0

President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, said Nigeria will continue to pursue peace and progress in Africa, and other parts of the world, by consistently pushing for justice, fairness and inclusiveness in global affairs.

In a sideline meeting with the Prime Minister of Palestine, Mohammad Shtayyeh, at the ongoing African Union meetings, President Buhari said the country remains unwavering in supporting democracy, development and good governance, particularly in ensuring the rights of individuals and institutions.

A statement issued by the Special Adviser to the president on Media and Publicity Chief Femi Adesina, quoted Buhari as saying, “As a country we are doing our best, and we will continue doing our best to ensure justice and fairness.”

The president assured the Palestinian leader that Nigeria will be “consistent” in pushing for peace and progress, while upholding the tenets of justice.

In his remarks, the Palestinian leader noted that the situation in the Middle East, particularly relations with Israel, had deteriorated over the years, adding that the world needs to know the facts.

Shtayyeh thanked President Buhari for his leadership role in the continent.

“Your Excellency, we thank you for your wisdom. We need it more now. Please continue to stay well and healthy, because we need your wisdom,” he said.

Wike: PDP Can Only Support Candidate That Will Unite Nigeria – 2023 Presidency

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, Rivers state governor Nyesom Wike, says, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will not give its presidential ticket to any candidate who will serve only the interest of the wealthy few in Nigeria.

The governor said some desperate politicians are already scheming for a candidate who will not serve the interest of the many, rather the interest of just those of the wealthy few.

Wike spoke on Saturday at a grand reception organised in his honour by the people of Kalabari ethnic nationality at the Abalama School field in Asari Toru Local Government Area on Saturday.

His word: “No amount of gang-up can make PDP give somebody who will want to run an election for the interest of some big men, and not for all Nigerians.

“Anybody who wants to be the candidate of PDP must be a candidate for the interest of Nigerians.”

He expressed concerns over the fact that some companies in the country continue to post annual financial profits regularly in a downing national economy to the detriment of the poor.

The governor said such profits, invariably, shared only by the rich, make them to get richer, while the majority of the population of the country, who are poor, gets poorer

He reiterated that the stakeholders in Southern will soon make a declarative statement concerning the 2023 presidential election.

“The day the South will speak, Nigeria will shake. We believe in the unity of this country, but nobody can threaten us. Nobody should threaten us. We believe in the unity of Nigeria and unity of Nigeria must continue,” he said.

Wike condemned Rivers politicians serving in President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration for their gross inability to attract federal government projects to the State.

Concerning the next governorship of Rivers state, the governor said everybody is entitled to aspire to be the next governor but such person must show capacity for that office and be well disposed to protect the interest of the State.

He told the Kalabari people, specifically, that they have not done well in terms of loving themselves and working in unity.

Governor Wike said it is only a united people who can speak with one voice that can stand up to make demands. He therefore urged them to put their house in order.

He announced the extension of the dateline of completion of the Trans Kalabari road phase one project by two months owing to the loss period when workmen were kidnapped on site; adding that if the finances of the state improved, his administration might award the phase of the Trans Kalabari road before he leaves office next year.

Governor Wike, while canceling the contract for the reconstruction of Kalabari National College due to foreseen politics, announced the release of more funds for the Maryhood Girls Secondary school in the area to speed up its completion.

In his welcome address, Chairman of Rivers state Elders Forum, Chief Ferdinand Anabraba explained that the grand reception is significant for two reasons; of its critical importance to them as a people and also because of the unity of purpose engendered among them under the Wike’s administration

He said it is that kind of reception organised for prominent sons and friends who have impacted the Kalabari people.

Chief Anabraba noted that Governor Wike has systematically fulfilled all promises made to them including those of development projects and the appointment of Kalabari people into his administration.

He listed some of the projects completed or ongoing to include the phase 1 of Trans-Kalabari road project other administration promises but failed to execute for over 17 years, the rehabilitation and equipping of zonal and general hospitals, secondary schools, Abonnema Ring road, sand filling in Obonoma, Abonnema and Bakan.

