NYSC seeks partnership with Naseni on entrepreneurial skills for corps members

0

The National Youth Service Corps has expressed interest in accessing technical support of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) in the area of entrepreneurial skill up scaling for Corps members.

The Director-General, Major General Shuaibu Ibrahim, made this known on Thursday when he paid a courtesy visit to the agency.
Ibrahim, who commended the Management and Staff of NASENI for what he described as their wonderful job, noted that lots of opportunities would be available for Corps members from the Agency’s activities.
He averred that Nigerian youths were innovative adding that if provided with the enabling environment, their enormous potentials could be harnessed for accelerated development of the country.
The Director-General recalled the contributions of Corps members to the overall national efforts to contain the COVID-19 pandemic through the production and distribution of face masks, hand sanitizers, and liquid soap as well as fabrication of items and devices such as sanitizers, dispensers, disinfection chamber, and body temperature checker.
He said the NYSC Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme was introduced to empower Corps members for self-employment and wealth creation, adding that many ex-trainees of the programme had established their own businesses and provided jobs for members of their host communities.
Ibrahim thanked the NASENI Management for the opportunities given to Corps members serving in the Agency and went on to propose a partnership under which more Corps members would be posted with the view of advancing their skills.
Earlier in a welcome address, the Executive Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive of NASENI Professor Mohammed Sani Haruna said the agency’s mandate was in the area of capital goods research, production and reverse engineering, adding that it had made interventions in various sectors.
Haruna explained that the agency operates through several mono-mandate institutes located in different parts of the country.
The Executive Vice-Chairman listed various products made locally by the agency including solar panels, small hydro-power turbines, smart prepaid meter, power transformer, motorcycle, cargo tricycle, ultra-light helicopter, unmanned aerial vehicle and agricultural processing machines, amongst others.
He remarked that President Muhammadu Buhari had repositioned the organization for better service delivery.
During the visit, the Director-General was taken on a guided tour of facilities at the agency.

Malami: No confusion on Abba Kyari’s extradition, cocaine trafficking trial

0

The Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has stated that the extradition processes and cocaine-trafficking accusations filed against Abba Kyari, a suspended deputy commissioner of police, are free of any dispute or controversy.

Mr Malami made the remarks after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, which he addressed to State House media.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency filed cocaine-related charges against Mr Kyari before the Federal High Court in Abuja, raising fears that the drive to extradite him to the United States might be thwarted (NDLEA).

Section 3 (6) of the Extradition Act, which prevents the extradition of a fugitive facing multiple criminal accusations in Nigeria, is at the root of the issues.
“(A) A fugitive criminal who has been charged with an offence under Nigerian law or any portion thereof, other than the offence for which his surrender is sought; or

“(B) Who is serving a term imposed by a Nigerian court in respect of any such offence shall not be surrendered until he has been freed, whether by acquittal, the completion of his sentence, or otherwise.”

However, Mr Malami characterised the concerns about the anticipated impact of the cocaine-trafficking charges on the extradition move as a misperception, without addressing the exact implications of the statutory requirements on the move to extradite Mr Kyari.

“There is no confusion,” he continued, “but there is a big misunderstanding or possibly malice on the side of people, perhaps journalists who have not taken the time to study a subject, grasp it, and respond appropriately.”

Before the NDLEA charged him with cocaine-related offenses in February, the US government had requested Mr Kyari’s extradition for his parts in a $1.1 million fraud orchestrated by a former Nigerian Instagram celebrity, Ramon Abbas, alias Hushpuppi.
Despite the Extradition Act’s obvious provisions and the possibility that the defense would use the NDLEA case to dismiss extradition proceedings, the AGF insisted on Wednesday that there was no conflict between the two instances.

“What I’m saying is that there’s nothing quite like confusion, nothing quite like conflict, and there are two unique and separate circumstances,” he explained.

“So the decision whether a person should be extradited or not is a function, or perhaps a multilateral function, inclusive of the international community that makes a request, the Office of the Attorney General… request, and the judiciary to which the request is presented for review, analysis, and decision,” he continued.

“It’s being processed at the judicial level,” Mr replied when asked about the extradition proceedings.

The remark appears to be an attempt to blame the judiciary, given that the court may have to terminate the extradition proceedings if Mr Kyari’s legal team brings up the pending NDLEA cocaine case.

