Peter Obi, Labour Party’s presidential candidate, gave N20m to Enugu Hospital

0

In order to establish a College of Nursing Sciences at the Faith Foundation Mission Hospital in Enugu State, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, gave N20 million.

On Monday, November 13, the former governor of Anambra State disclosed this in a post on his X account.

He claims that the measure is consistent with his pledge to fund vital sectors of the country’s growth, including as poverty eradication, health, and education.

“I visited Nsukka in Enugu State over the weekend, where I donated N20 million to the Faith Foundation Mission Hospital, Nsukka,” the caption for the photo stated. This is consistent with my ongoing pledge to fund the three most important sectors of national development—health, education, and the eradication of poverty.

“Through the Anglican Bishop of Nsukka, Rt Rev. Aloysius Agbo, I am providing the hospital with my first support through this donation to enable them to start construction on a College of Nursing Sciences.”

“Primary healthcare delivery, the cornerstone of any reputable healthcare system, revolves around healthcare professionals.

As a result, we need to give healthcare worker training more serious consideration, particularly in light of the fact that both our beloved country and the rest of the world are experiencing a shortage of these specialists.

“I applaud the Bishop for taking the risk to establish a College of Nursing Sciences, as well as his whole staff at Faith Foundation Hospital.

“I will continue to support projects that will bring development to our nation and be beneficial to Nigerians, for in so doing, we will be able to build the New Nigeria of our dreams.”

Abuja property owners should prepare to begin paying property taxes, says Nyesom Wike

0

The Federal Capital Territory’s Minister, Nyesom Wike, has approved a draft property tax code for Abuja, so property owners should prepare to begin paying taxes on their properties.

As required by the Capital Gains Tax Act of 2004, it was learned that the FCT’s Internal Revenue Service has started enforcing the capital gains tax in Abuja.

A person who disposes of chargeable assets in a year of assessment may be subject to a 10 percent capital gains tax (CGT) on the entire amount of chargeable profits (after deducting permitted expenses from the computation of such gains).

In addition, the revenue service of the capital city was able to increase its Internally Generated Revenue to around N140 billion, according to Haruna Abdullahi, Executive Chairman of FCT-IRS, who made this revelation to journalists in Abuja on Sunday.

Speaking on the steps the agency was taking to increase revenue for the Federal Capital Territory, Abdullahi stated the minister had given his approval to a number of important projects that would help them do so.

“In the last three weeks, the minister has approved some huge initiatives that will undoubtedly change the dynamics in terms of the bottom line,” the man stated. We just presented a draft proposal for the FCT property tax regulation to the minister.

“The Minister may create a property tax law for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) under the FCT-IRS Act. We recommended it to the minister after a lengthy discussion, and he asked us to develop a regulation, which we did, and he approved the idea.

The FCT-IRS completed the draft, but that is insufficient; more stakeholders are required, so we are reviewing it as part of an interagency partnership. Thus, he granted permission for the initiative to proceed with the draft review and return later.

He will then sign the regulation when it has been gazetted and put into effect at the end of the day. Thus, that alone ought to demonstrate to you that the city’s IGR is greatly impacted in a positive way.

He emphasized that the minister’s approval of the full application of the capital gains tax in Abuja will also help the Federal Capital Territory meet its income projections.

Furthermore, we just established a new committee to oversee the application of the Capital Gains Tax law. There used to be relatively little capital gains tax paid because people would just go out and pay on their own volition.

“However, now that the minister has been informed and has given his approval for the interagency cooperation, we will start implementing the capital gains tax in its entirety.

According to Abdullahi, “you can envision an FCT with a property tax and a fully implemented capital gains tax. Then, about a month ago, there was a circular where the minister approved the implementation of Section 31 of the FCT IRS Act and Section 85 of the Personal Income Tax Act.”

According to the head of FCT-IRS, “in my first meeting I told the staff that we cannot do much if we do not implement Section 85, but it is a huge section that needs political support.” This was two years ago. And the minister showed up, of course, and approved of it.

“What that means is that all of us must have a tax clearance certificate,” he said, elaborating on the enormous significance of this. In addition to filing your returns, you need to obtain a tax clearing certificate.

“Building permits are not available because the development control unit requires proof of tax payment and TCC, both of which can be verified by the relevant tax authorities, before granting the permit.”

The implementation of Sections 85 of the Personal Income Tax and 31 of the FCT-IRS Act 2015, the implementation of the Capital Gains Tax, and now the Property Tax regulation, according to Abdullahi, “should take us to certainly above 50 to 60 percent of what we are doing at the moment.” And the bottom line will benefit greatly from that.

Regarding whether the agency was having trouble collecting taxes in the city, Abdullahi said that these were political problems since the agency needed the minister’s political will to go through many obstacles.

This is the reason I bring up the fact that the minister has eased the load by providing us with the necessary political backing. General operational problems and a lack of knowledge regarding what really occurs and what is intended to occur are the other two.

