Twenty-two people died this week in İstanbul out of 46 who were hospitalized after drinking a bad batch of bootleg alcohol, the İstanbul Governor’s Office announced on Friday.

The governor’s office said 16 people were still in the hospital, and 14 suspects had been arrested as part of 56 operations against bootleg alcohol producers between Nov. 16 and Dec. 16.

Because President Recep Tayyip Erdoan’s Islamic-rooted party opposes alcohol consumption, bootleg liquor production has increased as a result of steady increases in spirits taxes.

In the supermarket, rak, Turkey’s national beverage, costs around 250 Turkish lira ($16.5) per liter, or about a tenth of the monthly net minimum wage.

Instead of ethanol, which is usually used for human consumption, bootleg alcohol is sometimes mixed with methanol, a more toxic substance used by industry.

Police raids at 342 locations yielded over 30,000 liters (8,000 gallons) of counterfeit and bootleg alcohol, according to the Turkish Interior Ministry.

Toward the end of 2020, more than 40 people in Turkey died of alcohol poisoning in less than a week.

WHO added ninth COVID-19 vaccine to list of emergency vaccines

The World Health Organization (WHO) issued an emergency use listing (EUL) for NVX-CoV2373 on Friday, bringing the total number of WHO-validated vaccines against the SARS-CoV-2 virus to seven.

The vaccine, known as CovovaxTM, is manufactured by the Serum Institute of India under license from Novavax as part of the COVAX facility portfolio, providing a much-needed boost to ongoing efforts to vaccinate more people in low-income countries.

The EUL procedure, developed by the World Health Organization, evaluates the quality, safety, and efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines and is a requirement for COVAX vaccine supply. It also allows countries to expedite their own regulatory approval for COVID-19 vaccine import and administration.

“Vaccines remain one of the most effective tools for protecting people against serious illness and death from SARS-COV-2, even as new variants emerge,” said WHO Assistant-Director General for Access to Medicines and Health Products, Dr. Mariângela Simo. ‘This listing aims to increase access, particularly in low-income countries, where 41 countries have yet to vaccinate 10% of their populations, and 98 countries have yet to reach 40%.”

CovovaxTM was evaluated under the WHO EUL procedure, which included a review of the quality, safety, and efficacy data, a risk management plan, programmatic suitability, and inspections of manufacturing sites by the Drugs Controller General of India.

The WHO-convened Technical Advisory Group for Emergency Use Listing (TAG-EUL), made up of experts from around the world, has determined that the vaccine meets WHO standards for COVID-19 protection, that the vaccine’s benefits far outweigh any risks, and that the vaccine can be used globally.

Novavax and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations developed CovovaxTM, a component of the vaccine (CEPI). It is stable at 2 to 8 °C refrigerated temperatures and requires two doses. The vaccine is made using a novel platform in which an engineered baculovirus with a gene for a modified SARS-CoV-2 spike protein is created.

The European Medicines Agency is currently reviewing Novavax’s NuvaxovidTM, the company’s original product (EMA). Once the EMA has issued its recommendation, the WHO will complete its own evaluation of the vaccine.

The vaccine was also discussed at a meeting of WHO’s Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) this week. SAGE develops specific policies and recommendations for the use of vaccines in populations (e.g., recommended age groups, dose intervals, and specific groups such as pregnant and lactating women), and will issue recommendations for NuvaxovidTM/CovovaxTM in the coming days.

The World Health Organization has a list of emergency uses.

The emergency use listing (EUL) procedure determines whether new health products are suitable for use in public health emergencies. The goal is to make medicines, vaccines, and diagnostics available as quickly as possible to respond to emergencies while adhering to strict safety, efficacy, and quality criteria.

According to the WHO, the assessment considers the emergency’s threat as well as the benefit that would result from using the product, as well as any potential risks.

The EUL pathway entails a thorough review of late-stage phase II and phases III clinical trial data, as well as significant additional data on safety, efficacy, quality, and a risk management strategy.

These data are examined by independent experts and WHO teams, who take into account the current body of evidence on the vaccine in question, as well as plans for monitoring its use and future research.

