In Kaduna, bandits kill pastor’s son, kidnap his wife, three others

On Friday morning, bandits killed a pastor’s son in Karimbu-Kahugu community in Kaduna State’s Lere Local Government Area and abducted four other family members, including the pastor’s wife.

According to Peter Mukaddas, vice chairman of the Kahugu National Development Association in Lere Local Government Area, the bandits broke into the neighborhood early on Friday morning, attacked the pastor’s home right away, and then left.

He claimed that the bandits kidnapped the pastor’s wife and three other people from the house after shooting the pastor’s son when he resisted them.

Mukaddas pleaded with the state government to step in and free the kidnapped people safely. We are fervently asking God to change their hearts so they will have the insight to let them go, he said.

At the time this report was filled out, there was still no communication between the bandits and the victims’ families.

In the meantime, DSC Mohammed Jalige, the public relations officer for the Kaduna State Police Command, did not return his calls or reply to texts sent to him.

The Atiku Abubakar campaign council has declared that Nigeria will become the next African nation to annul a presidential election after allegations of ballot rigging in the recently held elections that resulted in Bola Tinubu, the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), as president-elect.
As you may recall, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced Tinubu as the election’s victor despite protests from rival political parties, who have since sued to overturn the decision.
One of the grounds for dispute by the losing parties was INEC’s failure to electronically transmit the results of the election from 176,606 polling places to a public portal as required by the commission’s regulations and guidelines.
A spokesperson for the Atiku campaign, Daniel Bwala, expressed optimism in a tweet that the February 25, 2023, presidential election in Nigeria will be declared invalid due to purported vote rigging.

After Kenya and Mali, he continued, Nigeria would be the third African nation to annul a presidential election.

In Borno State’s remote community of Mukdolo, Islamist militants launched an attack that left 29 fishermen dead and nine others critically injured.

On March 8, an attack took place in Mukdolo, a local government area in Gamborun.

Sani Kamilu, a state police spokesperson who confirmed the incident, connected the attack to the Boko Haram terrorist organization on Friday.

He claimed that the militants surrounded the village and opened fire on the hard-at-work fishermen.

Nine other fishermen were injured severely but managed to escape while 29 were killed.

The remote Mukdolo village is where the long-running extremist violence is concentrated, so the locals have long since left.

However, occasionally residents of the nearby village of Dikwa travel there to go fishing.

 

“That location has been abandoned, so no one is present there; however, the villagers from Dikwa visit there to fish. Sadly, Boko Haram surrounded the area this time, and they were killed, Kamilu said.

On March 9, some of the bodies from the Wednesday attacks were found and interred, according to Kamilu.

He added that a police officer had died in a different incident.

The government has been tasked by the United Nations (UN) to look into the killing of the villagers.

The UN called the attack “heinous” and “horrendous” in a statement made by Matthias Schmale, the Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria.

The group expressed sympathy to the families of the deceased and wished those who were hurt a speedy recovery.

The UN also urged “all parties to the conflict to adhere to their obligations under international humanitarian and human rights law to protect civilians from harm”.

 

Thousands of civilians have been killed and millions have been displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency in the North, particularly in the Lake Chad region that is shared by Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria.

A 14-year-old insurgency that aims to abolish western education and establish an Islamic state is currently plaguing the nation.

NIPOST fails to deliver printer’s package to Republic of Benin, one year after billing N181,000,

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), according to an ABUJA-based printer named Sola Ogunlola, failed to deliver his shipment to the Benin Republic a year after he allegedly paid the service N181,000 for a waybill.

Ogunlola claimed that early in 2022, he received a request to print some branded nylons for a Mrs. Neo Ale from the Benin Republic.

He received the funding for the project via Western Union.

He was paid for his work and the cost of sending the package to the Benin Republic by mail.

I completed the printing and delivered it to the EMS Post Office Garki Area 10 Abuja to obtain a waybill for the 13th of March 2022 travel to Cotonou, Benin. I paid N181,500 in delivery fees, but the receiver has still not received the nylons.

“The receiver has referred to me, my company, and my nation by a variety of unprintable names and accused me of being a fraudster.

“I don’t want this incident to be overlooked. Ogunlola raged, “Let them refund my money and the nylons if they can’t deliver so the consignment can go another way.
The printer has made fruitless attempts to figure out where the package is.

Ogunlola has had meetings with NIPOST representatives at both the Garki headquarters in Abuja and its Area 10 office.

He claimed that Dickson Ugbomoiko, the director of the Area 10 office, informed him that he was about to retire and that he could not be of much assistance.

He claimed that Ugbomoiko instructed him to get in touch with anyone else he knew at NIPOST who might be able to help him locate the location of the package.

He claimed that even if I went to court, the judge would only compensate me for a portion of the cost of the package I sent, and the case would take a very long time.

He claimed that when the bandits raided the neighborhood and carried out the heinous act, they went directly to the pastor’s home.

The Kogi State Government ordered the arrest and prosecution of people and businesses on Friday who refused to accept the outdated naira notes.

Nigerians were congratulated on the “historic ruling of the Supreme Court” in a statement by Commissioner for Information Kingsley Fanwo.

The old and new naira notes are still legal tender through December 31, 2023, according to a decision made by the apex court last week.

According to Fanwo, the Yahaya Bello administration joined other states in pursuing the case to lessen the hardship brought on by the lack of funding.

Even after the court approved their use, he said it was unacceptable that some people and businesses still refused to accept the old notes.

The commissioner insisted, “Rejecting the old naira notes is a clear disobedience of the Supreme Court ruling.

“Security and government officials should be notified about anyone who refuses to accept the old naira notes for prompt action. Additionally, banks that reject old naira deposits must be sealed.

