The boat disaster that happened in Kogi State’s Ibaji Local Government Area has now claimed the lives of 36 individuals, according to confirmation from the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA).

As the boat carried passengers from the communities of Akpu and Odumomo to Ilushi in Edo State, it capsized on Tuesday, carrying over 80 persons.

40 passengers were saved, but search and rescue operations are still going on, according to NIWA.

In his update on NTA’s News Xtra, Williams Isaac, Head of NIWA’s Idah Station, stated that the majority of the victims were from Onugwa and other riverine settlements in Ibaji.

Isaac clarified that among the passengers were mourners returning from a local funeral service, ladies, and children.

In order to help the impacted communities and recover more victims, he also gave the assurance that NIWA is collaborating with regional emergency teams and divers.

Former Commissioner Alleges Alex Otti Is Misappropriating Local Govt Funds

Governor Alex Otti is allegedly misappropriating local government monies, according to former Abia State Commissioner for Information and Strategy Eze Chikamnayo.

In an interview with Arise Television, Chikamnayo said that the governor has impeded the local government’s growth, making it impossible for it to function efficiently.

“Unfortunately, what we have today in Abia is that Alex Otti has mopped up all the funds going to the local governments,” he said. He has ensured that the grassroots development is firmly rooted in reality. Additionally, he has rendered it hard for municipal governments to function and survive.

Additionally, he refuted allegations that Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives,

He went on to say that Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, had no political disagreements with the governor and had simply asked for responsibility.

“The Honorable Benjamin Kalu and our beloved Governor Alex Otti have no personal issues. However, we, Ben Kalu, the APC, and every member of the Abia community are all saying, “Governor Alex Otti, practice what you preach,” Chikamnayo stated.

He emphasized that “transparency and accountability” are in Abia’s best interests, pointing out that Kalu’s request was appropriate given the state’s financial resources.

Transparency and accountability are in Abia’s best interests. Furthermore, we are aware that a significant amount of money has been sent to all states, not just Abia, as requested by Honourable Benjamin Kalu. And we are aware of President Tinubu’s outstanding performance. Napoleon was unable to do what he did. He’s liberated resources. And we are aware that the governors are expected to do much more due to the resources President Tinubu has provided to the states.

According to Chikamnayo, tangible development outcomes rather than rhetoric should be used to evaluate good administration. “A governor’s success cannot be determined solely by their slogans. When you compare the resources at the governor’s disposal with the deliverables the governor can present to the public, you can only conclude that the governor is performing exceptionally well. Therefore, every individual, not just in Abia but throughout the country, has the right to ask questions when the resources are not matching up or balancing with the deliverables.

In Taraba State, the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, or ASUP, has urged Governor Agbu Kefas to provide the long-anticipated 25–35% pay increase to employees of Taraba State Polytechnic, Suntai.
The recently elected ASUP Chairman in the state, Dr. Bala Sule, made the demand at a news conference held at the Jalingo campus of the organization.

Along with bemoaning the backlog of unpaid compensation arrears owed to staff, Dr. Sule emphasized the ongoing delay in implementing the authorized salary rise.

The state government should immediately respond to the association’s appeal, he said, adding that he will prioritize the financial well-being of union members during his term.

“As the chairman of ASUP, I will make every effort to draw Governor Kefas’ attention and urge him to enact our 25/35% pay rise.

He added, “We will also bring up the matter of unpaid salary arrears and inform him that it is not in the institution’s best interests to keep employees in trouble financially.”

While admitting the difficulties that employees face, Dr. Sule emphasized that the union would use diplomatic channels to pursue its demands and ruled out the idea of industrial action.

“No kind of strike action will occur while I’m in charge. He promised that we would continue to engage in dialogue to make sure our concerns were acknowledged, even if the government did not comply with our demands.

Dr. Sule also revealed plans to work with the national and zonal leadership of ASUP in order to advocate for the implementation of the salary adjustment and further involve the state administration.

In addition to restating the union’s dedication to employee welfare, he underlined that the new leadership would keep looking for amicable and beneficial solutions to the problems that its members face.

No Hiding Place for Bandits in Kwara, Says Governor Abdulrazaq

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has said that those responsible for the recent tragic attack on the Oke-Ode community in Ifelodun Local Government Area will not evade justice and has pledged to rid the state of bandits and kidnappers.
Several people were killed and locals were reportedly terrified when gunmen ambushed a traditional chief and local vigilantes in the area on Sunday.

