Oil Theft: The Federal Government Has Started An Investigation Into Operator Accounts To Verify Claims

0

Following claims of massive oil theft by operators, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has established a panel to investigate the activities of oil companies operating in the country.

Some upstream operators have recently claimed that as much as 80 percent to 95 percent of crude oil pumped is stolen from pipelines before reaching the export terminal.

Nigeria has been unable to increase its oil production volume to meet its prescribed Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) quota of 1.8 million barrels per day, or even benefit from the high crude prices, due to massive oil theft reported by operators.

Engr. Gbenga Komolafe, the NUPRC’s chief executive, said in a statement yesterday that the panel will thoroughly audit the activities of upstream petroleum industry operators over the last two years.

This is to compare recent allegations by some industry operators about the volume of crude stolen on a daily basis from their operations with the actual volume of crude stolen by vandals and saboteurs.

According to Komolafe, the panel must also determine whether the claimed volumes are accurate, and if so, what additional measures are needed to effectively address the problem.

“While a stakeholders’ meeting has been called to discuss the situation with a view to jointly addressing the situation, the Commission activated its technical and commercial mandate on Monday 21 at a meeting of its management meeting to demand the operators’ statement of financial accounts and reservoir accounts for productive oil wells for the previous two years.” This will include a sales audit as well as a reservoir audit in order to establish links between their technical and commercial activities and the monitoring and evaluation records available to regulatory agencies.”

According to him, the Commission is aware of the tragedy of oil theft, which has plagued the industry and prompted an industry-wide initiative last year aimed at curbing it and increasing crude production levels, as a result of an express presidential directive.

Concerned about the continuous acts of sabotage by criminals and some unscrupulous individuals within the industry, Komolafe said President Muhammadu Buhari had directed that all necessary mechanisms be activated to stop oil theft in particular and other forms of economic sabotage in the oil and gas industry immediately.

“Action on the directive began right away and is still ongoing. Given the actions taken thus far on the issue, the Commission finds the crude loss figures recently quoted in the media by some operators concerning.

“In order to verify the veracity of these claims, the Commission has activated all necessary mechanisms to get to the bottom of the matter and determine the actual volume of crude stolen versus the claimed volumes.”

“While stepping up efforts to combat oil theft in collaboration with the military and other relevant agencies,” he said, “the Commission has mandated the newly formed panel to investigate claims regarding the volume of theft from various oils fields and establish the actual operational capacities of the operators.”

Abortion, Ehanire, And The Law

In Nigeria, abortion is illegal, according to Sonnie Ekwowusi.
The final year of the Buhari administration has been marred by major scandals. In the midst of Nigeria’s worsening living conditions, exacerbated by suffocating intense heat, collapsed electricity supply, acute scarcity of aviation and automobile fuel, scarcity of gas and kerosene, sky-rocking inflation, free-fall of the Naira, collapsed primary health system, and genteel poverty, President Buhari jets out to London for medical tourism, as he has done for the past seven years. His wife, Aisha Buhari, is a frequent visitor to Dubai. She is not subjected to the hardships that Nigerians are subjected to. Similarly, while many sick Nigerians die in Nigeria due to a lack of access to primary health care, Mr. President travels to London to be treated by the best doctors in the world. While he relaxes in London, his media team in Aso Villa issues a statement on his behalf, “apologizing” to Nigerians for the plethora of problems they face. Mr. President, unfortunately, has no solution to the deteriorating living conditions. Nigerians were shown a massive Rice Pyramid in Abuja last December to give the false impression that rice is plentiful in Nigeria and that Nigerians can feed themselves. However, Nigeria is the 103rd hungriest country in the world, out of 119 countries, according to the Global Hunger Index (GHI). Mr. President has no one to answer to. He is oblivious to the needs of the people. In the last seven years, he has failed to construct even one good hospital in Nigeria where he and other powerful Nigerians could seek medical treatment rather than wasting foreign currency on medical tourism.