The government will not permit financial institutions “that willfully disobey court orders, more so, the orders of the highest court in Nigeria,” Fanwo cautioned.

Banks must accept it because they are the ones issuing the old naira notes. After receiving freedom from the Supreme Court, we cannot keep killing our economy.

A powerful committee would be formed, according to the statement, to guarantee complete adherence and compliance with the ruling.

The governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, mocked Rotimi Amaechi on Friday (today) for allegedly supporting Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over Peter Obi of the Labour Party, a member of his tribe, in the recently concluded presidential election.
According to Naija News, Wike was responding to the former minister’s assertion that he has a deep love for the Igbo people.

Amaechi claimed that he has Igbo blood running through his veins while campaigning for the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate this past week in the Diobu neighborhood of Port Harcourt.

He claimed that while he was the State’s Governor, his administration favored the Igbo. Amaechi also criticized Governor Wike’s current leadership in Rivers State, claiming that he was not fair enough to Igbos.

However, in a swift response, Wike questioned how the former governor of Rivers State could claim to love the Igbo and yet refuse to meet with Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, while addressing PDP supporters during a campaign rally prior to the 2023 governorship and State Assembly elections in the State.

You believe yourself to be intelligent, but you are not. Despite claiming to love the Igbo, you backed Atiku. You declined to back Obi. You were supposed to support the Igbos even though you didn’t know them.

“How long have you been a minister, and what have you done for the Igbo? How do you help the Igbo? When he ran for president, Amaechi advocated for the South to gain power, according to Wike.

“After losing, he stopped believing in that and declared that power should go to the North. So that they can give him when the North is finished, Wike continued.

 

According to report, Amaechi ran in the APC presidential primary election in May 2022 but lost the nomination along with other candidates to Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State.

INEC denies LP’s request to witness BVAS reconfiguration

The Labour Party (LP) has come under fire from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for asking to be present when the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System was reconfigured (BVAS).

This comes after the Abuja-based Court of Appeal on March 8 approved the electoral umpire’s request to modify the BVAS system used for the presidential election.

A three-member panel of judges came to the unanimous conclusion that preventing INEC from reconfiguring the voting machines would have a negative impact on the governorship and state assembly elections that were rescheduled for Saturday, March 18.

In response to the ruling, Yunusa Tanko, Chief Spokesperson for the Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign Council, asked that LP be permitted to observe the reconfiguration of BVAS, which INEC claims would require backing up data gathered during the presidential election on February 25.

Tanko stated that the party no longer believed INEC could hold a free and fair election.

Are we allowed or invited to see what was being backed up? he questioned. If there is to be transparency, INEC must invite everyone and their technical experts to view the information the commission intends to support from the original source. Did this get done?

“It is obvious right away that INEC purposefully went to court for BVAS machine reconfiguration after Obi (the LP’s presidential candidate) requested to inspect election materials.

Of course, not even you and I are aware that the commission can currently come up with anything akin to reconfiguration. After we demanded to have those machines inspected, this was done.

Rotimi Oyekanmi, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, asserted that the reconfiguration of BVAS was a matter for the commission’s internal review and was not subject to scrutiny by political parties.

“I find it extremely odd that the Labour Party would express any interest in attending such an event. What do they want to see specifically? Would the party also be interested in seeing the design and printing of the ballots and result sheets?

Political parties were certainly free to observe a BVAS test run, and they did so during the dummy accreditation exercise we conducted prior to the general elections.

Oyekanmi compared it to students insisting on being present while their teachers are choosing the exam questions.

The Inter-Party Advisory Council is something INEC “appreciates and maintains a very cordial relationship with, but the boundaries are well defined and known to both parties,” he continued.

The BVAS reset and data storage in the backup, according to Oyekanmi, would take “about three days” to complete.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) of Osun State has asked the Inspector General of Police Usman Baba to refuse requests to detain PDP officials, and the People’s Democratic Party in the state has urged him to do so.

This was stated by the PDP chapter in Osun state in a statement released in Osogbo on Friday and carried the caretaker committee chairman’s signature.

The PDP warned that such “habitual laziness and opportunistic tendencies will burst out of the roof and throw the country into flames,” according to the statement. The PDP urged the APC to “learn to play politics by the rules and not always scheming to circumvent the will of the people.”

The statement continued, “PDP reckoned that such lazy audacity is dangerous in a determined society where people are poised to exercise their right to vote in the PDP as the only political party walking the talk of their wellbeing as against the APC’s mantra of the force of poverty to suppress and repress the people.

“We caution the APC national secretary, Iyiola Omisore, and his fellow passengers in this latest voyage to exercise restraint and stop underestimating the strength and determination of the good people of Osun State.”

Additionally, the PDP claimed that using the police to intimidate and harass members of the public would be counterproductive.

Additionally, they urged the IG to defy pressure and ignore any accusations brought forth by the APC against the party, arguing that they are wholly unfounded.

The party also asked President Muhammadu Buhari to turn his spotlight on the APC’s plans to use the police to disturb the peace of the state before the upcoming election.

The PDP further demanded that the IGP thoroughly look into APC “political warmongers, whose only route to self-survival is violence and bloodshed,” claiming that the people of Osun should not be taken for granted.

 

The gathering urged the state commissioner of police to conduct himself with professionalism in both personal and professional situations.

Comparing the rate to the N461.25 for which it was exchanged to the dollar on Wednesday, there was an increase of 0.05 percent.

On Thursday, the open indicative rate reached a high of N461.25 to the dollar.

Before it settled at N461, the exchange rate for the day’s trading reached a high of N462.11 to the dollar.

In the course of the day’s trading, the Naira dropped as low as N446 to the dollar.

Trading activity at the official Investors and Exporters window totaled 82.83 million dollars.