Youths Unveil Rescue Nigeria Mission For Yahaya Bello In Kano: 2023

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, Rescue Nigeria Mission, a movement mobilising for the emergence of Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State as Nigeria’s next President, has held a town hall meeting with women and youths in Kano.

The coordinator of the movement in Kano, Abdul Amat Maikwashewa, said the Kogi State Governor had contributed immensely to the development of youths in Nigeria by drawing them closer to his government and instituting people-oriented policies for their benefit.

Maikwashewa said members of the group came up with the idea of queueing behind Yahaya Bello as Presidential Candidate because “looking around, no one beats his record currently in Nigeria.”

“We had to go to him to plead with him to run because he is not part of the old order and he is a formidable youth through whom we can realise the yearning of youths to take over governance in Nigeria,” he said.

The Chief of Staff to the Kogi State Governor, Abdulkareem Jamiu, who was at the inauguration of the members on Saturday, said Nigeria needed to breathe fresh air in the interest of the country and Nigerians at large.

He urged the youths not to allow any unqualified and old politician seeking the elective post to determine the destiny of the younger generation who represent 70 per cent of the population.

Abdulkareem thanked the organisers for the confidence in Governor Bello and reiterated that he possessed the capacity and agility to end security and economic difficulties confronting the country.

He said if Bello could decimate the enormous challenges and restore sanity to Kogi State, there shouldn’t be any reason for doubting the Governor’s dexterity to put Nigeria in order.

“If Governor Bello can provide solutions to numerous challenges confronting Kogi State, we have no doubt that he can answer the questions of Nigeria. First of all, what is the problem of Kogi State? Kogi is the only state that borders 10 states, including FCT, making the state a mini Nigeria.

“Kogi used to be the nerve centre of security threat, that was before Governor Yahaya Bello took over the mantle of leadership. Okene my home local government used to house a bomb factory. The bombing of churches, mosques and public places was the order of the day as a result of Boko Haram and ISWA activities before this administration took over,” he said.

He added, “Kogi was the centre of communal clashes, a situation where one ethnic group dominated other minority groups. As a result, the state was simply a theatre of anarchy, conflict and unrest. That period, when you enter the state capital, Lokoja, it was like a graveyard because there was no electricity, no development and sources of livelihood.”

“When the Governor took over, we engaged the services of the security with support from local vigilante groups to restore peace in the state. We no longer have bombing factory, the issue of marginalization has gone forever. Communal clash is over and peace reigns supreme in Kogi. Thank God for the purposeful leadership of Governor Yahaya Bello,” Jamiu noted.

Similarly, he said the Board had succeeded in arresting miscreants engaging in prostitution, drug pushing and other unlawful acts at Panshekara.

Ibn Sina said the young men and women were arrested after receiving complaints from residents of the area.

He decried over rising cases of underage youth engaged in societal vices that often lead to criminal activities.

The Commander General charged citizens of the state to be more vigilant and report any suspected person or character to relevant authorities.

He reaffirmed the board’s readiness to partner with relevant stakeholders in eradicating all forms of vices in the state.

Niger Delta Group Vows To Mobilise Youths For Protest Over NDDC Board

Agroup, Project Niger Delta, has vowed to mobilise youths across the region to protest the continued delay in the inauguration of the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission.

The group made this known in an open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari and signed by its Executive Director and Coordinator, Comrade Princewill Ebebi.

The letter, which was also copied to the Senate and House of Representatives Committee Chairmen on NDDC, reads in part, “Mr President should promptly call the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio, to order and give him a matching order to set up modalities to inaugurate the NDDC board.

“As its stands, it is only Akwa Ibom State where the minister and interim administrator hail from that is benefiting from the NDDC while other states are mere spectators in the affairs of the commission.

“We therefore, unequivocally state that we shall mobilise youths across Niger Delta states against the minister and interim administrator and we shall shutdown all NDDC offices across the nine Niger Delta states.

“This is our common resolve as youths in the Niger Delta region, we shall resist any attempt to intimidate or obstruct our protest if the board is not inauguration immediately.