Buhari’s ministers, like Mr. President, are free to do whatever they want. They, too, have no one to answer to. Some of them believe they are exempt from the rule of law. For example, under the guise of reducing Nigeria’s population, the Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire (Oredo Local Council, Edo State), has recently launched a comprehensive abortion, infanticide, and contraception national policies and programs in Nigeria, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), aimed at killing Nigerian babies and children. The World Health Organization (WHO), which is heavily funding and overseeing the project, boasts that it will dismantle all legal, religious, cultural, and philosophical principles in Nigeria in order to allow for the abortion killing of Nigerian babies. To this end, the WHO has spent billions of dollars to encourage Nigerian women and girls to seek abortion, also known as “family planning (FP) services,” “Family Planning 2030,” or “sexual reproductive health.” Because the word “abortion” is offensive in the Nigerian socio-cultural and religious context, as well as the fact that abortion is illegal in Nigeria, the WHO, Minister Ehanire, and the Federal Ministry of Health, Abuja, Nigeria, deceptively use euphemisms and dubious phrases like “family planning (FP) services” or “Family Planning 2030” or “sexual reproductive health” to promote abortion and infanticide, hoping that the undiscerning public will not realize they are doing so.

Senator Daisy Ehanire-Danjuma (Edo-South Council) sponsored an Abortion Bill in the National Assembly in 2006, which was dubbed the National Institute of Reproductive Health bill. On the 13th of February 2006, the Senate held a public hearing on the bill. The bill was met with fierce opposition, the most vocal of which came from a group of mothers and women who stormed the Senate in two buses early on the fateful day. I was one of the lawyers who argued in the National Assembly against the Bill on behalf of about 15 Nigerian NGOs and organizations. Senator Danjuma argued in her defense that the bill was not an abortion bill because the term “abortion” was not specifically mentioned. In response, we argued that, while the word “abortion” was not explicitly mentioned in the bill, the concepts of reproductive health and adolescent sexual reproductive health mentioned in the bill are all well-known euphemisms or soft languages for promoting abortion, contraceptives among schoolchildren, and teaching Nigerian children dating, masturbation, breast enlargement, “safe sex” or “condom-sex.” Senator Danjuma chose to withdraw the bill in the face of opposition so that it could be amended. We, on the other hand, were against the amendment. The Senate Health Committee held a three-day retreat at the Presidential Hotel in Port Harcourt from Thursday, April 27 to Sunday, April 30, 2006, for a select group of 18 people to reconsider the Bill. The Abortion Bill was finally dismissed due to its lack of merit and incompatibility with public morality and public interest after a second hearing. So don’t be fooled. Abortion is also known as “sexual reproductive health.” Similar arguments can be made for “family planning (FP) services,” “Family Planning 2030,” “fertility regulation,” “access to appropriate health care services,” “interruption of unwanted pregnancies,” “safe motherhood,” “post-abortion care,” and so on.

Minister Ehanire is now conspiring with the WHO to abort Nigerian women and schoolgirls in order to reduce the Nigerian population, using the euphemisms “sexual reproductive health,” “family planning (FP) services,” and “Family Planning 2030.” In Nigeria, the WHO claims that abortion is a human right (Human right my foot). As I write this, I have documents from the World Health Organization (WHO) detailing the methods used to kill Nigerian babies in front of me. To begin with, the World Health Organization (WHO) has flooded Nigeria with a variety of surgical abortion instruments. The Vacuum Aspiration is one of these instruments for aborting 14-week pregnancies. Dilation and evacuation (D & E) by generalist and specialist medical practitioners, traditional and complementary medical practitioners, midwives, and associative and advanced clinicians is recommended by the WHO as a complement to vacuum aspiration.

Why is the Minister of Health collaborating with the WHO to break Nigerian law? Abortion is illegal in Nigeria under the combined effect of sections 228, 229, 230, and 328 of the Criminal Code (and their equivalent provisions in the Penal Code). In fact, Section 230 of the Criminal Code expressly states that anyone who supplies any drug, substance, contraceptive, or instrument to a girl or woman with the intent of unlawfully procuring abortion or infanticide on the girl or woman commits a felony and is sentenced to three years in prison if convicted. In addition, the right to life is guaranteed by Section 33 of the 1999 Constitution. It states that no one may be put to death unless he or she is serving a sentence from a court for a criminal offense for which he or she has been found guilty in Nigeria. The Nigerian social order is founded, among other things, on the sanctity of the human person, according to Section 17 of the 1999 Constitution. Similarly, section 38 of the constitution protects the right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion, stating that every Nigerian has the right to propagate his or her religion or belief through worship, teaching, practice, and observance.

Sterling Bank Cleans Up Nigeria as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

Sterling Bank Plc recently conducted environmental cleaning exercises in 23 states across Nigeria as part of its commitment to creating a cleaner and safer environment for citizens and aquatic life through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative known as Sterling Bank Environmental Makeover (STEM).

