NACC recommits to promoting SMEs growth

The President of the Nigerian American Chamber of Commerce, Mrs Adebola Williams, has reaffirmed the chamber’s dedication to fostering the growth of Small and Medium Enterprises, to ensure their sustainability and compliance with international standards.

She stated this at a press briefing on Monday for the forthcoming 2024 edition of the Africa Foods & Products Exhibition themed “Actualising Sustainable Economic Growth’ – “Think Global, Be Local” which is scheduled to take place in April in Lagos.

Williams, said, “The NACC facilitates bilateral trade between the USA and Nigeria through networking, advocacy, and investments.

“Our focus is on SMEs and micro-enterprises, providing platforms for business connections, profile building, and exploring global opportunities. We emphasise the transformation of Nigerian products into finished goods for export, aiming to maximise revenue.

“The chamber engages with policymakers to address business growth concerns and act as a link between Nigerian and American businesses,” Williams added.

Also, the Acting Director-General of NACC, Ms Wofai Samuel, highlighted the platform as one that would enable Nigerian businesses and SMEs across Africa at large to foster partnerships with similar businesses operating across their niches, connect with importers, producers, suppliers, distributors, and retailers.

“The opportunity reinforces Nigeria’s position as the biggest market in Africa and will create new entry paths for emerging products.

“We look forward to the influx of visitors not just in Nigeria, but in other parts of the continent and the success of this edition will re-echo the Chamber’s position as indeed foremost for promoting intra-African trade,” she averred.

On his part, the Chairman of the African Foods & Products Exhibition Committee, Ayo Stuffman, remarked that the exhibition would be a platform for Nigerian businesses, both members and non-members, to showcase their products.

According to Stuffman, it will also provide SMEs with insights from established businesses to improve their practices.

He noted, “This underscores the vital role chambers play in economic development. Collaboration among stakeholders like policymakers, industry leaders, and organisations is essential to creating a favourable business environment for growth and economic contribution.”

The Vice Chairman of the African Foods & Products Exhibition Committee, Mrs Yemisi Ogundipe, added, “The theme is apt considering the current situation of the Nigerian economy. The chamber has identified that many businesses are facing challenges, possibly due to government policies and other factors. It is essential to ensure the sustainability of businesses, as they are a crucial component of the economy.”

She stressed the importance of SMEs thriving, noting that many disappear within five years.

“The NACC aims to make them sustainable and uses the exhibition to inform business owners about the Nigerian economy’s current state and how to achieve gradual, sustainable growth.

“As a chamber, we urge Nigerian business owners to think globally due to foreign investment interests in our economy,” she declared.

Ogundipe encouraged businesses to embrace global trade practices, as local mindsets may not be accepted globally.

Private sector makes $236bn illegal profit from labour annually – Report

The private sector generates $236bn in illegal profits annually, a new study by the International Labour Organisation has revealed.

According to the report titled “Profits and Poverty: The Economics of Forced Labour”, there has been a 37 per cent rise in illegal profits from forced labour since 2014.

It stated that the total amount of illegal profits from forced labour had risen by $64bn (37 per cent) since 2014, fuelled by growth in the number of people forced into labour and higher profits generated from the exploitation of victims.

The report estimated that traffickers and criminals were generating close to US$10,000 per victim, up from US$8,269 (adjusted for inflation) a decade ago.

“Total annual illegal profits from forced labour are highest in Europe and Central Asia ($84bn), followed by Asia and the Pacific ($62bn), the Americas ($52bn), Africa ($20bn), and the Arab States ($18bn),” it stated.

According to the ILO, when illegal profits are expressed per victim, annual illegal profits are highest in Europe and Central Asia, followed by the Arab States, the Americas, Africa and Asia and the Pacific.

It further stated that forced commercial sexual exploitation accounts for more than two-thirds (73 per cent) of the total illegal profits, despite accounting for only 27 per cent of the total number of victims of privately imposed labour.

“These numbers are explained by the huge difference in per victim profits between forced commercial sexual exploitation and other forms of non-state forced labour exploitation – $27,252 profits per victim for the former against $3,687 profits per victim for the latter.

“After forced commercial sexual exploitation, the sector with the highest annual illegal profits from forced labour is industry, at $35bn, followed by services ($20.8bn), agriculture ($5.0bn), and domestic work ($2.6bn),” the report indicated.

It explained that those illegal profits were the wages that rightfully belonged in the pockets of workers but instead remained in the hands of their exploiters, because of their coercive practices.

The Director-General of the ILO, Gilbert Houngbo, said, “Forced labour perpetuates cycles of poverty and exploitation and strikes at the heart of human dignity. We now know that the situation has only gotten worse. The international community must urgently come together to take action to end this injustice.”

He noted that there were 27.6 million people engaged in forced labour daily in 2021.

“This figure translates to 3.5 people for every thousand people in the world. Between 2016 and 2021, the number of people in forced labour increased by 2.7 million,” he asserted.

“People in forced labour are subject to multiple forms of coercion, the deliberate and systematic withholding of wages being amongst the most common. Forced labour perpetuates cycles of poverty and exploitation and strikes at the heart of human dignity. We now know that the situation has only got worse.

