The person who has a second eye

0

A retired military officer with whom I usually share easy moments called me last week. I was expecting him to blame me, as he always does, for his occasional dalliances with Victorian blue stockings. This time, however, he did not. He was preoccupied with a more serious matter. The urgency in his voice was palpable. “Amanze, why aren’t your people declaring for the presidency?” he thundered as I struggled to adjust to his new mood. What’s the matter with your people? Look, if you don’t push for it, no one will give you the presidency.”

Without hesitation, I responded. “Anyim has made his declaration. Ohuabunwa has made his declaration. Others, such as Peter Obi, are getting warmed up. “There’s also Moghalu in the picture.” The man, on the other hand, was adamantly opposed. “Anyim has not made a declaration.” But I was adamant that he had. My friend, on the other hand, was not convinced. He then stated that he would call Anyim to speak with him directly. He said nothing about the other names I mentioned.

I understood my officer-point friend’s of view. He was simply reiterating the widely held belief among many Nigerians that the Igbo are pursuing the presidency half-heartedly. Such Nigerians wonder why, despite their strong desire for the presidency, no one is willing to declare for the position. Many Nigerians believe that the Igbo are agitating for the presidency in the abstract, that they are not putting their blood and sweat into the campaign. “Where are the aspirants?” they frequently inquire. In their agitation, the overarching impression is that the Igbo are not matching words with action.

However, I have always maintained that the Igbo are not timid in this regard. It’s possible that the lack of a large number of candidates is a strategic decision. A large number of Igbo aspirants could pollute the air. It could be used as a weapon by those who will stop at nothing to criticize the Igbo approach to the presidential campaign. As the situation unfolds, however, we must begin our investigation with those who have stood up to be counted. Former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim is one of these individuals.

I had portrayed Anyim as a man with highly developed intuitive abilities for a long time. As an analyst and commentator, I watched him sift through the banana peels that littered the office of the Senate President at the time he held the position. He persevered in the face of adversity. Anyim took a step back after that tense ride. He isn’t a slacker when it comes to politics. He bides his time, waiting for the right opportunity. That’s why, after serving as Senate President, he remained in the background for two election seasons. Then, as the year 2011 approached, Anyim said, “Count me in.” He had completed his homework. The eight-year political slumber was well-rewarded. He was appointed Secretary to the Government of the Federation when he stepped forward.

Anyim is well-versed in the art of beating a tactical retreat and standing up to be counted. That was my greeting to him as I welcomed the diverse group of people who attended my book launch last month. The event was chaired by Anyim. “Anyim Pius Anyim, the wary politician who knows when to be in and when to be out of politics set the tone for what turned out to be a huge intellectual and political fiesta,” I had said of him in BROKEN TONGUES of October 18, 2021, when recounting the event. Anyim isn’t one to squander words. He has a quick wit that matches his actions to his words.” That was my assessment of this squeamish politician.

There is, however, a lot more to say about Anyim. The man is always on the lookout. He is cautious, circumspect, and always on the lookout. Many people associate him with the sixth sense because of his intuitive abilities. But I’m not going to come across as a lunatic. I have a strong suspicion that the man has a second eye. He has the ability to examine things critically. He has the ability to see beyond the obvious. That is why I believe he made a well-considered decision to run for president at this time. Anyim must have completed his homework, as he usually does. He had to have given the situation some thought. In his ratiocination and analysis, he must have used the second eye. And after a thorough investigation, Anyim is convinced that this is the best opportunity.

The reasoning behind Anyim’s decision to run for president is inextricably linked to the Nigerian situation. The country is engulfed in a raging debate. After Buhari, where does the presidency go? Individuals and interest groups have gone back and forth on this issue. However, the pull continues to pull to the south east. The zone has every advantage going for it. If Nigeria is still concerned about equity, power is set to return to the south. We don’t need to say how much the south east, more than any other southern region, deserves that position. This will occur if justice and fairness are included in the equation. This combination is the key to the country’s peace and progress.

