At the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu held a private meeting with Senators Abdullahi Adamu and Iyiola Omisore, the former National Chairman and Secretary of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

Prior to the National Caucus and National Executive Council, NEC, sessions that were set to take place on Monday, July 18 and Tuesday, July 19, respectively, Adamu and Omisore reportedly resigned from their roles last week.

After the pair allegedly submitted their letter of resignation, the meeting was called off.

The party’s overall leader, President Tinubu, is given a great deal of power and sway within the APC and is expected to have a significant impact on the emergence of new party figures.

It is assumed that the visit must have been a part of efforts to resolve problems involving the party’s leadership even though the reason for it cannot be publicly stated.

When suspicions of the duo’s resignation first surfaced, the former chairman, Adamu, was quoted as saying he would hold off on commenting on the situation until President Tinubu, who was away in Nairobi, Kenya, arrived home.

Although neither Adamu nor Omisore have publicly announced their alleged resignations, the Acting National Chairman, Abubakar Kyari, who was Deputy National Chairman (North), said both leaders had resigned to journalists after a meeting of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) in Abuja.

“The NWC wishes to inform you of the resignations of the National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, and the National Secretary, Senator Iyiola Omisore. As a result of this development and in accordance with the APC’s constitution, it is now incumbent upon my humble self, Senator Abubakar Kyari, as a Deputy National Chairman, North, to assume the office of the acting National Chairman of the APC.

“And as a result, Festus Fuantar, the Deputy National Secretary, will now take over as the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) interim National Secretary.

The proposed National Caucus meeting scheduled for Tuesday, July 18, 2023, and the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Executive Committee meetings scheduled for Wednesday, July 19, 2023, are hereby cancelled. This is due to the recent development in the change of leadership. Furthermore, this delay won’t last indefinitely; instead, a new date will be announced soon, he added.

At the Federal High Court in Lagos State, Department of State Services agents detained a senior official from Ikoyi Prisons.

The custody dispute involving Godwin Emefiele, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, may not be unrelated to the arrest.

The secret service agents then freed the Ikoyi jail officer who had been roughed up and forced into the DSS car.

A minor drama involving DSS agents and Nigeria Correctional Service employees over custody of Emefiele was previously alleged to have taken place in the Federal High Court in Lagos State.

Emefiele was charged by the Federal Ministry of Justice with illegally possessing firearms and ammunition, but after pleading “not guilty,” he was released on bail in the amount of N20 million with one surety.

A minor drama broke out inside the courthouse between completely hooded DSS agents and NCS agents about who would be in charge of taking custody of the troubled CBN head while the defendant’s attorneys worked to fix his bail conditions.

On Sunday, soldiers from the Nigerian Army conducted raids on camps belonging to the separatist Indigenous People of Biafra in the state of Anambra. As part of the ‘clearance operations,’ the soldiers recovered weapons and apprehended nine individuals suspected of being criminals.

In a statement released on Monday, the Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, explained that one of those individuals who were captured during the operations was an IPOB fighter, while the other eight were brigands.

He stated that troops, with assistance from vigilantes, had destroyed known IPOB hideouts and recovered a number of weapons.

“In the ongoing clearance operations to ensure peace and security in South-East Nigeria, troops of the 302 Regiment, operating under the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army in conjunction with the Anambra Vigilante Group, have destroyed camps belonging to fighters of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra and its armed affiliate, the Eastern Security Network. These camps were located in Oroma and Umuewelum Anam in the Anambra West Local Government Area of Anambra State.

“On Sunday, July 23, 2023, the troops conducted raids on the identified camps in an effort to put a stop to illegal activities being carried out by fighters in the communities.

During the course of the operation, the soldiers found and confiscated two motorcycles, three Lexus SUVs, one AK-47 rifle, and one AKMS rifle. During the operation, the soldiers managed to capture a total of eight bandits.

“In a separate operation, troops raided the IPOB camp at Mmiata Anam in the Anambra South local government area. When the valiant troops came into contact with the separatist organisation, one of the IPOB fighters was killed, while another was taken alive into custody. Additionally, one AK-47 rifle, one handgun, and police uniforms were located and recovered by the troops.

“Our goal is to have a legislative agenda that satisfies the needs and aspirations of citizens and that they can use as a yardstick to judge and assess our performance after four years,” he said. So, this meeting shouldn’t be considered your standard talk shop. Think of it as a crucial national assignment.

There is no better way, he noted, to demonstrate that the 10th House of Representatives is prepared to address the urgent needs of those who brought us to the people’s House to conduct people’s business.

According to him, the public engagement upheld the House’s resolve to regularly consult the public as it carried out the mandate placed in the lawmakers’ hands.

He continued: “I equally promised that while it is the duty of the House to develop a Legislative Agenda for which our constituents will hold us accountable, the House would not hesitate to consult critical stakeholders in developing the agenda to elicit their input and areas of expectations, which is the reason we have gathered here this morning.”

Speaking about how participation by the populace is the foundation of a representative democracy, Speaker Abbas said, “It is only through such engagements that legislators will truly become the representatives of the people. A democracy without the people would result from doing anything else, he continued.

The Speaker continued, “I urge the stakeholders gathered here to make the most of this significant opportunity,” noting that the Committee on Legislative Agenda had convened the forum as part of its mandate to learn from citizens what they perceive to be the most pressing legislative need of the country.

Speaker Abbas stated that he anticipated the discussions to centre on “the critical needs of our people at this time.”

The Speaker also emphasised that the House would give participatory budgeting, electoral reform, women’s participation and inclusion in governance, improved socioeconomic conditions, entrepreneurship, employment, health care, and education, infrastructure, citizens-focused diplomacy, institutional capacity, and citizen engagement, as well as constitutional amendment and restructuring, top priority.

“Our interaction with citizens will go beyond the consultation we’re having today. As we work to return the Legislature to those who own it through regular, meaningful, and productive engagements, the 10th House of Representatives’ “Open NASS” project calls for ongoing consultations with the public. In order to regularly interact with their constituents, lawmakers must also have operational constituency offices.

The Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) of the United Kingdom were thanked by Speaker Abbas for their support over the years, particularly for helping the House advance the legislative agenda.

He stated that a prosperous and thriving Nigeria, where each citizen can realise their full potential, is the goal of the House for Nigeria.

“We picture a Nigeria with an economy that is strong and diverse, world-class infrastructure, transformative education, universal access to healthcare, and open and responsible government. The aspiration of every Nigerian, regardless of political affiliation, is embodied in this vision, he said.

The Chairman outlined the legislative agenda’s five main pillars, which are: infrastructure development; education and human capital development; universal access to healthcare; transparent governance and accountability; and economic empowerment and diversification.

Ihonvbere stated: “As the people’s representatives, we have been given the enormous responsibility of determining the course of our nation’s development.

“The Legislative Agenda is the result of tireless efforts, extensive consultations, and dedicated research aimed at addressing the critical challenges facing our country while seizing the abundant opportunities that lie ahead,” the legislative agenda reads.
