Don’t spew hatred with social media, NYSC warns corps members

Major General Shuaibu Ibrahim, the Director of the National Youth Service Corps, has advised corps members against spreading false information on social media and fanning societal animosity.

The warning was given by DG during the swearing-in ceremony of 1,608 Corps members deployed to Akwa Ibom State among the 2022 Batch ‘A’ Stream 1 at the Orientation Camp, Ikot Itie Udung, Nsit Atai LGA on Tuesday, who was represented by the Akwa Ibom State Coordinator of NYSC, Chinyere Ekwe.

While cautioning them against drug misuse, cultism, and other social vices, the DG also reminded them of one of NYSC’s main goals: to promote national unity and integration, emphasizing that they should only promote values that will bring the country together.

During the orientation exercise, he advised the corps members to take advantage of the self-employment options provided by the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Program.

“Permit me to take this opportunity to warn you about cultism, drug abuse, and other societal vices.

“I further implore you to refrain from using social media to distribute fake news, incite hatred, or for other harmful goals, and instead to use it to promote unity and growth.”

“You are strongly encouraged to maintain a high level of security awareness at all times and to report any suspicious characters or actions in your immediate vicinity to the proper authorities,” Ibrahim warned.

He asked the corps members to get themselves immunized in accordance with the Federal Government’s requirements.

Court Sets Date For Judgment In Case Of Danish Man Accused Of Murdering His Wife, Daughter

The case against a Danish man, Peter Nielsen, accused of killing his Nigerian wife and daughter will be heard by the Lagos High Court on May 6 at Tafawa Balewa Square.

After the lawyers in the case adopted their final written addresses, Justice Bolanle Okikiolu-Ighile set the date.

The state has charged the defendant with two counts of murder in violation of Section 223 of the Lagos Criminal Laws of 2015.

The state claims that the defendant, who is 53 years old, murdered his Nigerian singer wife, Zainab, also known as Alizee, and his daughter on April 5, 2018, about 3.45 a.m. at their Banana Island home in Lagos’ Ikoyi neighborhood.

The foreigner, on the other hand, entered a not guilty plea to the charge.

The defence lawyer, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Olasupo Shasore, moved the last written statement during the case’s resumed hearing on Tuesday, asking the court to acquit and dismiss his client.

Shasore filed two problems for the court’s consideration, one of which he claims concerns the defendant’s right to a fair trial.

He highlighted a court decision dated July 19, 2021, in which the judge denied an appeal to have Peter Nielsen, the man suspected of killing his Nigerian wife and daughter, removed from the murder trial.

Shasore had asked the court for the production of an exhibit, the nightgown the deceased wore the night she was killed, in that application. He requested that the exhibit be made available for DNA testing.

Shasore further claimed that he had requested a search of the court’s records, but that the exhibit could not be retrieved owing to the court’s burning on October 21, 2020, during the #ENDSARS saga.

He argued at the time that because the exhibit was missing, the defendant would not receive substantial justice in the absence of the exhibit.

“We had no idea that exhibit PWN would not be found when we submitted our application.” The defendant’s constitutional rights have been violated in the absence of exhibit PWN. “In addition, the court has been denied the opportunity to analyze PWN,” the SAN added.

“The DNA analysis was generated from this PWN, which is the nightgown the deceased was wearing at the time of her death. “In his testimony, the prosecution’s expert witness relied his whole evidence on PWN,” Shasore added.

The submission, albeit clever, was deemed premature by Justice Okikiolu-Ighile.

The judge ruled that both the prosecution and the defense had called witnesses and presented exhibits that were not based on the exhibit in question.

“As a result, when all of the information has been presented and final written addresses have been accepted, the court will examine the totality of all of the material before it.”

The judge ruled that “the submission of the learned silk is premature,” and that “the application sought and the concomitant remedies are hereby dismissed.”

The SAN remarked that the presumption that there was an eye witness, the second objection presented by the defense counsel, was a critical point.

“We submit that there was no eye witness,” he added. “The so-called eye witness indicated she was behind the children’s door, which is nearly impossible to see the Master’s bedroom from behind the children’s door.”

