Insecurity: Nasarawa Varsity approves recruitment of vigilantes

0

The recruitment of 20 vigilantes to be strategically stationed in various off-campus sites is a significant move that Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK) has taken in the fight against insecurity.

In an interview with news reporters, NSUK’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abdullahi Modibbo, said that the institution is committed to reducing the threat of kidnapping and guaranteeing the security of both employees and students.

“The institution’s management is concerned about kidnapping, despite the fact that we are aware it is a nationwide issue.

Because we collaborate with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, we don’t have many issues for those who are on campus.
“For those who live off campus, we have authorized the hiring of 20 vigilantes who will receive strategic training to carry out their duties in all the nooks and crannys of the several off-campus areas. One of the steps we are doing to guarantee the safety of the faculty and students is this, stated Modibo.

Recently, some of the institution’s teachers and students were kidnapped; the kidnappers only released them after being paid ransom.
A few days ago, when her kidnappers received an undisclosed sum of money, Dr. Monica Adokwe, a lecturer at the university’s Faculty of Administration, was set free.

“We are optimistic that Ukeyima will promote fair trade practices in the industry amongst the providers and consumers of shipping and port services.

“Over the years, millions of naira have been lost to shipping companies by freight forwarders. We, therefore, want to charge our beloved brother to ensure that the quality, quantity, and cost of services in the entire transportation and logistics chain are moderated and standardized in line with global best practices.

“On this note, the Benue NASS Caucus wishes to thank Mr. President and SGF Akume for Ukeyima’s appointment and hope that he will make our state proud as he has always done”.

Gbajabiamila: The Peter Who Saw Tomorrow

By Okanga Agila

In the world of politics, loyalty is a virtue that is often tested, and those who remain steadfast in their commitment to their mentors are few and far between. It is a rare sight to witness a politician who remains steadfastly committed to their mentor, regardless of the challenges and temptations that come their way.

Femi Gbajabiamila, the former speaker of the House of Representatives and current Chief of Staff in Nigeria, is one such individual who epitomizes unwavering loyalty. His unwavering devotion to his mentor, Asiwaju Tinubu, has spanned over two decades, with Gbajabiamila proving himself time and again as a true political stalwart. Standing the rest of time, it is now well grounded into everyone’s consciousness that Gbajabiamila’s unwavering loyalty is not only commendable, but also a testament to his character and foresight.

In the tumultuous world of politics where “trust” is a scarce rare gem, and loyalty is often challenged, one would wonder how a man like Gbajabiamila could be steadfast with a single man in a political journey for more than a decade. With time, the answer to this mystery wasn’t Farfetch, Gbaja was simply a man that saw tomorrow while in the present.

Gbajabiamila’s loyalty to Asiwaju Tinubu has withstood the test of time. For over two decades, he has remained faithful to his mentor, never wavering in his commitment. Through the highs and lows of political landscapes, Gbajabiamila has consistently stood by Tinubu’s side, providing invaluable support and guidance. For example, in 2011, when Tinubu was opposed by some APC members in his bid to become the party’s presidential candidate, Gbajabiamila remained steadfast in his support. He also stood by Tinubu during the 2015 general elections, when Tinubu’s political enemies tried to sabotage his campaign.

Different from the case of Peter in the Bible who denied Jesus Christ 3 times in one day, Gbajabiamila has faced numerous temptations to forsake his loyalty to Asiwaju Tinubu, yet he has remained resolute. He has turned down lucrative offers, political alliances, and opportunities for personal gain, all in the name of preserving his commitment to his mentor. This unwavering loyalty is a rare quality in the political arena, where self-interest often takes precedence over principles. Gbajabiamila’s ability to resist such temptations is a testament to his unwavering dedication to the ideals and vision of his mentor.

Being familiar with the system of political-democracy, one can tactically conclude that loyalty in politics is often seen as a double-edged sword, as it can be viewed as blind obedience or a hindrance to personal growth. However, one of the most remarkable aspects of Gbajabiamila’s loyalty is his ability to see the potential in Asiwaju Tinubu when others were still skeptical. While many viewed Tinubu as a mere aspirant, Gbajabiamila recognized the qualities that would make him a great President to the Nation. His foresight and belief in Tinubu’s capabilities have been vindicated over the years, as Tinubu has risen to become a prominent figure in Nigerian politics. Gbajabiamila’s ability to identify leadership potential in his mentor showcases his astute political acumen and his unwavering belief in the transformative power of visionary leaders.