“When you take into account the kind of letters we receive here, we face significant challenges from many stakeholders.” We make every effort to address them, though.

“But now that the minister has shown that revenue-related concerns are important to him, all city stakeholders can see that there is political will and that the administration is taking the right direction, so they won’t play around with it,” he said.

LP, PDP kick as Uzodimma, Ododo win, protests in Bayelsa

0

The Independent National Electoral Commission announced on Sunday that Governor Hope Uzodimma, the All Progressives Congress candidate, had won the governorship election in Imo State on Saturday. The Peoples Democratic Party and the Labour Party immediately protested this decision.

Uzodimma’s reelection was confirmed by the electoral board since she had won in each of the state’s 27 local government districts.

With 540,008 votes, the governor secured a second term in office, according to the commission.

With 446,237 votes, APC candidate in Kogi, Usman Ododo, was proclaimed the victor of the poll.

The state Returning Officer, Prof. Johnson Urama, revealed the results late on Sunday night. He reported that Ododo received 259,052 votes, closely followed by Social Democratic Party candidate Muri Ajaka.

Adejo Okeme of the LP received 567 votes, Dino Melaye of the PDP 46,362; and Leke Bejide of the African Democratic Party 21,891.

There were 1,932,474 registered voters overall, and 794,500 recognized voters.

Of the 791,890 votes cast, the commission reported that 9,601 were rejected.

The results from the Brass and Southern Ijaw local government areas of Bayelsa State would be made public on Monday, according to the INEC (today).

The results collation process would continue today, according to a statement sent on Sunday to state party agents, election observers, and media by Mr. Wilfred Ifogah, Head of Department, Voter Education and Publicity, INEC office, Yenagoa.

The Imo State Returning Officer for the election, Prof. Abayomi Fasina, who is the vice-chancellor of the University of Oye in Ekiti State, announced Uzodimma’s victory by revealing that the Labour Party’s Athan Aconu received 64, 081 votes, while PDP candidate Samuel Anyanwu received 71, 503 votes.

Following the announcement, the PDP and LP demanded an entire cancellation of the polls.

They claimed that INEC employees and security personnel colluded to enable APC members to rig the election.

Speaking to reporters during a press conference, Anyanwu said that INEC and the security forces had failed to fulfill their constitutional duty to provide the state’s citizens with a credible election. He also demanded the annulment of the results.

Rather, he said that the security officers shielded INEC employees “while the APC members rewrote results.”

Anyanwu declared that the PDP and he would only accept the complete cancellation of the election.

LP Candudate

Achonu, the LP candidate, promised to appeal to the election tribunal.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday at his country home in Umulomo, in the state’s Ehime Mbano Local Government Area, he said that the election was “deserving of outright cancellation because of irregularities, including vote-buying and physical assaults of LP agents.”

In addition, he said that, in contrast to INEC’s pre-election promises, voting took place in numerous places without the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System accreditation.

Together with accusing the security staff of collusion, Achonu said that there was “plenty of documented proof, including the example of a police officer who voters defeated for trying to steal a ballot box.”

He congratulated the LP supporters for their courage in the face of intimidation and gave them confidence that the legal system would provide justice.

“Under the full scrutiny of security personnel, whose salaries we pay from our commonwealth, our democracy was raped,” he declared.

Collation was abruptly relocated from the ward to the LG centers, with the exception of APC agents who were denied entry and other party agents being kept out.

“And to all of you, my supporters: I am proud of you all and I want to thank you for your perseverance and steadfastness. You all battled so hard.

“We will regain our mandate, and I have not given up on the judiciary; there are so many men of integrity there.”

He demanded that those who mistreated Mr. Callistus Ihejiagwa, the state chairman of the LP, be arrested right once and denounced the attack and detention of the guy.

A widely shared video shows that my party chairman was assaulted at the collation center. Furthermore, the police detained and arrested him rather than arresting the people who had beaten him.

“Let’s prevent our nation and its democracy from descending into anarchy. We demand that the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, annul the alleged results because there was no election yesterday, Achonu added.

Additionally, Tony Nwulu, the LP’s deputy governorship candidate, said that the security personnel had protected APC members and INEC employees in order to thwart the state’s popular will.

He asserted, in a Saturday night interview with media, that voting papers had been sent to every LG secretariat “where rewriting of the election results was allegedly ongoing.”

Nwulu asserted, “Imo State did not hold an election on Saturday.” The electoral materials were diverted to the residences of the populace and the headquarters of the LGA council. The actors were protected throughout by the army, police, and DSS.

“The Imo people rejected them when they showed up at the polling places with enormous sums of money to buy votes. They have now turned to stealing voting materials and transferring them to people’s houses and the LG headquarters, where they are presently manipulating the results.

