The Nigerian Army has reported that three terrorists were successfully neutralized during clearance operations near the villages of Maidaro, Ngade, Ahla, and Rikau in the state’s Birnin Gwari Local Government Area.

Lt.-Col Musa Yahaya, spokesman for the 1st Division of the Nigerian Army in Kaduna, stated on Monday that the terrorists attempted to flee when they saw the troops, but two of them were killed and the others managed to escape with gunshot wounds.

During the operation, the troops recovered an AK47 rifle, and the criminals abandoned a motorcycle.
In another operation, the troops conducted an operation in the Tantatu and Antena areas within Chikun Local Government Area of the state. They successfully neutralized one terrorist and recovered one AK-47 rifle, one AK-47 magazine, seven 7.62mm (Special) ammunition, and two mobile phones.
Maj-Gen. Valentine Okoro, General Officer Commanding 1st Division, Nigerian Army, and Force Commander of “Operation Whirl Punch,” praised the troops for their efforts and urged them to maintain their high level of performance until all terrorists and criminals within the Division’s area of responsibility were completely eradicated.

He also urged the people of Kaduna State to continue providing credible and actionable intelligence reports to the army and other security agencies.

Mr Ola Olukoyede, Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has urged heads of tertiary institutions across the country to counsel their students against internet fraud.

He made the appeal on Monday at the commission’s Zonal Command Office in Ilorin during an interactive session with Kogi tertiary institution heads.

Olukoyede, who was represented by the Ilorin Zonal Commander, Mr Michael Nzekwe, urged tertiary institutions to work with the commission to combat the rising tide of internet fraud among students.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the engagement is a follow-up to a meeting held earlier on May 4, as part of the command’s proactive measures to combat cybercrime in Kwara.

He advised tertiary institution administrators to put in place measures to discourage students from engaging in criminal activity.

“Parents should also be more committed to their children’s moral upbringing, both in school and at home, to support the prevention agenda.”

“The commission can achieve the task of ridding the country of corruption if every institution gets involved and actively participate in the fight against the menace,” the chairman said.

He also charged educational institutions with changing the negative narratives about education quality in Nigeria.
According to him, a corruption-free Nigeria is possible if everyone gets involved in the fight against corruption proactively and sincerely.

Prof. Salawu Sadiku, Vice Chancellor of Confluence University of Science and Technology, Osara, responded by applauding the EFCC initiative.

Sadiku urged the commission to include anti-corruption courses in the school curriculum and to teach them at all levels.

“Today’s youth are exposed to a number of vices that have the potential to permanently ruin their lives.”

“We need to do more for students to focus on their studies and desist from all forms of cybercrimes,” he told the audience.

Similarly, Dr Salisu Usman, Rector of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, and Dr Umar Hassan, Provost of College of Education, Okene, stressed the importance of instituting anti-corruption watchdogs to combat cybercrime on campuses.

Dr Yahaya Usman, Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Idah, and Mrs Victoria Jagboro, Provost of College of Education (Technical), Kabba, urged the EFCC to strengthen its intelligence gathering mechanisms and guidance and counselling efforts.

Some northern Nigerian youths have urged President Bola Tinubu not to make skewed appointments like his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari.

Under the auspices of the Northern Youth Leaders Forum (NYLF), the youths acknowledged that northerners have no right to complain about Tinubu’s perceived ‘lopsided’ appointments, but expressed their belief that the country should not continue in the same manner.

Some northern leaders have accused President Tinubu of favoring the south in his appointees. For example, Ahmad Gumi, an Islamic cleric, claimed that Tinubu appointed more Southern Christians to key positions while ignoring northerners who, he claimed, helped him gain power.
Elliot Afiyo, National President of the NYLF, told the press in Abeokuta, Ogun State’s capital, on Sunday that Tinubu is widening the gap of alleged lopsided appointments inherited from Buhari.

According to Afiyo, Buhari created an appointment gap of 80% for the north and 20% for the south from 2015 to 2023.

He urged Tinubu, however, not to follow Buhari’s lead in selecting appointees, “because the country must not continue in error.”
