Lagos Police Probe Tactical Squad Officers Over Alleged N3M Extortion

0

Official inquiry into claims that members of the Onikan Police Station Tactical Squad tried to extort N3 million from a resident at gunpoint has been opened by the Lagos State Police Command.

Boluwatife (@Tife_badass), the complaint on X (previously Twitter), claimed that the incident happened at around 1 a.m. on Thursday while he and a companion were traveling from Lekki to Victoria Island for an artist’s gig.

About five armed officers reportedly stopped Boluwatife close to the Lekki–Ikoyi Link Bridge roundabout, according to a thorough social media account.

He claims that after cocking their guns, the officers dragged him out of the driver’s seat and accused him of murdering Lekki police officers.

While policemen drove his car separately, he claimed that he and his friend were handcuffed, put in a police Hilux van, and driven to the station.

In order to prepare for his imprisonment, he claimed that police at the Onikan Police Station told him to take off his shirt, shoes, and socks. Despite searching his paperwork and automobile, they supposedly found nothing that would implicate him.

“They demanded N3 million two hours later,” he wrote. “I declined, and they lowered it to N500,000 following further persuasion. My phone was returned, and I immediately called my people to ask for assistance. I was fortunately saved.

Additionally, Boluwatife claimed that when he refused to comply, the officers threatened to shoot him several times and even painted him as a cultist and fraudster.

“What about the average person who has nothing? I’m not shaken. They spoke to me about a variety of topics. The fact that ten police officers are threatening you without cause is absurd,” he added.

CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, responded to the accusations on Thursday by saying on X that a thorough inquiry had been ordered by the state’s police leadership.

“The State Criminal Investigation Department’s Deputy Commissioner of Police, SCID, has been instructed to look into the complaint by Commissioner of Police CP Olohundare Jimoh, who has called all of the officers to the Command Headquarters in Ikeja. Hundeyin promised to keep the public informed of the outcome.

Tambuwal’s EFCC Arrest Sparks Northern Reactions: Corruption Fight ‘Selective

The arrest of former Sokoto State governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has prompted prominent Northern Nigerian voices to respond, characterizing it as a situation that may have significant political ramifications.

The arrest, according to some northern leaders, raises questions about political witch-hunting, while others maintain that the law must be applied regardless of status.

Remember how Aminu Tambuwal was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday to be questioned over alleged ₦189 billion in illicit cash withdrawals?

When Tambuwal, a two-term governor of Sokoto State and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, arrived at the EFCC offices in Abuja at around 11 a.m. on Monday, he was arrested and questioned by detectives.

Investigators claim that he made large cash withdrawals while serving as governor, in violation of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

The arrest has been denounced by numerous people and organizations. It was characterized as politically motivated by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi criticized the arrest, arguing that Nigeria’s fight against corruption must be transparent and equitable. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar accused the Tinubu administration of employing the EFCC to harass and intimidate the opposition. The action was also criticized by the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), which described it as a partisan ploy that erodes public confidence.

The EFCC asserted, however, that it has a nonpartisan mandate and has performed its tasks with caution and objectivity. Regardless of whether the suspects belong to the opposition or the ruling party, it emphasized that the law is working its course.

In an exclusive interview, Northern activist and pundit Mahdi Shehu accused the anti-graft agency of political prejudice and characterized the arrest of former Sokoto State governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal as proof that the EFCC was dancing nude.

“If it’s not political, why arrest him now when the EFCC is protecting over 43% of National Assembly members facing fraud charges, Godswill Akpabio, Bello Matawalle, Aliyu Wamakko, and some serving ministers who are facing criminal trials?”

He claimed that while the agency protects people who are in the APC or intend to join it, it primarily targets lawmakers from other parties.

Shehu cited a number of well-known corruption cases in which the EFCC reportedly turned a blind eye.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) was unable to account for ₦210 trillion between 2017 and 2023, according to the Senate Public Accounts Committee, he cited.

Since NNPCL is a no-go region, the EFCC faked and entered Siesta in this instance. “The senior petroleum minister is always the president,” Shehu stated.