Anyim has been selling this idea to Nigerians as a man with a strong sense of justice. Anyim was one of the strong voices that pulled the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) back from self-destruction when certain hawks within the party tried to railroad the party into zoning the presidency to the north in 2023. The PDP is still undecided on the issue. However, it is hoped that in the end, wise counsel will prevail.

When Nigerians realize that having a president of Igbo descent will benefit the country, people like Anyim will benefit. The Igbo are more open-minded than any other majority ethnic group. Given their cosmopolitan outlook, they are more Nigerian than the rest of the flock. Because Nigeria is their canvas, the Igbo man is the ultimate brush tool who, if given the chance to serve the country, will leave no space unmanned. This Igbo tendency is exemplified by the Anyims of the south east.

Anyim has built bridges of understanding as a man who has always operated at the center. Friendships with his companions spanned multiple zones. His friends from outside his ethnic group, for example, believe in him. Nigerians believe Anyim when he says he will bring disparate groups together for the good of the country. They believe him when he says he will provide the leadership that Nigeria sorely lacks. They trust him because he has been put to the test. Now is the time to put your complete trust in him. Sifting through the rubble is this man with a second eye. He promises to locate the woods’ tree.

SERAP has filed a lawsuit against Buhari over the EndSARS report, requesting that the court order the suspects’ arrest

0

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), a non-governmental organization, and 116 concerned Nigerians have filed a lawsuit in the Federal High Court in Abuja, asking the court to order and compel President Muhammadu Buhari to take immediate steps to ensure the arrest of soldiers and police officers indicted by the Lagos #EndSARS panel report for the shooting of peaceful protesters at the Lekki Toll-Gate, as well as cases of police brutality.

SERAP is also asking the court to order and compel President Buhari to bring to justice anyone suspected of being responsible for the shooting of peaceful protesters, as well as to ensure access to justice and effective remedies for victims, including adequate compensation, in the suit number FHC/ ABJ/CS/1482/2021 filed on Friday.

“It is in the interest of justice to grant this application,” SERAP claims in the suit, “as it would improve respect for Nigerians’ rights, the rule of law, and public confidence in government institutions, as well as reduce the growing culture of impunity among perpetrators.”

“The safety of Nigerian protesters remains as precarious as ever, and impunity for crimes against them is growing,” according to SERAP. Perpetrators are emboldened by impunity. Failure to bring those charged with shooting peaceful protesters to justice is a violation of their right to life and dignity in and of itself.”

“The flagrant lack of accountability for past violations of protesters’ rights has led to a growing sense of powerlessness and resentment not only among victims and their families but also among the general public,” according to SERAP.

“The failure to promptly arrest and bring to justice those suspected of being responsible for the shooting of peaceful protesters, as well as to ensure victims and their families have access to justice and effective remedies amounts to a travesty of justice,” SERAP added.

“An order of mandamus to direct and compel President Buhari to ensure that those still detained solely for peacefully exercising their human rights are immediately and unconditionally released, and all charges against them are dropped,” according to SERAP.

A nonagenarian predicts Tinubu’s ascension to the presidency in 2023

Pa Raphael Aina Okeowo, 91, has predicted that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), will be elected president of Nigeria in 2023.

Pa Okeowo, who is neither a prophet nor a minister of God, told journalists in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, that he had a dream in which he was told by a group of people that Tinubu would be given the reins of power.

“I hardly dream, but whenever I do, my dream always comes true,” Okeowo said, recounting the events. I’m not a politician, and I’m not looking for attention; all I want to do is share this dream with Nigerians so they can see what God has planned for them. I was sleeping when a group of people suddenly gathered on a bed next to mine and put their heads together, talking about something I couldn’t hear. They were all dressed in the same Ankara fabric.

“I heard them say, ‘Let’s give it to Tinubu,’ shortly after they had discussed it. And they all agreed that Tinubu would be the one to receive it.

