EndSARS: Sanwo-Olu reimburses Lagos Uber driver for court-ordered damages of N5 million

0

Adedotun Clement, an Uber driver who was assaulted on the first anniversary of the EndSARS protest, has been awarded N5 million in compensation by a Lagos court. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos has announced that he will pay Clement’s award.
On October 20, 2021, police officers and representatives of the Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Agency attacked the victim at the Lekki Tollgate.

In a court in Lagos State, Mr. Clement and his attorney, Inibehe Effiong, filed a N500 million lawsuit against the police and the state agency.

On March 14, the Lagos division of the high court decided that Mr. Clement should receive N5 million in damages from the state government.

Mr. Sanwo-Olu stated in a series of tweets on Saturday that he was ready to make the payment, that he would uphold the law, and that he would defend the rights of the public.

He continued by saying that he had given the state’s attorney general, Moyosore Onigbanjo, the order to schedule a meeting in order to pay the damages determined by the court.

Good evening, Lagos. In my capacity as governor, I’m dedicated to upholding the rule of law and defending the rights of citizens with compassion and authority.

“I recently learned about Mr. Clement Adedotun’s case and the Federal High Court’s ruling, and I recognize the effect this legal dispute has had on him.

Following a review of Mr. Clement’s case, Mr. Sanwo-Olu stated, “I have instructed the Honorable Attorney General to schedule a meeting and pay him the compensation awarded by the Court.”

According to Mr. Sanwo-Olu, the state government will not challenge the high Court’s decision but will instead abide by it for the benefit of the general populace.

He reaffirmed his commitment to upholding human rights for Lagos residents and praised the applicants for seeking justice.

Despite the State Government’s appeal of the judgment, Mr. Sanwo-Olu stated, “I have intervened in this matter in the interest of the public good and requested that the State’s Attorney General comply with the court’s ruling.”

“I commend all parties for seeking justice through the proper channels, and I remain committed to upholding the rights of all Lagosians,” he continued. “As a strong advocate for the rule of law, I also applaud all parties for doing so.

Yul Edochie, an actor in Nollywood, has advised men to maintain a high level of confidence whenever they approach women for the purpose of starting a relationship.

The famous movie star offered the piece of advice on his Instagram page (@yuledochie), and he said that developing one’s confidence as a man in approaching a woman is one of the best ways to ensure that one will end up with the ideal option.

According to him, being threatened by a woman’s success is not the best course of action. He also mentioned that some women are not interested in a man’s financial status but are more interested in his qualities, logic, personality, and appearance.

He went on to say that a man should not be prevented from expressing his feelings by a lady’s wealth, particularly when he was truly in love.

” If she is wealthy and you are not, but you like her anyway, you should tell her that you like her. Shishi no dey your side.

“Tell her that you are interested in dating her if you do. Not all women are motivated by financial gain.

“The caliber of the man, including his reasoning, behavior, and looks, can captivate the attention of certain women.

“Tell her how you feel; she will either say yes or no to what you’re asking, but she won’t kill you.

“As a human being, regardless of your financial situation, you should strive to maintain a healthy level of self-confidence.

Even just your self-assurance can win her favor, ‘Money is not everything,’ as the saying goes.

Success of 2023 census depends on traditional, religious leaders, says Abari

0

Dr. Garba Abari, Director General of the National Orientation Agency, has emphasized the significance of religious and traditional leaders in order to ensure the success of the 2023 National Population and Housing Census.

This was something that Abari discussed during his appearance on the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum that took place in Abuja on Sunday.

It was stated by the director-general, who is a member of the National Publicity and Advocacy Committee on census, that traditional institutions and religious leaders, in addition to leaders of thought, play critical roles in the process of social mobilization.

He went on to say that the traditional institutions and religious leaders had shown support for the census after being engaged by the National Population Commission (NPC), which had achieved success in this endeavor.

According to him, the success of the census in 2023 will largely be dependent on the role that traditional institutions and religious leaders play as well as their participation in the census.

“The Chairman of the National Population Commission had visited key traditional leaders and made them census ambassadors in order to engage them for the exercise,” he explained further.

In addition to this, he (the chairman) had traveled to every state in order to meet with relevant stakeholders in preparation for the exercise.

The majority of traditional and religious leaders are also members of the census committees of their respective states, as well as the census committees of their respective local governments and communities, wherever it is applicable.

“As far as the role of these critical individuals and institutions is concerned, they have been sufficiently captured, and very soon we will see a saturation of their messages in the airwaves, markets, motor parks, streets, and even in Churches and Mosques,” said the author. “As far as the role of these critical individuals and institutions is concerned, they have been sufficiently captured.”

