Okonjo Udokanma Must Repay $97,982 to Providus Bank, Court Lowers Interest Rate to 10%

0

Mrs. Okonjo Udokanma, the CEO of Fine & Country West Africa, has been ordered by the Federal High Court in Lagos to pay Providus Bank Plc $97,982.19, which is the remaining balance of an overdraft facility connected to her World Elite Card.

Providus Bank brought the case, FHC/L/CS/901/2025, which focused on whether the defendant had accepted and used the overdraft capacity as stipulated in her account-opening agreement and whether the bank had the right to collect the unpaid balance with interest.

In his ruling, Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa concluded that Mrs. Okonjo consented to Clauses 12 and 23A–B, which give the bank the right to issue and collect overdrafts with relevant interest, by willingly signing her account-opening forms.

The Court observed that her frequent withdrawals exceeding her account balance were indicative of her explicit use and acceptance of the service.

The Court affirmed the bank’s ability to collect the debt, but rejected Providus Bank’s request for a 26% interest rate, lowering it to 10% annually until the debt is fully repaid.

“Courts will intervene where such rates become unnecessarily exorbitant,” noted Justice Lewis-Allagoa, despite banks’ right to charge interest on overdrafts.

Mitchel A. Aribisala, the attorney for Providus Bank, argued that the defendant’s regular use of the World Elite Card and her refusal to contest the bank’s claims constituted to recognition of the facility and its associated responsibilities, and the judge agreed.

The defendant’s Bank Verification Number (BVN) was linked to Fine & Country International Realty (West Africa) Ltd’s account, and the company submitted a corresponding application to lift the PND restriction on that account. However, the application was denied.

In JSC BTA Bank v. Ablyazov[2015] UKSC 64, the UK Supreme Court cited its ruling that assets may be frozen if the debtor has direct or indirect control over them, even if they are not legally or beneficially owned by the debtor. Judge Lewis

Since Mrs. Okonjo was the company’s CEO and had operational control over its finances, Allagoa reasoned that the freezing order was lawful and constitutional.

Oshiomhole Claims Calls for Jonathan’s 2027 Bid Come from His Opponents

0

Former Edo State governor Adams Oshiomhole has cautioned former president Goodluck Jonathan against running for president again in 2027, claiming that doing so would harm his reputation.

On “Sunday Politics” on Channels Television, Oshiomhole stated that only people who have bad intentions for Jonathan would encourage him to return to politics.

If Jonathan were to run for office, the All Progressives Congress (APC) would easily defeat him, according to the senator from Edo North.

“How is Jonathan a danger? When the PDP was actually PDP, we beat him earlier,” Oshiomhole remarked.

“I think only his adversary will pressure a man to run for office if he had the PDP at its height and he lost.”

The former APC national chairman counseled Jonathan to maintain his reputation as a respected statesman, pointing out that his 2015 decision to accept loss won him praise from all around the world.

If I could give him advice, I would tell him to keep this status, sir. “You don’t need to govern for nine years; you governed for eight,” he added.

Jonathan, Oshiomhole continued, had “managed to demonstrate that out of power, you can be relevant and at peace.”

He also hailed Jonathan’s well-known surrender address, calling it one of the most noble things a Nigerian leader has ever done.

Observing his ascent to that position. If I were him, I would live out my days seeking meaning, which he has already discovered, and talking because he should just let those legacies alone after he conceded defeat and stated, “That famous quote about the blood of a Nigerian not being worth my ambition.”

The former labor leader also claimed that since Jonathan left office, his support base in the south-south region had diminished.

Since the South-South is no longer the PDP, we will defeat him if he comes out very flat. “So where will he begin?” he inquired.

In 2015, Muhammadu Buhari of the APC defeated Jonathan, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

APPLICATIONS FOR JONATHAN’S RETURN

Jonathan, who led Nigeria from 2010 to 2015, has been rumored to run in the 2027 election. Regarding his upcoming political move, the former president has remained silent.

Prior to the upcoming general election, Jonathan has also been the target of the main opposition party.

Some PDP leaders, including as Abba Moro, the senator for Benue South, and Bala Mohammed, the governor of Bauchi, revealed that the opposition party has been courting Jonathan to run for its presidential ticket.

Having completed the four-year term of Umaru Yar’Adua, who passed away on May 5, 2010, Jonathan is eligible for another term in office.

Jonathan is invited to run, but Nigerians would remember his “dismal record in office,” according to Bayo Onanuga, President Bola Tinubu’s special adviser on media and strategy.