It also reinforces concerns about a conspiracy idea that the NDLEA case was launched in haste in order to halt extradition proceedings and keep Mr Kyari in Nigeria, where his trial may drag on for years.

Response that is non-committal
Mr Malami was evasive in his response to a query about the impact of the cocaine accusations on the extradition case.
“You can have hundreds of cases sitting in court relating to a single individual,” the AGF stated when asked about the legal implications of placing the illicit dealing in cocaine accusations above the extradition case.

“So that is the situation, and as you are aware, depending on the volume, dimensions, features, and idiosyncrasies of the case, you may have a criminal case pending before a state high court and another pending before a federal court.” “I’m hoping it’s clear.”

He went on to differentiate between the extradition case and the cocaine-related matter, but did not say if the extradition procedures would be halted.

“And then, while this (contact with the US) was going on and the request for extradition was being evaluated,” he continued, “another case involving the NDLEA came in, and this time it was a local case with no international dimension.”

“You have two completely separate and independent scenarios – one international in dimension and the other local,” he continued, “therefore your idea of conflict does not occur.”

He chastised journalists for the “misconception” created by the situation, accusing them of “publishing incidents out of context without caring to comprehend the genuine provisions, dimensions, and features of a case.”

“What I’m saying is that there’s nothing like confusion, nothing like conflict, and there’s two unique and separate circumstances,” he continued.

Further investigation into the alleged fraud
Mr Malami further stated that Mr Kyari’s suspected involvement in the Hushpuppi fraud case had yet to be cleared by his office.

Mr Malami was quoted as saying that his latest legal advice to the police was not intended to exonerate Mr Kyari.

He called the investigation a work in progress.

DCP Abba Kyari is a suspended and embattled police officer.
DCP Abba Kyari is a suspended and embattled police officer.
The investigation report was sent to Mr Malami’s office for evaluation “to assess whether there is a need for enhancement of inquiry as it relates to some critical parts of the charge,” he said.

“It is from this backdrop viewpoint that you must analyze what happened in the case of Abba Kyari in its whole. Allegations were made, investigations were undertaken, and then requests for more investigation enhancements were made by the Office of the Attorney General in order to cover all bases and make an educated conclusion one way or the other.

“As a result, while this dialogue between the Attorney General’s Office and the police is continuing, it is always a work in progress and never a conclusive position.” So that is what I can tell you with certainty: an impartial request for a probe was made.

“An interim investigation report was provided to the attorney general’s office, and the attorney general recommended that the investigation be further enhanced, highlighting some areas where further inquiry is required.”

Socketing to centre is not a legal reason for defection – legal expert

Joseph Oloko, a Calabar-based legal expert, has stated that socketing to the center is not a valid cause for defection.

Oloko stated this in a Calabar interview in response to the country’s recent court injunction against desertion.

The legal expert also praised Justice Inyang Ekwo’s decision of the Abuja Federal High Court.

He stated unequivocally that the judge got it exactly correct and that the decision is inviolable.

“Socketing to the center is not a legitimate justification for defection,” he says.

“The clause of Section 109 of the constitution comes into play when you desire to defect as a legislator.

“It explains how you must deviate.” There must be division at the national level of your party for it to succeed.

“At the time they defected, the PDP was a fairly calm, non-divisive party, and Uche Secondus, the national chairman, was performing well.”

“They indicated they were socketing to the center when they defected,” he continued, “but socketing to the center is not one of the prerequisites listed in Section 109 for defecting.”

“It is apparent that Justice Ekwo’s judgement is highly sacred,” he stated of the current Federal High Court verdict.

“People talk about Section 308, which grants immunity, and they bring up Atiku Abubakar’s case, but I’d like to explain how the immunity was obtained. Isn’t it the election that gave them immunity? He inquired.

He further emphasized that the PDP as a whole has tens of thousands of members, and that although though one of them is the party’s leader, his rights are the same as those of any other member.

