Ahead of the inauguration of Bola Tinubu as President-elect of Nigeria, the Principal Consultant of the Lagos Land Use Charge, Mr. Omodele Ibrahim, has encouraged the former governor of Lagos State to resuscitate national orientation initiatives that will further instill patriotism among Nigerians. These programmes may be found in the Lagos Land Use Charge.

According to a statement, Omodele, who worked directly with Tinubu during the latter’s term as Governor of Lagos State, said that the key function of national orientation to cement patriotic principles is practised globally and is essential in promoting Nigeria among the comity of countries. Tinubu served as Governor of Lagos State from 2003 to 2011.

Omodele, a lawyer based in Lagos who serves as the president of the Epe Ogunmodede Club, stated that as the nation ushers in a new age under Tinubu’s leadership, cries for the rebirth of national orientation courses have gotten stronger. Omodele is the president of the Epe Ogunmodede Club.

Omodele emphasised that in a world that is becoming more interconnected, the power of patriotism should not be underestimated since it acts as the adhesive that bonds a varied nation together, cultivating a profound sense of belonging and motivating citizens towards a shared vision of progress.

“Orientation initiatives have the potential to improve social cohesion, promote inclusivity, and bridge societal differences by developing a strong sense of national pride in participants. This will pave the path for a nation that is more prosperous and more united.

“These programmes encourage citizens to actively participate in the democratic process, contribute to the advancement of their communities, and uphold the nation’s ideals by educating them, engaging them, and raising their awareness of national issues through various awareness campaigns.

“This renewed commitment to civic duty and responsible citizenship can catalyse grassroots movements, fuel social innovation, and spur development initiatives from the bottom up,” he added. “[T]his renewed commitment to civic duty and responsible citizenship can be a catalyst for grassroots movements.”

On Friday, a State High Court that was sitting in Edo overturned the notice of suspension that had been issued against the troubled National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure. The notice of suspension had been issued by some party members at the ward level.

On Friday, the judge, Justice Emmanuel Aihamoje, dismissed the lawsuit because he found it to be without merit.

This information was included in a statement that was released on Friday in Abuja by the Acting National Publicity Secretary of the party, Obiora Ifoh. Ifoh also stated that Abure and the executives of LP Ward 3 in Esan North East of Edo State were the ones who brought the legal action forward.

Aihamoje concluded in his ruling, which lasted for close to two hours and lasted nearly that long, that the party ward executive in Uromi in ward 3 did not have the authority under the Labour Party Constitution, namely Act 13 & 17, and the Electoral Act 2022, as amended, to remove the national chairperson of the party. This ruling was based on Act 13 & 17, and the Electoral Act 2022, as amended.

Because of this, the judge in the case with the number HUC/21/2023 went ahead and imposed a perpetual injunction against Lamidi Apapa and his side, preventing them from dismissing or suspending Abure from his position as national chairman of the party until a new national convention of the party is convened.

Aihamoje went on to assert that the alleged members of the wards 3 executive who were responsible for suspending the national chairperson of the party had behaved in a manner that was inconsistent with the authority granted to them under the Labour Party Constitution.

Thompson Ehiguese, the Chairman of the Labour Party in Ward 3, gave a statement to the journalists present at the courthouse in response to the verdict. He stated that the judgement has put an end to impostors who were masquerading as members of the Labour Party in the ward.

He made his statement as follows: “These charlatans claiming to be members of our party are from Edo North and are members of the APC.” I would want to take this opportunity to offer my congratulations to the Labour Party as well as the Obedient Movement for their unwavering support of Comrade Julius Abure throughout the fabricated turmoil that plagued our great party.

Barrister Julius Abure will continue to serve as national Chairman of the party till the party convention that will take place the following year, as the verdict makes it very plain. There is nothing that can shake the collective determination that we have to recover the mandate that the Nigerian populace willingly gave to Mr. Peter Obi and the party in the most recent presidential election.

Kelly Ogbaloi, the Chairman of the Edo State Labour Party, stated that the Labour Party has been vindicated, adding that the court has established that Apapa and his faction are ‘tragic power seekers.’

“Apapa, who before that was a deputy national chairman and a custodian of the constitution of the party, knew that the act of those who came to Abuja to announce the suspension of the national chairman was not doing so legally, since the action was an aberration to the provisions of the party’s constitution. As a result, he ran to the court in order to seek an ex-parte motion to restrain the national chairman.

“Today they have basically been told that the charade can no longer be entertained by the court,” he said. “The court cannot continue to play along with it.”

After being contacted, the spokesman for the faction led by Lamidi Apapa, Abayomi Arabambi, said that he intended to give a press conference to discuss the verdict.

As of the time that the report was being written, there had been no communication with him.

The idea of regulating bride prices and other activities related to marriage relationships appears to be completely consumed by the authorities of the state of Sokoto. According to the records that have been made available, the Bafarawa administration was the one that initially played with the idea of the government intervening in what is, for all intents and purposes, a private affair between two families by passing a law to that effect. Since that time, the measure has continued to garner the attention of legislators, who have also kept coming back to it to make small adjustments here and there.

The law that governs the “Regulation and control of expenses of marriages, naming and circumcision ceremonies and for purposes connected thereto” was initially enacted in 1992 and was subject to a review in 1996. It was brought up once more in 2022 with the purpose of reevaluating it and possibly making some changes to it. Already, a final draught is sitting there, awaiting the approval of the governor of the state.

