Breaking: Boko Haram terrorists launch a new attack on a Borno community, forcing residents to flee

0

Boko Haram militants from the Islamic State-backed Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), formerly known as Jam’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da’wah wa’l-Jihd, are currently attacking Auno, a village in Borno State’s Konduga Local Government Area.

According to early reports, insurgents stormed the community early Monday morning, firing heavy artillery.

According to a soldier, the situation forced people to flee for their lives and remain indoors as the shooting continued.

He went on to say that the troops defeated the terrorists in a gunfight and forced them to flee.

“It’s unclear whether there have been any casualties.” “I can’t say if anyone else was kidnapped; it was an attack on commuters using the community’s highway,” the source said.

ISWAP has been consolidating its grip in areas around Lake Chad since the death of JAS leader Abubakar Shekau.

Wali Sani Shuwaram, 45, was recently appointed as the new Leader (Wali) of ISWAP in Lake Chad.

Hundreds of Boko Haram fighters have defected to Shekau, increasing the sect’s membership.

The Nigerian army has repeatedly claimed that the insurgency has been largely defeated, and any losses are frequently downplayed.

The terror group has killed over 50,000 people and displaced millions of others, primarily in the states of Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe.

AMCON ‘Special Animal’ was created by govt to deal with specific problem, Says Justice Dimgba

At the weekend, Justice Nnamdi Dimgba of the Federal High Court Awka Division spoke out strongly in support of the federal government, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Federal Ministry of Finance, and the National Assembly for establishing the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) and giving it special powers to recover its troublesome bad debts.

Dimgba remarked this, according to a statement, while speaking to participants at a Legal Academy interactive session for Land Registry Officials and Corporate Affairs Commission officials.

As a ‘bad bank,’ AMCON now has a huge outstanding debt of over N4.4 trillion owed to them by a few individuals who wrecked a number of financial institutions by taking out large loans with no intention of repaying them.

As a result, when AMCON was founded in 2010, the problematic loans were sold to it. AMCON recapitalized a large number of the afflicted financial institutions and stabilised the financial sector after taking over the bad debts. Following that, AMCON’s mandate is to pursue the debtors in order to recover the loan.

Apart from the banks, other sectors of the Nigerian economy were affected, including oil and gas industries, manufacturing companies, airlines, real estate and construction companies, marine companies and power generation companies, and insurance companies, to name a few.

“However, as AMCON steps up its efforts to collect the massive outstanding obligations, these obligors have honed the art of hiding behind various technical flaws in the AMCON Act in order to thwart collection.”

“On the other hand, the federal government, through the National Assembly, is planning forward and has made certain revisions to the Act establishing AMCON, giving AMCON some extra authorities that will speed up their recovery task.”

“Only recently, President Buhari signed the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (Amendment) Act, which amends the AMCON Act No.4, 2010, into law for the second time.

“Among other things, the AMCON Act extends the tenor of the Resolution Cost Fund (RCF) and grants access to the Special Tribunal established by the Banks and other Financial Institutions Act 2020, which gives AMCON the authority to… “take possession, manage, foreclose or sell, transfer, assign or otherwise deal with the asset or property used as security for Eligible Bank Assets (EBAs), and related matters,” according to the statement.

This most recent trend has also drawn criticism, particularly from obligors and those sympathetic to them. President Muhammadu Buhari, the National Assembly, the federal Ministry of Finance, AMCON, and the central bank were all on Dimgba’s side.

He stated that they must do all possible within the law to ensure that the individuals in possession of Nigeria’s collective commonwealth restore them to the government through AMCON.

According to him, the only way to compel payback is to support AMCON, which is what those who formed the agency are doing and have done with the newest revision to the AMCON Act.

“Because AMCON is a ‘Particular Animal’ created by the federal government of Nigeria to cope with special problems in the country, which began with the global financial catastrophe that affected many countries around the world, including Nigeria,” the legal luminary stated.