Adamu Aliyu: Youths gradually reclaiming their proper position in politics

In this interview with MUHAMMAD TANKO SHITTU, Adamu Aliyu, PhD, an aspirant for the position of North Central Zonal Youth Leader in the All Progressives Congress (APC), expresses optimism that the convention will place on March 26, 2022, and discusses many topics.
Excerpts:
The APC has set a date for its national convention, but after two postponements, how practical is the March 26 date?
The APC, as the ruling party with millions of members, is making preparations to hold the convention as planned. The fact that our scheduled convention was canceled does not rule out the possibility of a successful event. I believe the APC’s national leadership is taking its time to plan a convention that would generate not just credible but also long-lasting leadership in our party. I am optimistic, and it is clear that the convention will take place as planned, especially because our national leader, President Muhammadu Buhari, has stated that there would be no further postponements.
The lack of a consensual candidate for the chairmanship and the presidential candidate’s zoning are big roadblocks to the convention. Do you believe it’ll go smoothly? I believe that issues such as the ones we are facing in the APC are normal in any democratic context. The fact that many well-known and experienced figures in our country’s democracy are vying to be the APC’s national chairman is sufficient proof that the party is still very much on the ground and committed to good governance and true democracy. Even though the constitution of our great party stipulates that an election be held, it is also promoting and advancing consensus as a gentle way to arrive at who becomes the national chairman. All of the national chairmanship aspirants are persons with the competences, capabilities, and experiences that are required to lead the party, but it is not possible for all of them to be at the same time, and even though the constitution of our great party stipulates that an election be held, it is also promoting and advancing consensus as a gentle Thank God, even President Buhari supports the consensus method, and we are looking to him to steer us in the right way, so it will be a simple task, and we will prove our opponents incorrect at the end of it all. We’ll cross over on the topic of which zone to propose a presidential candidate for the 2023 general election when the convention final takes place, which, insha’ Allah, will go through without a hitch. We are only allowed to do one thing at a time.
When zonal congresses have yet to be held, how confident are you that the national convention will be held?

Everything happens in stages; the party’s constitution stipulates that zonal congresses must be held prior to the national convention; a date has been set for zonal congress, and I am confident that it will be held.
Mind you, I’m running for the role of zonal youth leader for the North-Central zone, and I can assure you that the congress will go off without a hitch.
You wanted to be nominated by the APC to represent Bassa/Jos-North Federal Constituency in the February 2022 bye-primary election, and now you want to be the Zonal Youth Leader. What made you want to do it in the first place? Yes, I wanted to be nominated for the recent bye-election in the Bassa/Jos-North Federal Constituency, but I was defeated in the party primary, but that is not the end of the story for me. My earlier quest as a youth was driven by a slew of requests from my constituency, with the majority of youths wanting me to run for the federal constituency of Bassa/Jos-North, and after I failed to do so, they approached me again and requested that I run for the zonal youth leader to represent the North Central zone, and after extensive consultation, I had no choice but to heed their calls. It is not enough to sit back and criticize someone in a leadership position; it is also sufficient to try to be there so that you can contribute to the advancement of good leadership. We have a lot to contribute to reshaping our country as youth, and I believe that possibilities like these will no longer be allowed to pass us by without a fight, and I am hopeful and convinced that we will triumph.
What difference does it make whether you survive or not?
The first thing they should expect from us is teamwork; for the first time, the youth are vying for the position of national youth leader; I, too, am a youth, so you can see that we are vying for our rightful places in the party’s affairs; this suggests that we will win some significant elective positions in the general elections of 2023. We will have a good and exceptional leadership influence at both the zonal and national levels, and we will do so by consulting with our peers on a regular basis. Without a leadership position, I have been supporting many young people’s political ambitions; it is clear that many of our contemporaries have benefited from our support as they pursue their educational goals, and it is our hope that we will use the zonal position to further the genuine cause of the youth. We have a good plan in place to ensure that the kids receive the attention they deserve, not just by paying attention to their predicament, but also by ensuring that the youth are included in decision-making at all levels of government.

