Buhari Says APC Convention Will Surprise Critics

0

President Muhammadu Buhari has dismissed claims that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will be unable to hold its national convention on March 26 because the party will surprise its critics.

On Sunday, as he answered questions from State House correspondents shortly before departing the Presidential Wing of Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport for London, the president stated this.

According to the Nigerian News Agency (NAN), the president had planned to fly to London from Nairobi, Kenya, after attending the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) 50th anniversary celebrations there on Friday.

“Well, they (critics) should wait and see,” the president said. How did we, as a party, come to take power from the ruling party, which had been in power for so long before us?

“So, we’ve got the capacity; everything’ll be fine.”

On his trip to London, Buhari stated that his absence from the country would have no impact on government operations because the vice-president, who would be assisted by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and his Chief of Staff, would be in charge.

“Well, I can’t say I’m doing everything by myself.” The government is fully represented – the vice president is present, and he is in charge constitutionally while I’m away; the secretary of the government is also present, as is the chief of staff. So there’s no problem,” he explained.

Child Maternal Mortality Rates In Nigeria Surpasses COVID-19 – Experts

The Federal Government has expressed concern about the rising number of deaths among women and children in Nigeria, noting that the country’s child and maternal mortality rates are higher than those of the Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Dr. Salma Anas-Kolo, Director, Department of Family Health, Federal Ministry of Health, stated this in her welcome address at the Rotary Action Group for Reproductive, Maternal, and Child Health’s three-day virtual training for media practitioners.

“On a daily basis, we have many women and children dying, larger than COVID-19,” Dr Anas-Kolo lamented, adding, “We have many women and children dying, larger than COVID-19.” Every year, 40,000 to 50,000 women die as a result of pregnancy and childbirth-related causes, but the majority of these deaths go unnoticed.”
“Each life is important, and every death of a woman or child should be accounted for,” the Director of Family Health said, noting that over 90% of these deaths in both mothers and children under the age of five years are preventable.

She went on to say that the federal government planned to enlist the help of religious leaders with large followings in disseminating information about maternal and newborn health, nutrition, and child spacing in order to improve people’s quality of life and contribute to nation-building.

Nigeria is set to launch its Family Planning 2030 commitment in line with the global movement supporting women’s and girls’ rights to choose whether or not to have children freely and for themselves.

According to her, the launch follows the Federal government’s commitment to family planning provision and uptake, as well as the importance of family planning to meaningful sustainable development.

Professor Emmanuel Adedolapo Lufadeju, National Coordinator, Rotary National Family Planning Campaign (RMCH) Nigeria, spoke about the importance of family planning in improving child survival and population management.

Lufadeju urged the media to cover family planning issues more extensively in order to promote long-term development.

Professor Abubakar Panti, a family health expert, listed available contraceptive methods and criticized Nigeria’s high fertility rate.

“Nigeria is among the ten countries in the world with the highest fertility rate,” he says, adding that “lack of access to contraception contributes to this high fertility rate.”

“A Nigerian woman’s lifetime risk of dying during pregnancy and childbirth is 1 in 22, compared to 1 in 4900 in developed countries.” Nigeria is ranked fourth among the countries with the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. Preventing pregnancy through family planning and contraception prevents maternal death.”

Emefiele: InfraCo to Begin Talks with FG, Lagos, on Expansion of Lekki-Epe Road Infrastructure

0

Mr. Godwin Emefiele, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has promised to work with the Infrastructure Corporation of Nigeria Limited (InfraCo), relevant federal and state government agencies, as well as the private sector, to develop road infrastructure in the Lagos Free Zone to support the growing industrial activities along the Lekki-Epe axis.

He explained that this was necessary due to the expansion of industries in and around the Free Trade Zone, particularly Dangote Refineries and Tolaram Group, which have attracted economic activity and created heavy traffic.

Emefiele made the remarks during a tour of Tolaram Group’s industries in the Lagos Free Zone, which occupy 850,000 acres of land and have a $2.1 billion industrial investment.