Earlier in his presentation, AMCON’s Executive Director, Operations, Mr. Aminu Ismail, who spoke on behalf of the corporation’s MD/CEO, Mr. Ahmed Kuru AMCON, reminded participants that the AMCON mandate remains a national assignment that requires participation from all government departments.

AMCON’s entire current exposure on all Eligible Bank Assets (EBAs) is currently N4.4 trillion, he said, indicating that high-level coordination was required. Only 350 outstanding obligors account for 83% of the overall EBA balance, and 244 of the top 350 obligors are awaiting judgement in various courts. The collateral coverage, on the other hand, is only 16% of the entire current exposure.

Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Kwayakusar Local Government commissioned a freshly built mega-sized Government Day Technical Secondary School in Wuyo, Bayo Local Government Area. In the same LGA, he also commissioned three more projects.

“My administration seeks to foster the mix of learning and vocational training, to enable pupils to gain entrepreneurship skills,” Zulum remarked while at the Day Technical Secondary Schools.

Following the commissioning, the Governor distributed 300 bicycles to students from surrounding communities to help with mobility.

Aside from the day school, Zulum, also in Bayo LGA, commissioned two new Distinct Heads palaces in Biryel and Wuyo, the LGA’s second and third projects, respectively.

The palaces, he said, will help civil agencies operate more efficiently.

Zulum also ordered that mosques be built for both palaces by the minister of religious affairs.

Governor Zulum commissioned five projects in the Hawul local government.

The State Government restored and built two-story blocks of classrooms for the commissioning of one of the five projects, a secondary school owned by community members in Sakwa East, and Governor Zulum also gave N10 million.

The grant, according to the Governor, is for community members to operate the school’s day-to-day operations, which are funded by the community.

Zulum also built Kinging Central Primary School, which serves a Hawul village.

Later, the Governor dedicated freshly constructed classrooms in Yimirshika, as well as school uniforms, textbooks, and 300 bicycles to kids who walk miles to villages.

In Kukurupu, a hamlet in Hawul Local Government, adjacent Adamawa State, Zulum also inaugurated a Comprehensive Primary Healthcare Center and a new primary school.

The governor also marked off the registration of 500 students and presented textbooks, uniforms, and bicycles to Kukurupu Primary School.

Four oil workers were killed by gunmen suspected of being pirates while working on pipeline maintenance for the Nigerian Agip Oil Company.

The suspected pirates ambushed their unsuspecting victims in Okoroma and Ogbokiri-Akassa communities of Nembe and Brass Local Government areas of Bayelsa, according to a spokesman for the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps.

Two workers, a driver, and a security operative were killed at a facility in Nembe, Bayelsa state, which feeds oil and gas to the Brass export terminal, according to an NSCDC spokesman.

“Some gunmen attacked some contract workers doing some repair work at the Nembe axis of Obama flow station yesterday, killing two contract workers and a driver,” NSDC spokesman Ogbere said on Sunday.

He went on to say that one of his men was also killed, and that two others were injured and are being treated. “One of the missing personnel was killed, while the other two were found and are responding to treatment,” he said.

According to NAN, the Agip oil workers and security personnel were attacked around 6 a.m., when six oil workers allegedly doing maintenance work near their platform were kidnapped and taken away.

The Nembe community is currently the source of Nigeria’s recent oil spill, which occurred on November 5th, when the Federal Government ordered AITEO Eastern Exploration and Production Company Ltd (AEEPCo) to stop operations in the Nembe oil spill area of Bayelsa State until a proper investigation is conducted.

An ode to General Ibrahim on Unijos honour

0

By Toby Prince

Unpretentiously, commitment and hard work in public service pays handsomely. Feasts of garlards brighten up your day from unexpected quarters. It confers on the recipient, more sense of responsibility and the patriotic feeling of self fulfilment to really hear resonations of eulogies vibrate everywhere.

The honouree is usually excited because humanity has found a breather through him and society covertly and overtly appreciates his sacrifices. There is nothing more profoundly enduring like contributing to the elevation and development of one’s country. Nation- building is a task for everyone, and obligatory to perform in everyone’s small space.

