The news was confirmed on Wednesday in Maiduguri by Babakura Abbajatau, the Borno State Commissioner for Home Affairs, Information, and Culture. He acknowledged that the state will make a formal announcement following consultation with the Clark family.

Umar Kadafur, the state’s deputy governor, also offered his condolences, describing Clark’s passing as a tremendous loss for his family, the residents of Southern Borno, and the state overall.

Kadafur went on to say that Clark’s contributions to the growth and development of the state were invaluable and that his passing was a significant loss to the All Progressives Congress (APC) family.

Before running for the Assembly elections, Clark served as the Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation. He resigned from this position on April 25, 2022, to compete in the Chibok State Constituency election under the APC.

Immigration officials detain Peter Obi in London for hours, suspicion impersonation

After his British Airways flight touched down at Heathrow Airport on Friday morning, Obi was reportedly detained for hours and questioned by the authorities.

This was revealed on Wednesday morning by Prof. Chinyere Okunna, a well-known mass communication expert and the deputy vice chancellor of Paul University in Awka.
Okunna, who worked with Obi as commissioner for information, commissioner for economic planning and coordinating commissioner for development partners said Obi who lived honourably in the UK narrated the ordeal to her in private, and expressed pain about his ordeal, and others, which is meant to hound and chase him out of Nigeria.

Okunna said: “I suppose he told me all this confidentially. My very sincere apologies, Your Excellency, for ‘breaking’ this confidentiality, but History beckons and I CANNOT KEEP QUIET.

“Obi spoke to me at the Official Opening of the Specialist Hospital of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) Sisters, Nkpor (on Tuesday). He had arrived at the event after flying in from London.

“I actually had no idea he had travelled out of the country, until the ovation over his presence in a London Church went viral on the Internet.

“He arrived at Heathrow Airport and joined the usual queue to pass through Immigration, and that was when his ordeal began.

“He was stopped and questioned for a long time and subsequently handed a detention note and told to wait for further interrogation and investigation.

“This was terribly unusual for a man who had lived honourably in the UK for a long time.

“In the face of this harassment, some well-meaning Nigerians, knowing who he is, raised their voices in protest, demanding to know why he was being treated that way.”

Okunna revealed that in the face of seeming protest by some Nigerians, the immigration officials revealed that someone was impersonating Obi in the country.

“The shocking revelation by the Immigration Officer was that his (Obi’s) identity ‘was duplicated’. This revelation has definitely set off alarm bells.

“For people who are knowledgeable about such matters, this is a very dangerous development because the implication is that someone is impersonating Peter Obi.

“And that someone could implicate Obi in all manner of dubious and even criminal activities, and rope him into any number of offences; he could get Obi framed for one criminal act or another. The frightening scenario of what can happen is unimaginable!!!

“This is the height of it all for a man who has been under sundry intimidation and emotional torture: Bugging of his phone and those of his wife and children; keeping him constantly under surveillance; calling him names; putting him under severe pressure to leave (run away from) the country; wrongly accusing him of negative things he knows absolutely nothing about, etc.

“As he was telling me his ‘Heathrow tale of woe’ at Nkpor today, I could see a man who was in severe pain and under unbearable stress, who many would expect to be at the point of despair.

“But, as he confirmed, he is ready to suffer this pain and is as determined as ever to pursue the path which he has chosen to enable him arrive at the destination which well-meaning people in Nigeria and far far beyond are expecting him to arrive at.”

Kogi is not Rivers, will not worship foreign god, Melaye responds to Wike’s shots

Dino Melaye, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for governor in Kogi State, struck back against Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State, for dismissing his bid to succeed Governor Yahaya Bello.

Wike had downplayed the former Kogi West senator’s chances in the PDP governorship primary in the North-Central state during a press conference in Port Harcourt.

You know Dino won’t win in Kogi State when you give him that ticket, he said.

Why would residents of Kogi claim they would support a candidate like Dino? Are you serious?

Melaye, however, reminded the governor that Kogi is not Rivers State, where he has the power to select his successor, in a message posted to his verified Facebook page on Tuesday.
He insisted that such an authority instead belongs to God.

