Breaking: Abba Kyari, Disgraced ‘Supercop, Six Others Appear In Abuja Court Over Alleged Drug Trafficking

0

DCP Abba Kyari, the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, has arrived at a Federal High Court in Abuja with six others.

On Monday, the Nigerian government announced that Kyari would be charged with eight counts of drug trafficking.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) will arraign Kyari and six others before Justice Emeka Nwite of a Federal High Court (FHC) in Abuja.

Sunday J. Ubia, Bawa James, Simon Agirigba, and John Nuhu are among the other defendants in the FHC/ABJ/57/2022 charge. The defendants are police intelligence response team members (IRT).

Two alleged drug traffickers, Chibunna Patrick Umeibe and Emeka Alphonsus Ezenwanne, were arrested at Enugu’s Akanu Ibiam International Airport.

Kyari and the four other police officers were charged with conspiracy, obstruction, and dealing in 17.55 kilograms of cocaine by Joseph Sunday, the NDLEA director of prosecution and legal services.

Kyari and his men were also accused of tampering with 21.25 kilograms of cocaine.

Umeibe and Ezenwanne were accused of conspiring with others in the country to bring in 21.35 kilograms of cocaine.

Meanwhile, Inibehe Effiong, a human rights lawyer, has urged the agency to postpone filing charges against Kyari, the disgraced police chief.

After attempting to bribe an NDLEA official with $61,000 to facilitate the release of seized cocaine, the suspended police chief was remanded in custody.

Kyari is also wanted by the US government for allegedly committing wire fraud, money laundering, and identity theft.

Effiong stated that arraigning Kyari on drug-related charges would have an impact on his extradition to the United States.

The NDLEA, on the other hand, announced on Monday that it had filed charges against Kyari and others on February 28.

The South-East Council of Traditional Rulers and Representatives of Igbo Archbishops and Bishops have expressed their displeasure with the South-handling East’s of insecurity.

In a communique obtained on Monday, religious and traditional rulers expressed their displeasure.

According to them, the presidential administration failed to respond to a letter requesting dialogue as a means of resolving the region’s insecurity.

They also chastised regional governors for failing to respond to calls for dialogue.

The group urged the president and governors of the states to grant audience as soon as possible.

requested.

“Confronted with the escalation of insecurity in the South-East, and concerned that those in authority were failing to stem the tide of violence, especially in the run-up to the Gubernatorial Elections in Anambra State, the Council issued a public appeal on Sunday, 30th October, 2021, for a de-escalation and suspension of the IPOB sit-at-home order,” the communique read. We held numerous behind-the-scenes meetings with all relevant stakeholders.

“On November 3, 2021, the Joint Body wrote a letter to the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR), requesting an extension of the deadline.”

“The purpose of the request was to dialogue and explore avenues for peace-building, to defuse tension in the South East, and to ensure that it did not result in a grave socio-economic burden on our people,” said the audience. Further delay or inaction on this request, the joint Body fears, may have the unintended consequence of giving credence, albeit incorrectly, to the belief held by some groups in the region that restoring peace and stability is not the primary goal.

The federal government’s goal

“In the same vein, genuine efforts to dialogue with South East Governors made through the Chairman, South East Governors’ Forum have hit a brick wall so far.” When taken as a whole, the shuttered silence invites suspicion and, if left unattended, foreshadows doom.

“It’s been three months since I wrote and delivered the letter to the President’s office. The White House has not acknowledged receipt of the letter or responded to it.

“It’s perplexing that the President and the Governors of the South East appear to be ignoring the proven value of dialogue and consensus-building in resolving the region’s security issues.

“As leaders who are constantly required by our duty to interact with the public, the Joint Body wishes to confirm the Federal Government’s sincerity and commitment, in particular, to finding a long-term solution to the security crisis.”

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma has urged Nigerians to vote in 2023 for a credible presidential candidate.

Although Uzodinma believes that zoning the presidency to the Southeast would be beneficial, the 1999 constitution does not allow for this.

He urged Nigerians to vote for credible presidential candidates based on merit rather than zoning when casting their ballots.

On the sidelines of the first plenary of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria in Abuja on Sunday, Uzodinma revealed this to journalists.

“Of course, it will be a good idea to zone the Presidency to the Southeast,” the governor says, “but in my best interest, the process is what we should be looking at.” Tribe or place of origin are not a factor in our democracy’s books (1999 Constitution).

“So, in my good conscience and moral instinct, all I say is that Nigerians should vote in a representative manner so that everyone gets a sense of what the presidency is in reality, but beyond that, and most importantly, is the need for merit and competence.”

