Kanu’s brother raises the alarm over IPOB leader’s health

Court denies Nnmadi Kanu bail

The family of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has raised the alarm that their son is critically ill in the custody of the Department of State Services.

The family claimed that he urgently needs a cardiologist and urged President Bola Tinubu not to allow him to die in the DSS custody.

Kanu has been in custody since 2021 after he was renditioned to the country from Kenya.

His bail application based on his deteriorating health condition was declined by Justice Binta Nyako on Tuesday.

In a statement on Saturday, Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel, said he was informed that his brother was critically ill.

Emmanuel stated that Kanu needs urgent medical attention to avert a major health crisis.

The statement partly read, “We got information this morning that he is critically down. He has not been granted access to his personal doctors, and he urgently needs a cardiologist. He should not be allowed to die in DSS custody”.

The family had earlier berated the political elite in the South-East over their failure to intercede with the President to help secure the release of their son.

They alleged that some people were benefiting from his continued incarceration, hence the apparent apathy on the part of the political elite to engage the President in his release.

“How be it that nobody among Igbo political leaders has reached Tinubu to discuss Nnamdi Kanu’s release almost a year after he came to power?

“Is it not deliberate? Have they not been gaining access to the President concerning other issues? It’s a shame that Kanu is being punished for asking for the freedom of Ndigbo, and the leaders have abandoned him to die in DSS custody,” the family said.

Clergy forum seeks justice for slain Taraba pastor, nine others

The Clergy of Tiv Extraction Forum in Bali and Gashaka Local Government Areas of Taraba State has called for the arrest and prosecution of the killers of Pastor Jacob Abah, his wife, son, and seven others during a bus attack in Donga Local Government Area of the state last week.

Addressing a press conference in Jalingo on Saturday, the leader of the forum, Nathaniel Saawua said, aside from those who were killed, those who sustained injuries in the attack have been left to foot their bills as no government official has either visited them in the hospital or contacted their families.

Saawua lamented the continuous silence of the government over the issue.

He said, “It is with a heavy heart that we come forward to address you today on the developments that followed the recent gruesome and barbaric murder of Rev. Abah Jacob and his wife, Marian Abah alongside several other persons by Ichen Militia on Wednesday, March 13, 2024 at Mararaba in Donga Local Government Area of Taraba State.

“Rev. Abah Jacob, until his murder, was a pastor with The African Church, Kyado Archdeaconry, posted to The African Church Adi Parish in Bali Local Government Area of Taraba State. But since the gruesome murder, it appears to us that nobody is bothered because no one family of the victims has been contacted by the authorities and no official visitation to the families by any government official from Bali or Donga local government Councils.

“It is most pathetic to know that those who sustained injuries but divinely escaped were admitted at the General Hospital Bali. One person has so far died in the hospital, and some of them have little or nothing to foot the bills of the treatments they are receiving. This is even as some have resigned to fate as they have nothing that will sustain their stay at the hospital

“While we draw the attention of the authorities’ concern to this pathetic and unfortunate situation, we want to call on spirited individuals who are touched by this incidence to come to the aid of these victims and the bereaved by providing succour to them to alleviate some of their physical and emotional pains.”

While commending the efforts of the police in Bali Division who assisted in the evacuation of the corpses of the victims who were ambushed and murdered between Gankwe and Mararaba in Donga Local Government for burial, the forum appealed for a full investigation into the murder of the commuters.

Efforts to get the reaction of the state Commissioner for Information and Reorientation, Zainab Jalingo, over the allegation of government neglect of the victims, failed as her line was not reachable at the time of filing this report.

The state governor, Agbu Kefas, in the wake of the attack last week through the Commissioner for Information and Reorientation, condemned the attack and ordered a full investigation into the attack.

Nine die in Brazil storm

Nine die in Brazil storm

A powerful storm has claimed at least nine lives in southeastern Brazil, particularly in the mountainous part of Rio de Janeiro state, where authorities on Saturday deployed rescue teams to deal with a “critical” situation.

Three people died in a house collapse in the city of Petropolis, 70 kilometers (45 miles) from the capital, according to a bulletin from an emergency committee comprising Rio government and civil defense officials.

In addition, an AFP team confirmed the discovery Saturday of another body in the rubble. Earlier, a girl who had been buried overnight was pulled out alive.

Other deaths were reported earlier in Santa Cruz da Serra, where a man drowned when his truck plunged into a river; in Teresopolis, where a person died in a house collapse; and in Arraial do Cabo, where a person was struck by lightning.

In addition, two children, aged three and nine, died Friday in separate storm-related events in Sao Paolo state, officials said.

Late Friday, Rio Governor Claudio Castro said the situation in Petropolis was “critical” due to “intense rains and the overflowing of the Quitandinha River.”