The head of the NOA emphasized how important an accurate census is to national planning and development, and as a result, he urged all Nigerians to make sure that they were counted in the upcoming census.

He also mentioned that the census, which was supposed to take place on March 29, will now take place from May 3 to May 5.

According to Abari, the date change was necessary due to the Independent National Electoral Commission moving the elections for governorship and State Assembly from March 11 to March 18. These elections were originally scheduled to take place on March 11.

He stated that Nigerians should not expect anything other than a transparent national census, while at the same time assuring the deployment of cutting-edge technology to prevent any lapses in the process.

According to the NAN, the country’s most recent national census was carried out in the year 2006.

To co-contestants, Makinde extends an olive branch.

On Saturday in Ibadan, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who was able to win in the election for the governorship of Oyo State on March 18, called on the other candidates who ran in the election to work alongside him to bring Oyo State to even greater heights.

“The electioneering campaign is behind us at this point, and we are now going to fight over the issue of governance.

During the course of a radio program, Makinde was quoted as saying, “This is our state and commonwealth and we must make sure that we move our state forward.”

He characterized his electoral success as a victory for the people of Oyo State and stated that he would be open to working with the ideas of his fellow candidates wherever it was determined that their ideas were more effective than his own in the areas in which they competed.

According to him, now is the time for everyone to work together for the benefit of Oyo State, and he promises that he will expand his sphere of influence by developing the state’s infrastructure.

He stressed that he would continue to build on the solid foundation that had already been laid over the course of the previous four years, and he made the promise that he would continue to deliver high-quality projects that would affect all aspects of the state.

The governor continued by saying that he would also put into practice the lessons learned during the campaigns and would keep vigorously working to develop the state as he had been doing since he took office in 2019 when he took over as governor.

Makinde expressed his gratitude to all of the residents who supported him prior to, during, and after the election. These supporters included elder statesmen and women, businessmen, labor unions, market associations, and religious bodies.

In the same vein, he mentioned that during his second term in office, his administration would be able to provide infrastructure to an even larger population in Oyo State and reach even more areas.

He maintained that the hiring of educators and other non-teaching staff members, as well as the construction of additional educational infrastructure, would receive major priority during his second term in office.

Makinde added that the administration would reacquire the services of a significant number of the terminated employees provided that they were not connected to any fraudulent activity.

The contract for the rehabilitation of the Agbowo Shopping Complex, which is located directly opposite the main gate of the University of Ibadan, will be re-awarded to a contractor with the appropriate capacity as soon as possible, according to the governor. (NAN)

Abia Assembly refutes plans to indict Ikpeazu

0

The Abia State House of Assembly has refuted any plan whatsoever to indict the incumbent governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, from office.

Ifeanyi Uchendu, the Deputy Speaker of the House, made this information public on Saturday while addressing the press following a meeting with the governor at the Governor’s Lodge in Aba. The meeting was held earlier in the day.

Uchendu advised the general public to disregard the “rumor” that is circulating, adding that the House of Representatives has not even reconvened since the state elections.

He said, “I just want to inform you that what has been gaining grounds that the House of Assembly is planning to impeach the governor is just a rumor.” He was referring to the rumor that the House of Assembly was planning to remove the governor from office.

“There is no such plan,” the person said. In point of fact, as we speak, the House of Representatives has not even resumed its session. As a result of the election, we just returned from our vacation. We have not yet decided when we will get back together again. I am standing here to tell everyone that there are no such plans to impeach the governor, and I am doing so from this very spot.
Uchendu stated, in addition to the fact that the citizens of Abia State are pleased with the governor, that “he has done well for us and for the entire citizens of Abia State.” Even if he steps down from his position as president within the next two months, he will do so without incident because he is a peaceful man.

NASS members merit stipends not big allowances – NNPP senatorial candidate

Helen Mbakwe, a senatorial candidate for the New Nigeria People’s Party in the Anambra Central Senatorial District, discusses her reasons for losing the election as well as her opinions on the compensation of National Assembly members with IKENNA OBIANERI.

You claimed that the blurriness of your party’s logo on the ballot caused you to lose the election. What will you do next?

