Sixty motorcycles were recovered, and an unknown number of cattle were returned to their owners, according to him. Between Sunday and Wednesday, he said, bandits were killed in the Rafi and Mariga local governments’ Kundu and Babanlaba axes, as well as other parts of the state.

The commissioner hinted that two security personnel had died in the fight against the bandits, but praised the Joint State Security Taskforce’s valiant efforts.

Nigerian Lawmakers Rejected Bill To Regulate Foreign Education For Public Officers’ Children

0

The House of Representatives has rejected a bill that would make it illegal for public officials to send their children and wards to foreign schools without the Minister of Education’s permission.

The bill’s sponsor, Sergius Ogun (PDP, Ogun), had introduced a similar bill in the 8th Assembly, but it was rejected by lawmakers.

He also sponsored a bill requiring public officials to seek medical attention in Nigerian hospitals. The lawmakers at the time also rejected this bill, citing a violation of fundamental rights.

According to Mr. Ogun’s bill, a public official can only send his or her children or wards to foreign schools with the Minister of Education’s approval. It also requires officers to show proof of financial ability to pay their wards’ school fees.

This bill comes after the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) went on strike over the 2009 agreements, causing yet another shutdown of federal universities.

The bill’s highlights

“A public officer shall not send his ward or children oversea for studies without declaring an interest subject to approval,” according to section 4 of the rejected bill.

The bill’s section 6 outlines the procedures for obtaining approval. “A public officer expressing an interest in sending his ward or child abroad for further studies shall submit the following documents for consideration,” it stated.

(a) A completed form containing the public officer’s name and address, the child’s or ward’s name and age, his level of education, the name of the intended school abroad, the duration of study, and the number of children studying abroad;

(b) Appointment letter

c) Accounts payable and receivable statement

d) Paystub for salary

e) Asset Declaration Form; and

(f) A sworn affidavit stating that he can afford to pay for his education.

(1) The minister shall conduct an investigation to verify the authenticity of the documents submitted for approval, according to Section 7.

For breaking the law, Section 9 of the bill stipulates a fine of N1 million or three years in prison.

The discussion

Mr. Ogun, who led the bill debate, drew a link between deteriorating public school facilities and a desire for foreign schools.

He claimed that the bill has the ability to address the allocation of resources to public schools.

“The problem is that the majority of those who attend private educational institutions or study abroad are the children and wards of Nigerian public officials. These are the officers who should be in charge of constructing our public institutions, according to the lawmaker.

He expressed concern about the outflow of scarce foreign resources to fund these outlays. Nigeria sends over N1 billion to Ghana’s economy, according to the lawmaker.

While opposing the bill, Chiyere Igwe (PDP, Rivers) stated that the content of the bill violates the spirit of the 1999 constitution, which guarantees every Nigerian the right to move anywhere.

He claimed that the Code of Conduct Act is sufficient to determine whether a public official has the financial means to send his or her children to international schools.

“As far as I’m concerned, this bill violates Nigerians’ fundamental human rights, which guarantee their freedom of movement.” The constitution guarantees you complete freedom of movement. As a result, you are violating the constitution with this bill, and it is therefore null and void.

“Not all public officers who send their children to school have control over public funds.” I am Chiyere Igwe, and I can assure you that I have no control over the public. Is it wrong for me to send my children to school in another country?

“You are only allowed to farm under the Code of Conduct Act,” he continued, “and with this bill, you are infringing on the constitution.”

On the basis of the 1999 constitution, Leke Abejide (ADC, Kogi) also spoke out against the bill. Many people, he claimed, had their children attend such schools before they were elected.

“This bill should be lowered by him.” It is a violation of my rights. Most of us have our children attending school in another country before we come here. So it’s not because we’re government employees that we shouldn’t send our children abroad. If you say that because I am now a member of the House of Representatives, I should withdraw my children from the schools where they are being educated, we all agree that the schools are in disarray.

Nicholas Ossai (PDP, Delta) and Toby Okechukwu, the Deputy Minority Leader, were among those who spoke out against the bill (PDP, Enugu).

Mr Ogun, who was visibly displeased with his colleagues, used his right of reply to urge them to read the bill thoroughly in order to comprehend its contents. He stated that regulation is required to address the challenges confronting Nigerian public education.

However, the presiding officer, Deputy Speaker Idris Wase (APC, Plateau), warned him to be careful with his language on the House floor.

Members overwhelmingly rejected the bill when it was put to a vote.

“When I say I want a president of Igbo extraction, I don’t mean someone from Delta or Rivers State or anywhere else safe from a pure southeast Igbo president,” he says.

“Igbo is my first choice.” So, my son, I’ve heard you, I’ve prayed for you, and God will give you whatever you deserve.

“When you defected to APC, I asked why; we’re all fighting for the same cause, but if the PDP, which we the Igbos served, abandons the Igbos 100 percent, then we’ll all abandon the PDP, as I’ve already told them.”

He also praised Umahi for his achievements in Ebonyi State’s infrastructure.

“You have all the qualities,” he said, “and God will protect you and grant you the grace to achieve all your desires in good health and long life.”

In a previous remark, Umahi thanked the elder statesman for his blessings and promised that if given the chance, he would turn around Nigeria’s fortunes.