“In all of these shameful activities, the APC members and INEC employees are being protected by the police, army, and DSS. All the records are with us. We are alerting Nigerians to the fact that Imo state did not hold an election on Saturday.

“Our party’s position, as well as that of my principal, Senator Athan Achonu, the party’s candidate for Imo State governorship, is that this sham of an election should be called off completely.”

Uzodimma’s triumph

Callistus Ihejiagwa, the state’s LP chairman, stated that the election procedure that resulted in the governor’s victory needed to be changed and was riddled with anomalies.

He said that Achonu had won the election based on the real results, calling the poll “a daylight robbery and a rape of democracy.”

In Orsu, Orlu, Ideato North, Okigwe, Oguta, and Owerri municipal elections, according to the LP chair, “yet INEC in collaboration with APC and security agents wrote the results.”

In addition, he criticized the returning officer for not responding to his plea before tallying the votes and declaring Uzodimma the victor.

“What happened in Imo state on Saturday was a sham,” declared Ihejiagwa. The way the security personnel shielded APC members and INEC employees so they could rig the election was disgusting.

“Our records show that Senator Athan Achonu, our candidate, prevailed in the election. We want to contest in court Hope Uzodimma’s declaration as the election victor. Our candidate and the Labour Party won’t remain silent if someone doesn’t. The election went to us. In court, we will reclaim our mandate.

Governor Uzodimma, soaring with triumph, called on his rivals to stand with him in advancing the state.

Speaking on Sunday in Owerri, the state capital, just after being named the poll’s winner, Uzodimma predicted that the state will greatly profit from his next four years in power.

The state’s citizens, security personnel, and INEC employees were all thanked by the governor for helping to guarantee a peaceful election in the state.

He expressly thanked President Bola Tinubu for endorsing his candidacy for reelection.

“I am humbled and honored by your overwhelming support in yesterday’s election,” Uzodimma declared. It inspires and greatly pleases me that you have faith in me to continue leading our beloved State.

We have won handily together, and I’m determined to keep my end of the bargain.
You can be confident that your interests will continue to be the top priority of my administration as we move forward toward the Next Level of Shared Prosperity.

“I reach out to my fellow candidates from other parties, inviting them to work with me to develop and improve our one and only dear State. We shall run our administration inclusively, putting the interests of people ahead of political divisions.

A female youth corps member who worked in Mbaitolu LG as an ad hoc worker was reported missing, and the BVAS and results that were in her possession had not been found.

The local government collation officer, Dr. Bolaji Olaleye, stated during the presentation of his findings that the youth corps member did not answer calls, fueling concerns that something horrible might have happened to her.

“We couldn’t locate the BVAS and results sheet in her possession, which led to the cancellation of the election in ward three polling units,” Olaleye said, adding that she wasn’t sure what had happened to the female corps member.

However, the SDP branch in Kogi State demanded that the results in the LGs of Okene, Okehi, Ogori Magongo, Adavi, and Ajaokuta be canceled, citing allegations of vote-buying, corrupt practices, and excessive voting.

David Edibu, the party’s collation agent, presented a petition to Prof. Johnson Urame, the State Returning Officer, who promised to review it.

In agreement with Edibu, Abubakar Mahmood, the PDP agent stationed at the collation center, stated that the number of malpractice cases in the aforementioned LGA was concerning.

In a same vein, Kogi State’s PDP standard bearer, Dino Melaye, has urged the electoral commission to call off the state’s off-cycle poll.

Speaking at a press conference in the state capital of Lokoja on Sunday, Melaye claimed that result sheets had been tampered with prior to the start of voter accreditation on Saturday.

“The five local governments in Kogi State’s central senatorial district did not hold elections yesterday. Surprisingly, accreditation was ultimately completed manually without the assistance of the BVAS, according to Melaye.

The APC, on the other hand, has urged INEC to uphold the integrity of the state’s voting process rather than giving in to demands for the poll to be called off.

The APC’s candidate, Ododo, is already “coasting to a spectacular victory,” according to Felix Morka, the publicity secretary for the party.

According to a statement released by Morka on Sunday, Ododo is “maintaining a landslide lead in Kogi West and Central, with a competitive showing in Kogi East” based on the results that have been released and uploaded thus far.

APC alerts

We are well aware of the tremendous pressure that trailing opposition party agents and supporters have been putting on INEC employees, including violent threats, with the intention of improperly influencing or interfering with the state’s ongoing results collation process.

The party spokesman issued a statement saying, “We urge INEC to stand fast in the discharge of its constitutional duty to deliver free, fair, and credible elections in the state and ensure that the freely exercised will of the Kogi electorate prevails.”

Hundreds of Bayelsa PDP supporters demonstrated on Sunday in Yenagoa, the state capital, demanding that the election results from Nembe-Bassambiri, Nembe LG, not be taken to the collation center.