This bond created with Asiwaju in reciprocation has resulted into jealousy from detractors within and outside the party. This are disloyal sycophants that know not the value of loyalty. They are just bunch of new and old emergency activists who seek to fill their stomach infrastructure by denigrating Femi Gbajabiamila, with a hope of eliminating him, and filling up his close seat with Asiwaju.

These are people that are unstable , and can’t weather through the smallest storm before jumping ship to another master. A group of vile unpatriotic followers who are unworthy to lace the latchet on Gbajabiamila’s shoe, let alone standing in a position of criticizing him. All their efforts to pull Gbajabiamila down is visible to the blind, and audible to the deaf that everything done is for their own selfish interest.

Gbajabiamila’s leadership style is characterized by inclusivity, transparency, and a genuine desire to serve the people. it is only fair and just that he be given the opportunity to work and contribute to the progress of Nigeria. It will be in everyone’s interest that the detractors and false political-activist keep quiet, hereby allowing him to continue his work, which would further ensure the continuity of strong and effective leadership in Nigeria’s political landscape.

Throughout his career, Gbajabiamila has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills. As the current Chief of Staff , he has consistently displayed the ability to rally his colleagues, bridge divides, and push for meaningful change. His effectiveness as a leader has not only been recognized within his own party but also across party lines.

Given his unwavering loyalty, his ability to resist temptations, his visionary insight, and his exceptional leadership skills, it is imperative that Gbajabiamila be allowed to continue his impactful work. His experience, dedication, and political acumen make him an invaluable asset not only to Asiwaju Tinubu but to the Nigerian political landscape as a whole. Gbajabiamila’s track record speaks for itself, as he has consistently demonstrated his commitment to public service and his ability to navigate the complex world of politics.

Femi Gbajabiamila’s unwavering loyalty to Asiwaju Tinubu is a testament to his character, integrity, and political acumen. Through countless tests and temptations, he has remained steadfast, proving himself to be a rare political stalwart. His visionary insight and belief in Tinubu’s potential have been vindicated over the years.

Gbajabiamila has a clear vision for Nigeria. He wants to see a Nigeria that is prosperous, united, and democratic. He believes that Nigeria can achieve its full potential if its leaders are honest, competent, and committed to the public good.

As the former Speaker When Gbajabiamila said that he was going to use his position as Speaker of the House of Representatives to improve the lives of ordinary Nigerians, he did not just speak, he spoke it into manifestation in deed and action. He has pledged to work with other members of the National Assembly to pass laws that will create jobs, reduce poverty, and improve access to quality education and healthcare.

In a political landscape marred by opportunism and self-interest, Gbajabiamila stands out as a beacon of loyalty and integrity. His ability to see beyond the present and envision a future where Tinubu becomes president demonstrates his astuteness and visionary leadership. It is imperative that we recognize and appreciate such qualities in our politicians and allow Gbajabiamila the opportunity to work and contribute to the progress of Nigeria. By doing so, we not only honor his loyalty but also pave the way for a brighter future for our nation.

Nigerians should be grateful for Gbajabiamila’s loyalty to Tinubu and his commitment to working for a better Nigeria. He is a true asset to the country, and Nigerians should give him a chance to work.

It is time to acknowledge the Peter who saw tomorrow and grant Femi Gbajabiamila the opportunity to continue his exceptional service to the nation.

He had a brief illness before passing away in the early hours of Sunday.

The well-known monarch will be buried in accordance with Islamic customs after passing away at the age of 95.

Recall that in 1997, the late Prince Abubakar Audu, the governor of Kogi State at the time, crowned the late Ado Ibrahim as the Ohinoyi of Ebira land.

He succeeded his predecessor, Alhaji Sanni Omolorim, who ruled from 1957 until 1997.

The late Ado Ibrahim, who was born on February 7, 1929, completed his primary education in 1940 at the Native Authority (NA) primary school in Okene, Northern Region (now Kogi State). He also attended both western nursery and Quranic schools.

He attended Ondo Boys High School for his secondary schooling before transferring to Oduduwa College, from which he graduated in 1949.

He graduated from the London School of Economics in 1954 with a bachelor’s degree in economics and Harvard Business School in 1959 with a master’s degree.

INEC worries abouy Violence threat in Kogi, says REC

0

Dr. Gabriel Longpet, the Kogi State Resident Electoral Commissioner, discusses many connected matters with GBENGA ODOGUN, including the INECC’s readiness for the state’s governorship election on November 11.