He also brought up the $7 billion (₦10.4 trillion) that was missing and the payments of “fraudulent millions per month” to consultants at the Central Bank of Nigeria for the turnaround maintenance of the refineries in Kaduna, Warri, and Port Harcourt.

He claimed, “Because those involved have powerful backers in the kitchen, the EFCC put cotton wool in both ears.”

Shehu also asked why Bayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, has not been looked into by the EFCC after he recently showed off a multibillion-naira home on the internet.

He was barely making ends meet before to Tinubu’s appointment. He has since constructed what is known as Government House No. 2. However, he declared, “EFCC will never have the guts, courage, audacity, or liver to touch him.”

He accused the EFCC of operating a convenient system where certain Nigerians are more Nigerian than others, similar to Animal Farm, and warned that the day will soon come when the hunter will become the prey.

In an interview, former Kano House of Assembly candidate Adnan Mukhtar Tudunwada also called Tambuwal’s EFCC detention “very unfortunate” and “purely political.”

In his battle against corruption, he charged that the anti-graft agency had abandoned impartiality and equity.

He claims that while opposition politicians are hounded and intimidated, “many members of the APC also face corruption allegations but are never invited for questioning.”

Adnan thinks the action is related to Tambuwal’s recent criticism of the administration of President Bola Tinubu, adding that the EFCC’s efforts to combat corruption are selective and devoid of integrity and transparency.

Public affairs attorney Rabiu Musa, meantime, stated that people should be truthful and concentrate on the alleged crime when it comes to legal violations, regardless of their political affiliation.

Was there anything Tambuwal did that led to his arrest? “People should see past politics,” he stated in an interview.

APC Kicks Off Campaigns for Rivers LG Polls, Issues Party Flags to Contestants

0

The Rivers State All Progressives Congress launched its campaigns for the August 30, 2025 elections on Thursday, presenting flags to the candidates for the positions of chairman and councilor.

Chief Tony Okocha, the state APC chairman, spoke to a throng that included representatives from all LGAs in the state and reaffirmed the party’s pledge to win 23 chairmanship and councillorship seats, including the state’s 319 wards.

Okocha praised party members for their unity in restoring the APC to its former prominence in Rivers politics and urged them to carry out the campaigns throughout the entire state.

He stated, “Every system has its procedures, so what we are doing today is a ritual.”

Many of you have been eager to get out there and start running campaigns. Once this is finished, you can explore every inch of the 319 walls and campaign, as well as the 23 local government areas.

Okocha, who earlier this month at the RSIEC stakeholders meeting had claimed that the APC will run in the council elections, reiterated his claim that the October 5, 2024, local council elections were faulty.

“You’ll remember that there was something that was a charade a while back,” he said to the audience on Thursday. We did not take part, despite APC’s declaration that we would not. We reassured them that there would be no problems. That won’t work. Did it succeed? Nope!

We stand before you today with courage, joy, and excitement to declare that the procedures that RISEC has established are correct because they are correct. We are available to assist and adhere to those procedures. After being vetted, our people were chosen as candidates for council members and chairman.

Once more, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate my friends who are the chairmen-elect and their deputies. The council members-elect and their deputies have my congratulations as well. Everything went smoothly in the primaries. Didn’t you hear anyone fighting? Since we are a formal political party, we are telling you that everything is set up.

We will not merely test the waters at this point. APC, on August 30th, we will not be testing the waters. The elections will be contested and won by us. We are traveling there to run in this election in an attempt to win the 319 wards and 23 local government areas in Rivers State,” Okocha stated.

Magnus Ngei Abe, the senator who previously represented Rivers South East and who now represents Victory Giadom, the National Vice Chairman of the APC (South South), also spoke. He praised the togetherness and cohesion that Tony Okocha’s leadership had brought about within the party.

Any other individual claiming to be the state’s party leader is breaking the law, he claimed.

“We are one Rivers State,” Abe declared. All those who have an interest in River State are on board with us as we unite as one. Those who are not on board are wasting their time by going around on TV stations claiming to be the party’s leaders.

The two of us are moving together. We invite everyone in Rivers State to join the APC. To bring democracy’s benefits to the people at large, let’s collaborate with the present chairman,” he remarked.