“It is regrettable that a major institution established by law to tackle the development challenges of the Niger Delta region has been rendered redundant with the continued delayed in the inauguration of a substantive board as stipulated in the Act setting up the commission.

“It is sad that since you came on board, the management and running of the commission have been vested in the hands of acting managing director, interim administrator, and now sole administrator, in flagrant disregard to the Act setting up the commission and therefore denying the component states the opportunity to have representatives in the board.

“This has not only dragged the region backwards but is causing serious unrest, agitations, and indignation amongst the people of the Niger Delta Region.

“We have further noted with chagrin the manipulative antics and demonic influence of the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, in the continued delayed in the inauguration of the NDDC board. In the light of this, we wish to intimate Your Excellency that our people are running out of patience.”

PDP Accuses APC Of Plotting To Disrupt Council Elections In Abuja

0

The Federal Capital Territory Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has alleged that there are plots by the All Progressives Congress to disrupt the council elections in the city.
The opposition party alleged that the APC had planned to make use of fake security agents to arrest some of its members ahead of the local government elections scheduled for February 12.

This was contained in a statement by chairman of the PDP in the area, Sunday D. Zaka.
The party also accused the APC of planning to mobilise thugs from Nasarawa Toto, Gadabuike and other neighbouring towns of Kogi and Niger states ahead of the elections with the aim to disrupt the area council elections.
The party called on President Muhammadu Buhari and the international community to prevail on APC and call the party to order.
The statement reads, “It has become necessary that we call this urgent meeting. Our aim is to support the system by what we are doing right now and also deepen the shores of democracy in our nation.
“However, in the build up to next Saturday the 12th February, 2022 local government elections in the FCT, our intelligence network have reported some appalling findings and we have deemed it fit as a law abiding and democratic party to notify the general public and as well as the international community concerning the elections.
“There is an underground plan to use fake security agents to arrest and detain prominent members and stakeholder of our party ahead of the February 12 elections.
“We are not taking this likely because the same scheme was deployed in the last 2019 election but failed due to the display of professionalism by the heads of security operatives in the FCT and now this same satanic plan by the opposition is resurfacing, but we believe strongly it will fail again.”
The party called on all security formations in the FCT and those that would be deployed for the purpose of the election not to allow the desperation and gimmicks of APC ruin the relative peace and security in the FCT.
“It baffles us as a party that the national ruing All Progressives Congress has drafted a list of governors from states across Nigeria for an ordinary local government elections that is meant for the grassroots citizens and we are asking what motive could be behind the APC importing some of these governors with questionable character and knowledge of electoral violence to supervise the FCT Area Council election.
“In as much as we have confidence in the electoral umpire under the leadership of Prof Mahmoud Yakubu, we are concerned that the importation of questionable character by APC could have sinister motive against the elections. meaning the APC party is out to cause intimidation of voters.

“We want to say the essence of elections is to allow the will of the people prevail against all odds. Let anybody who has interest in leading the people seize the ballot opportunity and lead the people and not result in clandestine strategies in an attempt to subvert a democratic process.
“But because we know the APC has lost touch with the people at the grassroots and would be rejected at the poll hence their desperate plot to deploy the measures of subverting the process and win at all cost but the people of the FCT are resolute to come out in their numbers to vote for PDP and defend their votes,” the statement added.

Former APC Rep members criticize party’s lack of internal democracy

Former members of the All Progressive Congress’s House of Representatives have criticized the party’s lack of internal democracy as a major threat to the party’s success.

The forum urged delegates to the next national convention to nominate only renowned, reliable, and trusted party leaders to the National Working Committee (NWC) in order to propel the party to victory in the general elections in 2023.

In a communique issued at the end of a meeting in Abuja, Ibrahim Zailani, the forum’s Protem Chairman, exhorted the ruling party’s highest echelon to uphold all democratic fundamentals in the national interest.

Zailani said, “It is in the progressive interest of the party to ensure that internal democracy reigns supreme.”