You voiced worry about the low number of PVCs being obtained. Has anything changed prior to the PVC collection deadline?

The deadline for collecting PVCs was October 9, but that day has passed. In Kogi State, we found that there were 128,000 uncollected PVCs. The commission decided it was a good idea to allow more people to claim theirs by coming forward. Those who asked for a transfer and those who vandalized their cards made up the bulk of those impacted. Since then, we have proceeded, and regretfully, after just four weeks, we were unable to provide additional PVCs to individuals. Potential voters didn’t show up to cast their ballots. In four weeks, just roughly 20,000 of the 128,000 were gathered.

In certain regions of the state, there have been threats of violence. Do you find this concerning?

Indeed, I am worried, but I also can’t turn a blind eye to what’s going on in my immediate surroundings. Nonetheless, I am aware that there are legal guidelines that specify what the public and politicians should do, and that breaking the law has legal repercussions. My role is to provide the rules and necessary framework and to converse with people as I have been doing on radio, television, and other forms of communication; I do not have the authority to make arrests. People need to be aware of the legislation, and they shouldn’t run for office wearing masks.

For example, in order to allow political parties to launch a successful campaign or gather votes, there should be no firearms, no use of thugs, no use of harsh language, and all government agencies should be on high alert. This would ensure that November 11th is a nice occasion. However, the security agencies should be handling what has been occurring and what we have heard. All I can do is let them know what the politicians are doing and are not doing, and then let them take it from there.

What is the Independent National Electoral Commission’s stance regarding the usage of electronic results transmission on election day?

I find it incomprehensible that after the previously provided explanation, individuals are still asking the same issue. The results are uploaded from polling places after they are recorded on form EC8A and BVAS, which is used to extract the party scores from form EC8A and send them by I-REV to the collation center. There is no electronic transfer of results. That is an additional degree of openness that INEC is attempting to implement. People were accustomed to results being tampered with before they reached the collation centers in the past. To help the collation officer in this instance, the actual result has already been transferred and is accessible on the I-REV. They will review it, compare it to the physical result that will be brought in person to the collation center, and determine whether there are any discrepancies. Although he (the collation officer) is not required to collate that result, it is acceptable provided it corresponds with the result sent by the I-REV. Therefore, while INEC does not explicitly state that results would be transmitted electronically, results from polling places will be uploaded to the collation center.

Prior to this election, a number of topics that touched on the election were thoroughly examined at stakeholder meetings, but that hasn’t happened this time around. Is this the case?

That is untrue. Recently, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, who was present, and representatives of the National Commission for Voters Education met with leaders of media outlets in Kogi State as well as civil society organizations. We also hosted discussions with political parties and stakeholders. The last gathering we had with political parties was, I believe, on the 12th of this month when we formally gave the voter registration forms to each and every registered political party running in this election. We also used these forums to implore politicians to follow the law when it comes to campaigning and gatherings. Meetings for stakeholders have been held with a variety of groups, including women, youth, and other groups. Thus, discussions have not ended.

What preparations have you made for regions near rivers and locations that might flood during the election?

We have sufficient preparations in place. Officers from headquarters visited us earlier to evaluate our registration area centers (RAC centers), which are where our materials will be stored until election day. In addition to identifying potential flood zones, we have also developed plans to move polling sites and centers to higher elevations so that voters can cast their ballots there. One of our voting locations, Ganaja Primary School, for example, flooded the previous year; this year, we anticipate a similar situation. We have substituted arrangements. Our RAC center in Ganaja has been moved to a higher location, and the Chairmen was notified of this last week when they visited. In order to guarantee that no one is denied the opportunity to vote, procedures have been established.

To what extent have the security authorities assured you about the election?

We have the Inter Consultative Service on Security, or ICES. We just had one; it’s with the police, with the Commissioner of Police serving as the co-chair. As the Chairman, I am joined by representatives from the DSS, Army, Immigration, Civil Defense, ICPC, EFCC, and other agencies responsible for maintaining security. We have determined which locations are most likely to provide security issues.

The committee is trying to make sure we have enough security, along with other agencies. We have also located a region similar to Bagana where conflicts arise between farmers and herders. Where people used to reside is no longer where they live. We have arranged for their transfer to more secure locations so they can vote. There are impacted polling places in Bagana; nonetheless, we have taken the necessary precautions to guarantee that voters don’t feel afraid to cast their ballots.