According to the results, Governor Douye Diri of the PDP received 137, 909 votes, Timipre Sylva of the APC received 73, 503, and Udengs Eradiri of the LP received 703.

To protest the polls in the APC strongholds, especially the Nembe LG, where Sylva received 22,248 votes, PDP supporters, however, invaded the INEC headquarters.

However, Dennis Otioto, an APC agent at the Yenagoa collation center, defended the party’s win, pointing out that Sylva’s agents, Ofoni and Kolokuma/Opokuma, were driven out.

The PDP supporters claimed that the results from the voting places in the area were manipulated and that the election did not actually occur in Nembe-Bassambiri.

Security personnel stopped the demonstrators as they marched toward the INEC office on Swali Road.

Around 9:30 am, they had gathered at the Isaac Boro Peace Park in Ovom on the Mbiama-Yenagoa Road. From there, they marched up the Swali Market Road to the INEC Office gate.

However, as the demonstrators advanced from Lambert Eradiri Road to Swali Road and passed the roundabout that connected Mgbi Road, a number of armed security personnel set up a roadblock on the route and prevented the demonstrators from approaching the intersection that led to the INEC office entrance.

The security personnel took up strategic positions surrounding the area and blocked the road with armored personnel carriers and multiple security patrol vans.

The state commissioner for education, Gentle Emelah, said in a press conference that the demonstration was started because it was unacceptable that PDP voters in Nembe-Bassambiri who were entitled to vote were not given the opportunity to cast ballots.

Insisting that voting did not take place in the community, he urged INEC and State Resident Electoral Commissioner Obo Effanga to reject the Nembe-Bassambiri results.

“We are here to tell the world that election is not violence,” Emelah declared. A crucial responsibility is election. Each and every person with the right to vote should do so.

However, what is taking place in Nembe-Bassambiri is unacceptable since you cannot deny qualified people their right to vote and force INEC to carry out your request. Every adult who is of voting age should have equal access to the voting process.

“We are aware that Nembe-Bassambiri did not have an election. We are speaking with INEC to get that result discarded as a result. And if possible, allow them to look at the Bassambiri case again and guarantee that everyone is able to cast a ballot.

Speaking as well, Diriyai Dambo, SAN, the state attorney general and commissioner for justice, called the Nembe-Bassambiri affair “a rape of democracy.”

He asserted that party members who were traveling to Nembe in advance of the governorship election on November 10 were put in a potentially fatal circumstance.

Dambo claimed that phony results were created and shared on social media, and that voting was not done in Nembe-Bassambiri, especially in constituencies 2 and 9.

“There will be a massive rape of democracy if what we are here for is allowed to continue,” Nembe native Dambo declared. We came here because, in my hometown of Nembe-Bassambiri, we were denied the right to vote. Specifically, on November 10th, the majority of our folks traveled to Nembe in 58 busses, leaving Yenagoa behind with escorts.

“The SWAT Team and other APC-acclaimed teenagers were obstructing the entrance to Nembe when we arrived. They advised us to descend so they could search us. Kile, one of our boys, went down, and they started beating him up. He made his getaway by sly means.

They began threatening us after that, even going so far as to hurl tear gas at us. They told us we couldn’t enter, and most of them had to leave because they were afraid for their lives.

A concerning issue is that a few INEC officials are being kept captive in the Brass LG.

The INEC urged the police and other security personnel to look into the matter and help with the officials’ release in a post on its X handle on Sunday.

“The unfolding situation in Brass Local Government Area,” was the post’s headline. The Commission is keeping a careful eye on the hostage situation involving our officials in Brass LG, Bayelsa State.

“This undermines the legitimacy of elections. We demand that the security services help to free them right now.

According to reports, a guy named George Sibo passed away on Sunday afternoon in Twon-Brass, the Brass LG’s headquarters, following an attack by a crowd thought to be made up of APC supporters.

It was discovered that the deceased, a member of the PDP, was attacked at the council area headquarters during the compilation of results from a few wards in Constituency 2 for the governorship election.

Sibo, also known as “Kobo-Kobo,” was reportedly a Twon-Brass native and a political assistant to a local official.

Daniel Charles, a representative for Brass Constituency 1 in the Louisiana House of Assembly, denounced the man’s horrific murder.

He asked security personnel to apprehend and charge the individuals responsible for the heinous deed right away.

Asinim Butswat, the police public relations officer, stated that he was waiting on the area commander in Brass LGA to provide him with the incident’s specifics.

Nigerians make unjust demands on lawmakers – Godswill Akpabio

0

Godswill Akpabio, the president of the Senate, claims that among the three arms of government, lawmakers are the ones that Nigerians misunderstand and criticize the most.

He claims that Nigerians hold parliamentarians accountable for everything, even for circumstances that are beyond of their immediate control.

