aspires to boost South Africa’s clout and position as an influential power actor and possible leader across the continent. But first and foremost, he must correct his country’s home atmosphere.

Nigeria awaits FG decision on Twitter ban, which hits six months

0

In exactly two days, on December 5, the Federal Government would have stopped Twitter operations in Nigeria for the sixth time.

Despite the fact that the Federal Government announced last week that Twitter had complied with all of the restrictions placed on it before it could resume operations in Nigeria, Nigerians are concerned that the ban has not been removed.

On June 4, the Federal Government announced the suspension of Twitter operations in Nigeria, following the social media giant’s deletion of a message by President Muhammadu Buhari for “violation of the company’s abusive behavior policy.”

Telecommunications firms imposed the suspension on June 5, and Nigerians awoke to a Twitter blackout across all platforms.

President Muhammadu Buhari, in his Independence Day anniversary speech on October 1, sounded as if all outstanding difficulties had been settled, ordering the suspension to be lifted provided the organization met the government’s demands. In fact, several headlines led readers to believe that the prohibition had been lifted immediately. However, Twitter remains banned 64 days after Buhari’s October 1 announcement, with prices spiraling.

Businesses impacted by the embargo, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), as well as government at all levels, have felt the effects of the ban. They are still bearing the brunt of the suspension, even as the economy suffers. It had also wreaked havoc on Nigerians, particularly those involved in the internet community.

According to NetBlocks, a watchdog group that monitors cyber-security and Internet governance, each hour of the suspension costs Nigeria $250,000 (N102.5 million), totaling N2.46 billion per day. Inevitably, this means that the economy has lost around N447 billion in the last six months as a result of the prohibition.

Festus Keyamo, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, declared on November 28 that Twitter had agreed to all of the terms for the suspension to be lifted.

Twitter has “agreed to all the requirements,” according to Keyamo, who is a member of the committee set up to engage Twitter over its suspension.

“The president’s action was taken to re-calibrate our relationship with Twitter, not to push them out of our nation.” “We’ve started that recalibration, and the president gladly appointed me to the committee,” he said.

Most Nigerians, particularly those who run their companies on the microblogging platform, have subsequently shifted to platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Telegram, according to the Guardian.

Gbenga Adebayo, Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), said on Twitter that “we’re not privy to the arrangement between parties, but it goes to suggest that such an agreement may not be a plug and play.”

ALTON, according to Adebayo, wishes that the parties reach an agreement as quickly as possible so that users’ economic losses, as well as the ban’s reputation and social consequences, be minimized.

“The longer we wait, the more we lose,” he explained, “because Nigerian users are experiencing the impact more than Twitter as a service is feeling the loss of traffic and money.”

“I believe the issue may be related to the fact that deadlines for when Twitter will have a physical presence in the country and how taxes may be rendered are still to be established,” stated Olusola Teniola, Nigerian Coordinator, Alliance for Affordable Internet (A4AI). This may now be a chance for the FG to reach out to Twitter and offer assistance so that they may feel at ease in the enabling business environment that the government is working on.”

The Alexandrians, on the other hand, scored the game-winning goal in the 92nd minute to capture the three points.

2023: Choosing PDP Presidential Candidate Will Be Turbulent – Wike

Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State, has stated that the process of picking the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential nominee for 2023 will be tumultuous.

In a recent interview with a major television station in Port Harcourt, the state capital, the governor stated that only a PDP administration could save the country from its current problems.

He stated that he would not support a presidential candidate who is unprepared for the work ahead.

“Don’t let anyone persuade you that selecting a presidential candidate will be simple.

“No way, it’ll never happen.” You should be aware that there are two forms of turbulence. Turbulence that does not cause a crash is known as normal turbulence. There is enough turbulence that a crash is likely.

“The volatility we’re seeing in PDP is natural turbulence, and I believe we’ll be able to get through it.” APC turbulence, on the other hand, is turbulence that is likely to result in a crash.

“The PDP has redeemed itself in terms of what Nigerians demand because they are tired of what is happening in the country.” As a result, they require an alternative, and the PDP is currently the only viable option,” he explained.

“As a result, if you want to run for president under the PDP, I will not back someone who simply wants to run under the name of a former presidential candidate; I will not agree to it.” “I need to see that you’re ready for it, and that you’re ready to tackle this evil called APC,” he stated.