The same is true for regions like Kupa and Egon; access to these areas requires passing through the states of Kwara or Niger. We have enough plans in place to make sure that, in the unlikely event that we are unable to transport the supplies by road, we will still be able to get them there via helicopter. We are in communication with the Air Force to explore the potential of using their aircraft to help us access those locations. In an effort to lower the likelihood that our ad hoc workers will need to travel and incur additional dangers, we have also started training polling officials who live in such locations.

The delay in paying ad hoc workers’ allowances is one of the issues that typically arises from their use. Has that been resolved?

Here in Kogi, we did everything we could to make sure that everyone who ran for office in February got paid. Regretfully, you have a variety of bank accounts these days, including O’pay, Palmpay, Kuda, and others. The Nigerian Central Bank does not recognize them. These accounts are not accepted when money is deposited into them. Another factor is that people utilize their relatives’ accounts, which do not match up with the accounts of those who participated in the election.

To get alternate bank accounts, we need to give them a call back. We searched over our records after learning last week that we had not paid 57 ad hoc workers, and we found that some of them had been paid using different bank account information. To make sure they had been paid, we asked them to print out their account statements. However, this time only legitimate bank accounts will be accepted instead of O’pay and Palmpay.

N2.8bn deal: Bala-Usman responds to Amaechi, calling ex-minister’s assertion untrue

0

Hadiza Bala-Usman, a former managing director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, has refuted the claim made by Rotimi Amaechi, a former minister of transportation, that she gave a contract valued at N2.8 billion while she was in government.

During a Thursday event in Lagos, the former minister accused the former head of the NPA of leaving out the offenses that resulted in her dismissal from the position in her book, “Stepping on Toes: My Odyssey at the Nigerian Ports Authority.”

Amaechi claimed that Bala-Usman, the managing director of NPA with a N2.5 million approval cap, approved a N2.8 billion contract because there were too many lies in the book.

But in a signed statement dated October 28, Bala-Usman, the President’s Special Advisor on Policy Coordination, questioned where Amaechi refuted the minister’s claim.

She said that the accusation was not included in the list of offenses that she received in response to a question from the Amaechi-instituted Panel of Inquiry.

A portion of the statement said, “Mr. Amaechi claimed in his tirade that I gave a contract worth N2.8 billion. That is untrue. This claim was not included in the list of infractions that the former minister sent me in response to a question about the findings of the Administrative Panel of Inquiry he established, so I’m not sure where he obtained the N2.8 billion figure from.

She pointed out that the only matter pertaining to a contract award in the inquiry was the emergency acquisition of functioning cars in the wake of the NPA’s October 21, 2020, vandalism of its Marina, Lagos offices.

State assets: Court overrides Amaechi and Cole’s arrest warrant
In response to the question, the former head of the NPA declared she never violated the Procurement Act.

“In response to your question regarding the N1.2 billion expenditure, I explained that we made the procurement under the provisions of Sections 43 (1) (a), (2), (3), and (4) of the Public Procurement Act, 2007 (PPA), which permits procuring entities to purchase items due to an emergency and obtain the necessary approval upon completion of the procurement,” the speaker stated. The book’s pages 166–171 contain a thorough account of the answer to the question, including the authorization that was granted and the purported increase of the car prices.

Regarding the claims about the waivers given to certain people while she was in charge, she claimed the question and her response supporting it were in the book.

“The former minister also discussed waivers, which the FMOT’s inquiry addressed in Item F,” the speaker continues. Pages 171–175 of the book contain the query and my answer outlining the facts and rationale for each waiver that the NPA administration has granted.

“He misrepresented the information in Query C, which claimed that a supplemental agreement concerning the Lekki Deep Sea Port Concession Project, which was published on pages 163-165 of the book, had been executed unilaterally.”

The former head of the NPA added that she was not aware of the ten counts Amaechi alleged the tribunal had found her guilty on.

She questioned whether the non-remittance of N165 billion to the Consolidated Revenue Fund was included in the figures.
I have not received any such indictments, thus I am unaware of these 10 counts. However, may I ask him if these counts encompass the purported non-remittance of N165 billion in operating surpluses to the Consolidated Revenue Fund, for which he applied for and received permission from former President Muhammadu Buhari to look into the NPA’s accounts and my “resignation from office”?
“”Is it not true that this serious accusation was not mentioned in the inquiry I got from the ministry following the panel’s work?” she questioned.

Tinubu’s loyalists are pressing for Gbajabiamila’s dismissal

0

Reports have surfaced suggesting that the tenure of the Chief of Staff, CoS, under President Femi Gbajabiamila may be coming to an end due to accusations that he has been giving presidential positions to the highest-bidding parties.