The governor said he had already informed President Bola Tinubu about the incident in a statement released on Wednesday by his chief press secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye. He also reiterated his request for more federal deployment to secure the border communities in Kwara.

He said that as part of heightened military activities in the state, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 2nd Division had been moved to Ilorin by Army Headquarters.

On Monday night, AbdulRazaq revealed that the Army, DSS, and Police forces began a significant operation along the Kwara-Kogi border near Baba Sango.

“Approximately 15 armed bandits were neutralized during an operation by the Army, DSS, and Police combined troops on Monday night near Baba Sango, along the Kwara–Kogi boundary. On Tuesday, the same procedure was carried out,” he stated.

The governor went on to say that he chaired a State Security Council meeting at Government House in Ilorin on Tuesday night, when state and federal security resources were combined into a unified plan for operations in Kwara North and South.

Residents were reassured by AbdulRazaq that his government will keep supporting security forces and providing logistics to ensure the safety of people and property.

“The security forces have promised me that they will smoke out and remove the criminals from their hiding homes. We will use all available resources to combat insecurity. Kwara will not serve as a haven for criminals, he declared.

Gangs operating within the state’s boundaries were forewarned by the governor: “Any criminal who tries to disturb the peace in Kwara may flee, but you cannot evade justice.” Kwara’s citizens own it, and their tranquility will be protected.

Residents have expressed new concerns and calls for stricter security measures in response to the Oke-Ode killings, particularly in border areas where bandits are thought to be launching operations, according to reports.

The government’s promise coincides with stakeholders’ ongoing calls for long-term fixes to the state’s vulnerability.

Dogara Laments: ‘The North is Under a Curse’ Amid Rising Hardship

0

Yakubu Dogara, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, has cautioned that the extent of the murders and violence in northern Nigeria has cast the area under a spiritual curse and that the situation needs to be handled as a national emergency.

During a panel discussion at the Nigeria Investment and Industrialization Summit (NNIIS) 2025, which was hosted by the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) in Abuja on Tuesday, Dogara stated that the situation has transcended typical socio-political issues.

Because it is human blood, “if you are a person of faith, you will know that we are operating under a curse with the kind of bloodletting we are witnessing in the North,” the former Speaker stated.

He expressed regret that the level of poverty and insecurity in the area had catastrophically increased and cautioned that unless immediate action was made to solve the situation, Nigeria’s overall progress would continue to halt.

It is not a regional prerogative to develop northern Nigeria. We have to consider it a national emergency. He warned that Nigeria would not advance if the enormous population in the North remained undeveloped.

Dogara pushed northern leaders and people to take control of their own fate and break out from a culture that relies on outside help.

Instead of carrying on with our routine, we must adopt radical, revolutionary action. He said, “We have to take control of our own destiny because help is not coming from anywhere.”

2027 Elections: PDP Dissolves Cross River Congress, Installs Caretaker Leadership

0

The establishment of a Caretaker Committee to manage the party’s operations in the state has been approved by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which has declared the Cross River State Congress invalid.

This was said in a statement released in Abuja on Tuesday by Debo Ologunagba, the party’s national publicity secretary.

According to Ologunagba, the decision was made in accordance with the party’s 2017 amendments to the constitution.

He claims that even though the PDP National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, wrote a separate letter to the Independent National Electoral Commission on September 25 informing them of the postponement of the congresses in Cross River, Plateau, and Kebbi States, National Chairman Umar Damagum said that the Cross River congress would go ahead as scheduled on September 27.

Ologunagba explained that although some people gathered in Calabar on Saturday, the state did not have a congress.

As the State Executive Committee of the Cross River State Chapter was elected four years ago, its term ended, and the NWC took the step of forming a Caretaker Committee in the state, the party’s spokesman noted.

As of Wednesday, October 1st, 2025, the Caretaker Committee will oversee the Party’s operations in Cross River State for a maximum of three months, or until a new State Executive Committee is chosen in the state.

Bassey Joseph (Acting Secretary) and Bassey Eko Ewa (Chairman) are the members of the Cross River State PDP Caretaker Committee. Other members include Godswill Obindim, Edem Ekong, Raymond Abo, Moses Bisuakefe, Agabi Dominic Oko, Walter Nandi Esom, Ekpo Asuquo, Ankot Cohbom, Ofana Raphael Odo, Lynne Bassey, Etim Okon, Agabi Dominic Oko, Victor Erig Takon, and Udie Mike.

