FG reveals barite processing facility, announces import ban

0

Through the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, the Federal Government has opened a barite processing facility in Cross River State in an effort to restrict barite imports and encourage domestic production.

The Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Olamilekan Adegbite, mentioned the importance of the barite processing plant’s location in Ugaga, Cross State, when he spoke at the plant’s opening.

He began by saying, “I am pleased to address you on this August event, which marks the commissioning of the Barite Processing Plant in Ugaga, Cross River State, South-South, Nigeria.

“The choice of Ugaga, as a location for the barite processing plant, is predicated on its possession of rich deposits of barite among the South-South State and its proximity to Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where the processed barites are required for oil exploration in line with local content and value addition policy in Nigeria.”

He claims that because the barite processing facility is situated in Ugaga, small-scale and artisanal barite miners within the region can easily gain access to the facility for their barite processing before further transportation and sales.

Dr. Oluwatoyin Akinlade, the ministry’s permanent secretary, mentioned in her remarks that the facility would process barite in accordance with the international API standard, making it suitable for export to other regions of the world in order to generate foreign exchange.

The made-in-Nigeria barite was introduced by the Federal Government in October 2021 with the claim that it would allow the nation to avoid paying foreign exchange to import the product.

In oil and gas drilling, barite is used as a weighting material primarily to stop the explosive release of gas and oil during drilling.

The Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, Simbi Wabote, made the announcement during the launch in 2021. He stated that starting in 2022, the Nigerian oil and gas industry would not be able to use imported barites.

The barite processing plant’s commissioning was an effort to promote barite made in Nigeria even though the ban has not yet been put into effect.

Investors may start competing for Nigeria’s over 20 million metric tons of barite reserves, according to a report from The PUNCH last year.

According to rumors, the Federal Government was collaborating with TotalEnergies to make investments in the country’s barite reserves.

Additionally, professional organizations like the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists and universities with petroleum engineering programs in Nigerian states with barite reserves were said to be involved in the project.

Residents of Abuja file a lawsuit to stop Tinubu’s inauguration.

As some residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have dragged the president-elect Bola Tinubu before the federal high court sitting in Abuja, asking the court to stop his inauguration, there doesn’t appear to be any end in sight to the ongoing controversies surrounding the May 29 swearing-in.

In the lawsuit with the file number FHC/ABJ/CS/578/2023, the plaintiffs requested a court order prohibiting “the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, any other judicial officer and/or any other authority or person from swearing in any candidate in the February 25 presidential election as President or Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, until such time as judicial determination is made with finality or in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution that such candida

“An order setting aside or suspending any declaration and/or issuance of a Certificate of a Return to any candidate in the country’s February 25 presidential election as having been elected, save and except it is judicially determined with finality that such candidate fulfilled the conditions stated in section 134(2) (b) of the Constitution,” is another option.

Peter Obi: Mahmood Yakubu Worked For Me Before Becoming INEC Chairman

0

In the most recent election, Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), was a former employee of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate.

He gave a speech on Friday in the state of Anambra at the publication of the book “Peter Obi: Many Voices, One Perspective.”

Obi said he was not compelled to be the leader and urged people to always do what is right.

“I spent three years fighting the legal system in Anambra to reclaim my governorship. Many people tried to dissuade me, but I responded that even if it takes the entire four years for us to establish our case and change the system, I will be happy.

“Let’s do what is right, is my position. I always make it clear to people that I won’t give them money to commit crimes. Prof. Mahmood was a member of the committee I chaired, the TETFUND committee. We are familiar with one another, but I have never met him since he became INEC chairman. You’re an umpire, just do what’s right, I told him.

“If you have the chance to act morally but choose not to, eventually everyone will be consumed by anarchy. I’m adamant that we must act morally, ” Obi said.

The former governor of Anambra state has refused to accept defeat since Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the APC was declared the winner, and he is currently contesting the results of the election at the 2023 presidential election petition tribunal in Abuja.

Inauguration: Buhari Moves to Glass House

0

In the wake of President Muhammadu Buhari’s move into the Glass House at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, preparations for the inauguration of Bola Tinubu, the president-elect, have kicked into high gear. Tinubu will take office on May 29, 2019.

During the period of transition from one presidency to the next, it is believed that the former president and his or her spouse have made use of the historic residence as a temporary residence.

The Glass House has also traditionally played an important part in the transition of power by serving as a symbolic and practical space for the outgoing president and their spouse to reside in during their time in the White House.

After giving Senator Remi Tinubu, who will become the next First Lady of Nigeria, a tour of the State House, the current First Lady, Aisha Buhari, revealed this information in a video that she posted to her Instagram page.

Since only Aisha Buhari and her husband currently reside there, the outgoing first lady expressed her opinion that the house should continue its time-honored tradition of only housing the incumbent president and their spouse during the period of transition.