The proponents of the bill that seeks to reform this statute claim that one of its goals is to cut down on the extravagant costs associated with organizing the ceremonies that are mentioned. It is also supposed to be in response to a number of complaints received from members of the public regarding the excessive expense of marriages, for instance.

Legislators are of the belief that financial considerations have become a barrier in the way young people get married. And what’s even worse, it’s a source of early marriages that are fraught with problems and frequently end in divorce. These justifications are not unique to the state of Sokoto. In certain parts of the world, getting married is a major construction project that requires a significant financial outlay. Nevertheless, we are adamant that the subject needs to be kept solely within the purview of the families that are involved.

We are of the opinion that it is a waste of time to attempt to govern topics pertaining to the heart or anything else associated with it. If a potential husband is passionately in love with his future wife, he will not care what it takes to win her heart or how much it will set him back. He is able to have a conversation about the situation with the parents of his future wife and children without any meddling from overzealous legislators.

In the culture of the region in question, marriage is not restricted to solely the young people of the population. The political elite has made it a hobby to amass a number of spouses, and they take great pleasure in replacing their “old” wives with “younger” ones, either to conform to their newly attained status or to sate their “overflowing libido.” Perhaps they are looking for a more affordable price.

Already, some elders and clerics are pointing out to the government that such meddling in a subject that is specifically private contravenes the requirements of the Shariah law, which encourages adherents of the faith to marry a person whose socioeconomic position matches their own. In other words, such meddling in a topic that is expressly private violates the Shariah law.

As a newspaper, we are dumbfounded by the fact that the parliamentarians are only listening to the screams of the people with regard to this particular problem of marriage customs. Because they are politicians, it is expected of them that they will listen to the concerns of the people on issues that are related to their welfare.

For instance, why don’t legislators regulate the cost of living in order to bring it down to more manageable levels so that people may afford to live there? Why aren’t they passing laws that raise their wages and allowances to levels that take into account the widespread inequality that exists in the political system? Why are legislators not passing laws to prevent looting of the Treasury and excessive exit benefits?

The difficulty arises from the fact that members of the political class or the ruling elite are complicit in the issue that is driving young people into poverty and preventing them from getting married. How can a young man get married if, years after leaving school, he is unable to find work of any kind, no matter how menial the position? Or maintain the vitality of a marriage?

It is not just the cost of the bride that prevents young people from getting married and starting families, in our opinion; this is a significant barrier on its own. The most significant barrier is that the socioeconomic conditions that have been brought about by poor governance as well as corruption in high places have eaten up the resources that could have been used to generate jobs and other economy-boosting activities that would have put the youths in a better position to enter the business of married life. This is the primary obstacle. These are the types of things that, in our view, provide significant challenges to the institution of marriage. And this is exactly how the lawmakers ought to spend their time in the legislative process.

On this page, we have discussed the ridiculous amounts of money that are spent on political campaigns and elections. We have also voiced our concern on the propensity of politicians to view politics as a business, with the goal of making a profit as soon as they are elected into office and recouping the costs of running for office. Nobody regulates them since they correspond to the interests of groups, and this is why. The legislators do not believe that it is important to take into account the implications of such misconduct on the welfare of the people, whose complaints and cries for help are ignored.

There is no time at all to worry about how much it will cost one to have a wife in locations where there is strong governance and the welfare of the people is the top priority of those in political offices. In these kinds of places, those in political offices are focused entirely on their jobs. It is not appropriate to discuss it in public, as it is a private matter.

We are of the opinion that young people should have the option of getting married without having to worry about the financial repercussions. In addition, we would like to applaud the legislators for their attentiveness. At least on this one occasion, they are responding to the concerns expressed by members of the public. It is important to stress, however, that a young man who has access to financial resources and lives in a thriving economy is unconcerned about the amount of money it will cost him to win the love of his life. It is not the responsibility of the legislative body to be concerned.

Sabo Inuwa, a Kano All Progressives Congress chieftain, praised Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso’s purported decision to join APC.

Inuwa warned that “potential crises may engulf the APC, particularly in Kano and other states up country, where it is strongest, in the event of missteps, that can be costly and destabilising to a new Asiwaju government” if Kwankwaso is admitted.

Inuwa spoke to journalists in Kano on Thursday.

He stated, “This (alleged plan by Kwankwaso to join the APC) is presently in the realm of assumptions; however, when it turns out to be true, it should be viewed as a positive development, given that our 1999 Constitution allows for freedom of association and choice.

However, it requires broad review and consultation. The NNPP’s offer to join the APC should be weighed against the APC’s needs, notably in the National Assembly, where it has a clear majority in both the Senate and the lower chamber, 59 and 168.

As a grassroots mobilizer, my insights focus on possible APC issues, notably in Kano.

Kwankwaso, who placed fourth in the February 25 presidential election, is not contesting the APC’s Bola Tinubu’s victory, unlike the Peoples Democratic Party’s Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s Peter Obi, who placed second and third, respectively, and are in court challenging Tinubu’s victory.

On May 15, Kwankwaso met Tinubu in Paris.

Nuwa advocated “stiffer prison terms for those who smuggled unstamped ballots to the polling units on election day and those found guilty of inciting violence during the election to serve as a deterrent to others.”

Kano is dangerous and electoral criminals should be punished. “Twenty-five years of democracy is a huge investment that must not be frittered away by irresponsible chaps parading as leaders,” he continued.