Jonathan has the right to run, but the former president might have to deal with doubts regarding his eligibility because he has been sworn in twice, the presidential spokeswoman continued.

NNPCL Links Surge in Cooking Gas Prices to PENGASSAN Industrial Action

0

The recent increase in the cost of cooking gas, or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), has been ascribed by Bayo Ojulari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), to the Oil and Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria’s (PENGASSAN) industrial action.

According to reports, Ojulari told State House media on Sunday after meeting with President Bola Tinubu that the strike had caused a fictitious price spike by interfering with loading and distribution for a number of days.

On the other hand, Ojulari promised Nigerians that the rise will soon subside as things return to normal.

He claimed that because loading and movements were delayed by two or three days during the strike, the rise you observed was largely fictitious. You see that influence as a result of that. The entire restoration of distribution takes time as things settle back down to normal.

He also said that some retailers were exploiting the interruption.

Ojulari went on to say, “You know, people in Nigeria take advantage of opportunities. Some of the individuals who had reserves and resources have had to pay the price for such delay. With everything returning to normal, I anticipate that prices will revert to their pre-strike levels.

According to what was understood, the raise came after PENGASSAN’s walkout over the Dangote Refinery’s termination of Nigerian workers. Following intervention by the federal government, the action that had halted operations across the country was suspended on October 1.

In order to resume regular operations, the Dangote Group subsequently consented to redeploy the impacted employees.

Senator Umeh Voices Disappointment Over Lagos Trade Fair Complex Demolition

Senator Victor Umeh, who represents Anambra Central, has called the demolition of a few buildings at the Trade Fair Complex in Lagos an act of impunity.

He declared that the Lagos State government’s action was unlawful and blatantly beyond of its jurisdiction.

Senator Umeh said that the Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning did not have the legal authority to authorize the demolition project during his appearance on Monday’s episode of Channels Television’s breakfast show, The Morning Brief.

“What the Commissioner for Physical Planning in Lagos State did was an affront and a breach of the law.

The problem is how to treat people while taking the law into account. Both the constitution and a body of laws govern the nation.

Umeh stated, “I am disappointed to learn that the Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning came to defend his unlawful action.”

The former National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) maintained that the Trade Fair Complex is still a federal facility that is run by the federal government rather than the state governments.

The Lagos State Government invaded the Trade Fair Complex with large machinery to demolish people’s buildings and investments without cause.

The federal government, not state governments, is in charge of federal lands. Both state and federal lands exist. Any property owned by the Federal Government in Lagos is listed in the Federal Land Registry in Ikoyi rather than the Land Registry in Alausa, the senator stated.

He went on to say that the Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning had broken the law with his actions.

As the Trade Fair Management Board has been exclusively in charge of managing the complex, including approving developments, setting property rates, and collecting ground rent, he said the state government’s actions constituted an infringement.

“What the Commissioner for Physical Planning in Lagos State did was an affront and a breach of the law.

He said, “Until they moved in to demolish the buildings on September 25th, about two weeks ago, the Lagos State Government had never gone there to carry out any of those functions.”

He said that prior to the buildings being demolished, the complex’s merchants and store owners were not given enough notice.

Senator Umeh further dismissed reports that the affected buildings were constructed on canals and drainages without approval, insisting that all affected buildings were approved by the Trade Fair Management Board.”

“The Lagos State Government’s ability to move in there without warning also astounded them. “Not even the traders were written to or questioned about anything,” he claimed.

House of Reps Suggests Single-Day Voting for Presidential, Gubernatorial, and Legislative Elections

0

The House of Representatives has suggested same-day elections for parliamentary, gubernatorial, and presidential positions in an attempt to increase voter turnout in Nigeria.

The House of Representatives Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, revealed the information Thursday in Abuja.

Speaking to the European Union (EU) team, Abbas clarified that the plan is a component of the broader election reforms that are being examined.

As with the single-day election, he stated, “it is to hold the state assembly membership, governorship, presidential, and National Assembly elections on the same day to help reduce our electoral process, particularly on the voter turnout.”

“To ensure that INEC has all the resources and provisions required to make the 2027 election better than the 2023 election, we will take the necessary steps.”

However, he asked the EU to back campaigns to raise awareness and advocate for causes.

According to reports, this month’s National Assembly vote is anticipated on a number of legislation pertaining to constitutional amendments.