Former Nigerian High Commissioner to Jamaica, Belize, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic Maureen Tamuno has praised the movement to include women in political and governing roles.

“Rivers State women are united in one voice,” she remarked. Our dedication to the fear of God is what has allowed Rivers State to remain united and peaceful to this day.

We want to reassure you that, as women with a grassroots foundation, we will undoubtedly reap the benefits of democracy when the time comes. so that River State can eventually start to experience the President’s Renewed Hope,” she stated.

Chekwas Okorie: Soludo Might Cause APGA to Lose Anambra

0

In this interview with CHIBUIKE CHUKWU, Chief Chekwas Okorie, the founding member and pioneer National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), discusses the impending Anambra State governorship race, Governor Charles Soludo’s chances, and other national concerns. Samples

You previously stated that the APGA, APC, and Labour Party will compete in the November Anambra State gubernatorial election. Does this imply that you don’t take the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) seriously, considering that they were once the state’s and the country’s dominant party?

As I write this, I have no idea who the PDP’s nominee is for the same November gubernatorial race. Additionally, I’m not sure how many people are familiar with the PDP candidate running in the election. Therefore, it’s about the present reality rather than the party. For sixteen years, the PDP ruled Nigeria, but that is the past. To the best of my knowledge, the PDP is still in existence in Anambra State today. I have several acquaintances who are well-known members of the party, but none of them appear to care about the events there; some of them are even unaware of their candidate. They are unsure of who is financing whom due to the PDP conflict. Because they are unsure of their target audience, even the PDP mainstays in Anambra that I am aware of are not participating in the campaign. Therefore, if I do not include the PDP in my vote-counting before the election, it is for a valid cause and not maliciously. If you ask anyone in Anambra, they will likewise say they don’t know if the PDP is running for that office.

I am aware that you do not belong to the PDP, but with your extensive background in party management and the Nigerian political landscape, what do you believe to be the issue with the once-dominant PDP?

They ought to have expanded on their 16 years of reign over the nation. As someone who has managed a political party for a considerable amount of time, I can basically tell you that the PDP’s issues include indiscipline and a lack of party control, which again verges on a lack of internal democracy within the organization. The PDP failed to remember that a party is appreciated if it has complete control. The party is in charge in a political party system. Therefore, the party is meant to place each member where they belong, regardless of how powerful you may believe you are or how much money you may believe will allow you to get away with certain actions. You are free to leave the party if you do not wish to be a part of it. Both joining and leaving a political party are entirely optional. However, the PDP sat down and catered more to the wealth of their disobedient members. Additionally, there were (and still are) blatant instances of anti-party activity that, even when I was the party chairman, would never have been accepted for a day. However, they proceeded to turn the other face. When the former governor of Rivers State assembled a group of five governors, whom they dubbed the G5, the PDP was there. Additionally, they were obviously against the party’s bid for the president in the 2023 election. Although they all worked against their party, the former governor of Rivers State’s was the most notable. Nothing happened, and he never feigned anti-party activity. From then on, the PDP adopted a culture of indiscipline. A party enters a free fall when it is in that circumstance. The PDP has been in free collapse as well. Who would have guessed that the entire PDP would now be pleading with people to come around? They are everywhere, sending prominent figures like Professor Jerry Gana, appearing on television, and pleading with Peter Obi to come and accept their presidential ticket. In the past, the PDP presidential ticket was quite popular, but now they are pleading with Peter Obi. Among those pleading with Peter Obi to come and accept their ticket is the governor of Bauchi State. They are telling him that if he accepts the ticket, he would undoubtedly become president and that no one will be able to defeat him. They obviously want to utilize him to improve the party’s reputation. Thus, this is how much the PDP has declined. All of this is taking place in the public sphere. Although they and everyone else are aware of it, it is regrettable that they have not yet begun to solve it. Some of them think they are taking action to address the issue, but as long as they are unable to enforce their will and hold those stubborn party members accountable—a necessity for any party with any semblance of discipline and control—their problem will persist. And 2027 is drawing near. It’s a shame that those who don’t want the party to continue to exist are still there while disguising their anti-party actions.