“We encourage your Lordship to consider all of the defense’s submissions on all of the state’s evidence that was not produced, as well as the DNA testing that was obtained but not produced.”

He insisted, “We have a reasonable doubt in favor of the defendant’s innocence.”

“I encourage the court to accept our position, and your Lordship should acquit and dismiss the offender after four years in custody so that he can properly mourn his wife and daughter.”

“We have reacted to all the issues brought by the defense, including the two points highlighted by the learned senior counsel, the eye witness PW6 and the circumstantial evidence placed before your Lordship,” Adebayo Haroun, the Lagos State Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, said in his response.

“The prosecution has proven beyond a reasonable doubt that Peter Nielsen killed Zainab Nielsen and Petra Nielsen on April 5, 2018.” “My Lordship, we have nothing further to add to the final written address; we urge your Lordship to find the defendant guilty as charged,” he said.

The court was then delayed until May 6.

Court Warns Nadabo Energy Boss’ Counsel About Alleged N1.4bn Fraud: Defendant Stalls Proceedings

The trial of Abubakar Ali Peters and his company, Nadabo Energy Limited, in front of Justice Christopher Balogun of the Lagos High Court Ikeja, was again stalled on Monday, when the defendant’s counsel, Osagie Isiramen, told the court that the defense was not ready to continue with the cross-examination of the fifth prosecution witness, Abdulrasheed Bawa, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

The EFCC has filed a 27-count indictment against Abubakar and his company for allegedly using fake documents to acquire N1,464,961,978.24 in oil subsidies from the Federal Government after inflating the quantity of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, purportedly imported and provided by the company.

The defense attorney began his cross-examination of the witness on December 20, 2021. At the January 25, 2022 sessions, he also cross-examined the witness.

On Monday’s sessions, Isiramen informed the Court that he would be unable to continue cross-examination.

He claimed that the defense had yet to get a Certified True Copy (CTC) of the court’s records of proceedings, which prevented him from continuing with the cross-examination.

He stated, “We are not prepared to continue.”

“We requested a certified copy of the proceedings, but we have yet to receive it,” he said.

The Judge, surprised by the defense counsel’s claim, noted that the proceedings records had already been prepared and that no certification was required because they were only needed for cross-examination of the witness.

Instead of asking for a certified true copy, the Judge pointed out that because the court’s file was a public record, the defense could have readily sought it from the court’s registrar and read it for cross-examination.

“The file is always there, and the records have already been printed off,” the judge remarked.

“What the hell is going on here?” Is it not appropriate to use it during the witness’s cross-examination?”

Concerned about the lawsuit’s incapacity to proceed, the Judge highlighted that previous cases have to be vacated in order for the case to proceed.

“I didn’t want to disrupt the proceedings, and I’m not happy with what’s going on here.”

“You don’t stall proceedings with something like this,” the judge added.

“I shall yield to the defendant’s counsel’s plea to proceed with the cross-examination of the prosecution’s witness for the last time,” the Judge said as he adjourned the case till March 29, 30, and 31, 2022.

“The already printed record of proceedings should be given over to the defense counsel for cross-examination.”

“On or about the 3rd day of April 2012 at Lagos, within the Lagos Judicial Division, Nadabo Energy Limited and Abubakar Ali Peters, with intent to defraud, fraudulently obtained the sum of N978,401,732.09 (Nine Hundred and Seventy-eight Million Four Hundred and One Thousand Seven Hundred and Thirty-two Naira Nine Kobo) from the Federal Government of Nigeria by falsely claiming that the sum represented subsidy accrued

“Nadabo Energy Limited and Abubakar Ali Peters, on or about the 25th day of October 2011 at Lagos, within the Lagos Judicial Division, with intent to defraud and in order to facilitate your obtaining money by false pretense from the Federal Government of Nigeria under the Petroleum Support Fund (PSF), forged a document titled: Certificate of Marine Insurance no. 0047851 and purported the Marine Insurance certificate to have been issued by Staco Insura,” according to another count.
