Sokoto State Governore appoints transitional committee with 28 members

To oversee the transition from his administration to that of his successor, Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has appointed a transition committee with 28 members.

The Secretary to the State Government of Sokoto State, Muhammad Mainasara Ahmad, made a statement about the development.

“It is to notify for general information that the State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has approved the appointment of the Transition Committee for the smooth handover to the Incoming Administration,” the statement reads.

The committee’s mandate is to compile and document the accomplishments reported by the current administration from 2015 to 2023 by the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs). Obtain reports from MDAs on all active projects and programmes and analyse them for factors such as level of execution, financial profile, and constraints.

A detailed handover note to the incoming administration must be ready by Monday, May 15, 2023, it was further stated.

Additionally, the next administration must coordinate a fitting swearing-in ceremony with the help of the incoming administration’s team and make all other necessary preparations to ensure that they get off to a quick and successful start.

Senator Aisha Binani Dahiru, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for governor of Adamawa, and the Party have filed an exparte motion before the Federal High Court in Abuja asking for a judicial review of the administrative decision made by the Independent National Electoral Commision (INEC) on April 16 regarding the declaration of her as the winner of the March 18 and April 15 elections.

Recall that on Sunday, the state’s resident electoral commissioner, Hudu Yususa, declared Binani the victor of the governorship election, sparking controversy.

However, INEC jumped in and declared the declaration to be invalid.

The REC, Yususa, was subsequently suspended starting on Monday.

However, Senator Binani is not happy with INEC’s decision and has petitioned the court for an order of prohibition and certiorari to stop the Commision and its officials from proceeding with the declaration of the election winner while her request for judicial review is being considered.

The application was filed in accordance with Order 34 Rules 1a, Order 3(1) and 3(2) a, b, and c, Order 6 of the Federal High Court (Civil Procedure Rules) 2019, Section 251 (1)q and r of the 1999 Constitution, and Sections 149 and 152 of the Electoral Act 2022.

The application pointed out that, as the only court with the authority to do so from the conduct of an election, INEC is usurping the powers of the election petition by cancelling the initial declaration.

However, the Peoples Democratic Party, or PDP, protested on Monday, urging INEC to keep compiling results.

When Senator Dino Melaye won the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) nomination for governor of Kogi State on November 11, former deputy governor of Kogi State Abayomi Awoniyi characterized it as a serious threat to the party.

This was revealed in a statement on Monday by Awoniyi, a candidate in the PDP governorship primary election that will be held on Sunday, April 16, 2023.

The former deputy governor claimed that Melaye wasn’t chosen as the party’s nominee because the PDP primary wasn’t free and fair. He also claimed that the election was invalid.

Awoniyi further claimed that 158 of the contest’s 739 votes had already been given to Senator Dino Melaye, hurting the chances of eight other candidates, claiming that the victory of Senator Melaye was a pyrrhic one.

He also claimed that one of the delegates who cast a ballot during the PDP primary had previously supported the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in the recently completed House of Assembly elections.

Another illegally imported delegate, Awoniyi continued, is a resident of and a native of a different ward than the one where his name first surfaced.

The primary that produced Senator Melaye had problems, according to the statement. The pathetic Sen. Abdul Ningi Congress Committee, which collaborated with Senator Dino Melaye’s highest-ranking enablers within the party hierarchy, replaced the 158 delegates who had emerged from the State Ad-hoc Congress of March 29, 2023.

It is not a fair contest when one candidate receives 158 votes overall in a contest with 739 votes and 8 candidates. It gives the favored aspirant an unfair advantage, making it fraudulent, dishonest, sinful, and unwholesome. After a rigged primary, Sen. Dino Melaye won.

Two LGAs, Yagba West and Kabba/Bunu, which are unquestionably my strongholds for the primary elections, are represented by 62 of the 158 delegates imported. A total of 29 of the 46 delegates in Senator Melaye’s LGA, Ijumu, were changed.

According to Awoniyi, if the delegate list from the Ad-hoc Delegates Congress of March 29, 2023, had been used for the primary on April 16, 2023, the election would have been deemed a free, fair, and transparent process.

Abayomi Awoniyi received 77 votes, according to the reports, while Senator Dino Melaye received 313 votes, making him the winner of the PDP governorship primary election that took place on Sunday.

PDP suspends Sekibo, Atiku ally, others for anti-party activities

George Thompson Sekibo, a senator for the state’s South East Senatorial District, has been placed on administrative leave by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) executive in Ward 2 of Rivers’ Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area due to alleged anti-party activity.