“I then awoke.” It took less than a minute from start to finish. But what matters is that whenever I have these kinds of dreams, they come true.

“I was baptized at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Akure when I was still young and single, despite the fact that I am a Christian but not a prophet.” Rev. Father Oguntuyi was the one who baptized me. But now I go to C.A.C Bethel, which is very close to where I live.

“I would have been killed if it hadn’t been for God’s intervention.” On my next birthday, I want Jesus to take me away. Because this world is wicked, I’m praying for it.”

The massacre in Lekki and a country in the dark

0

The Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Restitution for Victims of SARS-Related Abuse and Other Matters, which also investigated the Lekki toll gate shootings, signed a scorching 309-page report that has caught the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Police, and the Lekki Concession Company off guard after a year of heart-wrenching hearings. On the night of October 20, 2020, while protesters sat peacefully at the Lekki toll gate, waving the Nigerian flag and singing the Nigerian national anthem, state actors brutally and fatally broke up a protest that brought together the voices of many Nigerians at home and abroad against police brutality. At least nine people were killed, according to the findings of the Judicial Panel of Inquiry. Following one of Nigeria’s bloodiest nights, the various state actors implicated in the killings scrambled to deflect blame for a cyclopean national tragedy. The Nigerian government and the Nigerian Army typically spat fire and brimstone when eyewitnesses and the media, including foreign media, recounted what they saw. The Nigerian government went after the Channel News Network (CNN) at one point, accusing it of spreading fake news.

When TheEconomist published an opinion piece on the Nigeria Army’s operations on October 25, 2021, the Army tore into the newspaper, putting up a strong defense of its method of operation in the process.

What does it have to say now, though? Nigerians laud and applaud the sacrifices made by young Nigerian soldiers on the frontlines to keep the country safe from savage criminals. What does the Nigerian Army have to say about the actions of some of its men at the Lekki toll gate on the night of October 20, 2020, in the face of this historic indictment? Every day, Nigerian soldiers, many of whom are barely in their twenties, make the ultimate sacrifice to keep the country safe in the trenches of a heartbreaking war against terrorism and banditry. Every day, young Nigerian soldiers are killed by Boko Haram or ISWAP terrorists in order to protect the country’s sovereignty. Nigerians mourn as a nation whenever this happens. The Lekki toll gate massacre, on the other hand, did something different: it shattered the heart of a long-suffering country.

Nigerians can now work in Nigeria and be paid in US dollars, according to breaking news. To apply now, go to this link.

Nigeria has been plagued by insecurity for several years. With savage terrorists fanning the flames of terrorism in the north, other criminals emboldened by Boko Haram’s and ISWAP’s surprising successes have scurried out of hiding to turn Nigeria into a hotbed of insecurity. Thousands of people have been slaughtered, and entire towns have been looted. Countless structures have been demolished, and thousands of people have lost their jobs. Countless people are still held captive for no apparent reason. The Nigerian Army has shown heroic courage in the face of a never-ending barrage of terrorist fire. It is no exaggeration to say that the country would have been overrun by terrorists if not for the soldiers’ valor.

Nigerians have always reacted angrily whenever the Nigerian Army appears to be shortchanged, no matter how insignificantly, in gratitude for their many sacrifices. It’s difficult not to feel the national outrage that erupts whenever allegations of money being diverted from arms purchases or the alleged poor welfare of soldiers on the front lines are made.

The Nigerian Army, on the other hand, now has questions to answer. Have Nigerian soldiers turned into assassins of unarmed Nigerians? The actions of some of its men at the Lekki toll gate on October 20, 2020, have left a sour taste in my mouth. What was the justification for using such disproportionately lethal force against the protesters? Is there no other option? Was it necessary for soldiers to slaughter young men and women whose only crime was protesting against institutionalized brutality in a country that had already been turned into a river of innocent blood due to the monumental folly of a few? Each of the bullets fired by Nigerian soldiers on October 20, 2021, to kill unarmed protesters triggered a flood of painful memories. Nigerians recall the Nigerian Army’s ignominious role in halting the country’s democratic transition in 1966 and, as a result, exacerbating the country’s numerous problems. Nigerians recall how military dictators squandered much of the country’s wealth. Military men played a significant role in the Nigerian civil war, which Nigerians remember. Nigerians remember Dele Giwa, Ken Saro-Wiwa, and all the other victims of military dictatorships.

