Uche Nwosu: HURIWA takes PSC to court over church invasion

0

The Police Service Commission has appeared before the Federal High Court in Abuja in relation to the armed policemen’s invasion of St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Owerri, Imo State.

Remember that on Sunday, December 26, 2021, masked gunmen stormed the church, with reports claiming that they were kidnappers who whisked Uche Nwosu, a former governorship aspirant in the state, away.

They had fired sporadically in the church during service while removing Nwosu, and the police later clarified the situation, saying they had carried out the arrest, which many saw as a kidnapping attempt.
Although Nwosu was subsequently moved to Abuja by the policemen and later released, the police are yet to explain why Nwosu, who is the son-in-law to former governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, was arrested in a Gestapo style.

And in a suit filed before the court by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA sought an order of mandamus compelling the respondent – the Police Service Commission – to probe the church invasion and the attempted kidnap of Nwosu.

The human rights advocacy group also sought “an order of mandamus compelling the PSC to investigate the shootings inside and around the church premises.

“An order to tender before this court and case also the applicant with a certified true copy of the findings and or result of the said investigations.”

The group also wants an order to prosecute, discipline and or punish any of its employee(s) who is found culpable.

Some of the grounds relied upon by HURIWA to sought the reliefs include,

“That the police officers acted without regards to innocent citizens, children, worshippers in the church premises as the shot recklessly into the influence of some drugs or alcohol.”

“That the PSC is clothed with the powers to amongst other thing dismiss and exercise disciplinary control over persons who are police officers except the inspector general of police..”

Before resolving to go to court, HURIWA’s demand for the arrest and prosecution of all culpable police officers had proved abortive.

Obaseki: “Yahoo Boys” must be incredible… We need to re-direct their thinking in positively

Edo’s governor, Godwin Obaseki, says his administration is prepared to combat the state’s growing Internet fraud problem.

The governor said the Internet fraudsters, also known as Yahoo Yahoo boys, must be very bright to carry out such illegal activities, speaking at a state education town hall meeting on Friday.

The government, according to Obaseki, must assist fraudsters in reorienting their thinking toward positive endeavors.

“I’m worried.” The issues of cyber fraud and Yahoo culture are significant. “I’m requesting that everyone send as much information as possible to my office,” Obaseki said.
“On Monday, I am going to see the chairman of EFCC. I am not condemning those involved. There must be a reason why that culture has become so prolific in Edo state. We must find the root cause and address them as we did in the days of trafficking.

“Let’s see how we can correct it because these children must be very brilliant. The kind of things they do, how they hack into other people’s accounts. How do we re-direct that thinking into something more positive?”

Reno Omokri, a former Presidential aide, has urged Minister of Interior Rauf Aregbesola to reveal the secret behind the All Progressives Congress’s (APC) National Leader Bola Tinubu’s wealth.

Omokri was reacting to Aregbesola’s candidate, Moshood Adeoti, losing his (Aregbesola) ward to his political rival, Governor Gboyega Oyetola, in the APC primary election for the upcoming gubernatorial election in Osun State.

According to Omokri, a social activist, if the minister does not act to stifle Tinubu’s political ambitions, the former Lagos State Governor and Oyetola may frustrate him after President Muhammadu Buhari leaves office.
In a post on his official Facebook page, Omokri urged Buhari’s Minister to expose the real age and other secrets Tinubu, a 2023 presidential candidate, may have been keeping from Nigerians.

He said, “See how you have been disgraced by Tinubu and Oyetola in Osun. Now is the time for you to expose your godfather, Tinubu. Tell the world his real name, his genuine age, and the secret behind his stupendous wealth. You know those secrets. Now, spill the beans! Because if you remain silent now, Oyetola and Tinubu will only grow politically stronger.

“And when Buhari goes in 2023, you will be naked with nobody to protect you. Imagine how miserable your life will be with Tinubu in Aso Rock and Oyetola in Osogbo.

“They both know many secrets (remember the Opon Imo contracts and the allegations against your son, Kabiru). They will have the Police, the EFCC, and the ICPC at their beck and call. Even if you run to London, you may receive the Ibori treatment.

“You see what I am doing to Buhari as #BuhariTormentor? Multiply that by a factor of ten. That is what they will do to you. So, better talk now, or be silenced after 2023.”

2023: It’s Disgraceful That Old Bullion Van Politicians Refuse To Leave The Stage For Youths— Bakare, Pastor

Pastor Tunde Bakare, the Serving Overseer of the Citadel Global Community Church, has decried the refusal of old Nigerians to step down from the political stage in favor of the youths.

Bakare blamed the country’s problems on “moneybags and bullion van politicians,” whom he accused of wanting to be in power at the expense of the younger generation.

The attitude of older Nigerian politicians, he said, who have refused to give the youth a chance in leadership positions, is a shame.

On Saturday, the Pastor spoke at the launch of “Footsteps of a Rebel,” an autobiography written by the Babanla Adinni of Egbaland, Chief Tayo Sowunmi, in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, to commemorate his 80th birthday.
While delivering a speech tagged ‘Worthy Nation Building Legacies By The Older Generation of Nigerians’, Bakare called for inter-generational re-integration between older and younger generations.