This was said on Sunday during the 100th birthday colloquium of Second Republic politician Senator Kunle Oyero, which was hosted by the Abeokuta Grammar School Old Boys Association in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The senator was represented by Senator Shuaib Salisu, a senator from Ogun Central.

According to Akpabio, the legislature is the one branch of government that the public doesn’t truly comprehend and that is frequently mocked and attacked. In actuality, there are instances when people believe lawmakers do nothing at all.

The issue is that the electorate’s metric for evaluating lawmakers’ performance differs from what is taught in the curriculum. According to the syllabus, a legislator’s three main responsibilities are to enact laws, carry out oversight duties, and make appropriations.

“However, the number of transformers and other tangible gifts that legislators give to the constituents they represent is the yardstick by which legislators are judged, so any senator who limits himself to that will not receive a return ticket, not even from his party.”

On the other hand, AGSOBA’s Global President, Sunday Oduntan, argued in favor of part-time employment for parliamentarians.

“No one ought to bear the guilt for anything. Our main issue is the way we operate and the way things are structured. Having decent rules is one thing, but putting them into practice is quite another, and I believe that’s where the issue lies. He continued, “The political landscape might be much better.

Stay out of Liberian poll Jega cautions ECOWAS Observers

0

Prof. Attahiru Jega, a former head of the Independent National Electoral Commission and the head of the Economic Community of West African States Observers Mission in Liberia, has urged political players and stakeholders to follow the law and fair play when participating in Tuesday, November 14th,’s presidential run-off in Liberia.

He also counseled onlookers not to tamper with the proceedings.

“On Friday, November 10, 2023, Prof Jega met successively with the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Liberia, Mr. Frank Musa Dean Jr.; President of the National Electoral Commission, Mrs. Davidetta Browne-Lansanah; some civil society actors and the ECOWAS Technical Team,” according to a statement released by the ECOWAS mission on Sunday.

“Jega discussed the challenges for a peaceful, free, transparent, and credible electoral process as well as election preparation in his meetings with these actors.”

The former chair of INEC met with a number of high-ranking officials from ECOWAS, according to the statement.

Jega was cited as pleading with the ECOWAS observers to “perform their tasks within the confines of the extant electoral legal frameworks and in accordance with international standards” during her speech.

In addition, he pleaded with them to utilize the knowledge and resources they had received throughout their training rather than meddling in the election process. He then requested that they offer any suggestions they may have for enhancing both the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission and the voting process.

According to the statement, the observers were briefed on the circumstances surrounding “the polls” by Josephine Nkrumah, the ECOWAS Resident Representative in Liberia.

The ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security, Abdel-Fatau Musah, expressed his satisfaction with the observers’ profile but tasked them with maintaining objectivity while observing the exercise.

Govs polls: Uzodimma, Diri in early lead, Ododo, Ajaka fight for Kogi

0

After Saturday’s governorship elections in Imo, Kogi and Bayelsa states, signs emerged that governors Douye Diri of Bayelsa State and Hope Uzodimma of Imo State were in early lead, as compilation of results advanced.

In Bayelsa State, Diri, who is seeking re-election, is the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, while Uzodimma, also seeking re-election, is the candidate of the All Progressives Congress.

However, in Kogi State, our correspondents who covered the poll and observed the compilation of results, which was underway as of press time, gathered that it was a tight contest between Usman Ododo of the APC and Muri Ajaka of the Social Democratic Party. The candidate of the PDP, Dino Melaye, is also a serious contender in the contest.

across addition to our correspondents’ findings across the states, the compilation of some of the results released on the INEC Result Viewing portal highlighted the early performance of the parties.

In Bayelsa State, for example, the computation of votes in 131 random polling units across some local government areas showed that PDP’s Diri already garnered 13, 396 votes, while his closest challenger, APC’s Timipre Sylva, garnered 4,802 votes.

In Imo State, the computation done by our correspondents in 90 polling units, which cuts across different local government areas, showed that APC’s Uzodinma polled 22,113 votes, while the candidate of the PDP, Samuel Anyanwu, and that of the Labour Party, Senator Athan Achonu, garnered 1,452 and 1,658 votes respectively.

In Kogi State, where the exercise is believed to be a three horse race, the calculation done by some of our correspondents across 149 polling units scattered across five local government areas showed that APC’s Adodo scored 21,047 votes, followed by SDP’s Ajaka, with 7,324 votes and PDP’s Melaye with 2,529 votes. Meanwhile, Ajaka was revealed to have polled large votes in Kogi East senatorial district, where he came from.

As of 11:03pm, the IReV portal indicated that in Bayelsa State, 85.29 per cent of the results had been uploaded, as 1,914 polling unit results had been uploaded out of the 2,242 total polling units.

For Imo State, as of 11:18pm, the portal indicated that out of the 4,758 total polling units, 4,287 polling units had been uploaded, representing 90.1 per cent.

