Fani-Kayode accuses Atiku of perverting justice in his disqualification suit.

Femi Fani-Kayode, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has provided his response to the ruling that the Supreme Court made regarding Bola Tinubu and Kashim Shettima, who are both running for the position of vice president.

Fani-Kayode asserted that the verdict was proof that the 2023 presidential candidate for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, and his party were unable to intimidate or bribe the judges. He made this claim in response to the ruling.

He asserted that Atiku was unsuccessful in his attempt to subvert the legal system.

Fani-Kayode wrote the following on his Twitter account: “Atiku Abubakar and his Peoples Destruction Party’s nonsense case has finally been dismissed at the Supreme Court.”

“I bet he and his team are sobbing right now because they were not successful in their attempt to obstruct the administration of justice, intimidate the judges, or compromise their decisions.

“This is yet another victory for our team, and Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu comes out on top. Praise be to the Lord!

“Let us hope that this will put an end to the ravenous desire for power that both the Obidients and the Atikulators have,” one could say.

The case that had been brought by the PDP to have Tinubu and Shettima disqualified from running for president in 2023 was thrown out of court on Friday by the highest court in the land.

The party was contesting what they believed to be Shettima’s double nomination.

However, the Supreme Court came to the conclusion that the PDP’s lawsuit had almost no chance of success.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is allegedly using various forms of social media to intimidate and threaten members of the judiciary, as stated by the Supreme Court.

On Friday, Justice of the Supreme Court, Inyang Okoro made this allegation while delivering judgement in an appeal filed by the PDP seeking to void the election of President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu on the grounds that his running mate, Kashim Shettima, was guilty of double nomination. The PDP was seeking to void the election of President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

The supreme court’s five-judge panel unanimously decided to throw out the appeal and came to the conclusion that the appellant did not have the legal right to file the lawsuit.

Okoro ruled that the appellant attempted to mislead the supreme court by claiming that the lower court found that there was, in fact, a double nomination. Okoro held that this was a deliberate attempt to deceive the supreme court.

He stated that “the appellant stated to this court that the court below found that there was indeed double nomination and that the 4th respondent knowingly allowed himself to be nominated in two constituencies.” He went on to say that “the appellant stated to this court that the court below found that there was indeed double nomination.”

“I have searched the entirety of the record as well as the judgement of the court that presided over the case below, and I could not locate any such finding. It’s a shame to think that an experienced and knowledgeable senior counsel might mislead the court.

“I must state for the sake of public policy that indeed the 4th (Shettima) respondent withdrew from the nomination for Borno central district on the 6th of July 2022, which is exhibited as exhibit APC 1 on page 58 of the record of appeal. This information can be found in the record of appeal.

“On the same day, July 6th, 2022, the notice of withdrawal was sent to INEC,” the political party said. A notification of dates for the conduct of fresh primaries for the senatorial district was also sent by the political party on the 10th of July 2022. This latter letter, which is exhibit APC2 and can be found on page 59 of the record, included a reference to exhibit APC1.

“That is, as of the 6th of July 2022, there was no longer nomination of the 4th respondent for Borno central senatorial distict, and there could not have been double nomination on the 14th of July 2022,” the statement reads.

“It is disgusting and unprofessional for the appellant to use social media in an attempt to intimidate and threaten the members of the Supreme Court,” the judge said.Because there is no basis for the appeal, it has been rejected. I agree with the decision that was made in the lead judgement regarding the cost.”

CBN Act: Senate convenes emergency plenary, grants FG’s request

Saturday marked the holding of an emergency session of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which was presided over by the Senate President, Dr. Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan.

The plenary meeting was held in order to amend the Central Bank of Nigeria Act by raising the percentage of advances from 5% to 15%.

According to the bill’s sponsor, Senator Gobir Ibrahim Abdullahi of the Sokoto East Senatorial District, the CBN Act amendment bill had its first reading on May 24, 2023. This was the Wednesday before the bill was introduced.

He explained that in order for the federal government to be able to fulfil its financial commitments, the request made to the Ways and Means Committee needed to be increased from the current 5% to 15%.