Markets, roads, and beaches were cleaned as part of the cleanup exercises to commemorate World Recycling Day, which was celebrated recently in every country around the world.

Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Kwara, Ondo, Ekiti, Kano, Jigawa, Kaduna, Abuja, Delta, Anambra, Edo, Abia, Imo, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa-Ibom, Gombe, Bauchi, Plateau, Katsina, and Lagos all held simultaneous exercises.

The clean-up exercises drew over 1,000 people, including Sterling Bank employees and volunteers. The Oniru Kingdom, Rite Foods, First Exploration and Petroleum Development Company, Bonnie Bio, Sterling One Foundation, Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), African Clean-Up Initiative, and Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency collaborated on the project in Lagos (LASEPA).

Mr. Abubakar Suleiman, Managing Director and CEO of Sterling Bank, said the bank embarked on beach cleaning exercises in 21 of the 24 states it is partnering with across the country.

“We have been on this journey for more than 10 years,” said the CEO, who was represented by Mr. Tunde Adeola, Executive Director of Commercial and Institutional Banking at Sterling Bank. We have a cleaner and healthier environment every time this happens.”

“Sterling Bank is well-positioned to do this,” he said, adding that the bank has received recognition and awards for the initiative in the last two years. Sterling Bank, he claims, is also at the forefront of tourism in Lagos State.

Mrs. Mojisola Bakare, General Manager, Corporate and Investment Banking at Sterling Bank, also spoke, saying, “Sterling Bank is about impactful banking,” noting that they believe there is no way they can live on this planet without having an impact on the environment, and that is why they have what they call the HEART of Sterling, where they have strategically decided to impact specific areas of economic growth.

She explained that the HEART of Sterling stands for Health, Education, Agriculture, Renewable Energy, and Transportation, and that the company’s headquarters in Marina, Lagos, is being outfitted with solar panels and will soon be powered entirely by the sun.

Mrs. Bakare stated, “It is critical that we take responsibility for our actions on the environment and preserve its beauty in order to boost the local economy and attract foreign tourists, and thus foreign exchange into the country.”

“We are aware that Lagos is a place of aquatic splendour,” said Mrs. Uzamat Yussuf, Commissioner for the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism. “It is better we don’t have any water at all if we have water that is not well protected and sustained,” she said. “That is why it is important for us to sensitize the citizens of Lagos on proper waste disposal.”

“When we don’t properly dispose of waste, it becomes a problem for ourselves and the state as a whole because when it rains and all of our drainage systems are blocked, we continue to have flooding.” In developed countries, they sell their beaches to tourists and make a lot of money while also increasing employment.”

The commissioner emphasized the importance of citizens cleaning the beaches in order to encourage tourists to visit and see what the state has to offer, noting that the purpose of tourism is to generate wealth, which will increase the country’s GDP. She urged everyone to continue to properly manage and dispose of waste in order to protect the environment.

Mr. Godswill Uwanoruo, the Abia State Commissioner of Transport, praised Sterling Bank’s management and staff for the cleaning campaign that began in the state in 2015.

“I started this program with them in 2015 when I introduced the bank’s team to the governor of the state, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, led by the incumbent CEO, Mr. Suleiman, who was the then Executive Director of Finance at the time.”

“I am glad they kept the program going by ensuring that Abia State is clean,” Uwanoruo said.

He advised other banks in the country to follow Sterling Bank’s example because it is not easy for employees to leave their offices and clean markets and roads.

In addition, the commissioner suggested that the exercise be done on a monthly or quarterly basis rather than annually.

Mr. Iselema Gbaranbiri, the Commissioner of Environment in Bayelsa State, who spoke at the STEM event, said, “The state government is here with Sterling Bank to show the world that they are synergizing and keeping Bayelsa clean.”

Honourable Muktar Baloni, Chairman of the Kaduna North Local Government Area Council, said he was impressed by the consistency of Sterling Bank’s environmental cleaning exercise and that he would like to emulate the bank by instructing local government officials to replicate what the bank is doing.

Every year on March 18th, the world celebrates World Recycling Day, despite the fact that recycling is a key component of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030. Annually, the world generates over two billion metric tonnes of municipal solid waste and reusable items, according to estimates.

The event’s theme this year is the ‘Recycling Fraternity,’ which refers to people who put themselves on the front lines to collect waste and recycle during the Covid-19 pandemic’s multiple lockdowns.