On the night of October 20,2021, the Nigerian Army betrayed disturbing bloodlust in a country with extremely weak institutions and many all-powerful ogas who are ogres of heavy-handedness and corruption.

There have been allegations of extrajudicial killings of innocent Nigerians by Nigerian soldiers all over the country. A country that has been scarred by thousands of unnecessary deaths is not about to forget. The Nigerian Police’s ignominious role in the massacre comes as little surprise. Is it possible for a leopard to change its spots? The protest, which crammed the Lekki toll gate with protesters on that fateful night, was against police brutality, and the Nigerian Police, true to their dreadful reputation, used bloodthirsty brutes to crush it.

It is unlikely that the Nigeria Police Force will ever have the level of supreme professionalism that is required for effective law enforcement. The Nigerian Police Force is unlikely to abandon its signature operational tools of torture and extortion any time soon. Many Nigerian institutions are global champions of widespread corruption. The reason is self-evident. The Lagos State Government established the Judicial Panel of Inquiry, which discovered that the soldiers who murdered unarmed protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate were there on the Lagos State Government’s invitation. It can only be described as scandalous that on one of Nigeria’s most historic nights, preservation politics took precedence over the sanctity of human lives. The report has exposed the snakes who work for the Lekki Concession Company as businessmen without morals, experts in the darkest arts of business, and practitioners of ‘commerce without morality,’ as the immortal Mahatma Gandhi put it.

On that night, what happened to the lights? Why did the Lekki Concession Company turn off the lights to allow the killers of Nigerian dreams to move in and plunge an entire country into stygian darkness as young Nigerians cried out against police brutality on that eternal night? The Lekki Concession Company intentionally tampered with the cameras and attempted to conceal evidence, according to the Judicial Panel of Inquiry. The Lekki Concession Company will go down in history as an accomplice in the brutal murder of innocent Nigerians by state actors for prioritizing perverse profiteering over the suffering of innocent Nigerians. Although the Judicial Panel of Inquiry made some broad recommendations, it is obvious that the sanctions will be limited. Mr. Lai Mohammed, the Culture and Information Minister at the time of the massacre and since has shown this through his body language and apocalyptic utterances.

Whatever happens, a night that many wanted to wrap in eternal darkness and silence has been given light and sound. The blood of all those killed by police brutality prior to October 20, 2020, as well as those massacred on that bloodiest of nights, will continue to stain Nigeria’s image, particularly the consciences of those complicit in the indiscriminate slaughter. They will never be able to live in peace. They will never have a happy ending in history.

Mr Ibu denies endorsing Tinubu for the presidency in 2023, Atiku is my candidate

Mr Ibu, a veteran Nollywood actor, has responded to claims that he endorsed Ahmed Tinubu, the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), for the president in 2023.

Mr Ibu stated he was at the gathering where Tinubu was sponsored in a video posted to his Instagram page.

He clarified that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, not Tinubu, will be his presidential candidate if he decides to run in 2023.

According to the actor, Atiku has previously aided him greatly, and he had no intention of abandoning him in favor of another candidate.

“People approached me about Tinubu’s role in the presidential election in Nigeria,” he added. “I’m a completely independent person, and everything that has to do with anything publicly should be addressed to me.” I’m not sure why this item is spinning like this.

“I’ve never run in the opposite direction; it’s always been me and Atiku who have aided me in so many ways, and if he runs for president, Atiku will undoubtedly be my candidate.”