Goodluck Jonathan Can Contest 2027 Presidency, Says Ologunagba

0

According to Debo Ologunagba, the PDP’s national publicity secretary, former president Goodluck Jonathan is entitled to run for president in 2027.
The PDP constitution permits any member in good standing to pursue any position, including the president, according to Olugunagba, who made this claim on Friday while appearing on Arise Television.

His recent comments about Jonathan, he explained, were taken out of context.

He brought up the fact that there are other members of the party who are just as qualified as Jonathan to run for president, Ologunagba clarified.

“The context of your inquiry,” he said. Allow me to reiterate, however, what you said about Professor Jerry Ghana. I’m happy you expressed his viewpoint. Naturally, he also has a right to his He is one of the party’s founding fathers and a former official. We appreciate his viewpoint, of course. That is what makes democracy so wonderful.

We are able to freely voice our thoughts under the PDP. Naturally, it continues to be so. Once a choice has been made, the party will transmit that decision.

“Let me state a hypothesis. Misconceptions exist among party members and, naturally, among Nigerians, who occasionally attempt to mislead. We adhere strictly to the Peoples Democratic Party’s constitution, which governs the organization. It’s fascinating that the party has positioned it to the south, yet anyone can now want to be anything under its program, including the president.

“The party has President Goodluck Jonathan as a member. Since he hasn’t stated that he isn’t a member, he is free to aim for any position as long as he is in good standing with the party. I don’t have any reason to think that he isn’t.

What I said was that, despite the fact that President Jonathan’s name is being mentioned and bandied about, there are a lot of highly qualified people in the PDP’s ranks, including members and governors, many of whom have proven their abilities through their results and performances.

The most obvious argument that can be made is that one. It wasn’t the party I was speaking for. To the degree that the party has decided that the presidential candidate would be chosen from among the governors, they are obviously qualified and highly qualified if such a choice is made.

Fresh Security Alarm as Bandits Kidnap Family Close to Kogi Senator’s Home

In the early hours of Friday, a woman and her two children were kidnapped by gunmen suspected of being bandits in Kogi State’s Yagba West Local Government Area.
According to reports, the attack took place in Bareke, Egbe community, near the home of Senator Sunday Karimi, who represents Kogi West Senatorial District, at around two in the morning.

The mother and two of her children were abducted from their home at around two in the morning on this Friday, while her husband managed to flee with injuries. A source told SaharaReporters, “It happened very close to the house of the current Kogi West Senator, Sunday Karimi, in Egbe.”

It was discovered that the woman’s husband was hurt during the raid while attempting to escape.

Residents say the entire town is on edge and the family is traumatized as a result of the incident.

Less than twenty-four hours had passed after another attack in Ejiba, also in Yagba West, when the Friday kidnapping occurred.

A commercial bus was reportedly assaulted by criminals on Thursday, resulting in the abduction of every passenger.

The incident resulted in the death of a biker who was only recognized by his serial number, 256. Earlier in the week, Yagba West saw another wave of attacks.

Gunmen raided Bethel Farm in Ejiba on Wednesday, October 1, and took three persons hostage.

One of the employees was shot by the robbers during their attack on a bread distributor along the Ejiba–Odo-Eri route the same day. A burned motorcycle that was thought to be the property of local vigilante agents who faced the bandits was later shown in photographs.

Numerous people have been displaced as a result of the attacks. Following people’ flight for safety, SaharaReporters published a video of the Okunran settlement in Yagba West on September 26, 2025, which featured vacant streets and abandoned dwellings.

According to sources, locals were compelled to leave their houses due to continuous attacks, leaving behind deserted towns.

In order to bring peace back to Yagba West, locals have persisted in pleading with authorities for prompt action.

The Senate Committee on Services is chaired by Senator Karimi, who is based in the local government.

Ex-Senate Minority Leader Mwadkwon Confident PDP Will Retain Plateau, Regardless of Mutfwang’s Alleged Defection

0

Senator Simon Mwadkwon, the former Senate Minority Leader, thinks that even if Governor Caleb Mutfwang defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) to run for governor in the 2027 election, Plateau State will continue to be a PDP stronghold.

Ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial elections, there have been many rumors and variations that Mutfwang might defect from the PDP to the APC. However, Mwadkwon, who served as the representative for Plateau North Senatorial District in the National Assembly before being ousted by an Appeal Court decision, stated that even in such a scenario, the APC would not pose a threat because the state would still be a PDP state.

In addition to dismissing the suggestion that Mutfwang is one of four PDP governors preparing to switch to the ruling APC, the former senator made the audacious claim during a Thursday interview with a select group of media in Jos. The governor has previously denied the rumors of defection.