OAU VC: Protesters, Don’t Take Laws Into Your Hands, Ooni Warns

Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II has warned indigenes and residents of the ancient town not to take the law into their own hands over the process that led to the selection of the new Vice-Chancellor for Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

On Tuesday, the Arole Oduduwa’s Director of Media and Public Affairs, Otunba Moses Olafare, issued a statement assuring the institution’s workers and students of their safety as well as their property.

The Ooni also promised the protesters that their agitation would be given adequate and objective attention, saying that while protests are legitimate rights and ways to communicate dissatisfaction to the appropriate authorities, they must not be used to jeopardize society’s peace and security.

“Everyone has the right to protest so that their unheard voice can be heard.
Professional and academic stakeholders/trade unions, such as ASUU, NASU, NBA, NANS, religious bodies, political parties, and even concerned individuals, have all adopted this approach, but it must be done peacefully.

“Over the years, the good people of Ife have been a fantastic host to the university, enrolling their children and equally enlisting qualified hands (from all walks of life) to work in the citadel of learning.

“The Ife community is proud to have partnered with the institution through the House of Oduduwa on viable programs and projects that project Ile-Ife to the outside world as an ancient city ready for progress and development,” says the statement.

“While Ooni Ogunwusi has rallied major stakeholders to address the problem, Kabiyesi calls for calm, urging all law-abiding citizens to go about their daily lives without fear.”

“The positive relationship between the Town (Ile-Ife) and the Gown (OAU) is as strong as ever, especially for the benefit of the university’s younger students.”

“The OAU is Ife, and Ife is the OAU, and we will continue to coexist in peace for the sake of progress,” Olafare said.

Emeka Ihedioha At 57

0

Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha CON, Omenkeahuruanya, celebrated his 54th birthday as Governor-elect on March 24, 2019. The day was memorable because the good people of Imo State, who had just given him a four-year mandate to run their affairs, as well as Nigerians who had been following the events in Imo, congratulated him. However, by his 55th birthday, he was no longer their governor, thanks to a contentious judicial decision two months before that had put the people’s collective fate in jeopardy.

Imolites have yet to recover from the shock of that episode, though they are comforted by the fact that Ihedioha’s seven-month tenure as the state’s seat of government was remarkable; a period in which, most importantly, an ugly trend of elite conspiracy was reversed and government was returned to the people.

Two years later, the people are still as enamored with him as they were when he first arrived. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha is easily the most talked about person in the state outside of office and power. Of course, it is not always to edify him, but he has dominated political discourse in the state, whether on the left or the right. It’s not difficult to figure out why. Imolites have praised his sheer resilience and steadfastness in the face of a highly debilitating political and psychological assault on his career, in addition to his leadership of a populist mass movement that won victory after years of struggle for a people-oriented government.

Read also: In Ekiti, a man was sentenced to death for raping and killing his landlady.

Ihedioha has remained as inspiring to the people as he was in the years leading up to their first victory in 2019. He did so not through grandstanding or bitter braggadocio, as many ex-governors are prone to doing, but by returning home to be with the people and sharing in both their grief and triumph. In fact, his hushed demeanor has alarmed a number of people, particularly those in positions of power in the state. “Why hasn’t Ihedioha said anything about this?” is a common remark among the current helmsmen’s handlers.

Hon. Ihedioha decided to mend fences with hitherto real or perceived political enemies, ostensibly following the Zikist philosophy of “Show The Light And The People Will Follow,” with the ultimate goal of returning the people to the path of peaceful coexistence. However, that did not appear to sit well with those in charge of the state’s affairs at the time. They haven’t stopped asking, “Why should Ihedioha attend funerals of relatives of our “enemies?” And, because your enemy’s friend is assumed to be your enemy, they’ve gone to great lengths to demonize this long-time foe who has remained their nemesis despite his temporary demise. The people, on the other hand, have been unmistakable in their assessment of his seven months in office and his successor’s 26-month reign.

Take, for example, the question about the state’s recent spate of insecurity. Why were there no Unknown Gun Men (UGM) in the state during Hon. Ihedioha’s seven months in office, or the eight years before that? To those in power today, the answer is that the UGM were brought in by “politicians” who were dissatisfied with their removal from office! It’s so simple to say, but the public is not fooled. They are familiar with Ihedioha’s history as a peaceful, meticulous, and patriotic leader.

“Since your best isn’t enough, we’ll revert to those who know how to keep unknown gunmen away come 2023,” they say in response to the current administration’s despair over insecurity. That is where we are now, and it is why, as the 2023 general election approaches, the darts at Omenkeahuruanya (the one whose strides are visible) will continue to fly.