This is the proud and enviably recognized posture of the Director General, National Youth Service Corps ( DG- NYSC), Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim. Sentiments apart, Gen. Ibrahim is a loveable personality, not only by his innately gifted bundle of talents, but his rare capacity to utilize it for public benefits of mankind.

Someone once described Gen. Ibrahim as a soldier of the finest breed, an intellectual/ academic don, classic administrator, innovator, reformer, goalgetter and an amazing pacesetter. Nigerians have attestably encountered Gen. Ibrahim in these neons in the various military establishments where he has served. Now, as DG- NYSC, Gen. Ibrahim has marketed himself in spellbinding excellence on the job.

Therefore, a few days back, at an event, his alma mater, the University of Jos (UNIJOS) Alumni Association feted this crack military officer, with an award of excellence in Abuja. The association accurately assessed and endorsed the decision in recognition of Ibrahim’s tremendous achievements as the 18th DG- NYSC in barely two years on the saddle.

The plethora of ecomia on the NYSC boss yawned loudly with the exceptionally positive feats and accomplishments of Gen. Ibrahim as head of the scheme. It is palpable that his choice for the award was not a mistake.

Of grippling relevance, the Chairman, Unijos Alumni, Abuja Chapter, Mr. Joseph Chukwu uttered something unique about the persona of Gen. Ibrahim as the alumni association mulled with the idea of an award to him, a man of solid credentials and unbeatable records of performance anywhere. Chukwu exclaimed to the audience that Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim’s name came topmost and got thundering ovations when he was nominated for the award.

Its difficult for Nigerians in any congregation to collectively agree and endorse anyone for honor without some protest voices. But Ibrahim broke the jinx in an association comprising professionals of different ilk, ideological persuasions and creeds. This general acceptability in itself is the first big plus and loud testimony of his credible performance in public service.

Did the University of Jos (UNIJOS) Alumni Association actually make a mistake by conferring on Gen. Ibrahim the prestigious award of excellence and a good ambassador of the varsity? Has Ibrahim really lived up to public expectations in his assignment as NYSC boss by repositioning the scheme to the status of a focal catalyst in the overall quest of Nigeria’s national development?

The answers are handy from an independent inquest of Gen. Ibrahim’s leadership of the NYSC scheme. Its needless to trumpet that Gen. Ibrahim met an NYSC scheme which was grossly underutilised, with potentials of serving corps members largely unexplored!

But he dexteriously turned around the fortunes of the scheme and changed dormant narratives to now a vibrant and beneficial scheme for serving corps members and their post – service years. Even public perception of the scheme has positively changed. Gen. Ibrahim has also excitingly laid the path of achieving finanacial independence for the scheme which will assume full effect in the nearest future. He is already partially successful in this regard.

Therefore, Ibrahim has upgraded the existing NYSC’s Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneural Development programme ( SAED) and ensured the one month training in different vocations impact on the quest for more knowledge on all corps members. Some of them actually begin to utilize such skills in their places of Primary Assignment ( PA).

And thinking out of the box, Gen. Ibrahim has gone ahead to partner with multiple financial institutions to empower corps members with start-up capitals towards self- reliance through personal investments in the post- service years. Today, Nigeria is a nation, where some corps members have become employers of labor after the mandatory service year because of the skills through SAED and the financial backing of some institutions partnering with NYSC to finance their business proposals. The Central Bank of Nigera (CBN), Bank of Industry (BOI), Heritage Bank, (HB) and Access Bank among others can attest to it. These benefits are a product of Gen. Ibrahim’s leadership ingenuity.

Furthermore, the NYSC boss has accepted, adopted and is implementing President Muhammadu Buhari’s policy and initiatives on agriculture and food security. Similarly, the NYSC under Ibrahim’s guidiance has also partnered agric-based institutions and other organisations to sponsor training of serving corps members in farming techniques, cropping and mechanized agriculture.