With the active collaboration of the federal and state governments, he claims that InfraCo will decongest the environs of the Lagos Free Zone by assisting with road construction.

He specifically stated that the establishment of the Lagos Free Zone will aid in the alleviation of the Apapa-Tincan Island port congestion.

Emefiele also stated that the apex bank would work with the federal and state governments to determine how InfraCo could ensure cargo evacuation from the port area, which he described as a major problem.

He claimed that the CBN had raised about N23 billion to fund road infrastructure so that cargo could be evacuated smoothly from the port.

“The whole idea is that with this Lagos Free Zone Port, we should be able to see a complete decongestion of Apapa and Tin Can Island Port simply by diverting traffic away from Apapa.”

“We also fear that the situation will worsen with the single road we have, which is the Lagos-Epe-Lekki road, which is already congested with traffic, even with Dangote Refinery.” Yes, it’s something we’re seeing, and I’m here today because I’ve been to Dangote Refinery several times and know how long it takes to drive there by road.

“What I’m trying to say is that we’ve identified the issue.” Fortunately, InfraCo is chaired by the CBN; the InfraCo board has been formally constituted; InfraCo has a CEO; and I will be calling on InfraCo to begin the engagement as soon as we leave this meeting. I’ll also be working with the Lagos state government and the federal government through the Federal Ministry of Works to see what can be done about evacuating out of Lagos, as well as how we can decongest traffic for those who live near this axis.

“I want to reassure you that this is something that will be addressed.” “This would be the middle of a long-term strategy,” he explained.

The governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) urged entrepreneurs and business owners to take advantage of the apex bank’s various interventions, saying that the CBN was keen on promoting industrialisation through long-term single-digit loans.

“For any entrepreneur wishing to do business in Nigeria, we will provide both Naira and dollar funding, and I will always advise against taking out dollar loans, especially if your revenue stream is in naira.” Take out low-cost Naira loans with low-interest rates and a two-year grace period. I doubt you’d ever come across something like this again. I always encourage people to take advantage of it because it is available, especially since we want to drive industrialisation in Nigeria and resurrect the manufacturing sector.

“We would support not only the Tolaram Group, the Dangote Group, or the BUAs; we would give you all the support you need if you mean well and want to do business in Nigeria,” he explained.

The Tolaram Group, according to Emefiele, has made immediate plans to evacuate their products through the port to Ikorodu, Festac, and Warri via trucks, which will not cause road congestion for the time being. Road expansion, he claims, is a much-needed investment that will also help with exports.

“We are pleased that this port infrastructure has arrived; it will address our problem of ease of doing business,” he said. One of our issues with ease of doing business, or in this case, ease of export, is that when Nigerians want to export, they can do so through the Lagos Tin Can or Lagos Apapa ports. People prefer to transport their products and goods by road to neighboring countries and then ship them out of those countries, implying that Nigeria loses the benefit of being referred to as “exported from Nigeria.”

“I believe with this port, and we will be engaging them, I’m glad the Customs and the Nigerian Ports Authority are involved; we would also seek to work with the Lagos Free Zone by having a dedicated export desk that would make it easier for goods to be exported out of this port.” That is a very important issue that we must address because, again, in a selfish manner, we require foreign exchange. We earn foreign exchange if we export, and I’m going to start working with them to ensure that the Lagos Free Zone is designated as an export zone,” he added.

“Certainly, over N100 billion has gone from CBN intervention under CRR or through agriculture credit route to the Tolaram Group,” Emefiele said when asked how much the CBN has helped the group. Remember that this project costs around $2 billion, or about N1 trillion, and N100 billion is only 10% of that. As a result, we’ve also planted a seed. At least N1 trillion has been invested in this project, and we have contributed about N100 billion, or about 10%,” he said.

The CBN governor also stated that the bank would do everything possible to make the environment conducive to the growth of companies and businesses.

“So, we’re looking into how we can ensure that the policy regulations are reviewed; we have concerns about how free trade zones operate in terms of tax exemptions, duty free exemptions, and other things.”

