Doma FC coach blames injury after draw with Gombe United

Coach of Doma United Football Club, Akinade Onigbinde, has blamed his team’s 1-1 draw against Gombe United on injury suffered by players as well as the absence of those who went abroad for trial.

Onigbinde disclosed this on Saturday during his post-match conference at Pantami Township Stadium, Gombe.

Our correspondent reports that the two Gombe-based teams are meeting this season for the second time.

Gombe United’s Nnaji scored in the 12th minute before Usman of Doma FC  equalised 64 minutes into the match.

According to him, the team would have done better, but the challenges hinged on injury and travel for better opportunities, adding that it harmed the output.

Onigbinde said, “It is not a good game. Our intention was to pick our three points at home, but I don’t know what we are backing. If you try to block a loophole here, there is another loophole there.

“We are having issues, and I believe we are going to get over it very soon. Some of our players are back sitting on the bench. By the time we start working on players with injury, our next game will not be like this.

“In every team, there must be a problem, and there must be a solution. That is the reason why we have to have 25 per cent quality players in the team. We have injured players on the ground, and some have travelled abroad for trials; this has really affected the team. I believe we will bounce back gradually, but all I know is that the team will not go down.”

While expressing hope that Doma FC will survive the current moment, he said, “I have assurance that the team will not go to relegation. Having a problem is a learning process. We are also learning. This is our second time in the premier league, and we cannot just say we are going to be among the top teams.

“This is a private team, and the man is trying his possible best that the team achieves something. We are trying, and we will bounce back. It’s just a matter of time, and before time goes out of hand, we will make it. We have a match at Wakpa. If we can play the way we did today, I believe we would pick something out of it.”

To the disappointment of fans, Onigbinde pleaded for more time to make amend, saying “I will just tell them sorry and that they should be patient with us, we would get back from where we stopped.”

Nigeria scales global aviation safety, security audit 

Nigeria has excelled in the just concluded International Civil Aviation Organisation Universal Safety Audit Programme Continuous Monitoring Approach-CMA.

The Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, Obiageli Orah, revealed this in a statement on Saturday evening.

“The objective of the USAP-CMA was to promote global aviation security through continuous auditing and monitoring of member states’ aviation security performance to enhance their aviation security compliance and oversight capabilities,” FAAN said.

The outcome of the audit was highlighted during the Audit Debrief session, chaired by Team Lead Callum Vine, on Friday, March 22, at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority headquarters located in the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

In attendance at the debrief were the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace, Emmanuel Meribole, who represented the Minister, and the acting Director General of the NCAA, Captain Chris Najomo.

According to FAAN, achieving aviation safety objective involved the regular and continuous collection and analysis of data about member states’ aviation security performance.

This includes evaluating the implementation level of critical elements within their aviation security oversight systems and assessing compliance with the Standards of Annex 17—Security and relevant security-related Standards of Annex 9 — Facilitation.

Commenting on the result, Vine, Nigeria has performed admirably across most key indicators, earning praise for its robust policies and agencies with clear mandates on airport security.

He commended the country for its swift response to identified deficiencies, noting the efficiency with which personnel addressed them without any complaints.

Vine further elaborated that the comprehensive report of the audit will be furnished to Nigeria by ICAO within 60 days.

Subsequently, the country will have 30 days to provide comments, followed by the expectation to submit a plan outlining steps to achieve compliance with the organization’s standards.

During the debriefing, the Managing Director of FAAN, Olubunmi Kuku, explained that the authority will utilize the audit results as a guiding roadmap for the ongoing enhancement of services provided to airport users and stakeholders.

She called upon all stakeholders to collaborate closely, exchange best practices, and remain vigilant in upholding the highest standards of security within the Nigerian aviation industry.

Kuku expressed gratitude to all government agencies, security bodies, government institutions, and heads of aviation agencies for their invaluable contributions to this remarkable achievement.

Sven-Goran Eriksson said he had fulfilled a lifelong dream by managing Liverpool Legends in a charity match against Ajax Legends at Anfield on Saturday.

The 76-year-old former England boss revealed in January he had “best case a year” to live after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

At the time the Swede, whose long career in club management included spells in charge of Manchester City and Lazio, revealed his lifelong love for Liverpool and how he had always wished to be manager of the club one day.