“If God has mercy on this country, I believe He will not raise a pure professional politician to be Nigeria’s president.” Nigeria requires a business-minded individual who is also familiar with our political environment, as well as someone who can engage effectively.

“It will be very difficult for our country to unite without engagement, without determining what the people’s problems are, and without fairness, equity, and justice.”

“What we don’t realize is that both good and bad leaders are created by God. When God is pleased with the people, He sends them good leaders, but when He is dissatisfied with them, He sends them bad leaders. So, when people criticize leaders, they are criticizing God, so we turn our gaze to God, pleading with God to show mercy on us,” he explained.

Samuel Dare Arayode, a former Sterling Bank employee, was sentenced to ten years in prison by a Tinubu Magistrate’s Court in Lagos Island, Lagos.

He was sentenced for stealing N540, 000 from his employer and for falsifying a Lagos State polytechnic Higher National Diploma Certificate with which he was hired by the bank.

The convict, a resident of the Ajah area of Lagos State, was found guilty and imprisoned by Magistrate Fusikat Olamide after she found him guilty of three counts of stealing and forgery brought against him by the police at the Maroko Division, Lekki, Lagos during a seven-year trial.

According to police, the convict’s journey to prison began in 2014 when his employer audited his account books and discovered that the convict had converted the money customers entrusted in his care to lodge in their accounts to his personal use rather than remitting the money into the bank’s account.

Further investigation by the bank’s management revealed that the Lagos State polytechnic Higher Nation Diploma Certificate he used in his security job with the bank was a forgery.

Arayode was arrested and charged with three counts in front of the court.
The crimes, according to Police Counsel Mr Ben Ekundayo, are punishable under sections 409, 285 (7), and 363 (1) of the Lagos State Criminal Law, 2015.

Arayode was granted bail after pleading not guilty to the charges.

Timaya, a Nigerian singer, has spoken out after being arrested hours after being accused of almost killing a young lady.

The singer was arrested on Thursday morning by security operatives of the Lagos police command after they stormed his home on Wednesday, March 2, 2022, for allegedly hitting a lady in Ikate Lekki, Lagos.

Timaya is said to have fled after noticing what he did, and all attempts by the victim’s sister to contact him were futile, as he also blocked them on Instagram.

According to Osinubi Omowumi, a victim’s sister, the music star allegedly rammed his car into her sister after she confronted him about her car being damaged.

Omowumi went on to accuse the music superstar of injuring her sister severely.

She claimed that all attempts to contact the singer to do the ‘necessary’ were futile, as he went on to block her on all social media platforms.

Timaya told his side of the story on Instagram Live this afternoon, revealing that he had no idea he had hit the lady’s car and had stopped to get her number so he could pay for the damages.

However, after seeing four aggressive men running towards his car, he quickly drove away, and the lady, believing he was attempting to flee, grabbed the side mirror, causing her to fall and sustain injuries.

He insisted that he had no malice toward anyone.

The NDLEA’s charge against Kyari comes on the same day that Nigeria’s Federal Government approved his extradition to the United States (USA).

Yobe bakers say inflation may force a 55 percent increase in bread prices.

0

The Yobe State Bakers Association has announced that bread prices will rise by at least 55 percent in the near future.

Alhaji Manu Isa, the association’s Chairman, said the proposed increase is due to an increase in the general price of baking commodities, among other production costs, in Damaturu, the state capital, on Thursday.

The association raised the price of a loaf of bread by 26% in August 2020 due to “unbearable” baking ingredient costs, according to the association.

Isa pointed out that, in order for members of the association to stay in business and grow their businesses, they must raise bread prices because the prices of most commodities have risen by more than 100 percent with no sign of slowing down.

“The price of flour was N12,000 to N13,000 per 50kg during the last increment, but it has now risen to N22,000 and even N23,000 in some places.”

“The price of yeast, which is an important ingredient in bread making, has increased from N11,000 to N21,000, while another ingredient called improver, which we used to buy for less than N20,000, has increased to N33,000,” he lamented.

He went on to say that bakeries have ceased production, forcing those still in business to raise their prices or risk becoming obsolete.

“We used to have over 90 bakery houses in Damaturu alone, but due to high production costs and insurgency, the number has now dropped to 30, which is very unfortunate,” Alhaji Isa lamented.

He urged the government to provide soft loans to members of the association in order for them to weather the storm.

“This is a business that employs a large number of unemployed youths, but the government appears to have no understanding of this,” he said.

Some Damaturu residents who spoke out about the situation urged the government to intervene by assisting the bakers in any way possible.

according to Tahir Mallam, Gambo Usman, and Mrs Habiba, and any increase would only exacerbate problems for the masses.

Others who rely on bread for breakfast said they would have to find another option because bread would soon be out of reach.

Omowumi went on to say that the singer came dangerously close to killing the victim, and when he was asked to assess the damage, all he asked for was her phone number.

Since then, the victim has been admitted to the hospital, and her sister has shared a video showing the extent of her injuries.

The victim’s car was also damaged, and the sister claims that all attempts to contact Timaya were futile because he continued to block people who contacted him on social media about the incident.