“We’d like to collaborate with you to see how we can establish a clear line of demarcation between companies that operate as free trade zones or in free trade zones and those that will not.”

“However, a company may want to operate as a free trade zone while also operating in the opposite direction. As a result, we need to define how this will work so that revenue is not lost,” he said.

In an IED explosion, five Niger soldiers were killed.

The defence ministry said on Sunday that five soldiers were killed by a mine in Niger’s southwestern Torodi region, where jihadist attacks using improvised explosive devices (IEDs) are becoming more common.

Three soldiers were injured in the blast, which occurred on Friday when an army patrol vehicle collided with an IED, according to a statement broadcast on national television by the ministry.

The troops were part of the Niya anti-jihadist force, which was established in February near the Burkina Faso border.

Despite the deployment of thousands of anti-jihadist troops and the imposition of a state of emergency, Islamist groups have targeted western Niger on a regular basis since 2017.

In Torodi and neighboring Gotheye, IED attacks on the army have become increasingly common.

Both are in the “three borders” flashpoint zone between Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali, which is home to jihadist groups such as the Islamic State of Greater Sahara.

According to security sources, the jihadists have recruited a large number of young people in Niger, particularly in areas near the Burkina Faso border, where they have “established several logistics bases.”

On its southeastern border with Nigeria, where Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province operate, Niger, the world’s poorest country according to the UN’s Human Development Index, is fighting another jihadist insurgency.

President Mohamed Bazoum claims that 12,000 of the country’s soldiers are dedicated to anti-jihadist operations on a full-time basis.

Bamidele Adeleke, a cousin of Davido, a popular Nigerian singer, wished the singer’s father a happy birthday on Sunday.

Dele posted a photo of his uncle, Adedeji Adeleke, on his Instagram page, saying that despite their differences, he still admired Davido’s father.

Dele also prayed for the birthday boy in his post, asking God to grant him grace.

Buhari’s APC Chairmanship Candidate Receives N10 Million Donation

Senator Abdullahi Adamu of Nasarawa State has received a ten million naira donation to help him campaign for the APC national chairmanship.

According to our reporter President Muhammadu Buhari has endorsed the former state governor for the position.

Dr Kassim Muhammed Kassim, the chairman of the Council of All Progressives Congress (APC) Stakeholders in Nasarawa State, said in a statement on Sunday that the group had raised N10 million from North-Central stakeholders to buy nomination and expression of interest forms for Adamu.

Kassim told journalists in Lafia that the donation was made to show solidarity with Adamu and to say “thank you” for establishing high institutions in the state during his time as governor, which allowed them to pursue higher education.

He urged those who claimed to be supporters of the president but disagreed with his decision to reconsider.

Meanwhile, Dr Abdulmuminin Kabir Usman, the Emir of Katsina, has revealed why he is backing Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), for the presidency.

Usman said he is backing Tinubu for president in 2023 because the presidential candidate helped him in a variety of ways when he was a district head.

Given their long-standing relationship, the monarch said he will contribute to the former Lagos governor’s campaign and advise him as needed.

Last Friday, he revealed this when he received members of the Arewa Organizations Movement for Asiwaju, led by Senator Abu Ibrahim, at his Katsina palace.

“We will look into whatever movement he is involved in, and we will support where necessary and correct where necessary,” he said. Tinubu was governor when I was district head, and he has helped me in numerous ways. Tell me why I should disown him now that I am on the throne and he is running for president.

“So, Tinubu, the man you brought here, he is a son of the soil, and he has done a lot for me.” I was in Lagos three weeks ago for the first time since 1967, and I saw how the city has changed, and I came to the conclusion that Lagos holds all of the country’s wealth.”

SERAP warns Buhari to investigate refinery spending or face litigation.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd. ), has been asked by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project to direct the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar Malami, SAN, and anti-corruption agencies to investigate the spending on the country’s four refineries.