Today, the previously moribund NYSC farms across the federation have come up alive and new farm plantations have sprouted. NYSC alone has cultivated over 60, 000 hectares of rice fields as at 2021. The harvested rice is processed for consumption in the scheme’s owned ricemills and the investments are still being consolidated. Undoubtedly, this is an enormous contribution of corps members to food availability in the country .

The NYSC boss is not resting on his oars. Gen. Ibrahim has revitalised NYSC investment ventures across the country, such as garment, bread and table water factories, which are functioning at maximum productivity. They also double as
training avenues for serving corps members.

Its shocking and indeed novel that the NYSC under Gen. Ibrahim has started to generate and remit revenues from these investments into into the federation account. In 2020, the NYSC paid N280 million into FGN coffers and in 2021, a sumptuous sum of over N.5 billion was remitted, with plans to keep increasing its revenue generation.

And the big bang! Gen. Ibrahim has conceptualised and vigorously pursuing the establishment of the NYSC Trust Fund. He is working towards the future. Sensitization campaigns on this initiative have gone virile and received favorable endorsements from a wide spectrum of Nigerians.

When the NYSC Trust Fund comes into fruition, it will provide a wider range of corps members more access to start-up captals to finance their private business ideas as they blissfully exit the year of service to fatherland. The expected impacts of these laudable initiatives in the nearest future are truely tremendous! Gen. Ibrahim truely deserves more than the award of excellence from Unijos alumni, but a national honour.

Nigerians warn the Federal Government not to overburden us with fuel subsidies

0

More reactions emerged yesterday, condemning the Federal Government’s plan to remove petroleum subsidies and replace them with a N5,000 transportation subsidy for 40 million Nigerians, as announced last week. Bishop Francis Wale Oke, President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), warned the government against exacerbating people’s problems by removing subsidies.

Oke, who is also the presiding Bishop of The Sword of the Spirit Ministries, issued a statement through his media office warning that the implementation of such policy would exacerbate the hardships that citizens are already facing.

The cleric bemoaned the fact that prices of consumables and other items were rising out of reach of the people, warning that removing the proposed subsidy would exacerbate the country’s hardship.

“An increase in the price of gasoline from its current N165 to N340 per litre can cause tension and crises in the country, which can paralyze our economy if not handled with extreme caution,” he said.

“Everyone will feel it, especially the less fortunate.” The negative consequences will undoubtedly outweigh the benefits. The cost of transportation for people and goods across the country will skyrocket, as will the cost of other things connected, causing a spiral effect on the population’s overall living standard; the suffering will be multi-dimensional. Please make all stakeholders aware of this avoidable path and take the necessary steps.”

He lamented that the situation had deteriorated due to a decrease in Nigerians’ purchasing power as a result of the country’s currency’s continuous depreciation on the exchange market.

As a result, he urged the government to do everything possible to revive the country’s four ailing refineries, with the goal of ensuring that they operate at peak efficiency for the country’s and people’s long-term benefit.
Dr. Samson Ayokunle, the National President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), also urged the Federal Government to engage stakeholders before withdrawing the subsidy.

He stated this at the retirement service of CAN National Vice President Rev. (Dr.) Caleb Ahima, who stepped down as President of the Christian Reform Church of Nigeria (CRC-N) at the church’s headquarters in Taraba State, yesterday.

“The government needs to engage labor and other stakeholders,” Ayokunle said. We all know how much food costs in the market, and we all know that there is no raise in pay, so a lot of people may struggle to make ends meet.”

In a similar vein, the Anglican Communion’s Enugu Ecclesiastical Province has rejected the government’s proposal to completely eliminate fuel subsidies and pay N5,000 palliative payments to 40 million Nigerians. The church called the government proposal a disgrace to Nigerian sensibilities and asked President Muhammadu Buhari to drop the idea.

The church also stated that due to hyperinflation, the value of the naira has become more or less useless, noting that even the Federal Government’s introduction of e-naira will not be able to save the devalued currency.

Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Chukwuma, Archbishop of Enugu Province, stated this during a media briefing to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Enugu Diocese from the Diocese of Niger in 1970.