The meeting reviewed the current state of the APC and called on the Caretaker/ Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee to ensure that internal democracy is sustained in the party.

Impeachment proceedings against Deputy Governor are recipe for crisis, PDP warns Matawalle.

0

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has warned Zamfara State Governor Bello Matawalle over the State House of Assembly’s alleged undemocratic impeachment of the state’s Deputy Governor, Mahdi Aliyu Mohammed Gusau.

Governor Matawalle’s frantic move, according to the opposition party, is prompted by his understanding that the PDP mandate he allegedly handed to the APC is about to be recovered through legal processes and restored to the Deputy Governor.

Matawalle allegedly violated the requirements of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) by “rashly shifting to the APC when there is no division in the party,” according to the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba.

He added that “the illegal process of impeachment despite a subsisting order of the Federal High Court, Abuja in suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/ 650/2021 portends grave implication for peace and security not only in Zamfara State but the entire North West region as well as the continued sustenance of democracy in our country.

“Governor Matawalle should note that the people of Zamfara State are solidly behind the Deputy Governor, who enjoys large political following in the State as the custodian of the PDP mandate after Matawalle’s infamous defection to the APC. As such, any action against the Deputy Governor amounts to a direct assault on the will of the people which they will firmly resist, it added.

It also warned that any attempt to strip the Deputy Governor of the mandate of the people on the grounds of unfounded allegations is a recipe for a serious crisis that can result in the complete breakdown of law and order in the state.

PDP cautioned the Zamfara State House of Assembly not to allow itself be pitched against the people, adding that “Governor Matawalle must know that the people of Zamfara State cannot allow his frustration and ego to be exchanged for their mandate which is now embodied in the Deputy Governor.

The opposition party called on the Inspector General of Police to note “how Governor Matawalle, out of frustration has constituted himself into a security threat in Zamfara State and the entire North West region, where he is now threatening the lives of members of the PDP and other well-meaning citizens of Zamfara State.

It alerted Nigerians of how Governor Matawalle has allegedly been hounding members of the Zamfara State Working Committee of the PDP particularly, our State Deputy Chairman, Prof. Kabiru Jabaka, who has been forced to relocate out of the State over threats to his life.

PDP urged President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC to immediately call Governor Matawalle to order.

Voke Ubuara, the Delta State Public Relations Officer for the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, expressed regret over the event.

He claimed that criminals in the town had found it impossible to use the waterways under Asikolo’s jurisdiction for the previous six to seven years.

“Before, when criminals operate in the town, the waterway was an easy escape route, but Asikolo when he assumed office became a stumbling block to that arrangement.

“We will partner with the police to see how we can fish out his killers,” he added.

Nollywood movies aren’t to blame for the rise in ritual killings, says Fidelis Duker

0

In a recent interview, popular Nollywood actor Fidelis Duker stated that the Nigerian film industry is not to blame for the recent increase in ritual killings in the country.
It was previously said that young Nigerians learned the act from movies depicting ritual scenes.
The most recent incidence involved four adolescents in Ogun beheading a girl named Sofiat for a money ritual.
In an interview with Saturday Beats, Duker, who is also the Executive Director of the Abuja International Film Festival, said that young Nigerians immersed in ritual don’t watch those kinds of films.

“I think to a considerable extent, I differ,” he added. In recent years, the generation of Nigerians who have been participating in ritual killings has been between the ages of 17 and 26.

Most of them did not watch those kinds of films. Most of the ritual films were produced about 10 and 15 years ago. What I am saying in essence is that Nollywood films cannot be blamed for the increase in ritual killings in the country. In films, even those who engaged in ritual killings usually ended up paying the price for it.

“In a recent Facebook post, I said one of the causes is that we have lost our moral values.

“A child of 17 years old would bring a new car home and the mother would be celebrating it. What work has he done at 17? A girl in year one in a tertiary institution would be using an iPhone of about N500,000, and one begins to wonder where she got the money from? Those are the issues we should look at. We should not look for an escape route and blame Nollywood films (for all these ills).”