“I wouldn’t abandon Atiku since he’s like a father to me; I’ve worked for him even in his own State.” I’m not trying to discredit Tinubu, but he’s not my candidate; Atiku is.

Foluke Daramola-Salako, a Nollywood actress, has reacted to backlash directed at her and a colleague for singing Tinubu’s praise in a viral video.

Nollywood stars Foluke Daramola and Mr Ibu chanted “Asiwaju Bola Tinubu” in the viral video.

Nigerians were offended, and the celebrities in the video were booed.

They were accused by critics of collecting bribes to support Tinubu.

Foluke responded by saying she was not paid to promote any candidate and that she and her colleagues were at the event to advocate for peace in the country.

The event, she claims, had nothing to do with politics or backing Tinubu’s presidential bid in 2023.

Despite being a card-carrying member of the APC, the 43-year-old actress stated she has yet to endorse anyone.

“I need to set the record straight, I never support anyone, please don’t get things misconstrued,” the actress stated in a video posted to her Instagram page.

“What we did yesterday had nothing to do with politics; we are part of a group campaigning for Nigerian peace and togetherness.”

As part of its attempts to combat a novel coronavirus type, Israel approved banning foreign nationals from entering the country and the deployment of contentious technologies for contact tracing on Sunday.

“The country’s coronavirus cabinet has adopted a series of actions, including red-listing travel to 50 African countries, barring entry by foreigners, and demanding quarantine for all Israelis traveling from abroad,” the Health Ministry stated in a statement.

“It also allowed the controversial phone tracking technique used by the Shin Bet internal security agency to track down people infected with the novel omicron type of coronavirus in Israel.”

The use of cellphone surveillance equipment was criticized by Israeli rights groups as a violation of privacy rights, and the Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that its usage be limited.

Dr. Ran Balicer, the head of the government’s COVID-19 advisory body, told Israel’s Kan public radio that the extra precautions were required due to the fog of war that surrounded the new variation, and that it was better to act early and strictly to prevent its spread.

Israel announced on Saturday that the new strain had been discovered in a tourist returning from Malawi, and that it was examining seven more potential cases. Three of the seven people were vaccinated, and they were all placed in isolation.

In South Africa, scientists have discovered a novel coronavirus type that is causing alarm due to its large number of mutations and quick transmission, according to scientists.

Since the commencement of the epidemic, Israel, a country with a population of 9.3 million people, has reported at least 8,184 deaths due to coronavirus. More than 6.3 million Israelis have received at least one dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, and more than 4 million have received a booster.

EFCC: Fani-Kayode insists no regrets after joining APC

0

Femi Fani-Kayode has stated that he is a proud member of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, and that he has no regrets about his decision.

Fani-Kayode had abandoned the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party a few months ago and switched to the APC, a party he had criticized throughout its existence.

Fani-Kayode was one of the public people who took it upon themselves to criticize President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration and the All Progressives Congress (APC) at every turn.

Following his defection to the ruling party, the anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, purportedly arrested him, prompting widespread mockery from Nigerians, with some labeling him a traitor.

Two people who arrived from southern Africa over the weekend tested positive for the Omicron coronavirus type on Sunday, according to Australia.

Both passengers arrived in Sydney on Saturday evening and tested positive for COVID-19 late that night, according to the New South Wales health department.

Over the weekend, Australia joined the United Kingdom, Germany, and Italy in finding Omicron cases, while more countries enforced travel restrictions from southern Africa.

NSW Health stated, “Both people were asymptomatic, completely vaccinated, and in quarantine.”

“An additional 12 passengers from Southern Africa were placed in a 14-day hotel quarantine, while 260 other passengers and crew members were ordered to isolate.”

The health agency stated, “Close contacts will be called on a regular basis, and compliance checks will be conducted.”

On Saturday, Australia put further restrictions on persons who had visited nine southern African countries, as the highly contagious variety raises fears of a new pandemic wave.

South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho, Eswatini, the Seychelles, Malawi, and Mozambique are the countries involved.