As part of the EUL process, the vaccine manufacturer must commit to continuing to generate data in order for the vaccine to receive full licensure and WHO prequalification.

Additional clinical data generated from vaccine trials and deployment will be assessed on a rolling basis by the WHO prequalification process to ensure the vaccine meets the necessary quality, safety, and efficacy standards for broader availability.

He insisted that adequate security was essential for a successful election.

“Unless elections are held in a peaceful and secure environment, the integrity and even legitimacy of the election’s outcome will be called into question,” Jega says.

“As we look forward to the general elections in 2023, there is growing concern that the country’s pervasive insecurity will present a formidable obstacle, if not an obstruction, to those elections.”

Centre hails NEMA DG, says transparency and accountability should be emulated

The Centre for Human Rights Advancement in Africa (CHRAA) has applauded the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ahmed Mustapha Habib, for transforming the interventionist agency.

In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Tolulope Adebayo, the Centre said Habib has instilled accountability and transparency in the operations of NEMA.

According to Adebayo, the DG has displayed an uncommon zeal and courage in ensuring that relief materials to victims of disasters across the country are conducted most transparently.

He noted that Habib’s example at NEMA is worthy of commendation for calculated leadership with sincerity and purpose..

The group, therefore, saluted President Buhari’s choice of a well-rounded individual who shares the same passion with him in developing critical sectors of the Nigerian economy as director-general of NEMA.

Adebayo, however, called on all well-meaning Nigerians to extend support to the new NEMA boss towards achieving the overall mandate of coordinating resources towards efficient and effective disaster prevention, preparedness, mitigation and response in Nigeria.

Read full statement below:

The Centre for Human Rights Advancement in Africa, a non-governmental organization dedicated to the promotion of the ideals of democracy and good governance, is issuing this press statement given the recent transformation at the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA)

The operations of NEMA under the new management led by Ahmed Mustapha Habib have displayed an unalloyed commitment to repositioning the interventionist agency in a record few months since he assumed leadership.

It is instructive to note that the Centre for Human Rights Advancement in Africa sees the genuine efforts by Ahmed Mustapha Habib in the entrenchment of transparency and accountability in the operations of NEMA.

The reforms introduced so far are also noteworthy and indicative of an administration committed to fulfilling the critical mandate of the agency, which remains in the country’s best interest.

The Centre for Human Rights Advancement in Africa salutes the courage and leadership acumen of Ahmed Mustapha Habib in his few months as the director-general of NEMA. He has displayed an uncommon zeal and courage in ensuring that relief materials to victims of disasters across the country are conducted most transparently.

This is indeed a deviation from times past where the distribution of relief materials are marred with controversies and, in most instances, diverted to private warehouses at the detriment of those victims of disasters across the country.

This is indeed a commendable drive at NEMA. The Centre for Human Rights Advancement in Africa states that the likes of Ahmed Mustapha Habib are what the country needs at this critical point of our existence.

This is indeed a lesson in leadership that should be imbibed by all holding positions of authority in Nigeria. The task of making Nigeria great goes beyond rhetoric. Words should be matched with actions, and political office holders should see themselves as servants of the people whose survival depends on their actions and inactions in the conduct of government business.

The Ahmed Mustapha Habib example at NEMA is worthy of commendation for purposeful leadership with sincerity and purpose. A good example is the continuous tour of the various zones in the country and the efforts at constantly engaging stakeholders across the board towards making NEMA a responsive interventionist agency.

We also commend President Muhammadu Buhari in his choice of a well-rounded individual who shares the same passion with him in developing critical sectors of the Nigerian economy as director-general of NEMA.

The Centre for Human Rights Advancement in Africa is convinced beyond reasonable doubt that the operations of NEMA would experience tangible improvements in service delivery with the reforms introduced in the past few months.

We call on all well-meaning Nigerians to extend support to the new NEMA under Ahmed Mustapha Habib towards achieving the overall mandate of coordinating resources towards efficient and effective disaster prevention, preparedness, mitigation and response in Nigeria.
