Asset recovery drive: Group backs AGF Malami

The Coalition for Human Rights and Rule of Law, on Thursday, threw its weight behind the assets recovery drive of the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN).

The AGF had been in the media recently over an alleged award of “a multi billion naira assets recovery contract to a company and its lawyers secretly”.

But the Coalition, in a statement signed by its President, Gabriel Agibi and made available to newsmen on Thursday, said the media report was being orchestrated by enemies of the Minister who are ” agents of corruption” that did not want the Federal Government to recover assets.

“The consistency of the attacks indicates a sinister motive to cause a submission to the whims and caprices of a select few who are bent on subverting the judicial process in Nigeria in ways too numerous to mention.

“As stakeholders in the justice sector, we are tempted to believe that the stance of the AGF with regards to assets recovery has not gone down well with some individuals hence the puerile attempt at blackmail and intimidation”, the group alleged.

The Coalition said it was aware that the asset recovery drive of the Federal Government had indeed “ruffled some feathers”, hence the target of the AGF, whose responsibility it was to ensure the successful implementation of the asset recovery drive.

“The coalition of human rights and the rule of law is issuing this press statement in light of the well-orchestrated campaign of calumny ostensibly launched by agents of corruption to misrepresent the attorney general of the federation and minister of justice, Abubakar Malami.

The consistency of the attacks indicates a sinister motive to cause a submission to the whims and caprices of a select few who are bent on subverting the judicial process in Nigeria in ways too numerous to mention.

As stakeholders in the justice sector, we are tempted to believe that the stance of the AGF with regards to assets recovery has not gone down well with some individuals hence the puerile attempt at blackmail and intimidation.

It is an unfortunate episode in the annals of the country as to why some individuals who, for reasons best known to them, have arrogated certain powers and privileges. As such, they have carried on like mini gods by blackmailing those who have put the country’s interest first.

We are aware that the asset recovery drive of the federal government had indeed ruffled some feathers, hence the target of the AGF, whose responsibility it is to ensure the successful implementation of the asset recovery drive of the federal government.

The Coalition for Human Rights and Rule of Law wishes to inform members of the general public of these attempts that have been targeted at the personality of the AGF through fictitious publications by some select media houses, as well as blogs and other information dissemination platforms.

The members of the unsuspecting general public are advised to ignore these publications as some select individuals sponsor them to blackmail and intimidate the AGF into submission by dumping the asset recovery efforts of the federal government.

We state in unequivocal terms that the assets recovery initiative of the federal government has received commendations both nationally and internationally. This much has been evident in the quantum of recoveries made so far through the display of transparency and accountability.

The Coalition for Human Rights and Rule of Law vehemently states that the attempt at jeopardizing the federal government’s efforts towards the successful implementation/execution of its assets recovery initiative shall not be tolerated.

We consequently wish to bring to the attention of media houses of this nefarious plot by these individuals to rubbish the image of the AGF. It is our considered opinion that the offence of the AGF is ensuring that the process of asset recovery is in line with global best practices.

This stance has not gone down well with some select individuals who are afraid of the repercussion of their actions. As such, they have constituted themselves into clogs in the wheels of the country’s progress.

The Coalition for Human Rights and Rule of Law wishes to use this medium to commend the federal government on its efforts at assets recovery. We also commend the attorney general and minister of justice for his commitment that has recorded tremendous results so far.

We urge him not to relent in the drive that has gathered momentum regardless of the attempts at blackmailing him into submission to their dictates that are not in the country’s overall interest. We call on members of the general public to rally support for the efforts of the Muhammadu Buhari administration towards assets recovery in the country.

It is indeed a collective enterprise that requires all hands to be on deck. Those behind the well-orchestrated attempts at blackmailing the attorney general and minister of justice are advised to desist from such despicable conduct in the country’s interest of peace and tranquillity”.