For the presidency in particular, Governor Charles Soludo has been courting the All Progressives Congress. According to some, it stems from a sense of panic and desperation for reelection. Considering that Anambra is the sole APGA state, what are your thoughts on this?

APGA might lose Anambra State because to Soludo. This is due to the fact that Soludo had the chance to reconcile with APGA. I went to him directly because the party was already in danger when he joined APGA. “You are coming in at a very auspicious time,” I told him. You did not start the argument in APGA, so you are not involved in it. No faction can be assigned to you specifically. You are now the party’s de facto leader because you are the only governor. And that you might get these divisive figures to the roundtable and engage in dialogue by using your position and leveraging it. The house divided against itself cannot stand, therefore I told him, “If you want me to also play a role in that reconciliation as a former chairman and the party’s founder, I would be available.” I felt that our chat was quite fruitful and healthy. And before I left him, he said as much. We went over all of these in his Enugu home for three hours. If you read my book, the final paragraph essentially praised Soludo and the prospects for APGA’s future expansion. “A New Vista Beckons” is the caption for that chapter, which essentially extolled Soludo’s virtues, his background, his profile when he assumed office, and the expectation that he would not only succeed as governor but also bring about peace in APGA. However, he rejected all of those offers, choosing instead to set up camp with one of the groups, and he spent a staggering amount of money on this. What has he done with the party’s soul now that he has cornered it after everything? “The idea was for you to go for a second tenure,” I informed him. Since you have the right of first refusal as the current governor, you will be able to run for a second term without having to pay this type of money. There’s no one coming to take it away. Furthermore, no rational member of the APGA will oppose the only governor, who would serve as the foundation for future electoral victories. However, he didn’t find any of that appealing. He finally gained control of the party, and the chairman he had elevated to the position of chairman, who had previously been his PA, went back to his formal position. Additionally, he no longer talks, jumps around television houses, and does all of that. As a result, the party has neither advanced or improved, and they have all returned to their cocoon in Awka. Instead, the party in Anambra is split up into a number of dissident factions. What do you want to do with your house like that? The president’s announcement that the party had endorsed him during his visit to Anambra was motivated by the same desperation; in fact, he was the first to do so twice, before the APC. Naturally, I know that Tinubu cannot be duped now, as the president is a party man. He is aware that an elected official has no obligation to support any individual on behalf of a party. If a party has made such a decision, the governor should not make such a statement; rather, the national chairperson of the party should. He was aware that he was only entertaining the audience. The president is committed to running for a second term, so if he wants to, let him go and live in the Villa. Playing around and playing with a state like Anambra will make him appear less politically smart than he has been given credit for.

Do you believe the governor has done enough to persuade Ndi Anambra to reelect him in November, aside from the divide within the ruling APGA in Anambra?

Well, I don’t get very encouraging information from that place. Additionally, I was aware that the November election this year might not favor Saludo because most of the roads are in poor condition, the rainy season would have arrived, as I had long predicted, and some of the roads I saw being commissioned would be washed off because I didn’t think they would withstand a serious rainy season. Additionally, as the rain continues to fall, the majority of these roadways are collapsing. The thing is being used against him by his opponents. You know, some roads have been constructed, but they are so bad that not even the rain can save them. And the administration can only truly take pride in this infrastructure. Not much more than what Peter Obi said and did in the areas of health, education, and everything else. Only those routes are in question, and they aren’t surviving the season. Simply put, I don’t think he will prevail in a free and fair election.

Because of Soludo’s harsh criticism of Peter Obi, Obi’s detractors have something to discuss. As the previous head of the party that supported the two men’s candidacies for governor of Anambra, what do you think about this?

Attacking Peter Obi is detrimental to Soludo’s political standing. I don’t see his political reasoning for attacking someone who has become so famous, so I’m not sure why he is criticizing Peter Obi. Therefore, attacking Peter Obi is not in Soludo’s best interests. Obi is now a major figure in Nigerian politics, having advanced from being a local champion to the national stage. Therefore, attacking someone like that is similar to attacking Chief Odumegwu Ojukwu or someone else attacking Nnamdi Kanu. These individuals have already left their mark on the public’s hearts. Targeting these individuals thus becomes politically naïve. You may choose to ignore them and carry on with your activities, but refrain from attacking. so he can’t get more votes for that attack. Rather, it will subtract from what he would have received.