The former federal lawmaker expressed surprise that Wike has suddenly become the self-appointed public office regulator who could determine what would happen in states.

He wrote: “On recovering from his inebriation, Wike should be reminded that Kogi is not Rivers, and the people of Kogi State would not worship any foreign god.

“Above all, Wike should also understand that power belongs to God, and he gives it to whoever he wants, even the basest of men.

“Today, Wike can take a swipe at me, and mark me down as unqualified to govern my state, but has he forgotten that he believed my gubernatorial aspiration in 2019?

“ Can he be reminded that I have served as a member of the Federal House of Representatives and have also been elected twice into the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria?”

INEC asks tribunal to reject LP, Obi’s petition, in order to uphold Tinubu’s election victory

0

The Labour Party and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, filed a petition, which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has asked the presidential election petition tribunal to dismiss for being incompetent.

After receiving 8,794,726 votes to defeat Obi and 16 other candidates in the election held on February 25, the commission declared Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC), the winner on March 1.

Atiku Abubakar, the candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), came in second with 6,984,520 votes, while the candidate for the Liberation Party (LP), finished third with 6,101,533 votes.

In a different petition, Abubakar and the PDP are also contesting the election’s results.

In the petition marked: CA/PEPC/03/2023 filed by Obi and LP’s lead counsel, Livy Ozoukwu, they contended that Tinubu “was not duly elected by a majority of the lawful votes cast at the time of the election.” The petitioners claimed that the poll was rigged in 11 states, adding that they would demonstrate this in the declaration of results based on the uploaded results. They insisted that INEC violated its own regulations when it announced the result despite the fact that at the time of the announcement, the totality of the polling unit results had yet to be fully scanned, uploaded, and transmitted electronically as required by the Electoral Act, among others. INEC made the call for the dismissal of the LP petition in its reply filed on Monday night at the tribunal’s secretariat in Abuja by its lawyer, Abubakar Mahmoud (SAN). The commission urged the court to either “dismiss or strike out the petition for being grossly incompetent, abusive, vague, nebulous, generic, general, non-specific, ambiguous, equivocal, hypothetical and academic.” INEC argued that the grounds on which the petition was based were defective, having regard to the vague and imprecise averments supporting the said grounds. It said the ground of the petitioners bordering on non-compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022 and corrupt practices did not disclose a reasonable cause of action for failure to plead specific particulars and figures as to how the alleged non-compliance complained of substantially affected the results of the election. “Prayers 3, 5(i) and 5(11) of the petition predicated on the ground of non-compliance in Paragraph 20(11) of the petition are ungrantable,” the commission declared.

APC files its own lawsuit, requests tribunal reject Obi, LP’s petition against Tinubu

0

On Monday, the All Progressives Congress (APC) requested that the Labour Party (LP) and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, withdraw their petition to the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) in Abuja challenging Bola Tinubu’s election as the nation’s 45th president.

In a notice of preliminary objection signed CA/PEPC/03/2023 and submitted to the PEPC Secretariat on Monday night by Thomas Ojo, a member of the party’s legal team in Abuja under the direction of Lateef Fagbemi, the APC, the fourth respondent, urged the PEPC to reject the petition.

The party asked the tribunal to dismiss the petition with substantial cost on the grounds that it lacked merit and was frivolous.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mr Obi, the 1st petitioner, and LP, the 2nd petitioner, had sued the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mr Tinubu, Kashim Shettima and APC as 1st to 4th respondents respectively.

The petitioners are seeking the nullification of the election victory of Messrs Tinubu and Shettima in the 25 February presidential poll.

NAN reports that while former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) came second with 6,984,520 votes in the election. Mr Obi came third with 6,101,533 votes.

Atiku and the PDP are also challenging the outcome of the poll.

In the petition marked: CA/PEPC/03/2023 filed by Mr Obi and LP’s lead counsel, Livy Ozoukwu, they contended that Mr Tinubu “was not duly elected by majority of the lawful votes cast at the time of the election.”

The petitioners claimed there was rigging in 11 states, adding that they would demonstrate this in the declaration of results based on the uploaded results.