Senator Abdullahi explained the purpose of the proposed legislation as follows: “The Bill seeks to amend the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Act to increase the total CBN advances to the Federal Government from five percent (5%) to a Maximum of fifteen percent (15%).”

On Wednesday, May 24th, 2023, the Bill was read in this Chamber for the very first time.

“The very essence of this Bill, my respected colleagues, is to enable the Federal Government to meet its immediate and future obligation in the approval of the ways and means by the National Assembly and advances to the Federal Government by the Central Bank of Nigeria,” the text of the bill reads. “The National Assembly must approve the ways and means, and the Federal Government must receive advances from the Central Bank of Nigeria.”

The leader of the Senate urged the support of Senators for the bill to scale through, stating that it was for important projects that would inflate and rejig the economy if it was allowed to move forward.

The senators who spoke on the floor concurred with his submission and pointed out that the FG was burdened with a significant amount of responsibilities, which is the reason for their support.

As Buhari spends N14tn to combat insecurity, killings continue

According to an analysis, the Federal Government of Nigeria has allotted a total of N14,063,279,559,996 to various security agencies and their coordinating ministries from 2015 until 2023. This comes amid a rise in the number of murders.

For a period of eight years, the allocations were detailed in the Appropriation Bills that were posted on the website maintained by the Budget Office of the Federation.

According to the breakdown, the Ministry of Police Affairs received N4,956,267,942 in funding for the year 2015; the Ministry of Interior received N156,220,022,460; the Ministry of Defence received N375,497,219,431; the Police Service Commission received N990,477,185; police formations and commands received N321,622,224,611; and the Office of the National Security Adviser received N88,726,771,998.

It was budgeted that the PSC would receive a total of N980,705,292 in 2016, while the Ministry of Defence would receive N443,077,795,159, the Ministry of Interior would receive N513,655,831,565, and the NSA would receive N21, 007,059,483.

Also in 2017, the budgetary allocation for the Ministry of Defence was N465,488,229,573, the Ministry of the Interior received N545,630,780,046, the National Security Agency received N110,490,229,417, and the Public Service Commission received N1,967,172,630.

PSC had a budget of N1,472,026,629 in 2018, while the Ministry of Defence had a budget of N567,433,895,517, the Ministry of Interior had a budget of N574,134,520,760, and the NSA had a budget of N121,730,943,684.

In the Appropriation Act for 2019, the office of the NSA was allocated N120,712,711,220, while the Ministry of Defence was allocated N589,955,110,099, the Ministry of Interior was allocated N617,901,064,592, and the PSC was allocated N1,751,274,031.

The Public Service Commission had a budget of N1,369,586,675, the National Security Agency had a budget of N144,326,228,206, the Ministry of Police Affairs had a budget of N410,532,262,631, the Ministry of Interior had a budget of N253,493,565,095, and the Ministry of Defence had a budget of N900,770,634,390.

The Ministry of Defence had a budget of N966,410,067,089 in 2021; the Ministry of Police Affairs had a budget of N455,134,536,905; the National Security Agency had a budget of N179,742,734,268; the Ministry of Interior had a budget of N271,666,471,225; and the Public Service Commission had a budget of N1,647,175,806.

In 2022, the budgetary allocations were as follows: N1,200,712,724,376 for the Ministry of Defence; N559,106,745,837 for the Ministry of Police Affairs; N294,575,137,624 for the Ministry of the Interior; N1,158,657,748 for the Public Service Commission; and N214,708,002,009 for the National Security Agency.

The budgetary allocations for the various security agencies and coordinating ministries in 2023 are as follows: N813,912,057,660 for the Ministry of Police Affairs; N1,248,170,610,116 for the Ministry of Defence; N304,395,280,926 for the Ministry of Interior; N195,018,151,836 for the National Security Agency; and N1,026,626,250 for the Public Service Commission.

The country’s precarious security situation has worsened in spite of the enormous budgetary allocations. A number of states have deteriorated into a killing field, and kidnappings for ransom have tainted the government’s reputation.