After leaving Anambra, how do you feel about the ADC coalition? Given that Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and Atiku Abubakar are all supposedly vying for the presidency, some claimed that personal goals could destroy the alliance before the 2027 election.

To begin with, I have no idea that Peter Obi is an ADC member with a card. The PDP wouldn’t have been pleading with him to visit if he were.

Defection is possible, though.

(Cuts in) You can’t sign up for a party overnight, and you’re defecting once more before you can say “Jack Robinson.” Before they can find an excuse to quit, some people at that level stay for a while. Instead, you come in today and go out tomorrow. Therefore, he is not a card-carrying member of ADC. He’s still freelancing, in my opinion. He is still supposed to belong in labor. He hasn’t actually left the Labour Party, and he hasn’t joined any other. I’m not sure if Peter Obi will be an official member of the ADC because if he is, the PDP and other groups that have been pleading with him to run won’t have been showing there. However, the ADC has made it very clear through their current chairman, David Mark, that there will be no preferred candidates and that the convention will be free and fair for everyone to attend and run. These words reassure people that democratic practices will be let to unfold. The presidential primary of a party is, of course, a delegate election. Therefore, if someone wishes to win, he must put in a lot of effort to get as many delegates as nominations. That’s my perspective on it.

Given that many people thought the electoral umpire tampered with the last election, do you, as a stakeholder in Nigerian politics, have any faith or confidence in INEC ahead of the general election in 2027?

For someone like me, the word “trust” is too strong, yet I also can’t claim that I don’t trust. I say this because, to a great extent, technology was let to play out during the most recent election. Unfortunately, we learned that there was a malfunction at the presidential level shortly after. Furthermore, there were many questions raised because the presidential election and the National Assembly election were held on the same day and at the same time, and this error only happened at the presidential election level. The typical Nigerian has no question regarding the purpose of that malfunction. Thus, the National Assembly is responsible for this. The new Electoral Act has not yet been seen. I am aware that the changes were taken to make sure that issues like glitches don’t happen again, that the elections are resourced, and that the results are sent straight from the polling places so that voters can see the results instantly. These are some of the things that we have not yet seen, but if they are implemented, the next election may have greater legitimacy. And because even the last election’s turnout was poor, we simply hope that more people will show up this time. Regardless of your outcome, it was evident that Peter Pbi and Atiku Abubakar received up to 13.7 million votes, according to INEC data, in the most recent election. Then, with 8.9 million votes, Tinubu became victorious. The most straightforward explanation is that more Nigerians who cast ballots opposed Tinubu winning the presidency. Therefore, the fact that only 8.9 out of 13 million people cast ballots for him indicates that our system needs to be reviewed. To all intents and purposes, that win was illegitimate because he did not have the support of the majority of people. And for that reason, I agree with a former vice president who stated—and I have been suggesting—that our election should be conducted according to the norm in multi-party democracies, which states that the victor is the candidate who receives 50% plus one vote. This indicates that you have received the majority of the vote. This kind of outcome, when someone with 8.9 million votes is ruling over 13 million people who rejected him, is not possible.

Nigeria, Philippines Deepen Cooperation on Labour and Migration Issues

0

Among other things, the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Republic of the Philippines have committed to deepening their bilateral relations on labor and migration.

This was the conclusion of a high-level discussion held in Abuja on Wednesday, when Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, welcomed the Philippine team headed by Secretary of Migrant Workers Hon. Hans Leo J. Cacdac.

Amb. Tuggar acknowledged the historical connections between the two nations, which date back to Nigeria’s independence, in his opening remarks.

The Minister emphasized the significant contributions made by Filipino professionals in Nigeria throughout the years, especially in the fields of education, aviation, and maritime.

“Filipinos taught a lot of Nigerians in my generation, particularly in STEM subjects. These connections foster the development of cultural bridges and go beyond the exchange of knowledge, according to Tuggar.

According to him, Nigeria is eager to absorb the Philippines’ internationally acclaimed method of managing foreign workers as part of President Bola Tinubu’s foreign policy agenda, which is based on democracy, demography, development, and diaspora.