Kano CPC discovers company that manufactures adulterated cooking oil

The Kano State Consumer Protection Council (KSCPC) claims to have discovered a factory producing adulterated cooking oil.

The commission’s efforts to protect the public from using unwholesome, fake, and adulterated products led to the discovery of the illegal activity.

Idris Bello-Danbazau, the council’s managing director, revealed this in a statement issued by the council’s spokesman, Musbahu Yakasai, in Kano on Wednesday.

Mr Bello-Danbazau led an inspection team to the site in Dakata Rinji, Nasarawa local government, Kano metropolis, accompanied by the governor’s senior special assistant on quality assurance, Sale Muhammad.

He claims that the cooking oil refinery is located near a large refuse collection center. He explained that the environment was filthy and hazardous to the public’s health.

“KSCPC is not intended to be used in any way.”

The All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for the by-election into the Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency has come to a halt.

After the procedures, the 7-member electoral panel informed reporters that two of the contestants, Abbey Aku and Suleiman Yahaya Kwande, had received the same number of votes.

Habu Ajiya, the chairman of the election panel, said votes had been cast for four candidates: Suleiman Yahaya Kwande, Abbey Aku, Lumumba Dah Adeh, and Aliyu Adamu.

“The primaries have come to a halt because the top two candidates have the same score. Hon Abbey Aku and Hon Suleiman Yahaya Kwande are their names. They each received 344 votes.

“The panel is unable to proclaim a winner or make a decision in this case.” In such a stalemate, we must return to the party’s national secretariat; only the party has the power to make a decision,” he said.

The situation, on the other hand, caused discontent among party members and delegates, with both Aku and Kwande expressing unhappiness with the election results. Each claimed to have come out on top in the poll.

The by-election is being held to fill the vacant seat of Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, which has been vacant since Haruna Maitala’s death last year.

NPHCDA declared the March target for 50% COVID-19 vaccination unrealistic

The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) said Wednesday that the March 2022 aim of 50% COVID-19 vaccination may be unattainable due to Nigerians’ aversion to the vaccine.

It said specifically that 17 states in the country, including five in the South East, had continued to ignore the COVID-19 immunization, emphasizing that daily numbers from the states were bad.

“We should not take chances as a nation,” Dr. Bassey Okposen, Director of Disease and Immunization Control at NAHCDA, said in response to the development. If we are protected, the virus will cease spreading, and I believe we are in danger until we recognize the necessity for vaccine. People routinely assert that COVID-19 and sometimes we get worried because when the pandemic started in India, they were not accepting the vaccine.

“They claimed there was no COVID-19 until the Delta variant hit, when they lost over 200,000 people and recorded over two million cases per day.” It’s the same COVID-19 vaccine they used to keep the virus at bay.”

Okposen stated at the South East Primary Health Care and COVID-19 vaccination review meeting in Enugu that the South East states had continued to have a poor record in vaccination when compared to other states in the country, stressing that the region’s output was a threat to the Federal Government’s 50% target.

He went on to say that only 1,438 people were vaccinated daily in Abia State, compared to an alleged 17,208 per day, indicating that the state is well behind in vaccine expectations.

“In the state of Anambra, the figure is about 1,152 daily, but going by the vaccination target, the state is supposed to vaccinate 25, 848 per day, which is also far from the target.

“For Ebonyi State, the data shows that the state vaccinates about 608 daily compared to 12,486 per day, while Enugu vaccinates 1,661 per day, which is far below the 18,989 target, just as Imo State currently vaccinates 888 daily as against 23,263 per day,” he stated.

Okposen said going by the numbers from the councils in the region, “it would seem that they are doing the same thing. Efforts should be made to know what is going on at the councils in the region.”

Speaking, Chief Executive Officer of NPHCDA, Dr. Faisal Shaibu, stated that the meeting was necessitated to discuss the vaccination gaps and strategise on how to improve and motivate the people get vaccinated.