Alatoru Sydney, the PDP Ward 2 Ogu-Bolo LGA Chairman, and Joshua Tamuno, the council Secretary, reportedly announced the suspension in a statement on Sunday.
According to the statement, Sekibo, a supporter of PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, has been expelled from the party along with Navy Capt. Victor Erasmus, Hon. Gilbert Enos, Sunny Asetubobe, and Eugene Enos.

In an executive meeting where a review of the most recent elections for the president, the national assembly, the governorship, and the state house of assembly was conducted, it was further stated that the decision to suspend the PDP chieftains had been made.

‘It was observed with dismay that the anti-party activities of the suspended party stalwarts of Ward 2 of Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area as they worked against the PDP.’ reads the statement.

As stated in section 8 subsection 9 of the PDP constitution 2017 as amended, “The Ward 2 Executive of the PDP also found out that the aforementioned suspended members of the PDP have failed to pay their annual subscription fees, hence the vote of no confidence and suspension.”

Similar to the aforementioned stalwarts from Ward 2, the PDP Executive of Ward 10 Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area also passed a vote of no confidence and suspended Navy Capt. Victor Erasmus, Hon. Gilbert Enos, and Eugene Enos from the PDP for the same reasons—anti-party activities and failure to pay the annual subscription fee.

In addition, the Ward 4 Executive of the PDP in Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area passed a vote of no confidence and expelled Dr. Sunny Asetubobe for anti-party activities and failure to pay the annual subscription fee.

In Rivers, Mr. Tinubu was declared as the winner. Peter Obi came in third, followed by Atiku.

According to results posted on the INEC Results Viewing Portal (IReV), Peter Obi, the candidate of the Labour Party (LP), won the 25 February presidential election in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, South-South Nigeria.
Contrary to what INEC declared, Mr. Obi’s vote total in the region suggests that he, not Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), won the presidential election in Rivers.

According to the INEC-released results for the Obio/Akpor council area, Mr. Tinubu received 80, 239 votes, while Mr. Obi received 3,829 votes.
According to this newspaper, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) received 368 votes while Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party received 161.
Later, Mr. Tinubu was announced as the election’s winner. Mr. Obi came in third, followed by Atiku.
However, we found a significant discrepancy between the results as reported by INEC and the results from the various polling units of the 17 wards in the Obio/Akpor LGA as uploaded on IReV.
But winning Rivers does not guarantee Mr. Obi would have won in the general election. As required by the Nigerian constitution, he still wouldn’t have received enough votes to win the most votes nationwide or garner 25% of the vote in at least 24 states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory.
Methodology
Given that Mr. Tinubu was declared winner in Obio/Akpor, the analysis in this newspaper concentrated on the outcomes of the votes obtained by the APC and LP there.
According to our count, the LP received 73,311 votes, compared to 17,158 votes for the APC.
There are 1,211 polling locations throughout Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

On the fifth day of his official visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retired) met with the governors of Borno and Yobe states, Prof. Babagana Zulum and Mai Mala Buni, respectively, as well as the incoming governor of Katsina State, Dikko Radda.

Buhari reportedly met the governors in the Makkah Guest Palace, according to the News Agency of Nigeria. Some government representatives from Nigeria also gave him updates on events there, such as the Saturday supplementary elections that took place in some regions of the nation.

Buhari was briefed by Abdulrasheed Bawa, the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, at the Makkah Guest Palace, where he is being hosted by the host nation’s government.

In keeping with his campaign promises, Radda, the governor-elect of Katsina State, reaffirmed his commitment to an open and transparent government.

Following the meeting, the visitors observed the afternoon prayers with the President.

INEC declares Nasiru Idris of APC as governor elect of Kebbi

Nasiru Idris of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was officially declared the new governor of Kebbi State by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), INEC pronounced the state’s governorship election held on March 18 to be inconclusive.

On Saturday, a second round of voting took place at 142 polling places spread over 20 of the state’s 21 Local Government Areas.

Yusuf Sa’idu of Usmanu Danfodio University in Sokoto, the returning officer, announced the final results at the INEC headquarters in Birnin Kebbi.

He stated that Mr. Idris received 409,225 votes, defeating Aminu Bande of the PDP, who received 360,940 votes, and Udu Idris of the People’s Redemption Party, who received 3,103 votes.
The returning officer stated that there were 800,560 votes cast in total, 781,478 of which were legal, and 19,082 were invalid.

Nasiru Idris of the APC, having satisfied the conditions of the law and garnered the most votes, is hereby returned elected as Governor of Kebbi, I, Prof. Yusuf Sa’idu, the Returning Officer of the governorship election held on April 15, 2023, declared.