Despite my best efforts during the campaign to inform my supporters and voters in general about the NNPP and its logo, the NNPP logo and name were unfortunately blurred on the ballots on election day. That was the beginning of my letdown. I did not anticipate such a thing occurring once more during our elections. I had assumed INEC would have advanced past that point by this point. That is separate from the numerous instances where INEC officials were tardy in arriving. Voting was supposed to begin early in the morning and end by 2.30 p.m., but in my neighborhood, it actually began at 1.05 p.m. So let me see how it goes before I respond to your question about what I want to do. The national party has released a statement on that. I was prevented from taking part in the process of serving my people as a result of that action. I am speaking with my attorney and will say a prayer for the cancellation of the senatorial district election. The NNPP logo was barely visible and blurred on the ballots.

Have you started the procedure yet?

As I previously stated, I will ask the court to throw out the senatorial elections. Victor Umeh is the winner, and I’ve congratulated him, but I’m also contesting the results. In the interim, Umeh has been crowned the victor while the court considers my case. I’d like to express my gratitude to the residents of the Anambra Central senatorial district for exercising their right to vote. But INEC refused to give me that chance.

Do you believe the error was made intentionally? There is a procedure for parties to review the ballot papers for potential corrections before they are printed.

If it had been an error, it should have been repeated elsewhere, so I believe it was done on purpose. While they took their time to arrange those of the other political parties, they purposely made the NNPP logo blurry. They ought to have done their research before releasing such a thing for the entire nation of more than 200 million people. Before printing, they ought to have had representatives from each party review it and make sure everything was satisfactory. Therefore, what happened was better than having our names on the ballot. We discovered that even some of the ad hoc staff did not recognize the political parties’ logos because when we asked some of them, they were at a loss for words.

The NNPP logo that was printed on the ballot paper was not the one we used. I had warned my supporters not to expect to see me, but rather to watch for the NNPP and its distinctive logo, which features a map of Nigeria with a basket of fruits inside. I focused on the fruit basket, but if I hadn’t been patient enough, I might not have recognized my party when I arrived at the voting location. The party’s name was completely hazy. They did not even remotely resemble the NNPP logo with what they had there as our logo. Voters were perplexed because there was no fruit basket anywhere on the ballot paper. Voters were asking INEC staff in one of the polling places I visited around 4 o’clock to show them where the NNPP was listed on the ballot, and the staff appeared perplexed. The commission used a significant amount of resources and money to conduct this election, but the results did not support the significant outlay. It was deplorable.

In the presidential election ballot, did that also have an impact on your party?

Yes, it had an impact on both the presidential and National Assembly categories. The national party has responded and submitted a report to INEC regarding it.

Many people believe that Nigeria should adopt a part-time legislature in light of the country’s declining revenues; do you agree with them?

The National Assembly shouldn’t be considered a retirement community or a place where people go to work for a living. It ought to be regarded as a location for service. Because of this, anyone going there should be carefully vetted, and they should be individuals who have achieved success in their field or whatever they do. People should be able to serve at the National Assembly. Political office holders heavily contribute to the nation’s massive debt load when you talk about declining revenue. Political office holders, in my opinion, ought to be compensated similarly to civil servants. By doing this, the nation will spend less on ongoing expenses. The issue is that many people who hold political office have no other source of income or employment. Because of this, whenever they are elected to public office, such as the National Assembly, they make sure to plunder the nation to the bone. They should receive stipends instead of salaries and benefits because their service should only serve to supplement their work. The National Assembly should only allow its members to serve one term in order to make room for newcomers with innovative ideas.

What do you think about governors who leave office to run for the senate?

It’s because these governors consider the National Assembly to be a platform for personal advancement or a position they merit to hold following their terms in office. One of the things we should correct is this very wrong motive. The governors shouldn’t use the Senate as a place to retire. We ought to be able to enact laws to prevent that at the appropriate time. Instead of being a place where people go to retire or sleep, the Senate ought to be a place where people want to serve. It is regrettable that many people enter politics today with the intention of enriching themselves rather than promoting Nigeria’s development. I entered politics to serve, and because of what the NNPP stands for, that is why I joined.

Yahaya Bello warns Kogi governorship aspirants against divisive acts

0

Governor Yahaya Bello, the candidate leading the Kogi State governorship race, has warned APC candidates against dividing the party.

Prior to the party’s primary election, which is scheduled for April, he advised them to concentrate on playing to their strengths in wooing party members.

The controversy surrounding the suspension of Murtala Yakubu, a state-based member of the APC National Working Committee, follows Mr. Bello’s advice.

In a statement released by Kingsley Fanwo, the commissioner for information and communications, the governor issued a warning against polarizing attitudes that might endanger the party’s interests and threaten the harmony and cooperation that the ruling party had been known for in the state under his leadership.