This, according to Bakare, is part of efforts to rebuild the Nigerian nation.

He maintained that, “It is a shame that while younger generations are taking over leadership in other countries, older generation refuses to leave the stage in Nigeria.”

He condemned the alleged sidestepping of the youth, saying this has hampered the development of Nigeria.

“The nation’s development has suffered because of the marginalisation of the youth and the progressives who abandoned politics,” Bakare said.

While calling for generational reintegration from the households, the Ogun indigene called for the embracing of cultural values to foster nation building.

He also suggested mentoring and leadership development for the younger generation.

Ebonyi PDP Guber Aspirant Faults Ayodele’s Prophecy in 2023

Hon. Chris Usulor, a leading gubernatorial aspirant in Ebonyi State under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform, took a swipe at the leader of the INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, over an alleged false prophecy over the weekend.

Usulor and three (3) other governorship aspirants in Ebonyi are said to have been predicted to fail in 2023 by Primate Elijah Ayodele.

Usulor, a third-term member of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly and a senatorial aspirant from the Ebonyi Central senatorial zone, had expressed interest in running for governor in the 2023 general election.

Chief Chris Usulor tasked the leader of the INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Ayodele, to be sure of the names he saw in his prophecy and denied being among the people he saw.

Usulor said: “Our attention has been drawn to Primate Ayodele’s prophecy. The name of our aspirant is Hon Chris Usulor and not Uzulor as Primate Ayodele saw in his prophecy.

“When God ministers to his true and chosen prophets, the prophecy is always clear without any ambiguities or confusion and God is not a God of attention seeker.

“True men of God are judged and respected by their past proven prophecy records. Hon Chris Usulor candidacy is divine as exemplified by the number of respected clergymen that are supporting him, coupled with an overwhelming support by the people of Ebonyi state.

“The second commandment states” thou shall not take the name of the Lord in vain” and the 9th commandment says” thou shalt not bear false witness against your neighbour.”

“Hon Chris Usulor is ready and focused to answer the clarion call of Ebonyi people who are aiding him to lead them as their governor come 2023.

“We advise Primate Ayodele not to fall victim to desperate political contenders in the state, who might have offered him money knowing fully well, they don’t stand any chance with Hon Chris Usulor” , the statement noted.

Investigation revealed that the leader of the INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Ayodele had in a statement signed by his media aide, Osho Oluwatosin, stated that the politicians mentioned should not waste money on election campaigns because God has not anointed them to lead the state.

According to Ayodele: “some politicians who will not be governors of their states in 2023, despite having ambitions to succeed their governors.

Osun APC Primary: Oyetola Confident, Claiming That Violence Didn’t Occur As Expected

Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of Osun State is pleased that there was no violence during the All Progressives Congress governorship primary election in Osun State on Saturday.

He praised the election as peaceful, and predicted that he would win.

There was an uneasy calm in the state ahead of Oyetola’s fierce battle for the party’s sole ticket with Moshood Adeoti, a former Secretary to the State Government.

Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the Minister of Interior, has nominated Adeoti, a former state chairman of the party.

Also in the race is a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Lasun Yusuf.

Speaking at his ward in Boripe LGA, Iragbiji, Oyetola said the election should not be seen as a battle.

He said, “I want to appeal to all our people across the state to maintain peace. Election process should not be a battle field or a do-or-die affair. Let everyone exercise their choice in determining who represents them at the party level and ultimately at the general election.

“So far so good, I think this process has gone well contrary to the speculation of violence. We have been in contact with a number of places and we have received positive signals of peace.

“Really, I don’t see why choosing a candidate to represent the party should bring violence.”

Oyetola said the election should not be seen as a battle.

He added, “I will win by the grace of God. The other choice is not there. I want to appeal to all of us to see this issue as a family affair. We are APC all through.

Osinbajo Seeks Sanctions for Delay in Administration of Justice

0

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has stated that addressing delays in the delivery of justice should include imposing sanctions through a more deliberate regime for the award of adverse and wasted costs.

However, Osinbajo, speaking at the 20th annual memorial anniversary symposium in honor of legal practitioner Mr. Bankole Olumide Aluko (SAN), said that challenges affecting the administration of justice in Nigeria are being addressed, and that there is much hope for positive reform of the system as more result-oriented work is being done and some real changes expected.
Regarding the impact of the law on democracy, the Vice President noted that the democratic rights of the people and their confidence in the notion of a government of the people, by the people, for the people, suffers when the system of electoral justice fails to see itself as a handmaid of the democratic process.

Citing the decision of the Supreme Court in the 2019 elections in Zamfara State to buttress his point, he said that to make sense, judicial decisions and reasoning must in most cases meet the common notions of fairness and justice.

According to him, “The court is a taxpayer-funded public resource. The wasting or abuse of its finite time and resources without strict consequence will eventually discredit the system. Adverse costs are paid to the successful party in a civil case and wasted costs are directed against legal practitioners for poor professional standards in the conduct of a case. Severe costs should attend adjournments, there is no greater waste of taxpayer’s funds than for a scheduled case to have to be adjourned. It is only heavy costs that will discourage this malfeasance.