Chukwuma said the outbreak of Coronavirus prevented the Diocese from celebrating its 50th anniversary last year, despite the fact that it had continued to grow spiritually and in terms of infrastructure. He urged state governments to return Anglican schools that the government had taken over to the Catholic Church in the same way that the Catholic Church had returned mission schools to the Catholic Church in states like Enugu.

The Catholic Church’s Knights of St. Mulumba of Nigeria have urged the Federal Government to postpone its plan to completely eliminate subsidies for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) next year so that the country does not descend into chaos. According to the Knights, the country has already experienced enough insecurity, hunger, and unemployment in recent years, so subsidy removal should be the absolute last resort.

At the 42nd Supreme Council Convention in Asaba, Delta State, yesterday, their leader, Sir Diamond Ovueraye, supported by his Secretary, Sir Prof. Fabian Obi, and six others, said the removal will further dwindle the nation’s economy and multiply hunger among citizens.

Overall, the government should do the right thing by “fixing our refineries and building more in such a way that instead of importing fuel, we can generate enough to sell across the border to other countries to generate more foreign revenue,” according to the report.

Meanwhile, the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) has chastised labor union leaders, including the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), for taking a timid stance against the government’s bad economic policies. The group promised to lead an anti-fuel subsidy protest, accusing labor leaders of representing their own personal interests rather than those of workers and citizens.

In a statement issued yesterday by its Secretary-General, Chief Willy Ezugwu, the CNPP said it was ready to lead the anti-subsidy fight, emphasizing that Nigerians must be willing to take control of their own destiny.

“What the government wants to do is fuel price increment, not subsidy removal,” Ezwugu said, accusing the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and the Federal Government of being deceitful in implementing the subsidy regime.

“It is disheartening that the labour unions have joined the APC-led government in its deceitful and manipulative tendencies,” he said.

“Before winning the election in 2015, the APC convinced Nigerians that fuel subsidies did not exist and that they were a scam. However, as soon as they won the election, the government increased the price of gasoline at the pump.

“In May 2016, the Federal Government announced that the fuel subsidy had been removed and that petrol would now cost N145 per litre. In fact, the NNPC misled Nigerians into believing that marketers were free to bring in fuel cargoes and sell them as long as they met quality standards.

“However, in keeping with the government’s deceptive nature, the NNPC insisted on a benchmark of N145 per litre as a recommended pump price. If you’re sincere, do you remove subsidies while also dictating or suggesting prices?

“This cycle of deception has continued to this day, as the government has hinted at yet another fuel price hike, which it has once again dubbed the removal of fuel subsidies. How many times is the government going to cut fuel subsidies?

“The same labor union leaders who were involved in the earlier negotiations are now negotiating with the Federal Government in another round of personal enrichment, while Nigerians are expected to pay N340 per litre of petrol at a time when cooking gas is already out of reach of the average citizen.”

“It’s laughable that the Federal Government’s only consolation is a cash transfer of N5,000 to a few Nigerians, which government officials will inevitably siphon into private pockets like the COVID-19 conditional cash transfer.”

“The CNPP stands ready to lead Nigerians whenever they want to put an end to the government’s subsidy removal deception in collusion with labor leaders,” the statement continued.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has also rejected a proposal to eliminate fuel subsidies entirely and compensate 40 million Nigerians with a palliative payment of N5,000 each.

The group urged Nigerians to oppose any plan to raise pump prices further, claiming that doing so would result in an astronomical increase in the cost of goods and services, with a knock-on effect on Nigerian children’s education.

The government used the promise of 5,000 palliatives to deceive uneducated Nigerians into accepting the removal of fuel subsidies, according to ASUU President Prof. Victor Emmanuel Osodeke, who revealed this in an interview with The Guardian.

“Nigerians should not accept the removal of fuel subsidies,” he said. The fear is that only a few, if any, people will be paid at the end of the day.

“The so-called fuel subsidy serves only to enrich a small number of people.” How will these 40 million Nigerians be identified? Has the so-called 774,000 people they promised jobs to materialized after more than two years?” Osodeke inquired.