His dream became a reality on Saturday as Eriksson, alongside former Liverpool favourites Ian Rush, John Barnes and John Aldridge in the home dug-out, helped oversee a 4-2 win.

Eriksson said afterwards he had shed tears before kick-off, when he received a standing ovation from the crowd as he walked out onto the pitch, with fans singing the Liverpool anthem of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’.

“That will be a huge memory in life,” said Eriksson. “Absolutely beautiful.

“To sit on the bench for Liverpool, that’s been my dream my whole life. Now it happened, and it was a beautiful day in all meanings.

“The crowd, the game, the players, everything, fantastic, and thank you to Liverpool for giving me this opportunity, to invite me to such an important game – it’s not points but the importance of the game is incredible.

“It was full of emotions, tears coming. It’s been my dream club all my life — even when I had England, I also supported Liverpool, but I couldn’t say it at that time.

“It’s a good finish, to finish with Liverpool, it can’t be much better than that,” added Eriksson, who guided England to the quarter-finals of the 2002 and 2006 World Cups.

Liverpool were 2-0 down at half-time on Saturday before Kop-end goals from Gregory Vignal, Djibril Cisse, Nabil El Zhar and Fernando Torres turned the match in their favour.

The Reds were captained by Steven Gerrard, who played under Eriksson for England. “He (Gerrard) is the boss out there –- of course (he still has it)!” said Eriksson.

FRSC inaugurates taskforce to arrest truck drivers conveying humans

The Federal Road Safety Corps has inaugurated a Joint Task Force to arrest and prosecute trailer drivers conveying humans.

The move was to halt the rising cases of traffic infractions occasioned by the use of trailers to convey passengers.

The Joint Task Force comprised of the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, State Traffic Management Agencies, and operatives of the Corps.

Others drafted into the Task Force include representatives of the various transport unions.

A road traffic crash occurred on the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway on Monday night, which claimed 10 lives.

The crash that involved a DAF Trailer, occured as a result of excessive speed, overloading, and fatigue.

According to a statement signed by the FRSC spokesperson, Jonas Agwu, on Saturday, the inauguration of the JTF which was in phases commenced with the inauguration of the team to man Kaduna-Abuja Expressway on Saturday at Kakau Toll Gate, Kaduna State.

The Corps Marshal FRSC, Dauda Biu, emphasized the cardinal role of the JTF.

Biu, who was represented by the Assistant Corps Marshal, Federal Operations, Zubairu Mato said, “In the last couple of months, the highways have witnessed incidences of road traffic crashes involving trailers loaded with goods, animals and persons.

“In most of these crashes, several innocent people who were seen petching on top of goods in such vehicles were killed, and the commodities being conveyed also damaged extensively.

“In order to reverse the ugly trend, the JTF members were directed to embark on effective special patrol operations as well as conduct Mobile Court operations on the commissioned route. They are to also ensure immediate prosecution of apprehended offenders.”

The exercise would be carried out across major corridors nationwide.

Consequently, owners of trailers were admonished to warn their drivers against this traffic violation as the corps would not spare anyone caught in the act.

The statement further revealed that a fatal crash occurred on Saturday in Rinji, Toro Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

The crash involved a Mercedes Benz with registration number AK808AA and a Volkswagen Opel Vectra also with registration number TFB675RC.

Out of the eight persons in the vehicles, four victims, comprising of one female adult and three male adults, were killed while the remaining 4 victims survived the crash with different degrees of injuries.

The FRSC rescue team recovered the sum of N1,532,100 belonging to the victims.

Imo gunmen kill two policemen, bomb patrol vehicle

No fewer than two policemen attached to MOPOL 18, Owerri lost their lives when gunmen attacked their patrol vehicle along old Gariki Road Okigwe in Imo State on Saturday.

The officers were ambushed and attacked in Owerri while on patrol duty.

The gunmen suspected to be members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra and its affiliate, Eastern Security Network, reportedly threw dynamite on the officers’ patrol vehicle and engaged them in a protracted gunfight.

It was gathered that four others sustained multiple injuries during the incident.

The state police spokesman, Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident.

He said, “The officers were ambushed in the early hours of today, 23/03/2024 while on patrol duties along old Gariki Road Okigwe by the disgruntled elements who threw dynamite on the officer’s patrol vehicle and engaged them in a protracted gunfight.

“In the process, two officers paid the ultimate price while four others survived the attack.”

Okoye said the state Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, condemned the attack.