In order to advance the Party, the NWC calls on all leaders, important stakeholders, and hordes of members in Cross River State to stay together and keep cooperating, the statement read.

Court Hands Death Sentence to Former Minister for Corruption

0

Tang Renjian, the former agricultural minister of China, was convicted of bribery and corruption and given a two-year reprieve before being executed.
The People’s Court of Changchun in Jilin Province reportedly handed down the decision on Tuesday, September 30, 2025.

The court claimed that between 2007 and 2024, Tang, the former governor of Gansu, took cash and property bribes totaling over $38 million.

According to the ruling, Tang’s conduct seriously harmed both the people and the state.

He apologized, acknowledged the crime, and gave back a portion of the illicit gains.

The court suspended his execution for two years as a result of his actions, in accordance with the capital sentence rules of China’s criminal code.

If the 63-year-old politician behaves well during the respite time, his punishment under the suspended sentence arrangement could be changed to either a fixed jail term or life in prison.

As part of President Xi Jinping’s anti-corruption campaign, which continues to target public officials nationwide who are suspected of wrongdoing, Tang’s conviction joins an increasing number of high-ranking officials who have been penalized.

Chaos as LP Factional Chairman, Julius Abure, Attacked in Benin Airport

0

After Julius Abure, the LP’s factional national chairman, was physically assaulted at the Benin Airport in Edo State on Friday, the party’s conflict took a violent turn.
Obiora Ifoh, the National Publicity Secretary of the Abure-led group, said in a statement that the event happened when Abure was being harassed by a woman who went by the name of Precious Oruche, also called Mama P, as she boarded a Max Air aircraft from Abuja to Benin.

Ifoh reportedly said that Oruche challenged Abure in the boarding line at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, which is where the altercation started.

Ifoh claimed that even after flight attendants intervened to calm her down, she persisted in the attack during the journey.

After arriving at Benin Airport, the scene apparently intensified as Oruche allegedly tried to lunge at Abure once more before being escorted away by security personnel and turned over to the police.

According to the LP spokesperson, Oruche, who is a content producer and a member of a “known political family,” also boasted in one of her online videos that she was untouchable because of her contacts in the police hierarchy.

“You have killed Labour Party and you are the reason why Obi is no longer in the Labour Party,” she allegedly said, vowing to keep attacking Abure and other party officials, according to Ifoh.

Described as a “suicidal aggression” against the party’s leadership, Ifoh condemned the act.

He went on to say, “The Labour Party’s leadership is really disturbed by this cyberbullying and the effects this political agent’s actions have had on the party. We are urging the Inspector General of Police to look into this attack on the Labour Party leadership, and specifically on Barrister Julius Abure, in detail.

He emphasized that the attack was an intentional attempt by anti-democratic forces to undermine the party and asked members to maintain composure while the authorities dealt with the situation.

Dangote Refinery Faces Crude, Gas Supply Halt as PENGASSAN Orders Shutdown

0

Following the dismissal of more than 800 employees who joined the union, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has directed its members to immediately stop supplying gas and crude oil to the Dangote Petroleum Refinery.
Lumumba Okugbawa, the union’s general secretary, signed a directive on Saturday stating that the refinery’s “illegitimate and provocative action” against its members prompted the shutdown.

Addressed to branch chairmen nationwide, the letter urged members to take firm action against the facility that produces 650,000 barrels per day.

“As you are aware, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery management has disengaged our members in response to the exercise of their constitutional right to be unionized,” the union said.

Instead of interacting with us in a meaningful way to make amends, they have gone farther on a mission of disinformation and propaganda to defend this illegitimacy.

As a result of these, you are instructed to immediately turn off NGIC’s gas supply. All of the refinery’s crude oil supply valves ought to be closed. The loading process for the ship that is going there needs to end right away.

The Nigerian Gas Infrastructure Company (NGIC) branch was particularly instructed by Okugbawa to make sure that the refinery’s gas supply was immediately cut off, and all branch chairmen were instructed to report compliance progress as soon as possible.

“Injury to one, injury to all,” the letter continued.

Less than twenty-four hours have passed since Dangote Refinery acknowledged that it had fired a few employees for alleged sabotage, but denied that the action was related to unionization.

However, PENGASSAN maintains that more than 800 Nigerian workers were singled out soon after they willingly joined the organization, accusing management of unfair labor practices and union-busting.