According to the former lawmaker, “Plateau is always a PDP state, and whether the governor leaves the party or not, the people of the state know that their love for the PDP is unparalleled.”

The PDP would find a suitable replacement for Gov. Mutfwang and the party would win, he said, even if he chose to leave the party and run on another platform. He advised Mutfwang to stay in the PDP because it is the only party that would be in his best interests.

The governor of Plateau State has repeatedly stated in public that he has no intention of joining the APC, thus I don’t believe he is interested in doing so. Mwadkwon continued, “He has not backed down on this issue despite multiple appeals.”

Wike Introduces Free Mother–Baby Kits, Advocates Support for Expectant Mothers

0

As part of celebrations for Nigeria’s 65th anniversary of independence, Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has started giving away Mother-Baby Kits for free.

Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, the FCT Minister of State, represented Wike at the occasion and publicly inaugurated the initiative at the Asokoro District Hospital.

Dr. Mahmoud, who spoke at the launch, stated that the Mother-Baby Kits are a component of the administration’s main health initiatives, which are designed to provide a safe start in life for both mothers and infants.

“No mother should give birth without the resources and assistance she requires, and no child should be born without proper care,” she stated.

“These kits give every mother and infant the greatest start possible, demonstrating our strong commitment to maternal and child health. They have essential medical equipment and supplies to guarantee safe childbirth, delivery, and care for newborns throughout the FCT,” she stated.

The Abuja Breathe Fresh Air Project, a clean energy initiative that encourages the use of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cookers rather than firewood, charcoal, and kerosene, was also introduced by the administration in addition to the Mother-Baby Kits.

The two programs, in Mahmoud’s opinion, represent Wike’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” which aims to address both long-term environmental sustainability and urgent healthcare needs.

“We are addressing one of the silent but deadly health hazards in homes — respiratory diseases caused by smoke inhalation — by substituting intelligent and efficient LPG cookers for polluting fuels,” she continued.

Additionally, the Minister of State emphasized that the FCT Administration has been strengthening its healthcare system through improved working conditions, staff training, and infrastructural improvements, such as the construction of a Public Health Emergency Operations Center and hospital renovations.

Maternal and newborn mortality rates in Nigeria continue to be alarmingly high, as previously noted by Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, Mandate Secretary of the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat.

She pointed out that a lot of these avoidable deaths happen because women don’t have access to basic, safe delivery gear when they give birth.

To bridge this gap, the Renewed Hope Mother-Baby Kit program was established, Fasawe continued.

“Every kit includes essentials to guarantee a safe and sanitary delivery for mother and child.”

As part of the rollout, some expectant mothers were given free Baby Kits and LPG stoves at the occasion.

Among those present were Adedayo Benjamin Laniyi, the Mandate Secretary for Women Affairs; Dr. Baba-Gana Adams, the Permanent Secretary of the Health Services and Environment Secretariat; Abubakar Ahmadu, the acting Director-General of the FCT Hospital Management Board; and Hajiya Rakiyya Wamako, the acting Executive Secretary of the FCT Primary Health Care Development Board.

Mwadkwon: PDP Has Contingency Plans if Mutfwang Defects to APC

0

Simon Mwadkwon, the former Senate Minority Leader, has stated his belief that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will maintain solid control over Plateau State, even if Governor Caleb Mutfwang decides to move to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in time for the 2027 governorship contest.
Mwadkwon, who served as Plateau North’s representative in the National Assembly prior to being removed by an Appeal Court decision, disclosed this to reporters in Jos on Thursday.

In recent weeks, there have been rumors that Governor Mutfwang is one of four PDP governors who are purportedly planning to join the APC in order to increase their electoral prospects.

However, Mwadkwon downplayed the rumors, pointing out that the governor had repudiated them in public.

The governor of Plateau State has repeatedly stated in public that he has no intention of joining the APC, thus I don’t believe he is interested in doing so. He stated that he has not backed down on this topic in spite of multiple appeals.

Regardless of Mutfwang’s political destiny, the former congressman insisted that Plateau’s political loyalty would always be based in the PDP.

“Plateau is always a PDP state, and the people of the state know that their love for the PDP is unmatched, whether the governor stays in the party or not,” he said.

Even if he were to leave the PDP, Mwadkwon emphasized, the party would support another capable candidate to win in 2027. He advised the governor to remain in the party.

He went on to say: “The PDP would find a qualified successor for Gov. Mutfwang and the party would win if he chose to leave the party and run on a different platform. The PDP is the only party that will look out for his best interests.