For Kogi State, as of 11:20pm, the portal revealed that out of 3,508 polling units, 3,064 polling units had been uploaded, indicating 87.34 per cent.

Violence, vote-buying mar polls

Meanwhile, the elections were characterized by vote-buying, poor voter turnout and pockets of violence, including killing of a person in Imo State. There were also results of intimidation of voters and stealing of voting materials.

One slain in Imo

The poll in Imo State was marred by vote-buying, low voter turnout, intimidation of voters and snatching of electoral materials.

A man identified simply as Chidi but well known as General was also shot dead on Saturday evening at Amanwozuzu in the Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State.

An eyewitness, who begged anonymity, told our correspondent, “A man known as Chidi but popularly called General was shot dead this (Saturday) evening in the Amanwozuzu area of Iho in the Ikeduru LG.

“After killing him, they took away his bag. He was shot killed by men in uniform. He was from Umuomumu Mbieri in the Mbaitoli LG of the state. His corpse has been evacuated by some policemen.”

An further community source verified the murder, stating that the victim was charged with stealing voting materials.

In different spots around the state, people were spotted walking about without voting. Youths were seen in some places playing football on tarred roads, while intimidation and suppression of votes were also noticed in certain localities.

Electoral materials were seized in places like Orsu, Okigwe, Ideato North and South, Oguta and were misdirected to people’s homes.

Our correspondents also saw party agents buying votes. At the Owerri municipal council, for example, votes were bought for between N2,000 and N3,000. Part agents were observed bribing voters N3,000 at Poling Units 007 and 008 at Adult Education Owerri Municipal.

Also at St Paul’s Primary School Polling Units in Owerri Municipal, some voters won N2,000 each after voting. At Umuodu Community Primary School in Ihihitte-Mbieri ward in the Mabitoli LG, votes were also bought for N2,000.

A Labour Party chieftain, Kingsley Madu, alleged voters were intimidated and that vote-buying was prevalent.

The LP’s Tony Nwulu, the deputy governorship candidate, asserted that his party was leading by a significant margin prior to APC members allegedly moving around in thugs, stealing voting materials, discouraging voters, and purchasing ballots.

But the APC spokesperson in the state, Cajetan Duke, rejected the claim, claiming his party didn’t indulge in any electoral irregularities.

Also, tension was high at the Orji Town Primary School in Owerri North when vote-buying by party agents nearly ruined polling at the centre, which houses units 005, 006 and 007. The exercise was quiet but for periodic disagreement amongst party operatives who seemed hell-bent on persuading voters with cash.

One of the voters, who acknowledged that he got N3,000, said he still voted for the candidate of his choice despite accepting the money. “I took their money and still voted for the candidate of my choice,” the voter stated.

Brutality in Bayelsa

In Bayelsa State, the election was also characterized by violence, intimidation and seizure of ballot boxes in several of the local government areas. The exercise also recorded inadequate attendance of voters across various polling units in Yenagoa, Kolokuma/Opokuma, Ekeremor, Nembe, Brass, Southern Ijaw, Sagbama and Ogbia LGs.

In Southern Ijaw LG, for instance, armed thugs reportedly assaulted Olodiama and Ologbobiri communities and chased away voters and election staff at polling locations, while voting materials were also hijacked.

A similar occurrence also occurred at Biseni in Yenagoa, Sagbama, Nembe and Brass LGs.

Sunday PUNCH also learnt that there a conflict among the supporters of the governing PDP and the major opposition APC at Famgbe allegedly led to the death of an unnamed individual while some others were hurt.

Early in the day, members of both camps allegedly tried to seize control of the accreditation and voting procedures, resulting in sporadic gunshots.

A citizen who wished to remain anonymous stated, “One person was shot dead in the Famgbe community and accreditation has not started.” This is a really tense scenario. To frighten their supporters on opposing sides, the APC and PDP thugs opened fire. Each side is placing the blame for the violence that occurred on the other.

Additionally, it was alleged that armed thugs broke into voting places in the community of Agorogbene in Sagbama LG and stole ballot boxes as residents fled for their lives.

In the meantime, allegations of vote-buying were traded between the state’s PDP and LP. Udengs Eradiri, the LP’s candidate for the state’s governorship, claimed that Diri, the PDP candidate, was buying votes with cash.

However, Sinkumo Ekisah, the state commissioner for special duties, quickly refuted the allegation, calling it a false alarm.

Imo does likewise

In Imo State, there have also been reports of poor voter turnout.

Samuel Anyanwu, the PDP candidate, claimed that the tardiness of the electoral materials’ arrival would not impact his chances as he cast his ballot at the Central Primary School in Ikeduru at approximately 10.40 a.m.

However, the late arrival of materials and voter indifference in Orji, Owerri North and Ikeduru and Amaimo local government areas led to late commencement of voting.
When one of our correspondents came at Unit 17, along Orji Road at about 8.35am, polling workers had yet to arrive as a few voters, who turned out to vote, waited to vote. But by 9.30 a.m., tables were set up as election officials arrived to get to work. No police officer was also at the polling unit at the time.