In the recent past, bandits took at least eighty people hostage in the state of Zamfara.

15 people were killed when armed men attacked the village of Garin Baka, located in the Ardo-Kola Local Government Area of Taraba State, on March 31, 2023.

On April 4, bandits seized 32 hostages, including two police officers, in the state of Niger.

On April 7, bandits attacked a camp for internally displaced people located in the state of Benue, and they were responsible for the deaths of over forty of those people.

A similar attack took place in the village of Umogidi, which is located in the Enetekpa Adoka district of the Otukpo Local Government Area of the state. At least 50 people were killed in this attack.

At Ruji in Kaduna, 33 persons were killed on April 17, 2023.

The most recent incident was the Plateau crisis, in which a total of 125 dead bodies were found and subsequently buried in a mass grave.

The Defence Headquarters stated that the inability of troops to prevent some of the attacks in the region was due to the vastness of some areas in the northern parts of the country as well as the lack of timely information from citizens.

As long as the people living in these areas continue to work with the military, there will be no safe haven for terrorists, according to the military’s highest command, who noted this fact.

During the biweekly briefing of the military that took place on Thursday in Abuja, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Musa Danmadami, gave a speech while also fielding questions from journalists.

He stated, “The region is very large, so it is safe to assume that there are ungoverned areas within those gaps.” However, I can say with absolute certainty that as far as the military is concerned, there is no place for these terrorists to hide as long as there is cooperation with the general populace and they continue to report information to us. There is no place for them to hide because, as we have already told you, operations are taking place all across this country, and there is no way to escape them.

He referred to the Jos incident as a misfortune and emphasised the significance of receiving information in a timely manner, adding that there would be very little that the soldiers could do in the event of an attack. He went on to say that timely information was essential.

Naira redesign: Adeyemi tells Tinubu to question Emefiele.

Smart Adeyemi, a senator for Kogi West, has requested an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the naira redesign policy from the incoming administration.

Adeyemi specifically requested that Bola Tinubu, the president-elect, make sure that Godwin Emiefiele, the CBN governor, is summoned for questioning in order to identify those responsible.

The lawmaker, who appeared as a guest on Friday’s episode of Channels Television Politics Today, bemoaned the hardships that Nigerians endured when the policy was first implemented.

If he were president, Adeyemi responded, “I will call on Emefiele and others to come and explain what happened and what was the reason behind the redesigning of the naira notes,” when asked what he would do.

Because they couldn’t access their money, people in that time period suffered strokes and died. And since you and I are still alive, why should we care about those who perished from causes not of their own making?

In his defence, he said, “That policy killed some people who were innocent victims of the circumstances at the time.

Adeyemi remembered how, but for the judiciary’s quick action, the situation might have spiralled into anarchy.

He continued by saying that Tinubu’s bid for the presidency was purposefully thwarted by the redesign of the naira.

He continued, “Tinubu should not forget this, as the deliberate attempt was made then to prevent the APC from winning. We were informed that the naira has been redesigned in order to prevent a repeat now that we have prevailed, but where are the new notes that have been redesigned?

“They stop getting around gradually. We were informed by those in charge of the redesign of the naira notes that there would be enough new notes in circulation in two weeks at that time.

“Months after the Supreme Court’s judgement, up until now, the so-called redesigned notes are disappearing,” he claimed.

But he added that when Tinubu assumes the presidency on Monday, May 29, Nigerians should prepare for a new nation.

The Federal Government declared Monday, May 29, 2023, a holiday for all employees across the nation.

This is to mark the inauguration of the president-elect, Bola Tinubu, the Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola stated in a statement released on Friday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Shuaib Belgore.

He urged Nigerians to uphold the rule of law in order to maintain and advance democracy.

“The Minister felicitates with all Nigerians on the historic occasion, commending them for their faith in democracy as expressed in the national election that produced the President and his Deputy being inaugurated and indeed in all elections across the nation,” the statement said in part.

“He said democracy is an unfinished business everywhere, and the only way it can continue to grow and serve its purpose of being the means of ensuring good governance and the welfare of all people is by upholding its principles of the rule of law, supporting democratic institutions, encouraging a free and responsible press, and expanding the bounds of freedom for all people.