“As the Philippines does, we want to make sure our own diaspora workers are empowered and protected with respect, dignity, and full government support,” he stated.

Additionally, the Minister mentioned Nigeria’s Technical Aid Corps (TAC) program, which was founded in 1987 and sends qualified Nigerians to ACP (African, Caribbean, and Pacific) nations.

Amb. Tuggar disclosed ambitions to turn the project into a profitable business while also looking for further foreign cooperation.

Cacdac responded by expressing President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to strengthen labor ties with partner nations, such as Nigeria, where Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) are employed.

“We are pleased to see that Nigeria has been a safe and welcoming place for some of our nationals,” Cacdac said after meeting with some of them here. “We are here to strengthen coordination and protection mechanisms and to build on that goodwill.”

Deputy Minister for International Cooperation John Al Rasul, Assistant Secretary for Pre-Employment Concerns Juleen Abito, and Director for Anti-Illegal Recruitment and Human Trafficking Giant Mendez were among the high-ranking officials in the Philippine group.

The employees of the Philippine Embassy in Abuja accompanied them.

Cacdac underlined how crucial it is for both countries to learn from one another in areas like labor system development, anti-trafficking initiatives, and migratory governance. In order to better meet the requirements of Filipino workers in Nigeria and improve communication with local authorities, he also formally asked that a specialized labor office be established within the Philippine Embassy in Abuja.

Our objective is to use institutional cooperation to further fortify interpersonal relationships. Building safer migratory routes for our countrymen and exchanging knowledge about work practices are two examples of this,” Cacdac said.

Secretary Cacdac thanked the Nigerian government for its hospitality and for encouraging greater interaction between the two countries in a press conference following a private meeting.

“The Nigerian government and people, as well as the Honorable Foreign Minister, have our sincere gratitude for the cordial welcome.

“We have received a clear directive from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to strengthen our bilateral labor relations for the benefit of both nations.”

Cacdac described Nigeria as a “safe haven” for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and underlined the Philippines’ desire in bolstering safety for Filipino migrant workers there.

Additionally, he disclosed that the Philippines is looking into the possibilities of opening an Abuja Migrant Workers Office.

“With targeted programs and services, this will enable us to better serve our people here and their families back home,” he continued.

According to Cacdac, his delegation will also meet with the Ministry of Labor in Nigeria today to discuss bilateral labor agreements, capacity building, and the sharing of information about labor laws and safeguards.

In order to expedite processes and enhance comprehension of each nation’s systems, Secretary Cacdac emphasized the value of reciprocal information sharing.

“Our president has ordered us to streamline domestic bureaucratic procedures, particularly for foreign workers.”

“We support the welfare of both our employees overseas and foreign workers in the Philippines, and we are signatories to the UN Convention on the Protection of Migrant Workers.”

“We are honored and delighted to welcome Secretary Cacdac,” stated Ambassador Tuggar. The Philippines has long been a pioneer in the development of human resources, and many Filipinos have made significant contributions to Nigeria, particularly in the fields of education, aviation, and the marine industry.

As a populous country, the Philippines fits into Nigeria’s demographic diplomacy, according to Tuggar, who also emphasized the strategic alignment of this alliance with President Bola Tinubu’s “4D” foreign policy, which stands for Democracy, Development, Demography, and Diaspora.

“We want our employees to travel overseas in safety and respect. About nine agreements with the Philippines are still outstanding, and Secretary Cacdac has suggested a tenth that would concentrate exclusively on labor, Tuggar stated.

Tambuwal Blasts APC: ‘I Couldn’t Stay Amid What’s Happening in the Country’

According to Aminu Tambuwal, the former governor of Sokoto State, the Africa Democratic Congress (ADC) opposition coalition is not supporting any one person’s presidential ambition but rather is working to save Nigeria.
Speaking in Sokoto shortly after being greeted by a resounding wave of fans, Tambuwal pledged that the coalition will soon present a comprehensive policy program that would address insecurity, boost the economy, and enhance the welfare of its constituents.
He criticized the All Progressives Congress-led government for failing to handle the economy, insecurity, and the well-being of Nigerians, calling governance “human faceless.”
He reaffirmed his commitment to democracy, the rule of law, and responsible leadership. I can’t be forced to give up these values by any organization. I left the APC in 2018 because of the injustices occurring in this nation. All of the reasons I left are now even more evident.