Dozens of soldiers with dogs were deployed to the scene, while schools opened their doors to the displaced, the governor said.

As of Saturday morning, some 90 people had been rescued alive, the bulletin said.

Images on local media showed rivers of water, mud and debris rushing down slopes in picturesque Petropolis, where memories remain fresh of a catastrophic storm in February 2022 that claimed 241 lives.

The latest storm dropped 270 millimeters (11 inches) of rain in just 24 hours, the Rio government said.

The National Institute of Meteorology had predicted a severe storm, particularly in Rio, with rainfall of 200mm a day from Friday through Sunday — more than the 141mm the area normally receives in all of March.

Rio authorities had declared an administrative holiday on Friday as the storm approached and urged people to stay home.

The rains came as a powerful cold front descended on the area just days after a record heat wave had seen temperatures of up to 62 centigrade (143 Fahrenheit).

Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ekiti State on Saturday expressed the need to discipline members who engage in anti-party activities

The PDP State Publicity Secretary, Raphael Adeyanju, said that the leaders while condemning anti-party activities, stated at a unity meeting in Ado Ekiti, “That the party organs at all levels should discipline such affected few disgruntled elements within the party in the state to serve as deterrence to others.”

Adeyanju said in a statement in Ado Ekiti on Saturday, “The leaders further decided to work more on unity and reconciliations and nominated Kehinde Odebunmi as the chair of the reconciliation committee, to work together with three other members each from the three senatorial districts, with a mandate to resolve all disagreements at all levels within the party.

“The party leaders also sensitised and showed their readiness to participate fully in the incoming PDP ward and Local Government congresses and promised to work together and mobilise extensively for the success of the congresses and the rejuvenation of the party back to winning ways.

Russia arrests concert hall gunmen as death toll hits 115

Moscow concert hall attack death toll hits 93

Russia on Saturday said it had arrested 11 people including four gunmen over the attack on a Moscow concert hall claimed by the Islamic State, as the death toll rose to 115.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has yet to comment publicly on the attack and Moscow has not addressed the Islamic State’s claim of responsibility, even as some lawmakers pointed to a possible Ukraine connection.

Camouflaged gunmen opened fire at the packed Crocus City Hall in Moscow’s northern suburb of Krasnogorsk on Friday evening ahead of a concert by Soviet-era rock band Piknik in the deadliest attack in Russia for at least a decade.

Russia’s FSB security service said some of the perpetrators had fled towards the Russia-Ukraine border, adding that the assailants had “appropriate contacts” in the country.

It did not provide further details.

Some Russian lawmakers also pointed to Kyiv, without providing evidence.

“The main interested party could most likely be Ukraine and its patrons … we can’t rule it out,” said senior Russian MP Andrey Kartapolov.

Ukraine, which has been facing a Russian military offensive for the past two years, had “nothing to do” with the attack, according to a statement by presidential aide Mykhailo Podolyak on Telegram.

The Kremlin said the head of the FSB security service had informed President Vladimir Putin about the arrests, while authorities warned the number of fatalities was set to keep rising, with more than 100 still hospitalised and a search of the burnt-out venue ongoing.

“FSB Director Alexander Bortnikov reported to the president on the detention of 11 people, including four terrorists involved in the terrorist attack at Crocus City Hall,” it said.

Putin himself has not made any public remarks or been seen in public in the more than 12 hours since the attack.

The Kremlin said he was being kept constantly informed and a government official said he had wished a speedy recovery to the victims.

At least 115 killed

Russia’s Investigative Committee, which probes major crimes, said rescue workers were still working on site, pulling bodies from the building.

“The emergency services have found more bodies while removing the rubble. The death toll now stands at 115 people,” it said in a statement on Telegram.

The number of fatalities was likely to rise further, as the governor of the Moscow region said rescuers would continue to scour the site for “several days.”

Investigators said people died both from gunshot wounds and from smoke inhalation after a fire engulfed the 6,000-seater venue.

“The terrorists used a flammable liquid to set fire to the concert hall’s premises, where spectators were located, including wounded,” the Investigative Committee said.

Flames had quickly spread through the venue on Friday after reports of the mass shooting, with screaming concert-goers rushing to emergency exits.

Some filmed the gunmen from the upper floors as they appeared to methodically walk through the stalls shooting people, footage shared on social media showed.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility on Friday, saying its fighters attacked “a large gathering” on Moscow’s outskirts and “retreated to their bases safely”.

Global condemnation

Russian authorities have called it a “terrorist attack”, but have not commented on the Islamic State’s claim.

Some 107 people were still in hospital on Saturday morning, according to Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry.

Russian Telegram channels, including Baza which is close to the security services, and a lawmaker said some of the suspects were from the central Asian nation of Tajikistan.

