Dino Jonah Melaye, a former senator from Kogi West, has slammed President Muhammadu Buhari for the country’s current wave of insecurity.
In a statement released on March 30th, Melaye lambasted the President, calling him “incompetent” and “commanding nothing.”
“I write this text with tears in my eyes,” the statement said. I had no idea that a day would come when my beautiful nation would be transformed into a valley of the shadow of death. No location is secure in a country where we now live in constant fear of being attacked at any moment, any day, and anyplace.”
“People are slain on a regular basis, and their carcasses litter the streets like chicken carcasses. We can no longer go to any region of the country with the expectation of reaching our destination securely. We were condemned to murder, assassination, and kidnapping for the crime of being a Nigerian citizen under this administration. There hasn’t been a single day that hasn’t brought news of a new wave of security issues, ranging from abduction to extremist insurgencies. Violence and criminality have struck every part of the country.”

“Just last week, we lost promising Nigerian youngsters in a bandit assault on a train between Abuja and Kaduna; and what was their crime, simply being a Nigerian citizen under a government that has failed its citizens?” Since 2015, insurgency in Nigeria has claimed the lives of nearly 350,000 people, according to the Global Conflict Tracker Report.
“According to the 1999 Constitution as amended, one of the government’s fundamental obligations is to safeguard the lives and property of its residents.” “The basic objective of government should be the security and welfare of the people,” according to Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended. This government, on the other hand, has utterly failed us. Dr. Chinelo Megafu Chinelo, Amin Mahmoud, Barr. Musa Lawal-Ozigi, and many more who perished as a result of insurgency were failed by this government.”
“The question I’ll keep asking is this: where did we go wrong?” Is there still a President in the United States? Yes, but one who is inept. A President who claims to be the commander-in-chief of the armed forces but has no authority over them. A President who is indifferent and unconcerned with the situation of his people. A President who is unconcerned about his subjects’ survival or the worth of their lives. A president who isn’t even aware of what’s going on in his own nation.”
“Mr. President, you will be remembered not as a President who could do nothing when his countrymen were slaughtered like chickens when you leave office in 2023, but as a President who could not do anything when his citizens were slaughtered like chickens.” When armed bandits, kidnappers, unknown gunmen, and boko haram were murdering, maiming, destroying private and public property, and dispossessing people, a President who couldn’t do anything.”

“Finally, Mr. President, the magnitude of insecurity in our nation has put the basic fabric of Nigerian society in jeopardy.” Human lives are lost or permanently injured with each assault, and our trust in democracy and the country is eroding. When you were elected in 2015, Mr. President, you pledged to protect Americans from terrorists and criminals. However, with less than a year remaining in your final term, the country is more insecure than it has been in decades. Please, Mr. President, take action. SILENCE IS A CRIME IN AN UNJUST SOCIETY.”