Aregbesola urged Nigerians to keep advocating for ideas of peaceful coexistence and love for one’s neighbours, pointing out that only in a peaceful environment can democracy be practised and its benefits reaped.

The Minister did, however, praise all Nigerians for their efforts in securing uninterrupted civilian rule and effective regime changes since 1999.

He urged them to support and work with the incoming government, claiming that the people’s boundless energy is the country’s greatest strength and will lead the country to its highest point when it is constructively employed in its service.

However, the Minister urged Nigerians to abstain from all forms of violence and other bad deeds, telling them that the future is very bright when the country achieves greatness in all spheres of human development with all hands on deck.

Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former Kano State governor, launched the new Ungwan Rimi Market and School and Emir Roads in Kaduna on Friday.
Chief Bisi Akande, former interim national chairman of the All Progressives Congress, also commissioned Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s Urban Renewal Programme’s extended Bida Road.

Akande, who commissioned the road on behalf of Minister of Information Alhaji Lai Mohammed, praised El-Rufai for changing Kaduna State for humanity.

Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff, who commissioned the Kabala Flyover on Aliyu Makama Road, Barnaw, said he felt Kaduna will remember the excellent things the El-Rufai administration did.

Namadi Sambo, ex-Vice President, commissioned the Raba connection road and stated it will benefit Kaduna state.

Sambo said, “While praying Allah to continue to bless El-Rufai for the huge development, the people are very proud of the governor because it is very clear that for the next 50 years, Kaduna metropolis will be a new city.”

Sen. Aisha Binani commissioned the Umar Yar’Adua Road in Kaduna Millennium City, claiming it benefits her and the state’s residents.

At the commissioning, Gov. El-Rufai stated the projects are part of the administration’s Urban Renewal Programme to develop and repair key public infrastructure across the state.

El-Rufai said the projects are vital for the state because they unite communities, attract investment, and boost economic growth.

El-Rufai’s urban renewal strategy commissioned some projects.

In January 2021, President Muhammadu Buhari launched the urban redevelopment program’s first phase.

The Vice President-elect, Kashim Shettima, has remarked that the country’s many issues may make his administration’s start difficult.

Shettima, who represented President-elect Bola Tinubu, said he was aware they were short on time and that delay may worsen the country’s condition.

“Tinubu is fair-minded,” he stated. He will serve Nigeria regardless of party, religion, or tribe. We share poverty and instability with others. We must unite now.

“Our nation has great potential to share with the world. China is no longer a sleeping giant. Nigeria must awaken. We need your prayers for wisdom. Tinubu will land.

“Time is scarce. Our problems worsen. Today is urgent. Nigerians will honour us eventually. Let me be honest—the beginning may not be good. Oil subsidies burden us. Multiple exchange rates hurt the economy. The president-elect will make some decisions, but Nigerians will eventually appreciate and applaud us.”

He pledged that the future administration would fairly represent and compensate women.

“To my sisters, rest assured you will be well represented in the incoming administration,” he stated. I’ll also pay you generously.

President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) said the economic, security, and other issues under his care were global.

Buhari, represented by Boss Mustapha, said Nigerians overcame other hurdles by handling the issues.

“Our economic, security, and social issues are not unique,” he remarked. The country can always be wonderful. Nigerians have overcome COVID-19, the Russian-Ukrainian war, and other challenges.

He asked Nigerians to support the new administration notwithstanding their election disputes.

Buhari stated, “Elections have passed. New leaders were elected. Our job is to help them transform Nigeria. To advance, we must use our differences. We must also promote peace, harmony, and legality. Last government provided a solid platform for future administrations.”

As part of ongoing celebrations for his inauguration, the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, joined the outgoing President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), on Friday afternoon for Juma’at prayers at the State House Mosque.

The president-elect’s media advisor, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, made this revelation in a statement that was released in Abuja.

Before Monday’s swearing-in ceremony, where he is anticipated to take his final bow from office, Buhari had invited the former governor of Lagos to join him in his final public prayer session at the State House Mosque.