What do you think should be done to make the goal of electing youths in the 2023 elections a reality, rather than just positions inside the party? Nigerian youngsters are talented; we have all of the necessary capacity and capabilities to produce effective government; all we need is encouragement to do so, and we will show that we can do it better. In my opinion, we have previously failed to pursue our goal with complete seriousness and dedication, but we are now doing so correctly. For the first time in the PDP’s history, a young man has assumed the position of national youth leader; today, we are pursuing a similar cause in the APC, and we will continue to push until we are able to move in the correct path. We will work strategically to ensure that the youth receive gubernatorial, state, and national assembly tickets in the upcoming general elections, in addition to gaining national posts at party levels. We will work together to achieve this since we are the registered majority of our respective political parties, an advantage we have previously failed to capitalize on. Do you think Governor Mai Mala Buni’s committee is doing a good job guiding the APC? Knowing the state of the party previous to the formation of the Governor Mai Mala Buni-led extra-ordinary caretaker committee, every sane and reasonable member of the APC will be satisfied with the choice that resulted in the formation of the committee. Leadership comes with a lot of responsibility, and everyone is fallible, but the Buni-led committee is doing an excellent job for the APC’s overall advancement.

Buhari apologizes to citizens for difficulty caused by petrol, electricity shortages

0

Following chronic shortages of petroleum goods and electricity supply, President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed heartfelt condolences for the difficulty given to inhabitants of the country.

In a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by his media adviser, Garba Shehu, the President stated that the issue of petroleum product shortages was one that the administration had successfully avoided in its seven years in office.

The president, who apologized to all citizens for the nationwide fuel and electrical shortages, promised that the problems will be resolved soon.
“The administration recognizes that the fuel crisis is putting a strain on Nigerian residents and businesses, but help is on the way,” he said. I sincerely apologize to everyone in society for this.

“The administration is working 24 hours a day, seven days a week to address this problem.

“To address the issue, an action plan agreed upon earlier this month is being implemented. This initiative is now bearing fruit, thanks to collaboration with the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN) and the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN). In a few states, adequate gasoline supplies have returned, and lineups at gas stations have decreased. We expect this to be the situation across the remainder of the country in the following days.

“Funds are being directed toward keeping fuel availability inexpensive for the country in the long run.”

“International energy markets have risen dramatically in recent months; however, the government will ensure that consumers are safeguarded from these price increases.”
The president expressed his displeasure with reports of shady behavior at the country’s gasoline depots and among petrol station owners.

As a result, he directed the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), and the country’s entire security apparatus to take strong action against those responsible for such irregularities.
Mr Buhari commented on the nationwide electrical blackouts, saying, “The blackouts seen in the national grid are also being handled.” Seasonal constraints have caused a drop in hydroelectric power, which has coincided with technical and supply issues at thermal units. In this regard, the administration is working feverishly to rectify concerns at the latter in order to ensure that enough power flows into the national grid.”

Mr Buhari said that emergency measures had already been implemented following a meeting with key stakeholders to solve the country’s poor power generation.

He noted that the key difficulty has been recognized as low gas power output as a result of gas pipeline sabotage, which has resulted in power plant shutdowns, as well as ongoing normal maintenance on other gas power plants.
He further stated that actions have already been agreed upon by the parties in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry, NESI, and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to recover over 1000MW.

According to him, the National Integrated Power Project, NIPP plants, Niger Delta Power Holding Company, NDPHC, and power plants controlled by NNPC Joint Ventures, Agip, and Shell were the targets of these acts (NAOC and SPDC).

After the pipeline from “Okpai 1” was repaired, the president stated that progress on the essential steps had already assured the restoration of 375MW to the grid.
“To assure the sustainability of up to 800MW of unused NIPP assets, a USD 50 million Gas Supply arrangement is being finalized,” he added.

The president promised that the government’s efforts to address these issues will bear fruit soon.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday, Mr Abdu Umar, the state Commissioner of Police, stated this (NAN).

On February 22, two of the criminals were apprehended after defrauding their victim by using her ATM.

Their confession, according to the Police Commissioner, led to the arrest of the other five accused.

He identified the two suspects as Mohammed Medugu and Usman Saidu, both of Maiduguri’s Bulumkutu Ward.

Samson David, Saminu Shehu-Turaki, Mohammed Sani, Emma Audu, and Felix Haruna are among the others.

The suspects belonged to a nine-man syndicate, according to the police commissioner.

According to him, on February 17, Medugu and Saidu conspired with two other people who are still at large to rob Fati Al-Fantami of her ATM card.

When Al-Fantami attempted to withdraw money from a commercial bank in Bulumkutu, they copied her PIN number.

“When the transaction was unable to be completed, the consumer returned home. The assailants pursued her and robbed her of her ATM card before fleeing on a tricycle.

