Police free Ogun journalist 72 hours after kidnappers demanded N30m in ransom

Oduneye Oluwaseun, a journalist, was freed from captors 72 hours after being taken hostage by gunmen in the Ijebu Ode region of the State by Ogun State Police Command agents.

On Thursday night around 7:50 p.m., Oduneye, the state’s publisher of Issues Magazine, was kidnapped in his Toyota Camry as he was driving back from a trip to Abeokuta, the state’s capital.

But on Saturday, he was freed unscathed after a 45-minute gunfight between the kidnappers and security personnel in Lagos State’s Idimu axis of the local government area of Egbeda.

The victim’s wife was contacted by Oduneye’s captors on Friday through the victim’s phone line, and they demanded N30 million in ransom before they would release him, according to the Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the development to journalists on Monday.

But in response to his wife’s report, the state’s chief of police, Frank Mba, gave the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) at Obalende, Ijebu Ode, Murphy Salami, jurisdiction over the area where the incident occurred, the order to ensure Oduneye’s safe release from his captors.

In solidarity with Governor Ademola Adeleke, top PDP officials and supporters stormed the Abuja Court of Appeal early on Monday morning.

Over 15 members of the governor’s legal team were also present in court.

A 15-person delegation from all three senatorial districts in Osun, members of the State Working Committee, the Abuja leadership of the Imole Movement, and the acting state chairman of the PDP, Dr. Adekunle Akindele, led the party leadership.

More than 20 of the governor’s friends from abroad and the governor’s media team, which is headed by his Senior Special Assistant, were also present.
Speaking to reporters outside the courthouse, Akindele stated that the governor’s team has implicit faith in the judiciary’s ability to uphold the will of the Osun people. She also stated that the governor and the PDP have a compelling case before the Appeal Court.

“For the court proceedings, we have traveled from all over Osun State and beyond. As you can see, the governor and PDP are both strongly represented. A legal gathering is taking place here. But the top members of our party are visible everywhere in this area,” he said.

“We trust the legal system. We are firmly convinced that justice will be served. The leadership of the party as well as the residents of Osun state overwhelmingly support the state governor. He is making the PDP proud as an effective governor.

Five Human Parts Dealers Confess To Exhuming Corpses From Graves In Ogun

Five alleged human parts traffickers, who specialize in exhuming corpses, have been detained by the Ogun State Police Command.
Abimbola Oyeyemi, the state police public relations officer, reportedly revealed this in a statement on Sunday.

The suspects, Oshole Fayemi, 60, Osemi Adesanya, 39, Ismaila Seidu, 30, Oseni Oluwasegun, 69, and Lawal Olaiya, 50, were detained on Saturday at their hiding places as they prepared to conduct an operation.

Following information received at the Odogbolu Divisional Headquarters that the gang planned to conduct another round of human parts harvest, the police allegedly stormed the gang’s location.

In the Ososa community in the state’s Odogbolu Local Government Area, many corpses were exhumed from graves for ritual purposes, according to Oyeyemi, who claimed the suspects had made confessional statements.

According to the police spokesman, the suspects will now be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a covert investigation and potential prosecution at the direction of state commissioner of police Frank Mba.

The Divisional Police Officer of the Odogbolu Division, CSP Godwin Idehai, mobilized his men in response to the information and stormed the suspects’ hideout, where five of them were captured, according to Oyeyemi.

“During questioning, the suspects made confessional statements indicating that they were engaged in the business of exhuming corpses from their graves and that they had previously sold parts of such corpses to their standby customers who needed them for money-making rituals.”

However, the statement said, “Embedded in ECWA’s neutrality is our total objection to any same faith ticket – whether Christian-Christian or Muslim-Muslim ticket – in line with the same objection that the national headquarters of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed.

The Peter Obi-Yusuf Datti Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) has stated that its supporters will not back down from their planned nationwide protest unless the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) grants their lawyers access to materials from the disputed February 25 presidential election.

According to report, INEC declared the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Tinubu, the winner of the election on March 1.

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the commission’s Chairman, announced the results, saying Tinubu received the most votes (8,794,726), while Atiku received 6,984,520 votes, Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) received 6,101,533 votes, and Rabi’u Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) received 1,496,687 votes.

The presidential election featured 18 candidates in total.

The Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had both rejected the election results during the collation process, before Mr Tinubu was declared the winner.

Both parties have also filed legal challenges to the electoral process and Tinubu’s victory.

They also chastised the electoral commission for failing to post polling unit results on the INEC result viewing (IReV) portal before the results were collated.

The parties insisted that it is part of the commission’s repeated promises and is supported by some section of the Electoral Act 2022.

Yunusa Tanko, the spokesperson for the Obi-Datti campaign council, told the press that they would not back down from their plan to mobilize supporters to occupy INEC offices across the country.

Tanko accused INEC of violating the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal’s order to provide Obi and the party with certified true copies of materials used in the election’s conduct.

“We didn’t set a date for the protest because we wanted to give INEC until Monday to respond to us first.

“But when they (INEC) fail to do what they are supposed to do, our supporters will hit the streets, by the grace of God. “There is no turning back,” he declared.

Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s presidential candidate, and other party leaders protested INEC last week in Abuja.

CBN’s new instruction to banks on old Naira notes

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has directed commercial banks to dispense old Naira notes and accept them as deposits from customers.

Commercial bank tellers will generate deposit codes, and there is no limit to the number of times an individual or company can make deposits.

Godwin Emefiele, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, issued the directive at a Bankers’ Committee meeting on Sunday.

“Emefiele personally confirmed the above to me during a phone conversation on Sunday night,” according to the Governor of Anambra State.

The governor urged Anambra State residents to freely accept and transact business with both old and new currency notes (N200, N500, and N1,000).

“Residents should report any bank that refuses to accept deposits in old notes. The Anambra State Government will not only report such a bank to the CBN, but will also shut down the defaulting branch immediately,” Governor Soludo added in his statement.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has warned commercial banks against approving Gov. Samuel Ortom of Benue’s loan request because his term is set to expire on May 29.

The Rivers State branch of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has given the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) a notice demanding that it provide it with certain electoral documents in order to respond to petitions filed with the Elections Petitions Tribunal within the next 72 hours.
In Port Harcourt, the request was included in a statement that was distributed by Darlington Nwauju, who serves as the State Publicity Secretary.

 

 

Nwauju claimed that the commission’s office in the state had denied the party’s request to gain access to certain documents that were used for the election that had just taken place for the National Assembly.

The leader of the APC made the allegation that Mike Odeh, the head of operations for INEC in Rivers State, is conspiring with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state to refuse the request made by the APC.

Nwauju, who compared Odeh’s actions to stealing, stated that the party’s 72-hour notice was for the headquarters of INEC to direct the state office to provide hit with the required documents requested. Nwauju also compared Odeh’s actions to stealing.

However, he warned that failure to comply would result in members of the party obstructing access to the commission’s headquarters in the state of Rivers.

Nwauju stated that “The All Progressives Congress in Rivers State had applied for the Certified True Copies of forms EC8A, EC8B, and EC8C and other documents incidental to the recently conducted National Assembly elections in the state in which results were mutilated and or forged in favor of the Peoples Democratic Party in areas where our party clearly won and our candidates should have been declared winners if INEC had kept its promise of uploading results from the polling units to the IReV

“Instructively, the said Head of Operations has consciously and viciously erected a wall to ensure that he frustrates the moves of the APC in Rivers State to retrieve the stolen mandates of our National Assembly candidates. This is in violation of both the civil service rules and the guidelines established by INEC, as well as the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended).”