Despite the President’s authority, he claimed, no meaningful action has been taken, such as hiring more security guards.

Tambuwal responded to assertions that the alliance is being formed to further Atiku Abubakar’s goals by saying, “This coalition is not about any individual.” Nigeria has to be saved. The NNPP, PDP, Labour Party, and other political parties are uniting to provide Nigerians with a viable option.

Tambuwal remembered his opposition to any sudden elimination of fuel subsidies without compensatory measures.

“I cautioned against eliminating subsidies without a structure to safeguard the public while I was Speaker. The cost of its unilateral removal is being felt by Nigerians.

The senator asked Nigerians to support leaders who are dedicated to genuine reform, promising that the alliance will provide a model of governance based on competence, accountability, and compassion.

Reflections on Goodluck Jonathan’s Possible Return: He Who the Cap Fits Should Wear It (Part One)

0

Anticipation permeates the air. The fire seems to be nearby, and there is smoke all over. Deafening excitement is building to a crescendo: Jonathan is on the way! Jonathan will arrive soon! The jury is already out in full force, as expected, with a number of journalists, pundits, and self-described political strategists analyzing the potential ramifications of former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan returning to the political scene for a potential 2027 presidential endeavor.

Almost all opinion writers concur that his return to politics will result in a seismic upheaval in the power dynamics being calculated by the various political platforms, including the ruling APC, the main opposition PDP, and the rebranded ADC parties. For the simple reason that the North will remember and honor him for the massive pro-people and pro-poor programs and policies he unleashed during his first presidential term—programs that have been diminished and abandoned over the past ten years—his inclusive and compassionate style of governance, and, of course, the fact that he will only be constitutionally eligible for one term in office, many people think he will win handily if he runs. The South East, his adopted geopolitical base, will also support him, especially if Peter Obi’s name is not on the ballot, even if his South South base would vote for him with overwhelming and decisive force.

I don’t intend to address every opinion piece that has already been written about former President Jonathan’s alleged second coming in this three-part essay. Some of these articles are direct, measured, and objective, while others are written by paid hacker types who aim to damage his reputation and image. For now, I want to let his words and those of others speak for him and about him—his compassionate nature, his love for peace and good governance, his liberal outlook and tolerance, and the significant socioeconomic change he brought about in the country between 2010 and 2015. I will say a few words about the ongoing media conversation surrounding the Jonathan phenomenon.

Reviving his legacy and telling his story through his and others’ words is like traveling back in time to Nigeria, when influential figures like Dr. M I Okpara, Sir Ahmadu Bello, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Sir Tafawa Balewa, and Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe walked the land they lead with moral clarity and intellectual force. You can then study their sayings and wise words, peruse their works, and hold them accountable using their words. Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is one such leader—certainly not other presidents who cannot even be remembered by a single catchphrase!

With my modest commentary, I would like to rapidly offer to the Nigerian public and the international society at large a collection of these profound words and deep thoughts. This presentation approach will be carried over into parts two and three of this article.

On Political Issues Without Resentment

“My political aspirations are not worth any Nigerian’s blood.”

Jonathan Goodluck, President

This peace mantra has gained international recognition, is a source of moral clarity, and is being used as a benchmark to evaluate how African political leaders behave while in government.

President Jonathan remains a man of peace.

The inconceivable was done by President Jonathan in 2015 when he called an election with no final results yet for the opposition candidate. He had the ability to incite conflict, but for whatever reason he decided to choose peace.

― Journalist and public scholar Simon Kolawole

Kolawole was spot on in terms of his mental and visual clarity. He has a great perspective that cannot be improved.

As a Transformational Leader, Jonathan

“Dr. Jonathan’s innovative programs, such as YouWin, which the World Bank has determined is likely the most successful business growth competition globally, helped millions of young people escape poverty.” In addition, Dr. Jonathan had the impressive record of constructing 165 elementary and high schools and 14 universities for Nigeria’s young, an accomplishment that significantly increased the country’s GDP since, as any leader should understand, the more you study, the more you make.