During the tour, Aisha Buhari took Senator Remi Tinubu to various parts of the house and provided him with in-depth explanations about the significance and history of each area they visited.

She stated, “I have shown Senator Remi Tinubu, who will serve as the new First Lady, around. She has already been to the main house; at this point, we are at the well-known glass house. The Glass House serves as a temporary residence for the president-elect after their term in office has ended.

“I’m advising that the Glass House should continue to uphold its tradition of serving as a transition for the president who is leaving office. My husband and I have made our home in this location at the moment that we are having this conversation with you. There are only two of us here, and I believe that this should continue to be the case as a standard both for this institution and for this house.

As a result of the event, Senator Tinubu was left feeling humbled and impressed at the same time. She was able to take in an overwhelming amount of information in a relatively short amount of time.

Godswill Akpabio: Against Tinubu, 5 APC senators declare war with reason

The All Progressives Congress (APC), the party in power, has been shaken by the micro-zoning of the leadership of the 10th National Assembly, and five senators have threatened to rebel in opposition to the party’s and the president-elect Bola Tinubu’s decision.

At a meeting with the APC leadership and members of its national working committee in Abuja on Thursday, May 11, The Punch reported that senior senators and candidates for the position of the next senate president made the threat.

The senators warned, among other things, that open rebellion would result if the party did not reverse its decision and zone the position to geopolitical regions.

This is because they would openly defy the APC decision.

The APC zoned the 10th senate presidency to the south-south on Tuesday, and in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Felix Morka, stated that Godswill Akpabio, the recently-retired minister of Niger Delta Affairs, was its preferred candidate.

Morka clarified that the party’s choice was made after consultation with Bola Tinubu, the president-elect, and other interested parties.

The list of the five senators who issued the threat is as follows:

The next senate president should be zoned to the northwest, according to Abdulaziz Yari Yari, a former governor of the state of Zamfara.

Despite being a new senator, Yari had argued that the region had given the APC the most votes in the 2023 presidential election.

Mr. Osita Izunaso

He is the newly elected senator from Imo state, one of the powerful states in the southeast.

Some political commentators have suggested that the region ought to produce the next senator, while others have countered that they are not deserving because they did not support the APC in the recent presidential election.

Sani Musa

Musa is a senator serving his second term from Niger State, one of the important states in the north-central, who is also requesting that their region be given the next senate presidency.

The senator has gained notoriety for having sponsored the contentious social media bill that was thought to censor media content.

A. Umar Sadiq

Currently serving as the Kwara north senatorial district’s representative in the departing 9th National Assembly is another senator from Kwara state’s north central region.

He was also re-elected, and he will take office as a senator for the 10th Senate.

Inji Uzor Kalu

The senator from Abia North is one of the well-known and seasoned members of the Red Chamber who had previously expressed interest in the position.

Currently serving as the Senate Chief Whip is Kalu, a powerful senator from the Southeast. Ifeoma, his wife, recently passed away there.

According to reports, the race for the next senate president has already begun, especially in light of the recent revelation of the micro-zoning of the position by the incumbent All Progressives Congress (APC). Over time, many political experts have suggested that the southeast would be the best choice for bringing the country together, but the APC has zoned the position to the South-South and declared Godswill Akpabio as its preferred candidate.

Nigeria’s monthly debt servicing spending reaches $112.35m says CBN

0

According to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Federal Government incurred expenses totaling 112,35 million dollars in order to service its external debt in January of 2023.

According to information found in the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Weekly International Payments report, the amount of money spent in January was 146.17 percent higher than the $45.64 million that was spent in December.

This took place at a time when the federal government was having trouble increasing its revenue base despite its efforts to generate more revenue.

It is important to remember that in January of 2023, the Federation Account Allocation Committee distributed N750.17 billion among the three levels of government.

When compared to the total amount of N990.19 billion that was distributed in December 2022, this figure represents a decrease of N240.02 billion.

The amount of money that Nigeria spent to service its external debt in 2022 was $2.41 billion, which is a moderate increase from the $2.11 billion that was spent in 2021.

During this time, the Federal Government reduced the allocations it had made to the states for the purpose of servicing the states’ external debt by more than N78 billion.

This information was obtained from the reports on expenditures made by the Federation Account Allocation Committee that were made public by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The deductions were taken in the year 2022 from the allocations that were handed out by the Federation Account to the various state governments.

Currently, the federation account is being managed according to a legal framework that enables funds to be shared according to three major components. These components are the statutory allocation, the distribution of value-added tax, and the derivation principle.

According to the findings of the checks, Lagos was the state that was affected by the deductions the most, with approximately N23.61 billion being deducted in 2022 for the purpose of servicing external debt.

After that, Kaduna had N10.25 billion deducted from their total, and Cross River had N7.56 billion taken away from their total.