Senator Ibikunle Amosun, a former governor of Ogun State, General Buba Marwa, the head of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Mallam Shehu Garba, the senior special assistant to the president for media and publicity, and a few other presidential aides were among those who observed the Juma’at with them.

The official handover rituals got under way on Thursday with the induction of the President-elect and his Vice President-elect, Senator Kashim Shettima, into the highest national honours and the delivery of the handover paperwork to the incoming president.

Muslim prayers and an interdenominational Christian service were scheduled for Friday and Sunday, respectively, according to the statement. Similar prayer sessions were scheduled across the nation, while the two events were scheduled to take place in Abuja at the National Mosque and the National Ecumenical Centre.

“On Monday, May 29, when the former governor of Lagos takes the oath of office as the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s 16th president, the events will come to a head. To end poverty and achieve high income status, all 54 of Africa’s countries must constantly maintain a growth rate of seven percent for the ensuing forty to fifty years.

At the 2023 AfDB Annual Meetings in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, Group President of the African Development Bank, addressed African economic leaders on the topic of “Key Actions to Achieving Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development in Africa.”

He asserted that it is apparent that African leaders must speed up development in order to raise the continent’s population’s level of living.

Achieving the African Union objective for 2023 and the Sustainable Development Goals is also important, he noted.

Although accomplishing this objective may be challenging, according to Adesina, it is not insurmountable for the continent.

According to the AfDB projection study, the average growth rate of the continent’s gross domestic product fell from 4.8% in 2021 to 3.8% in 2022.

“And the deterioration is widespread. A worse growth rate was seen in 31 of the 54 African nations in 2022 compared to the year before.

“However, we expect growth to pick up to 4% in 2023 and to pick up even more speed to 4.3 percent in 2024. However, we must acknowledge the growth fluctuation that has characterised our roles,” he said.

Adesina expressed concern that several nations experienced amazing development rates before regressing in difficult times. So, in order to assure continued progress and prosperity, we must draw lessons from this.

Additionally, he added, “We understand that our continent has had its fair share of challenges, including growth-stagnation, decline, and even catastrophic growth, and these data serve as a reminder of the work that still to be done.

“The world we live in is getting more complicated and uncertain. Shocks in the areas of health, finance, socioeconomics, and the environment pose a threat to our progress towards the UN SDGs, AU Agenda 2063, and all other top-priority development targets.

The vulnerability of the health system and the brittleness of Africa’s growth pillars were further highlighted by some of the difficulties the continent was facing, such as COVID-19, conflict, and climate change.

“In particular, our substantial reliance on commodity exports and outside funding sources including loans, remittances, foreign direct investment, and development aid.

In addition, he said, “we must recognise the immense promise and opportunity that Africa holds, even as we acknowledge the problems that lie ahead.

He claims that this demographic change presents us with the possibility of a demographic dividend, a sizable work force to aid Africa’s industrialization efforts, and lower production costs.

He argued that investing in Africa’s youth is one of its greatest assets. We must provide them the tools and chances they require to move the continent forward.

Adesina stated that the creation of the Africa Continental Free commerce Area would be a game-changer since it could boost commerce by 52%.

“It will increase trade within Africa by up to $7 billion annually and decrease imports from outside the continent by $10 billion.

“Up to $45 billion and $21 billion, respectively, will be added to our industrial exports, and these figures show a more promising future for trade and economic growth ratio among African countries,” he said.

He advised economies on the continent to take advantage of the abundant natural riches that the continent possessed because doing so might boost economic growth, inspire young people, and promote job development.

According to Adesina, the research provided Africa with a crucial road map for the future, where each African country may see annual GDP growth rates of seven to ten percent over the following forty years.

However, he asserted that growth alone was insufficient and that Africa needed to address problems with equitable and prosperous governance, poverty, and inequality on the continent.

We have a responsibility to promote environmentally sustainable living, diversified growth sources, and creatively highlight the need to accept climate change, according to Adesina.

“We need to build an economically robust, socially just, and environmentally sustainable Africa.