Mr Obi and LP said INEC violated its own regulations when it announced the result despite the fact that at the time of the announcement, the totality of the polling unit results had yet to be fully scanned, uploaded and transmitted electronically as required by the Electoral Act.

Among other prayers, the petitioners urged the tribunal to “determine that, at the time of the presidential election held on February 25, 2023, the 2nd and 3rd respondents (Tinubu and Shettima) were not qualified to contest the election.

“That it be determined that all the votes recorded for the 2nd respondent in the election are wasted votes, owing to the non-qualification of the 2nd and 3rd respondents.

“That it be determined that on the basis of the remaining votes (after discountenancing the votes credited to the 2nd respondent) the 1st petitioner (Obi) scored a majority of the lawful votes cast at the election and had not less than 25 per cent of the votes cast in each of at least two-thirds of the states of the federation and the FCT and satisfied the constitutional requirements to be declared the winner of the Feb. 25 presidential election.

“That it be determined that the 2nd respondent (Tinubu), having failed to score one-quarter of the votes cast at the presidential election in the FCT was not entitled to be declared and returned as the winner of the presidential election held on Feb. 25.”

Responding, the APC asked the court to dismiss the suit on the ground that Mr Obi, the 1st petitioner, lacked requisite “locus standi” to institute the petition because he was not a member of LP at least 30 days to the party’s presidential primary to be validly sponsored by the party.

It said: “The 1st petitioner (Obi) was a member of PDP until May 24, 2022.

“1st petitioner was screened as a presidential aspirant of the PDP in Apni 2022.

“1st petitioner participated and was cleared to contest the presidential election while being a member of the PDP.

“1st petitioner purportedly resigned his membership of PDP on May 24, 2022 to purportedly join the 2nd petitioner (Labour Party) on May 27, 2022.

“2nd petitioner conducted its presidential primary on May 30, 2022 which purportedly produced 1st petitioner as its candidate, which time contravened Section 77(3) of the Electoral Act for him to contest the primary election as a member of the 2nd petitioner.”

The party argued that Obi was not a member of LP at the time of his alleged sponsorship.

The APC argued that “by the mandatory provisions of Section 77 (1) (2) and (3) of the Electoral Act 2022, a political party shall maintain a register and shall make such register available to INEC not later than 30 days before the date fixed for the party primaries, congresses and convention.”

It stated further that all the PDP’s presidential candidates were screened on 29 April 29, an exercise Mr Obi participated in and cleared to contest while being a member of the party.

It argued that the petition was incompetent since Mr Obi’s name could not have been in LP’s register made available to INEC at the time he joined the party.

The APC equally argued that the petition was improperly constituted having failed to join Atiku Abubakar and PDP who were necessary parties to be affected by the reliefs sought

“By Paragraph 17 of the petition, the petitioners, on their own, stated that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar came second in the presidential election with 6,984,520 votes as against the petitioners who came third with 6,101,533 votes;

“At Paragraph 102 (ii) of the petition, the petitioners urged the tribunal to determine that 1st petitioner scored the majority of lawful votes without joining Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in the petition.

“For the tribunal to grant prayer (iii) of the petitioners, the tribunal must have set aside the scores and election of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar,

“Alhaji Atiku Abubakar must be heard before his votes can be discountenanced by the tribunal,” it said.

The party said the petition and the identified paragraphs were in breach of the mandatory provisions of Paragraph 4(1)(D) of the 1st Schedule to the Electoral Act, 2022.

According to APC, Paragraphs 60 — 77 of the petition are non-specific, vague and/or nebulous and thereby incompetent contrary to Paragraph 4(1)(d) of the Ist Schedule to the Electoral Act, 2022.

It said that the allegations of non-compliance must be made distinctly and proved on a polling unit basis but none was specified or provided in any of the paragraphs of the petition.

“Paragraphs 59-60 of the petition disclose no identity or particulars of scores and polling units supplied in 18,088 units mentioned therein,” it added.

The party, therefore, argued that the tribunal lacked the requisite jurisdiction to entertain pre-election complaints embedded in the petition as presently constituted, among other arguments.

The APC urged the tribunal to dismiss the petition with substantial cost as the same was devoid of any merit and founded on frivolity.