The organization also requested that the president order an investigation into allegations of corruption and mismanagement of public funds budgeted for refinery rehabilitation, operation, and maintenance since 1999.
If the president does not comply, SERAP has threatened to sue him, according to a statement released on Sunday.

According to the statement, SERAP’s deputy director, Kolawole Oluwadare, wrote this to Buhari and Malami in a letter dated March 5, 2022.

“Investigating and prosecuting allegations of corruption and mismanagement in the refinery spending would be entirely consistent with constitutional guarantees and international standards,” the letter reads in part.
It could also help your government’s anti-corruption efforts gain public support.

“Alleged
corruption and mismanagement in the oil sector, as well as the importation and distribution of dirty fuel and long-term fuel scarcity, amount to a fundamental violation of Nigerians’ constitutional and international human rights obligations, depriving them of economic opportunities and subjecting them to cruel and degrading treatment.”

“We would appreciate it if the suggested actions were taken within 7 days of receiving and/or publishing this letter.
If we have not received a response by then, SERAP will consider taking legal action to compel your government to comply with our request in the public interest.

“SERAP also urges you to direct the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to jointly track and monitor public funds spent to rehabilitate, operate, and maintain the country’s refineries.

“SERAP is concerned that fuel scarcity in several parts of the country has put many Nigerians in difficult economic and social circumstances, preventing them from developing their skills and realizing their potential.”

2023: Group to hold one-million-woman rally for Funmi Ayinke

0

As the 2023 presidential election edges closer, the clamour for Nigeria’s first female president has continued to gather momentum.

Further pushing this agenda are a group of concerned women across the country who have tipped renowned philanthropist, Amb Funmi Ayinke for the job.

Led by its convener Princess Uju Chukwu, the group have pledged to hold a one-million-woman rally in solidarity with their fellow woman.

According to a statement signed by Princess Uju, as the name implies, women in their numbers from the 36 States of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory will participate in the mass action.

She said the women are united in a common course; a female presidency and Ayinke as their preferred choice.

Uju said Ayinke was selected from a strong list that consisted of nine other distinguished women who have not only excelled in their professional careers but shown competence, capacity and capability to govern.

Of the 10, she noted that Ayinke had an edge due to her philanthropy, humanitarian and selfless services.

“If it has happened in Liberia, Malawi and Tanzania, we believe Nigeria is ripe for a female president. Now is the perfect time,” Uju said.

“Women are no longer begging to be included anymore, no. Rather they want to take over the helms of affairs.

“Ayinke is our choice. She ticks all the boxes; young, visionary and selfless. She is an accomplished professional who has carved a niche for herself in the engineering sector and would definitely transform the nation if she emerges president.

“Yes, she wasn’t the only choice. There were over 50. We narrowed the list to 10 and ultimately Ayinke was picked by the overwhelming majority of our selection committee members.

“At the last polls, it was gathered that over 40 per cent of the actual voters were women. However, this isn’t reflected in the representation that we get”.

Uju, therefore, urged other women to join the movement, noting that this is for the future of their daughters.

She added that if these over 40 per cent of the country’s voters can settle for a fellow woman, then Ayinke can emerge.

Uju, however, appealed to Ayinke to publicly declare her interest in the presidency.

She also urged females from all works of life to join the one-million-woman rally.

Jurgen Klopp, the manager of Liverpool, has confirmed that he will leave the club in 2024.

Klopp claims that he will only consider staying if he has the energy to do so.

Under the former Borussia Dortmund manager, the Reds have also won the Champions League and Premier League.

Klopp’s current contract was signed in December 2019, but there will be no further extensions as of now.

“It’s important if I have the energy levels for it.” I enjoy what I do, but there must be something else out there in the world besides constantly thinking about extremely talented, attractive, and delightfully nice players! But I don’t give it much thought.

“I’m bursting with energy, but I need to double-check that” (in the future). I don’t want to be tired and think to myself, “Wow!” Why is everyone so concerned about what’s going on in the world when I couldn’t care less?” Klopp remarked.