Not spared is Kogi

There was low voter turnout in other areas of Kogi State as well. In Lokoja LG, it was noted in Polling Unit 073 adjacent Kenwon Hotel that despite an expected 314 voters, there were just 65 voters when our correspondent visited.

Also, behind a tree beside Jane Palace Hotel, Moremi Area, a Polling Unit having 477 voters, just a few folks were visible in the queue.

One of our sources also learnt that there was vote-buying close to Kenwon Hotel Polling Unit 073, as money was offered to some electorate after voting.

Few voters showed up to cast ballots at Polling Unit 058 at the Federal Medical Center intersection in Lokoja, despite an anticipated 523 voters. A few voters received N3,000 for casting their ballots.

Nonetheless, Sunday PUNCH noted that in the voting places they visited, the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System performed admirably.

INEC official released

On Saturday, the Bayelsa State-based Supervisory Presiding Officer of INEC who had been abducted was liberated. At the Amassoma jetty in the Southern Ijaw LG, he was abducted on Friday.

The official was doing well, according to a statement released on Saturday by Wilfred Ifogah, Head of Department, Voter Education and Publicity, INEC, Bayelsa State.

Ifogah stated, “The Independent National Electoral Commission, Bayelsa State Office, is pleased to inform stakeholders and concerned citizens in Nigeria that the INEC SPO earlier abducted on the eve of the election has been freed and is doing fine.

The kidnapping of the SPO was reported by Ifogah in a statement on Friday. He also claimed that a boat bringing electoral officers to Registration Area 17 (Koluama) in Southern Ijaw LG capsized. “Fortunately, no life was lost as all the election personnel, numbering 12, and the boat operator were rescued,” he stated.

He mentioned that investigations were underway into the result sheets, power banks, and bags that included the personal belongings of the staff members lost in the incident.

Poll suspended in Kogi wards

INEC on Saturday announced the suspension of election in nine wards in the Ogori/Magongo Local Government Area of Kogi State. The reason given was electoral malpractice, including the instance of result sheets being completed prior to voting.

This was disclosed in a statement released on Saturday and signed by Mohammed Haruna, the National Commissioner and Member of the Information and Voter Education Committee.

“Our officials in Kogi State submitted reports to the commission regarding instances of electoral malpractice, specifically the matter of result sheets being filled out prior to voting,” he said. According to reports, the occurrences happened in the LGs of Adavi, Ajaokuta, Ogori/Magongo, Okehi, and Okene. Ogori/Magongo was the scene of the most serious occurrences, involving nine out of ten Registration Areas.

“This is entirely unacceptable. Any outcome that does not come from the Polling Unit process conducted by the commission will not be accepted. The commission is resolved not to reward poor behaviour. Consequently, the election in the nine wards in Ogori/Magongo LGA (Eni, Okibo, Okesi, Ileteju, Aiyeromi, Ugugu, Obinoyin, Obatgben and Oturu) is at this moment halted.

“The events in the other local government areas are the subject of in-depth investigations, and within the next 24 hours, the results and next steps will be made public.”

He declared that in order to find out who might have been involved in undermining the process, the panel will audit personnel and documents. “We have a record of every official assigned to a polling location, including supervisors, monitors, technical workers, and officials at different levels, together with all the election materials that were sent to them. Where necessary, appropriate consequences will be implemented, he continued.

Sylva, LP candidate kick

Shortly after voting in his polling unit, Ward 4, the APC candidate for Bayelsa State took questions from the media and accused INEC of making “a careless mistake” by failing to upload the voter registration.

He said that his camp informed INEC’s national leadership of the issue. He nonetheless applauded the commission for improving on the conduct of the polls, saying that there was room for improvement.

“In some cases, our people think that we are running against security, not against PDP,” he continued. But at the end of the day, we will come out victorious.

“I have been told that in Yenagoa there has been a lot of violence. In fact, this morning, I woke up with a story that one of my party members was shot. By afternoon, we had circumstances where the army, notably in Bayelsa State, had taken over several regions. For INEC, I will say there has been a lot of improvement.

“But I was very shocked that the careless mistake only happened in my ward particularly, and the targeted units were very big units that have large numbers of voters. ”

Also, the LP candidate in the state challenged the handling of the poll, alleging it was plagued with anomalies, like selling and buying of votes. He further claimed that the identity of LP polling agents were changed by INEC prior to election day.

Speaking with reporters after casting his ballot in his Agudama-Ekpetiama community, Yenagoa LG, Eradiri remarked, “Unfortunately, vote-buying was the order of the day, and the people were encouraging it and being bought.

“Behind the scenes, you see the buying and selling of votes going on; as you vote you collect your tallies. As you can see, people are confirming with their ballots. So, people don’t care about what you do. They only care about getting money.