“The suspects went to another ATM in the city and took N65,000 out of the victim’s account,” Umar said.

Meanwhile, the police Crack Squad pursued and apprehended the offenders based on coordinated intelligence.

After returning from a medical trip overseas, Yobe Governor Mai Mala Buni has assumed leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Caretaker and Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee, CECPC.

This was stated in a statement issued by Mamman Mohammed, his Director General of Press and Media Affairs, in Damaturu on Thursday.

Mr Buni urged all party members to be calm and law-abiding, according to Mr Mohammed.
“Forget about the current happenings in the party and focus on a good Convention.”

“The party’s success remains important, and every member’s support is required.”

“As we approach the National Convention, the party will need the assistance of every stakeholder and member to succeed,” he stated. “As democrats and devoted party members, we should avoid matters that could divert our attention away from the path of victory,” he said.

Mr Buni stated that holding grudges against those involved in recent events in the party was a waste of time, and that grudges were damaging to a party’s success.

He thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for resolving a recent issue within the party amicably.
“We appreciate Mr President’s good leadership role in resolving recent events to maintain the APC unified and strong,” he said.

Mr Buni stated that all measures taken by the APC CECPC under the acting chairman, Governor Abubakar Bello of Niger, remained legitimate and binding.
“I dutifully transferred power to His Excellency Muhammed Sani Bello, Governor of Niger State.”

“As a result, all committee acts and measures done under his leadership as interim chairman remain legitimate and obligatory,” he stated.

On Thursday, Russia threatened the United States that it has the power to put the world’s most powerful superpower in its place.

The Putin-led government further accused the West of fomenting a rabidly anti-Russian plan to split the country apart.

Dmitry Medvedev, who was president from 2008 to 2012 and is now the deputy secretary of Russia’s Security Council, said the US had instigated “disgusting” Russophobia in order to bring Russia to its knees.

“It won’t work because Russia has the power to put all of our brazen adversaries in their place,” Medvedev stated.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, the US and its European and Asian allies have imposed sanctions on Russian officials, firms, and businesspeople, effectively cutting Russia off from the global economy.

President Vladimir Putin claims that the “special military operation” in Ukraine was required because the US was using Ukraine to threaten Russia, and Russia needed to defend itself against Ukraine’s “genocide” of Russian-speaking people.

Ukraine has stated that it is battling for its survival and that Putin’s allegations of genocide are false. Claims that the West wants to pull Russia apart are false, according to the West.

Despite sanctions, Russia claims that it can thrive in the absence of what it sees as a deceptive and decadent West led by the United States.

NPF ordered that the Edo State PCRC Chairperson be suspended indefinitely

Mrs Helen Atekha Odemwingie, the Chairperson of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) of the Edo State Police Command, has been suspended indefinitely by the Nigeria Police Force.

The suspension follows a viral photo of the PCRC chairperson and other members dressed in black uniforms resembling police uniforms, complete with insignias and inscriptions, at an event held at the Edo State Police Command.

“The suspension comes on the heels of a trending picture of the PCRC chairperson and other members at a function held at the Edo State Police Command wherein the PCRC members were seen wearing black uniforms similar to that of the Nigeria Police Force, with accompanying insignias and various inscriptions,” said Acting Force Public Relations Officer CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

“It has been noted that the act violates section 2141.1 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and section 101 of the Police Act, 2020.”

“In accordance with the law, the IGP hereby warns that anyone who adorns themselves illegally in police uniforms will be subjected to the full force of the law.” Similarly, the IGP has directed police disciplinary units, including the Force Provost Marshal, the IGP X-Squad, and the Monitoring Unit, to crack down on people who sell police uniforms, kits, and accoutrements illegally outside of police approved stores and the Quartermaster’s office.”

Non-police individuals and groups are also prohibited from wearing police uniforms, kits, and accoutrements.

The Inspector-General of Police also directed the Force Public Relations Officer to meet and collaborate with members of the Nigerian Guild of Actors to improve partnership and ensure proper use of police uniforms, kits, and accoutrements in their films/skits, he said.

“In recent months, members of the state’s police public relations officers have been accused of going too far in their relationship with the cops, particularly in their dress.

“Many come to events wearing T-shirts with police logos on them, and others go around police divisions begging for the release of suspects in custody,” he added.