In a statement, Tajikistan’s foreign affairs ministry said it had not received any information from Moscow about the involvement of its citizens.

In Moscow, residents formed long queues in the Saturday morning rain to donate blood, according to videos posted by state media outlets.

Memorial posters featuring a single candle replaced advertising billboards at some Moscow bus stops, the RIA Novosti state agency reported.

Major events were cancelled across the country, including a friendly football match between Russia and Paraguay set to take place in Moscow on Monday.

Statements of condemnation from world leaders continued to roll in.

On Saturday, a spokesperson for Afghanistan’s foreign ministry said the Taliban “condemns in the strongest terms the recent terrorist attack in Moscow, Russia … and considers it a blatant violation of all human standards.”

US warning dismissed

Attention is also being focused on Russia’s powerful intelligence services in the wake of the attack.

Just three days before, Putin had publicly dismissed Western warnings of an imminent attack in Moscow as propaganda designed to scare Russian citizens.

On 7 March, the US embassy in Russia had issued a security alert saying it was “monitoring reports that extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow, to include concerts.”

Washington said it had directly warned Russian authorities about a “planned terrorist attack” possibly targeting “large gatherings” in Moscow.

The United States had “shared this information with Russian authorities,” National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said.

But speaking to FSB chiefs last Tuesday, Putin said: “Recent provocative statements by a number of official Westerns structures about the possibility of terrorist attacks in Russia … resembles outright blackmail and an intention to intimidate and destabilise our society.”

Earlier in March, the FSB said it had killed Islamic State militants who were planning an attack on a Moscow synagogue.

Over recent weeks the agency has announced on an almost daily basis the arrest of several pro-Ukrainian saboteurs it said were plotting attacks on Russian military infrastructure.

Putin vows severe punishment for Moscow concert hall attackers

Russian President, Vladimir Putin, on Saturday described the attack on a concert hall that killed more than 100 as a “barbaric terrorist act”.

Putin also vowed harsh retribution to all those involved.

In a televised address, Putin said all four gunmen had been arrested before they had a chance to cross the border into Ukraine.

“I am speaking to you today in connection with the bloody, barbaric terrorist act, the victims of which were dozens of innocent, peaceful people,” Putin said in his first public remarks since the attack.

“All four perpetrators of the terrorist attack who shot and killed people have been detained. They were travelling towards Ukraine where, according to preliminary information, they had a window to cross the border,” the Kremlin leader said.

Russia’s FSB security service said earlier the assailants had been “in contact” with people in Ukraine as they tried to flee the country.

At least 115 people were killed by armed gunmen at the Crocus City Hall in a suburb on the northern edge of Moscow on Friday. The concert hall was set ablaze. The attack has been claimed by the Islamic State group but Russian authorities have not mentioned this.

“Terrorists, murderers, non-humans will face the unenviable fate of retribution and oblivion,” said Putin, who declared Sunday a day of national mourning across Russia.

Justify money spent on Ramadan feeding, APC challenges Kano

Justify money spent on Ramadan feeding, APC challenges Kano

The Kano State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has challenged the state government to prove the N6 billion it spent on the Ramadan feeding programme.

The challenge is coming after Governor Abba Yusuf, on Friday, expressed dismay over the ongoing Ramadan feeding programme in the Kano metropolis.

The state APC chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas, threw the challenge to the governor when he flagged off the distribution of palliatives to APC leaders and supporters in the state on Saturday.

The distribution of the food items was flagged off in Dawkins Kudu local government area of Kano State.

Abbas, who described the programme as a sham, asked the state government to show evidence that the food being provided was commensurate with what they spent on the programme.

He said, “We know the Federal Government, Dangote and BUA have provided palliatives, So, let them show evidence that they have spent the said amount on the programme.

“The grains we are distributing to our supporters were purchased through contribution from ourselves as we don’t have a government.”

In his remark, the Chief of Staff to the APC National Chairman, Muhammad Garba, who represented his nation at the occasion, said they purchased 5, 840 50kg bags of rice, 1,600 bags of millet, 2, 000 cartons of Spaghetti to give out to their supporters and other Kano People.

Garba explained that the National Chairman of the APC, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje coordinated the idea of the party palliative, with Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, and others contributed to purchasing the food items.

He said 484 wards of the state’s 44 local government areas will benefit from the gesture that will be given to all party supporters, social media influencers as well as other ordinary party staffers.

“Our National Chairman, Dr Umar Ganduje, is also planning to ensure that the palliative is sustained to cushion the effect of economic hardship, which is temporary with President Tinubu’s efforts in tackling the challenges.

*So, we felt it necessary to support our party supporters and leaders across the 484 wards, especially during this Ramadan period since we’re in a privileged position, “he added.