He insisted that if Nigeria could afford to subsidize petrol at the pump for N2.4 trillion, what was stopping it from investing half of that amount in refineries?

“What the government should do is sit down with academics and build refineries,” says the author. We don’t need foreign investors to build refineries in our country. We can get engineers from our universities to help build refineries at a low cost to Nigerians, and that is the way to go.

“The Niger Republic no longer imports fuel; instead, it refines its own and even supplies some parts of Nigeria.” Does it seem reasonable that, despite our country’s expertise, we continue to import fuel?”

He went on to say that the education sector is already in crisis, and that rising fuel prices will have an impact on transportation costs.

“How will a man’s children go to school if he earns N30,000 per month?” How will a teacher with a monthly salary of N15,000 feed his family? These are the issues that we should be thinking about as a country,” he said.

World Health Organization advises people to get vaccinated as soon as possible

Due to its large number of mutations and possible faster rate of infection, the latest Covid-19 variant discovered in South Africa has been given the Greek name ‘Omicron’ and labeled as a variant of concern by UN health agency experts.

Preliminary evidence also suggests that this strain of concern has a higher risk of reinfection than other strains, such as Delta, according to the UN World Health Organization (WHO).

Currently, the number of cases appears to be rising in almost all of South Africa’s provinces.

According to the WHO, the variant has been detected at higher rates than in previous outbreaks, implying that it “may have a growth advantage.”

To better understand the variant, experts have asked countries to increase surveillance and genome sequencing efforts.

A number of studies are currently underway, and the agency’s technical advisory group, known as TAG-VE, will continue to assess this variant. New findings will be communicated to member states and the general public as needed.

Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO’s Covid-19 technical lead, said on Wednesday that information about the now-‘Omicron’ variant is still limited.

“We don’t know much about this because there are only about 100 whole genome sequences available.” “What we do know is that this variant has a lot of mutations, and the concern is that having a lot of mutations can affect how the virus behaves,” she said during a Twitter Q&A.

Researchers are currently trying to figure out where the mutations are and what they could mean for diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines, according to Dr. Van Kerkhove.

“It’ll take a few weeks for us to figure out what impact this variant has; there’s a lot of work going on right now,” she said.

People can do a lot to protect themselves from Covid, according to WHO officials, including continuing to wear masks and avoiding crowds.

“Everyone out there needs to understand that the more this virus circulates, the more chances it has to change, and the more mutations we’ll see,” Dr. Van Kerkhove said.

“Get vaccinated as soon as possible, make sure you get the full course of your doses and take steps to reduce your exposure and prevent yourself from spreading the virus to others,” she added.

Osinbajo inaugurates the Delta Secretariat and the IPP Project

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will open the multi-billion naira Delta State Secretariat Complex and the 8.5 Megawatt Independent Power Project (IPP) in Asaba on Tuesday.

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa made the announcement to the press on Sunday, shortly after inspecting the facility in advance of the inauguration.

He stated that the Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty, Professor Chike Edozien secretariat complex was completed and ready for inauguration.
According to the governor, the Secretariat complex, which spans 45,000 square meters, was built to house all of the ministries and their staff.

“The secretariat complex is completely finished and ready for the inauguration.”

“I went around checking the route for the Vice President’s inauguration tomorrow and am confident that we are prepared.”

“With the exception of the Ministry of Works, the secretariat is a very complex one, sitting on 45,000 square meters, which is quite large, and it’s designed to house all of the ministries and their staff.”

“It’s so interconnected with so many things that it has a banking hall, restaurants, a creche, and even a clinic that could act as a mini-hospital.”

The new secretariat is internet-enabled throughout and is powered by an Independent Power Plant, which also serves other government offices. That means we have power 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“We also have meeting rooms, and all of the ministries are linked.”

“A full facility manager is already in the works, with other sub managers in charge of security, cleanliness, and environmental sanitation.

The Governor also announced that the Vice President would inaugurate the 8.5 megawatt Independent Power Project in the state capital on the same day.