The discontent among Tinubu’s supporters is intensifying, as they are determined to ensure that Gbajabiamila is gradually removed from the Presidential Villa.

Recall that ten Resident Electoral Commissioners (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were appointed by the President last week.
The Chief of Staff is said to have substituted the President’s approval for the majority of the names on appointment lists since Tinubu took office.

A trustworthy source stated that one such instance saw the Ekiti REC’s identity being changed to that of a former commissioner serving under the governor of Ekiti state at the time, Kayode Fayemi.

“The man was Fayemi’s former commissioner, and that was not the person Asiwaju signed off on,” the insider added of the REC from Ekiti that Gbajabiamila placed there. One Toyin (Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola), the former INEC legal adviser, was the person Asiwaju approved.

Two members of the President’s cabinet met with him after the announcement was made, expressing their dissatisfaction that their nominee had been replaced with someone else. The President claimed that before signing the list, he looked up the woman’s name out of rage.

When his CoS showed there, he was stuttering, despite having called for him. The President requested that he bring the signed list.

“The President stated that whatever he signs will be altered, and he has been informed that this is accurate. The President cited three instances where he signed a document only to have it modified. With regret, he sent him one final warning. He gave the order that the woman’s name needed to be on the list.

There was a strategy in place to gradually get Gbajabiamila out of the Villa, the person continued.

The President is being embarrassed by the CoS for what feels like the fifth time. Giving him an ambassadorial role is part of the strategy to gradually remove him from Villa, the person said.

Another report mentioned that a portion of the CoS’s duties was already being performed by President’s Private Principal Secretary, PPS, Akeem Okunola.

Furthermore, word has it that the President has already assembled a team to assist the CoS.

“The National Social Investments Programme (NSIP) issue too, that wasn’t the person Asiwaju recommended for the position,” the insider emphasized. The person Asiwaju suggested was Halima Sheu. Because Sheu was running for office, Sadiya Farouq, the recently retired Minister of Finance, fired her. After her dismissal, Asiwaju pledged to put her back in the same role or one that was more senior.

However, the CoS again marketed the role. Before Halima Sheu returned to NSIP, they had to fight it again. Because of the overwhelming shame, Asiwaju is assembling a team from outside CoS to assist him with the system. Akeem Okunola, the PPS, has begun working on some of his tasks.

AFDB has $4.4 billion in investments in Nigeria – DG

0

With a total commitment value of $4.4 billion, the African Development Bank’s portfolio investments in Nigeria rank among the greatest among the Regional Member Countries, according to Mr. Lamin Barrow, Director-General of the Nigerian Country Department.

At the 2023 Country Portfolio Performance Review Workshop in Abuja, he made this statement.

However, this performance is lower than the $5 billion in portfolio value in 63 operations that was noted in 2022.

Reiterating the bank’s commitment to encourage investments in the nation, Barrow stated that 48 distinct fundings were split equally between the nation’s public and private sector operations.

“With a total commitment value of $4.4bn, the bank’s portfolio in Nigeria is currently among the largest among the Regional Member Countries,” he stated. These consisted of 48 operations that were split pretty evenly between those in the public and private sectors.

Barrow added that from 36% in January 2023 to 32% in September 2023, the percentage of flagged operations has dropped.

He said the bank could achieve 100% compliance by closely monitoring the procurement plans and implementation procedures.

“We are happy that the percentage of start-up delays has decreased from 32% of flagged operations in June 2023 to 28% in October 2023. With timely and focused actions for certain projects, we anticipate that this percentage will reach 8% by the end of 2023,” he stated.

Additionally, a few of our measures for portfolio performance have improved. Specifically, the percentage of operations that were marked for implementation issues dropped from 36% in January 2023 to 32% in September 2023.

Tinubu congratulates Oba of Lagos on his 80th birthday

President Bola Tinubu has lauded the characteristics of Oba Rilwan Akiolu, the Oba of Lagos, on his 80th birthday today, October 28, 2023.

Tinubu commended the traditional ruler in a statement issued on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, and made available.

He went on to say that the monarch was instrumental in his achievement as governor of Lagos State.

“Oba Akiolu and I have come a long way,” the statement begins. He is a confidant of mine. He is a great buddy I hold in high regard for his honesty, integrity, and forthrightness. He is usually generous with his knowledgeable advice and eager to share his fatherly advice.