He said the agency would not rest on its oars and watch the negative information being spread about the vaccine, insisting: “The vaccine is safe and has no side effects.”

On his part, representative of Enugu North Senatorial District and Chairman, Senate Committee on Primary Health Care and Communicable Diseases, Chukwuka Utazi, who described the figures as sad and unacceptable, appealed to the South East region to embrace the COVID-19 vaccines.

Global coastline rebellion to hit 19 countries on 4th February

Movements across 19 countries of both the Global South and the Global North will march together this Friday, February 4th, in unprecedented international action against neo-colonialism, corporate power and environmental destruction, standing in solidarity with Most Affected People and Areas (MAPA).

Communities and activists on the front lines of the environmental crisis are asking the world to join their fight for the oceans, the seas and global justice, under the hashtag #oceanazo. Oceans act as geographic barriers between continents, but on Friday we will show how they connect us.

Multiple oil spills around the world in just the last few weeks demonstrate the harms caused by fossil fuel extraction: Chevron (US) is responsible for approximately 50 thousand litres spilled in Thailand​​​​​​​ last week, and days later almost two million litres were spilled in Ecuador, polluting Amazonian ecosystems for the second time in only two years. ​​​​​​

In Perú, a catastrophic oil spill by European oil and gas multinational Repsol is currently affecting over 20 beaches​​​​​​​, devastating marine life and ecosystems, bringing several endangered species to the brink of extinction, and threatening the health and livelihoods of thousands of people. The company denies responsibility for the spill and is refusing to pay for the clean-up.

On the coastlines of Argentina and South Africa, thousands are mobilizing against European fossil fuel corporations, including Shell, Equinor and Total, who are poised to conduct seismic surveys, deepwater drilling and fracking, threatening similar devastation to communities, marine wildlife and the environment for corporate greed.

These are just some examples of how multinational corporations are destroying the homelands of local communities and Black, Indigenous and People of Colour globally, often employing methods – like fracking – that are banned in their homelands due to their devastating effects on ecosystems and human health. To extract fossil fuels, they turn areas of the Global South into sacrifice zones, designating as disposable entire populations. They will not stop their neo-colonial exploitation unless they feel pressure from the streets.

This is why activists are now responding globally to stop these corporations from polluting the oceans, disturbing marine ecosystems, destroying the livelihoods of millions, while at the same time greenwashing their businesses in the Global North to perpetuate their profits.

Osver Polo Carrasco of The Citizen Movement against Climate Change (Mocicc) in Perú explains: “We demand just and collective energy sovereignty against exploitative multinational corporations; a halt to the decrees and legislations that promote hydrocarbons; an end to extractive projects in the sea, land and jungle; sanctions against corporations that have polluted and damaged these peoples and territories; and that corporations pay reparations to those already affected.”

We are coming together internationally as a global rebellion of coastlines, affected communities and supporters, building a multinational resistance against a multinational threat. From South Africa to the Netherlands, from Argentina to Norway, from Perú to Germany, and many more, demonstrations and creative actions will be performed by a vast diversity of movements at corporate headquarters, national embassies, on affected beaches and in the streets of all participating countries.

The oceans are rising and so are we! #oceanazo.