United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, Africa’s Global Bank, has announced an impressive performance in key financial parameters in its 2021 full year report, which ended on December 31, 2021.

The Tier-1 bank reported a 20.3 percent increase in profit before tax (PBT) to N153.1 billion in its audited results submitted to the Nigerian Exchange on Friday, compared to N127.3 billion at the end of the previous year.

Similarly, profit after tax (PAT) increased by 8.7% in 2021 to N118.7 billion, up from N109.2 billion in 2020.

Despite the difficult business environment and slow economic recovery in most of its operating countries, gross earnings increased by 7% to N660.2 billion at the end of the 2020 financial year, compared to N616.8 billion at the end of the previous year.

Total assets followed the same upward trend, reaching an all-time high of N8.5 trillion in the year under review, up from N7.7 trillion in 2020.

This is the first time the bank’s assets have surpassed N8 trillion, indicating sound resource management decisions and a relentless pursuit of customer deposits.

According to the report, net loans increased by 7.7% to N2.8 trillion, while customer deposits increased by 12.2% to N6.4 trillion, compared to N5.7 trillion in the same period in 2020.

This is due to increased customer confidence, improved customer experience, achievements from the ongoing business transformation program, and the expansion of its retail banking franchise.

Operating income increased by 10% to N443 billion from N403 billion the previous year, while operating expenses remained unchanged at N279 billion.

For the fiscal year ending December 31, 2021, the Global Bank proposed a final dividend of 80 kobo per ordinary share of 50 kobo.

The final dividend, which is subject to shareholder approval at the bank’s Annual General Meeting, will bring the total dividend for the year to 100 kobo, after the bank paid a 20 kobo interim dividend earlier in the year.

Kennedy Uzoka, Group Managing Director/CEO, commented on the results, saying that despite the tight and challenging operating environment, UBA continues to deliver significant results.

“The year 2021 can best be described as a year of global recovery,” he said, “as supply chains recover from the devastating disruptions suffered in 2020.”

As a result, UBA’s top line increased by 7% to N660 billion (USD1.56 billion), with profit before tax (PBT) of N153.1 billion, up 20.3 percent from the previous year. Net Loans and Advances increased by 7.7% to N2.8 trillion, with a focus on resilient economic sectors such as oil and gas, agriculture, and manufacturing. Customers’ deposits increased by 12.2%, crossing the N6 trillion mark to N6.4 trillion.”

The GMD stated that the bank’s portfolio quality, as well as the bank’s credit risk management frameworks and policies, remain the bedrock of the bank’s positive results over the years, and that the current performance highlights UBA’s relentless customer focus and leverage on its key strategic levers – People, Process, and Technology.

“In the future, I’m particularly enthusiastic about our ongoing Enterprise Transformation Program, which aims to improve the bank’s process agility, service delivery, and customer experience.” We’re also investing heavily in cutting-edge technology and cyber security to stay ahead of the curve with our innovative digital banking offerings, as well as retooling and retooling our human resources to compete and win in an ever-changing and evolving landscape. The bank will be able to maintain respectable top and bottom-line growth in the medium to long term as a result of this, according to the GMD.

UBA’s Group Chief Financial Official, Ugo Nwaghodoh, echoed the GMD’s remarks, saying the bank has shown resilience once again. Despite the slow pace of economic recovery that characterized 2021, it achieved significant growth and strengthened its balance sheet.

“The bank was able to protect its net interest margin and achieve a downward moderation of Cost of funds (CoF) by 70 basis points to 2.2 percent from 2.9 percent in the prior year thanks to active and diligent asset and liability management.”

According to him, the group’s capital adequacy ratio of 24.9 percent was well above the regulatory minimum and reflected a strong ability to grow the business. “By the end of 2020, the Group’s non-performing loan ratio had dropped to 3.6 percent from 4.7 percent. This demonstrates the strength of UBA’s loan portfolio, even as the bank continues to pursue its goal of lowering the Cost-to-Income ratio, which was 63.0 percent at the end of the year.”

Nwaghodoh went on to say that the bank made more progress in growing its business and gaining market share across its pan-African operations, with the region accounting for 63.2 percent of the Group’s profitability, up from 55.4 percent in 2020; loans and advances, as well as deposits, were up 14.5 percent and 27.3 percent, respectively, from the previous year.

The soldiers, who arrived in different trucks, also demolished checkpoints set up along the Ibaa-Obelle Elele town road by some police officers and residents of the named communities.