He said, “The state Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, has condemned the attack and gruesome murder of personnel of Mopol 18, Owerri, by gunmen suspected to be members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate Eastern Security Network (ESN). ”

He added that the Commissioner with Commander MOPOL 18 and 64, immediately led operatives of the Command’s Special Tactical Unit to the crime scene for on-the-spot assessment.

He stated further that the officers were tasked to collaborate with other security agencies and hunt down the hoodlums responsible for the attack.

This attack is coming barely a week after a Nigerian Army commander, three officers, and 12 soldiers were ambushed and killed in Delta State.

The soldiers, serving with the 181 Amphibious Battalion, were said to be on a peace-keeping mission to quell community clashes in Bomadi Local Government of Delta State when they were killed.

Rivers faults lawmakers on assembly service commission law

The Rivers State Government has faulted the State House of Assembly for passing the Rivers State House of Assembly Service Commission Amendment Bill, 2024 into law

Recall that of the 27 pro-Wike lawmakers, 24 who were present at Friday’s emergency plenary had enacted a new law without the governor’s assent overriding Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The action of the lawmakers followed an observation by the House Majority Leader, Major Jack, that the Rivers State House of Assembly Service Commission amendment law which was sent to the governor on February 19, 2024 had yet to be assented to by Fubara.

But the Chief of Staff, Rivers State Government House, Edison Ehie, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Saturday said the lawmakers lacked the powers they intend to assume.

Ehie stated, “The Rivers State House of Assembly lacks the powers, legal or otherwise, to remove the power of appointment of the Chairman and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly Service Commission from the governor and vest that power on themselves.

“The provision in the Rivers State House of Assembly Service Commission (Amendment) Law, 2024 seeking to vest that power on the House is in clear contravention of the 1999 Constitution, and therefore, a nullity in the eyes of the law. See the case of MacFoy v UAC (1961) 3 All ER 1169 where the court held that you cannot put something on nothing and expect it to stand.”

Fubara’s aide recalled that on Thursday, February 15, 2024, during its 109th sitting, the House passed into law, the Rivers State House of Assembly Service Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2024.

The bill, according to him, repealed the Rivers State House of Assembly Service Commission (Amendment) Law, No. 3 of 2006 and further amended the Rivers State House of Assembly Service Commission Law of 1999.

Ehie explained that the provision in the Rivers State House of Assembly Service Commission (Amendment) Law, 2024, seeking to vest that power on the House is in clear contravention of the 1999 Constitution, and therefore, a nullity in the eyes of the law.

Ehie further said the Rivers State House of Assembly Service Commission was established by the Rivers State House of Assembly Service Commission Law of 1999, saying Section 2 of the law provides that :

“The Commission shall comprise a Chairman and four other members who shall in the opinion of the Speaker be persons of unquestionable integrity.

“The Chairman and members of the Commission shall be appointed by the Rivers State House of Assembly acting on the advice and recommendation of the House Committee of Selection and shall in making the appointment be guided by the geographical spread and diversity of the people of Rivers State.”

He said that the above section was repealed by the Rivers State House of Assembly Service Commission (Amendment) Law No 3, 2006, saying that in  Sections 2 and 3, the Amendment Law provides that:

“S. 2 “Section 2 of the Principal Law is amended by repealing subsection (1) and substituting the following subsection:

“(1) The Commission shall comprise a Chairman and four other members.

3 “Section 2(2) of the Principal Law is amended by repealing subsection (2) and substituting the following subsection:

“(2) The Chairman and members of the Commission shall be appointed by the Governor subject to the confirmation by the House of Assembly and shall in making the appointment be guided by the geographical spread and diversity of the people of Rivers State.”

Continuing, he said, “The first issue to consider is the Constitutional power of the Governor. Section 5(2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 provides that the executive powers of the State shall be vested in the Governor of that State.” Further, Section 176(2) provides that: “The Governor of a State shall be the Chief Executive of that State.

“This follows that the governor is the Chief Executive Officer of the State Government and by the powers vested in him, is responsible for making appointments into various executive bodies, subject to the provisions of the 1999 Constitution and other statutes.

“All commissions and other parastatals are executive bodies under the control of the Governor. The House of Assembly Service Commission is an executive body and as such, the Chairman and members can only be appointed by the governor.

“The House of Assembly has no powers to make any appointment into an executive body as no statutory body is under the control of the legislature.