“I am disappointed, not only in the process but also in the people, because I thought that the people understood now and that everybody has seen the nakedness of poverty, neglect and incompetence of leadership, hoping that will define the voting pattern, but I was fooled.”

The largest market in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Oja Tuntun, was the scene of an early Saturday morning fire that destroyed products valued at millions of naira and damaged no fewer than seventeen shops.

Sunday Special discovered that this market had three fire occurrences between July 2019 and December 2020, resulting in the destruction of numerous shops and commodities.

In a conversation with our correspondent, Adekunle Ibrahim, the spokesperson for the Osun State Fire Service, stated that firefighters responded to a distress call around 12:30 am from a resident residing near the market, even though the cause of the most recent incident’s market fire was still unknown.

Ibrahim revealed that a building housing sixteen businesses and a container inside the market was affected by the blazing fire when firefighters arrived on the scene. He also mentioned that a team from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, fire unit joined the Osun firefighters and stopped the fire from becoming worse.

“A fire incident at Olulere new market, Oja tuntun in Ile-Ife was reported to the Ile-Ife Zonal Fire Station at approximately 00:30 hours on Saturday, November 11, 2023,” he stated.

“Our soldiers encountered the fire well-alive and extinguished it with support from the OAU Fire Unit. Over N500 million worth of property was spared, but a block with 16 stores overall and one container meant that a total of 17 stores were impacted.

In a same spirit, Kehinde Adeleke, the public relations officer for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps’ Osun Command, stated that while firefighters fought to stop the fire from spreading to other areas of the market, command personnel were on duty to prevent looting.

The final lawsuit seeking the exclusion of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate from the governorship poll was dismissed by the Appellate Court today.

In delivering a ruling in an appeal filed by Mrs. Isikima Johnson against Sylva and two other parties, Justice Binta Zubar declared that the matter was not only unjusticeable but also that the appellant had brought it against the defendants in bad faith.

The Court concurred with Mr. James Ogwu Onoja, SAN, that Sylva cannot be upheld legally for the accusations of taking the governorship oath twice, as the first instance was declared invalid by appropriate courts.

Justices Zubar also rejected the accusations made against the APC in the appeal designated CA/ABJ/CV/1052/2023, stating that the party’s primary election on April 14, 2023, which resulted in Sylva being chosen as the flagbearer, was conducted illegally.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the African Progressive Party (APC) presented substantial evidence demonstrating that all legal procedures were followed in the primary election’s conduct, and Onoja’s arguments were accepted by the court in a majority decision.

In his brief on Sylva’s behalf, Onoja explained how the APC chose to elect its governorship candidate through a direct primary.

Additionally, how the 106 Wards of the 8 Local Government Areas of Bayelsa were administered by a 5-man Electoral Committee on April 14.

The senior attorney further detailed how Sylva received 52062 votes, placing her in first place, and the appellant receiving 584 votes, placing her fourth behind Joshua Maciver’s 2078 votes.

David Perewomini Lyon received 1584 votes, Ongoebi Etebu received 1277 votes, and Daumiebi Festus Sunday received 557 votes, placing it last.

The Appeal Court declared that the Appellant’s claims that Sylva emerged without a primary election were unfounded in light of the uncontested evidence and the monitoring report of INEC, a statutory authority.

“It was evident beyond a reasonable doubt from the uncontested independent report of INEC that the APC held a legitimate primary election and that the electoral umpire, as required by law, observed the proceedings.”

Additionally, Justice Zubar ruled that the appellant’s case was statute barred since it was filed as a pre-election matter beyond the legally permitted 14-day period.

Overall, the Court of Appeal maintained the ruling of Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which on September 26 dismissed the lawsuit due to lack of substance and merit.

Through an original summons, the appellant had brought APC, INEC, and Sylva before the Federal High Court, pleading for an order that would bar him from running in the next Bayelsa State governorship election in November.

She had given two reasons for her resentment of Sylvia. Sylva has taken the oath of office and the oath of allegiance twice after being elected governor twice.

She further asserted that the primary election on April 14 that gave rise to Sylva was illegitimate and unlawful because it was purportedly conducted outside of the APC’s rules.

On the other hand, the Court of Appeal upheld the High Court’s decision to reject the lawsuit.

During the Bayelsa State governorship election on Saturday, a few ad hoc staff at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) were attacked by what appeared to be All Progressives Congress (APC) goons.

Additionally, alleged APC thugs invaded polling places 14, 15, and 19 in the state’s Ogbia Local Government area at Ward 11 of Opume and Emakalakala, interfering with the electoral process.

However, a few outcomes were noted prior to the disturbance in the procedure.

Similarly, in Ward 3 of Olodiama village in Southern Ijaw Local Government area of the state, original result sheets from polling units 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, and 19 were taken by armed thugs.