Meanwhile, some residents of the community have fled the area because they are afraid.

Workers Commence 7 Days Warning Strike Over Low Pay

0

The Niger state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has slammed Governor Abubarkar Sani Bello’s administration for the continued loss of lives and property to Boko-Haram, insisting that no excuse is acceptable for his failure to provide good leadership.

Among other things, the workers want the Ministry of Local Government to stop all financial transactions with the joint local government funds that are not backed by the Niger State House of Assembly’s instrument of legislation; Section 3 of the Principal Law as Amended 2001.

Labour unions deliberated on key issues affecting the state at an expanded State Executive Council (SEC) meeting held at Labour House, IBB Road, Minna, and resolved that no excuse is tenable from a Governor who is thought to be well versed in the challenges facing the state before contesting election and then begins to make excuses after winning election.

The state NLC Chairman, Comrade Yakubu Garba, signed a communiqué at the end of the enlarged SEC urging Governor Bello’s administration to focus more on security by stepping up action to end the siege by the four major terror groups hiding in the state.

“Despite the existence of seven well-grounded military formations across the three senatorial zones, namely: Army Barracks Bida (Zone A), Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) Minna (Zone B), and the Nigeria Airforce Base Minna (Zone B), Minna Military Cantonment (Zone B), the NLC is very concerned that security of lives and properties appears to have overwhelmed the state security apparatus.”

“The 221 Battalion New Bussa (Zone C), Air Weapon Training School New Bussa (Zone C), Forte Nagwamatse Army Barracks in Kontagora (Zone C), in addition to the almost 100 percent LGA coverage by Police and NSCDC formations, a number of Mobile Police bases and non-conventional security formations like the local Vigilantes,” according to the communiqué.

Apart from the attacks that have left hundreds of people homeless, the session discussed other important issues affecting the state in general, such as the lingering welfare of workers, and implored the state government to step up to administrative responsibilities, according to the communiqué signed by state NLC Chairman, Comrade Yakubu Garba.

The NLC sympathizes with the families of slain security personnel who died in the line of duty, as well as citizens who have suffered the same fate at the hands of deadly terror groups such as Ali Kawaje, Yello Jambros, Kachalla Halilu, and Bello Turji.

Labour leaders are also concerned about the resurgence of insecurity, which has resulted in the emergence of formal and informal refugee camps or Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in many of the state’s Local Government Areas.

Nonetheless, the labor leaders urged civil servants and Nigerlites in general to remain vigilant at all times and to cooperate with security agencies, particularly when it comes to providing local intelligence on how to end the terror groups’ reign of terror in the state.

While attributing the failures to a lack of real-time inter-agency collaborations, synergy, coordination, and intelligence gathering and sharing mechanisms, the state will continue to be mired in insecurity as terror groups boldly move around.

It is critical that the state government act quickly. “Why are armed bandits, Boko-Haram, and ISWAP killings continuing unabated?” Why are existing security formations in the three senatorial zones waiting to respond until settlements and communities are attacked?

“In Niger state, armed banditry and terrorism have taken on a dangerous dimension. Rural areas that previously provided support to cities through agricultural ingenuity have now become deserted. Terrorism has taken lives and livelihoods that cannot be measured.”

“For emphasis, we are aware that terrorist attacks have left Munya, Shiroro, Rafi, Paikoro and Wushishi, Rijau, Mashegu, Magama, Mariga, and most recently, Lavun desolate,” the communiqué continued. Many farmers have been killed, while others have fled their farms in search of safety.”

Workers have not received the attention they deserve, so it has been decided that “all affiliate unions of the NLC and TUC in Niger state are directed to proceed on a seven-day warning strike beginning at 12 midnight on Sunday, March 6, 2022.”

Aside from paying more attention to workers’ welfare, the communiqué suggests that Governor Bello’s administration restructure the entire security architecture to ensure that communities are secure enough for citizens to return to their ancestral homes, farmlands, and businesses immediately.

“The Ministry for Local Government and the Joint Account Committee’s position in administering the content of FAAC redistribution, which resulted in the unfortunate payment of salaries on a percentage basis to staff of some LGAs was misleading and illegal,” according to the NLC. This, according to the NLC, contradicts the existing legislation of the State House of Assembly Joint Account Laws; Principal Law Section 3 as Amended 2001 and must be stopped immediately.

The communiqué also expressed surprise at the Governor’s lack of concern for the plight of primary school students and teachers who have been at home for the past eight weeks in protest of the illegal payment of salaries on a percentage basis, despite several requests for him to intervene to stop the trend.