“President Muhammadu Buhari will travel to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital, on Thursday for the 35th Ordinary Session of the African Union Heads of State and Government. On Wednesday evening, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity Femi Adesina made the announcement. Under the theme “Building Resilience in Nutrition and Food Security on the African Continent: Strengthen Agriculture, Accelerate Human Capital, Social and Economic Development,” President Buhari will join other African leaders in finding solutions to the continent’s political, economic, and social challenges. “Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Governor of Lagos State, signed bills on Wednesday to establish two new universities in the state: the Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) and the Lagos State University of Science and Technology. He signed the bills transferring the Ikorodu, Isolo, and Surulere campuses of Lagos State Polytechnic to the University of Science and Technology, as well as the Adeniran Ogunsanya and Michael Otedola Colleges of Education in Ijanikin and Epe, respectively, to the Lagos State University of Education. The signing ceremony was attended by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, and Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General, Mr. Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), as well as members of the Governing Councils and tertiary institution management staff, among others. Governor Sanwo-Olu, speaking after signing the bills, said that Lagos and its people now have two more universities to add to the existing Lagos State University (LASU), which was founded in 1982 by the late Alhaji Lateef Jakande, the first Executive Governor of Lagos State. “We are doing this very quickly because we need to take this law to the National Universities Commission (NUC), which will do their due diligence and we believe they will give us a timely approval when we all go and receive the certificates for the establishment of the two universities,” he explained. Jeff Zucker, CNN’s longtime CEO and a titan of the news industry, announced his resignation on Wednesday, according to a major American news organization.
I was asked about a consensual relationship with my closest colleague, someone I have worked with for more than 20 years, as part of the investigation into Chris Cuomo’s tenure at CNN, Zucker wrote in an email to staff. “I acknowledged the relationship has evolved in recent years.” I was required to disclose it when it began, but I didn’t. Boko Haram terrorists have killed a top commander of the Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF), Ibrahim Maliya, after a recent bombing along Biu-Damboa Road in Borno State, Northeast Nigeria.

The deceased was always at the forefront rendering assistance to the Nigerian Army and other security agencies in fighting insurgents and other insecurity related issues bedeveling Southern Borno.

Reacting to his death, a key member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Borno State, Kudla Milinda, popularly known as Haske, condoled with the people of Biu local government area over the killing of Maliya.

‘Haske’, the Managing Director of Aerokeys and Aviare construction company in a condolence message described the demise of Maliya as a great loss to Biu and Southern Borno senatorial district.

The message was contained in a statement issued by Amos Adzib, Director media and publicity Haske campaign organisation on Wednesday.

“Though his demise is painful, his legacies of service, love and compassion remain indelible as he has impacted the younger generation to continue in his footsteps. May his gentle soul rest in Jannah,” Haske said.

Adamu Report: APC Women write Buhari, NEC over February convention

The Coalition of All Progressive Congress (APC) Women Groups, has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to postpone indefinitely the National Convention of the party fixed for February, this year.

This was contained in a statement signed by Dr. Cecilia Ikechukwu and other members which was made available to newsmen on Wednesday.

According to the coalition, fixing the National Convention this February is akin to building a superstructure on unstable soil.

It said there are several unresolved contentious that are consequential but left unaddressed before progressing to other unsustainable phases.

“Your Excellency, currently the party has faction in 14 states, which is because the Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) under His Excellency, Mai Malam Buni has done a good job in reconciling factions in other states and re-organization the party.

“The party is yet to recover from the attendant losses from elections that were ordinarily guaranteed in Rivers and Zamfara state during the 2019 General Elections.

“Instead of learning the hard lessons contained in those avoidable experiences, the State Governors and the colluding party leaders are rather adamant on repeating the show of shame on a national scale by fixing a date for the National Convention without first resolving the damaging issues on ground.

“As it was with Rivers and Zamfara States, there are legal implications for how the party is progressing with going into a national convention with all the issues surrounding the party.

“We fear the APC is now firmly placed to lose all the positions our members will context for, not at the polls but on legal technicality as was the case in those two states,” the group stated.

Consequently, the women group appealed “that the convention be postponed indefinitely to allow the CEPC resolve these issues within the next three (3) days and come up with a comprehensive report on how to navigate the murky waters the APC currently finds itself.

“That the Abdullahi Adamu committee be disbanded immediately, and a new committee set up, since this committee has serially failed in its mandate.

“That Mr. President unites the APC stakeholders and lead them to counter the influence the cabals that want to destroy the party from within at all costs.

It is our firm belief that these steps, if urgently taken, can pull the APC from the brink, although the window for saving the party is fast closing. Please Mr. President, save the APC from implosion,” the statement stated.
