A herdsman named Abdulrahman Kaila was reportedly detained by the Plateau State Police Command for allegedly chopping off a farmer’s hand in the state’s Lakushi hamlet, Shendam Local Government Area.

Last week, a video of the farmer holding his amputated right hand while blood trickled to the ground went viral on social media.

In the brief video, he is heard telling three men that a Fulani herder amputated his hand after he ordered him (the herder) to move his animals out of his farm.

The two guys then encouraged the farmer, who had been observed bleeding heavily, to go to the hospital for treatment while they reported the event to the police.

Alabo Alfred, the spokesman for the Plateau State Police Command, told The PUNCH in Jos on Sunday that plans had been made to arraign the suspect in court.

The PPRO declared, “We have detained the culprit who severed a person’s hand. Right now, he is under our care. Through our network of intelligence, we managed to apprehend him. Therefore, it cannot be said that he deliberately gave himself up. We won’t reveal it because it is part of our overall strategy.

Following a prompt response by the DPO, the suspect was apprehended and revealed us his motivation for severing the farmer’s hand, according to the police commissioner.

The suspect will be charged in court either tomorrow (Monday) or next tomorrow (Tuesday), that is all I can say at this point.

The suspect was questioned, according to sources at the command centre in Jos, and claimed, “I was grazing when the farmer stopped me and ordered me to go back since the location where I was grazing is a rice plantation.

“When I arrived back, he claimed that the cattle had wrecked his land. I immediately pushed the cattle, and before you knew it, we were fighting. I wasn’t sure how I managed to sever his hand when we were arguing. I carried out my wish when I did it.

Gen. Abdourahamane Tchiani, the head of the junta that overthrew the government in the Niger Republic, declared on Saturday that his nation does not desire war but is prepared to defend itself if necessary.

The Al Jazeera network paraphrased Tchiani as saying, “Neither the army nor the people of Niger want war, but we will resist any manifestation of it.”

He stated that the Economic Community of West African States’ member nations are unaware that the Niger is now essential for preventing regional instability in the face of an uptick in terrorist activities.

Tchiani stated that the sanctions imposed on his nation were intended to put pressure on the rebels rather than to resolve the current crisis.

Tchiani added that rebels prefer to find a solution that serves the needs of the populace rather than assuming control of the nation.

According to reports in the media on Saturday, an ECOWAS team travelled to the capital of Niger and met with ousted president Mohamed Bazoum to discuss the terms of his confinement.

Reuters noted that the delegation also spoke with Tchiani later in the day.

On July 26, Niger saw a coup, and Bazoum was overthrown and imprisoned by his own guard, which was headed by Tchiani.

Following the takeover, ECOWAS cut off all financial help to Niger, froze the assets of the rebels, and prohibited commercial flights into and out of the nation.

Early in August, ECOWAS officials decided to create a standby force to perhaps persuade the Nigerien military to restore Bazoum during a summit in the Nigerian capital Abuja.

During the event, Mr. Ephraim Tony, head of Monitoring and Evaluation, spoke on behalf of Mr. Mustapha Ahmed, Director-General of NEMA, who said that the Federal Government had approved the intervention specifically for those who would be impacted by the flood disasters in 2022 and those who were deemed to be the most vulnerable people nationwide.
Ahmed recounted how several towns in the nation were ravaged by the 2022 flood calamity, notably Kwara State, where the majority of the population was displaced and their agriculture and crops were entirely washed away by water.
“Search and rescue activities were successfully carried out in a number of sites after the flood, when people who were trapped were freed and provided the necessary care. As soon as the flood catastrophe occurred, the federal government approved relief materials for delivery throughout the states to supplement the state government’s immediate response.Additionally, based on assessments made jointly by the NEMA and State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs), the federal government approved this special intervention to help those who are vulnerable across the nation and those affected by the flood, supporting their quick return to normalcy.The selected most vulnerable people will benefit from this intervention in terms of their long-term socioeconomic resilience. With the assistance of workers from SEMAs, the State Agricultural Development Project, and other pertinent partners, the NEMA verified the target beneficiaries. In all, 660,884 households in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were verified and selected to get assistance from this unique operation, according to Ahmed.
The NEMA director gave the recipients advice on how to best use the supplies given to them in order to raise their socioeconomic standing.
He expressed his gratitude to Vice President Kashim Shetima and President Bola Tinubu for their assistance in putting the intervention into action.
The governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, praised the federal government’s initiative through NEMA for what he called “this timely intervention.”
AbdulRazaq emphasised the administration’s commitment to supporting all activities aimed at easing the socio-economic hardship of the state’s citizens as he urged the recipients to make wise use of the products.