“The system of justice must recognize the larger principles that it serves. In judicial interpretation, the spirit is as important as the letter of the law. Otherwise, judicial decisions become technistic applications far removed from common sense. The notions of justice that would meet public expectations of fairness and equity are those that promote substance over form. The observance of technicality over merit will always alienate the system of justice from the people it is meant to serve.”

On expectations from judicial officers, Osinbajo said while the best is expected from judicial officers, the nation must equally ensure that the conditions under which they operate are not only befitting but are good enough to attract the best of minds in the profession.

In addition, the Vice President said the institution and infrastructure remain key to reforming the system, stating that the judge is, of course, central to how our system of justice works.

Conmenting on the process for judicial appointments, the Vice Pressed stressed that the robustness and transparency of the processes in other jurisdictions provide comfort to the candidates of the fairness of the selection process; and enable the public to have front-row seat in some of these processes, arguing that such a process be replicated in Nigeria.

He extolled the late Aluko’s mastery of his craft, highlighted his varied abilities, and praised his contributions to the legal profession in the country.

Surrender Or Face Wrath Of Police, New Katsina CP Warns Terrorists

Idrisu Dauda Dabban, the newly appointed Katsina State Commissioner of Police, has urged terrorists in the state’s communities to surrender their devilish acts or face the full wrath of the police.

He went on to say that he would work closely with senior police officers and other security agencies in the state to combat banditry and other criminal activities.

Dabban, who spoke at his first press conference at the command’s headquarters in Katsina yesterday, said banditry would be eradicated with citizen cooperation.

He said: “We are all aware of the problem of this command which is mainly banditry. We will put our hands together and see how we will bring down the crime rate here, especially banditry which has become the order of the day in this state.”

While vowing to improve on the achievements recorded by his predecessor, Dabban said: “Anything that is criminal does not pay. No crime pays so the terrorists should abandon their devilish activities and surrender or we will get to them.”

For Equity, Presidency Should Be Zoned To South-East In 2023,  Ex-NERC Chairman

0

Dr. Sam Amadi, the former Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), has suggested that the major political parties should zone their presidency to the South-East for equity and justice.

The notion of zoning the presidency to the South, according to Amadi, who is also the Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thoughts, is fraudulent and unacceptable, noting that the South has not been marginalized in the presidency as a region, but the South-East has been marginalized as a zone.
Speaking with Journalists, Dr Amadi noted that just as political elites agreed in consensus to zone presidency to South-West in 1999 as a way to respond to the 1993 crisis, the elites should also agree to micro-zone to South East in 2023 if they believe that there is a crisis in the region that needs to be addressed.

He, however, said that if the elites felt that there was no crisis to address in the South-East, hence the decision of zoning to the region was not needed, then the 2023 presidential election should be thrown open for all qualified Nigerians to participate.

“In our conversations, we have been reviewing how the process of zoning is playing out, and we have few concerns, number one is that we just realised that this politics of zoning has taken a dangerous turn as a result of response to the last 6 or 7 years of this administration which many groups feel marginalised.

“Zoning should be properly understood, ideally, elections should be open competition. The notion of zoning grew as a response largely during the June 12 election when the election was annulled, and the political elites as a matter of consensus agreed that there was the need to deal with the crisis of confidence in the South-West.

“Our view in Abuja school is that you don’t need to zone anything if you don’t think that there is a clear present danger. Zoning is affirmative action, if you see a crisis that you need to respond to, and then everybody can decide to agree on zoning.

“Zoning is an abstraction from normal politics which is a need to solve a problem, so our view in Abuja school is that if you want to zone, then the zoning should go to the South East straight, not South-South.

“We reject the notion of zoning to the South for the clear reason that the South has suffered no peculiar and aggravated damage in Nigeria politics in terms of representation viz-a-viz the North”.

He explained that there is no basis to zone presidency to the South because, since 1999, the South has been in power more than the north.

“Since 1999, the South has suffered no peculiar damage in terms of political representation for us to trigger zoning to the South. The only place where a national consensus for zoning is agreed is the South East. It is a place that has not held presidential power.

“Our view is that if the Nigerian elites think there is a crisis that needs affirmative action, it is South East, not South, if they don’t think there is a crisis, then it should be open competition to give all Nigerians the right to participate.

“Since 1999, the South has held office more time than the North, If President Buhari finishes his tenure that will be 10 years of Northern President, two years under PDP, eight years under APC, Obasanjo did Eight years plus Jonathan’s six years, that means the north has ten years while the South has 14 years, there is no equity or justice zoning to the South.

“We reject a zoning campaign for the South because there is no justice for it. We are saying that what Nigeria needs now is power-sharing, an arrangement in which, just like Abacha Constitution that was cancelled, proposed where the major offices in the Federal executive are shared among all the various ethnic and socio-groups so there will be a balance.

“But if the Nigeria political elites think that because of the crisis they think the South East has not held this position and the issues of separatists then they can zone specifically to South Ea