— President of the Republic of Ghana John Dramani Mahama

There is nothing more to add to these stirring words from one of Africa’s greatest modern leaders.

A Forgiving and Caring Leader

I’ve learned from history and my own experience that using power as a sword rather than a shield will wear you down and inflict unimaginable suffering for the people you serve. People who observe power from the sidelines much too frequently mistakenly think that the strong man is the one who wields power. It isn’t true, though. Controlled strength is what is meant by real power.

—Goodluck Jonathan, President

Indeed, rather than being the opposites, the main components of presidential power are compassion, tolerance, and controlled authority. Jonathan’s famous statement has been staring us in the face ever since he left office.

Jonathan as the Face of Democracy in Africa

Because of his legacy of a democratic and peaceful handover of power, Goodluck Jonathan has become the face of democracy in Africa. Africa would quickly rise to become one of the world’s most stable and developed regions if all African leaders adopted the Jonathan Doctrine.

—Joe Trippi, popular novelist and political strategist from the United States

I agree that a lot of African leaders have not yet adopted the Jonathan Doctrine, which is why the region continues to struggle. Sit-tight civilian dictators continue to be prevalent throughout the continent, suppressing the opposition and misusing term-limit clauses in the constitution. They should put the Jonathan Doctrine into effect and give Africa some breathing room.

President Jonathan on the Moral Need for Authority

“My goal is to start an idea-based campaign, not a defamatory one. Love, not hate, is what I’ve come to preach. Our quest for nationhood has been bogged down by the dividing tendencies of the past, and I have come to break you free. I have no adversaries. We have a similar identity and you are all my buddies.

— Jonathan, President

We last heard of this kind of moral clarity during the years of Nigeria’s struggle against British colonialism and the establishment of a post-colonial nation, before Jonathan arrived to say these incredibly transforming words.

What should I say at the end of this first section of a piece that I have been considering for a long time and have finally found the confidence to write? President Jonathan’s opponents and their army of persistent translators have dubbed him names that cannot be printed. He’s been called weak, inept, and uninformed. The people who said these hurtful things have withdrawn in embarrassment ten years after he left office because the true inept and ignorant people have come calling. The remaining Chibok girls have been deserted by those who used their awful situation as a weapon to overthrow him in an election, eleven years after the abduction of the Chibok girls. It goes without saying that the Dapchi girls have subsequently been added to the expanding list of citizens and girls kidnapped between 2015 and 2025. The Unity Fountain in Abuja, where the Bring Back the Girls protesters had set up camp for months in an attempt to overthrow him and his administration, has been closed, fenced, and padlocked with DSS and police officers on duty.

I’m a Muslim, a Northerner, a public intellectual, and I’m from Gombe State. President Jonathan is an Ijaw person of Bayelsa state and a devout Christian. However, if he were to run for reelection, I would be happy to support him, advocate for him, and cast my vote because I believe in him and his historic promise as a revolutionary leader.

The Executive Director of the Leadership and Governance Training Collective, Adamu Musa Abdulkadir, wrote from Gombe, Gombe state.

She stated that she will take a different tack in 2027 in an interview with Behind The Fame TV.
Two ambassadorship engagements worth 10 million and 15 million naira were reportedly lost as a result of her choice to back President Bola Tinubu in 2023.

As she put it: “The fact is that I cannot be the same person I was in 2023 and 2027.” That isn’t possible since It doesn’t matter how much is seen; I know what I missed without collecting a kobo. “I nearly lost my marriage, but the important thing is that I made my own decision and followed my conscience.”

The performing arts directorate section of the APC’s 2023 presidential campaign committee in Lagos State hired Daramola-Salako as their media assistant.

She described Tinubu as a father figure who had supported her on many occasions, including her wedding, yet she remained faithful to him in spite of criticism.

Her husband, Kayode Salako, a supporter of Peter Obi and the chairman of the Labour Party in Lagos, supported her position.

Nigerians can choose who they want to support, he said.

As a benefactor to their family, he said, they would rather not to support any political candidate than to oppose Tinubu.