Some hatchet groups, all known as surrogates of the current administration in the state, simultaneously issued statements accusing Rt Hon. Emeka Ihedioha of “over heating” the polity and requesting law enforcement agencies to interrogate him for simply receiving applause after an inspiring speech at the fourth anniversary of the Owerri Renaissance, also known as the “Egbu Declaration” last November. Since then, no day goes by without one of the current administration’s hirelings speculating and, in some cases, losing sleep over Ihedioha’s likely candidacy for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 governorship elections.

Only a few days ago, one of Senator Hope Uzodimma’s supporters posted on Facebook, ‘advising’ Ihedioha not to run for governor in 2023, but instead to run for the Owerri zone senatorial seat! Can’t we see that Ihedioha’s fear is real? Why is Ihedioha’s candidacy for the 2023 election causing such a stir?

The answer is not improbable. Those of us who are familiar with social media, however, should go there and see the responses and comments that greeted the aide’s meddling.

To summarize, the main issue in the 2023 elections, in the eyes of the majority of the good people of Imo state, will be to ask how Ihedioha was able to restore peaceful coexistence and economic stability in just seven months; and how, in the 26 months since he left office, the state has witnessed the highest level of social and economic disequilibrium ever experienced by the people in the collective history.

Yes, it could have been due to the cumulative failure of previous administrations, but in dealing with the past, Imolites will begin with the present, as in the aphorism of two logs colliding. To clear the road, you must first remove the log from the top. To put it another way, people would first disassociate themselves from the current administration’s perfidy (the top log) before moving on to the log(s) below.

The people are, of course, encouraged by Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha’s sheer strength of character, stability, and calm temperament, which he demonstrated during his seven-month administration and which he has maintained since leaving office. They see a man whose words are his only means of communication. They see a man who lives up to his philosophy of prioritizing the welfare of the people over the absurdity of endless summons at the Abuja Villa.

They see a man who has led the Peoples Democratic Party in Imo State with selfless, objective, and result-oriented leadership; a party that, despite the shenanigans of those in power today, offers the hapless masses of the people a credible alternative.

Birthday greetings

In Ekiti, a man was sentenced to death for raping and killing his landlady.

Tunmise Abraham was sentenced to death by hanging by an Ekiti State High Court in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, for raping and killing his landlady, Mrs Bukola Olanrewaju, a mother of three.

In 2019, a court found Abraham guilty of raping and killing his landlady in Ado-Olorunda Ekiti’s Zone 7 area.

Before carrying out the act, the defendant was accused of breaking into the landlady’s room, threatening her with a cutlass, and tying her up.

When the incident occurred, the landlady was alone at home after her husband had gone to work and her children had gone to holiday coaching, according to a witness.

On Wednesday, a Federal High Court in Abuja set April 11 for judgment in a suit seeking to have the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara’s seat declared vacant due to his defection to the All Progressives Congress.

The date was set by Justice Donatus Okorowo, who said the judgment, which had been scheduled for Wednesday, was not yet ready.

Dogara’s defection to the APC prompted the Peoples Democratic Party to petition the court to have him removed as the member representing the Bogoro/Dass/Tafawa Balewa Federal Constituency in Bauchi State.

The plaintiffs in the suit are the PDP and its state chairman, Hamza Akuyam, while the defendants are Dogara, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Independent National Electoral Commission, and the APC.

When he submitted a resignation letter to the Chairman of the Bogoro ‘C’ Ward in the state on July 24, 2020, Dogara defected from the PDP to the APC.

By virtue of Section 68(1)(g) of the Constitution, the plaintiffs claimed that by defecting from the party that sponsored him to the 9th National Assembly before the end of his term, Dogara should vacate the seat because he was no longer qualified to participate in the lower house’s activities.

Alhaji Sanusi Rikiji, Chief of Staff to Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has resigned his position and declared interest in contesting the Senate bye-election for the Zamfara Central Senatorial zone.

Rikiji, who was also the immediate past Speaker of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, is running for the senate seat that became vacant after Senator Hassan Nasiha, the state’s deputy governor, resigned.

He went to the state APC headquarters in Gusau, along the Sokoto By-pass Road, to express his interest in the position.

He told the state APC executives, led by Tukur Danfulani, that he wanted to run for the Senate seat so that he could contribute more to the state’s political and socio-economic development.