Recently, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) reported that the United States Federal Government projected to spend 82% of its revenue on interest payments in the year 2023.

The International Monetary Fund forecasts that total external debt, which will include the amount owed by the private sector, will reach $121.6 billion, while total external reserves will increase to $37.5 billion.

This information was provided in a projections table that was included in the report titled “IMF Executive Board Concludes 2022 Article IV Consultation with Nigeria Summary.”

According to the projections, the percentage of the government’s revenue that was used to pay interest will decrease from 96.3 percent in 2022 to 82 percent in 2023. This represents an improvement from the previous year’s percentage, which stood at 96.3 percent.

In addition, it stated that the payment of interest accounted for 86.1 percent and 87.8 percent of the revenue of the federal government in the years 2020 and 2021 respectively.

Senate presidency: Adamu tells Orji Kalu, Yari to hold their fire as they hand him letter of grievance to him

Senate chief whip Uzor Orji Kalu, Abdulaziz Yari, senator-elect, and Mohammed Musa, senator representing Niger East, have lodged a complaint against the nominations made by the All Progressives Congress (APC) for leadership positions in the senate. These three individuals are the senators representing Niger East.

Godswill Akpabio, a former minister of Niger Delta affairs, and Barau Jibrin, a senator representing Kano north, were the candidates for the presidency and vice presidency of the Senate, respectively, that the party had nominated.

During a meeting on Thursday in Abuja with Abdullahi Adamu, the national chairman of the APC, Yari stated that they are not satisfied with the arrangement.
According to Yari, a former governor of Zamfara, the senators are interested in having a level playing field.

After handing over a letter of protest, he addressed the assembly, saying, “We are here to present our letter of grievances to you and also tell this honorable house that as leaders, we are not satisfied with the arrangement.” He went on to say that the leaders were unhappy with the arrangement.

“What we are expecting from you people is to give us fair play, or at the very least, if nothing else, to mention that a particular position is zoned and that anybody in that zone can’t participate.”

Regarding his own role, Adamu stated that the leadership of the party would review their letter in order to address their complaints.

“Hold the fire until the last word is heard from us, we are the custodians of the party as NWC, but we are not acting alone. Hold the fire until the last word is heard from us. Adamu stated that the voice of Tinubu, who is set to become president, is an important voice.

We need to make it as convenient for him as possible. In regard to that, I will not make any concessions. He is currently traveling outside of the country, and when he returns, by the grace of God, we will revisit the problem, put our heads together once more, and determine what kind of solution we can come up with.

“I am not in a position to anticipate that, so I will hold off until after we have that conversation with the president-elect.”

APC will review contentious zoning plan for 10th Assembly: Umahi

0

As senators and members of the house of representatives continued to vehemently push back against it, the governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi, declared that the National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) would review the contentious zoning template for the 10th National Assembly.

Any Nigerian who has been purposefully left out of the country’s larger plans cannot be expected to be patriotic, according to the governor of Ebonyi State, who is also a senator-elect.

Umahi said that Nigeria should be seen as a country where the leadership must sit down and make a deliberate decision to do things differently while responding to questions from journalists at the ongoing induction program for members-elect of the National Assembly organized by the National Assembly and National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) in Abuja.

He asserted that in order to build a country that would be based on equity, fairness, and justice for the overall interest of all the regions of the nation, all six geopolitical zones of the country must engage in dialogue where each zone should be asked what it wants, the problems affecting the zones, and the way forward.

“Democracy is all about finding solutions to all newly arising conflicts. Unavoidable controversies have resulted from our party’s stance. The party would have adopted any position that would have sparked debates or criticism.

“I believe that the party and our leadership have the ability and wisdom to work out any issues that may arise. I have no doubt that they are working on it.

“I’ve said that patriotism should serve as the nation’s baseline. However, if you are being deliberately left out, you cannot be asked to show patriotism. The leadership must take a seat and consciously decide to change the way things are done in order for the nation to be seen as one.

“We need to consult with each zone to learn what their needs are. Discussion and conversation must be sparked. I think that will enable us to solve whatever the issue in the regions may be.

“Our leadership as well as the three branches of the government must be able to sit down and communicate. Nigeria must be prioritized, and we must decide to do so.

Everyone will start to think of this country as their own and start putting Nigeria first because they are a part of the Nigeria project because that is the foundation, built on equity, fairness, and justice.

Without equity, fairness, and justice, there can never be patriotism in this nation. To be patriotic, I must ensure that my own community is upheld, which is why many people refrain from returning to the National Assembly because projects are not carried out in their best interests.

“The public views lawmakers as though they were in charge of carrying out projects,” Accordingly, there ought to be a way to have executive projects located in their regions, so you can use that to leverage on coming back and not squander this experience we gather from here, Umahi said.