“The international community must urgently come together to take action to end this injustice, safeguard workers’ rights, and uphold the principles of fairness and equality for all,” Houngbo declared.

The report stressed the urgent need for investment in enforcement measures to stem illegal profit flows and hold perpetrators accountable.

Meanwhile, it recommended strengthening legal frameworks, providing training for enforcement officials, extending labour inspection into high-risk sectors, and better coordination between labour and criminal law enforcement.

According to the report, forced labour cannot be ended through law enforcement measures alone, enforcement actions must be part of a comprehensive approach that prioritizes addressing root causes and safeguarding victims.

Navy intercepts 193 bags of narcotics, arrests suspect

The Nigerian Navy has intercepted 193 bags of cannabis sativa and arrested a suspect, Asamani Emmanuel, along the Badagry waterways.

According to a press statement released to our correspondent on Tuesday, Commander NNS BEECROFT, Commodore Rafiu Oladejo, while briefing newsmen, disclosed that the contraband and suspect were intercepted by the NNS BEECROFT patrol team through the effective utilisation of the state-of-the-art Maritime Domain Awareness Facility, the Falcon Eye Alignment.

He stated that the NNS patrol team intercepted the large wooden boat laden with narcotics, comprising a total of 193 bags of cannabis sativa, weighing about 7,443kg on March 16, 2024.

He said, “The Nigerian Navy Ship BEECROFT, in furtherance of the ongoing Operation Water Guard, intercepted a large wooden boat laden with a total of 193 bags of cannabis sativa, weighing about 7,443 kilogrammes, and arrested suspect Mr Asamani Emmanuel along the Badagry waterways on March 16, 2024.

“The arrests were made possible through the effective utilisation of the Nigerian Navy Maritime Domain Awareness facilities, Falcon Eye Alignment, and Regional Maritime Awareness Capability Centre, as well as human intelligence.

“This effort is in line with the strategic directive of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, to maintain a credible presence along Lagos waterways and adjoining creeks to rid the maritime environment of all forms of crime and criminality.”

Commodore Oladejo further warned perpetrators to desist from such acts, promising that the navy would not stop pursuing culprits found guilty of such activities.

He also added that the narcotics and the suspect have been handed over to the appropriate agency for further investigation.

“This successful arrest of a large quantity of narcotics underscores the unwavering commitment of NNS BEECROFT to curtailing the spread and use of illicit drugs among the teeming youth, which negatively affects their health and threatens national security.

“I hereby warn perpetrators of illicit drugs to desist from such acts as NNS BEECROFT will not rest on its laurels in pursuing all criminal elements operating within its area of operation.

“The arrested narcotics and the suspect were handed over to the officials of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Marine Command today, March 26, 2024, for further investigation and possible prosecution.”

48 repentant cultists surrender arms in Ogun

No fewer than 48 repentant cultists in the Sagamu area of Ogun State have surrendered their arms to the Nigeria Police Force and renounced their membership in the various cult groups they belonged to.

The ceremony to profile the repentant cultists and take stock of the arms and ammunition was held at the Palace of the Akarigbo of Remoland, Oba Adewale Ajayi, in the Sagamu Local Government Area of the state on Tuesday.

According Metro had reported in January that two cult groups, Neo Black Movement, popularly called Aye, and the National Association of Airlords, also known as Eiye Confraternity, Sagamu chapter, wrote letters of apologies to the Akarigbo of Remoland, asking him and other traditional rulers in Remoland to forgive them of their wrongdoings.

The two groups had, in a viral letter, pleaded for mercy and promised to abide by the laws of the country.

While the letter from the Eiye Confraternity was dated December 22, 2023, that of Aye was dated December 26, 2023.

Weapons submitted by the cultists, who have promised to turn a new leaf, include one pump action gun, four double barrels, seven single barrels, two English pistols, four locally made pistols, and 35 cartridges.

Speaking at the event, the state’s Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, said the approach of the police to engage in moral persuasion as a way of curbing the incessant cult crises that have ravaged the part of the state led the cultists to renounce their membership and surrender their arms.

Alamutu, while urging the repentant cultists not to go back to their old ways, stressed that the police would also work with the Ogun State government and the traditional rulers to convert them into an Anti-Cultism Vanguard that would preach the dangers of cultism to others still engaged in the act.

The CP said, “You will recall that last year, this community witnessed disturbing incidences where cultists were on rampage and disturbing the peace of the community that I had to partially relocate to this community.

“It was the persistent nature of this crisis that brought the idea of having a second look and approach to the crisis and we thought of using moral persuasion and engagement to see if we can get results and thank God this is the outcome.

“By giving them this Olive branch, the idea is for them to turn a new leaf. I have had a closed-door meeting with Kabiyesi on how we can engage these youths. Now that we have convinced them that the right thing to do is hard work, we are going to see how we can assist them to be of use to themselves and be our vanguard so that others will have a reason to embrace peace.”

In his reaction, Oba Ajayi said the amnesty for the cultists was a result of several engagements and discussions during when many of the cultists regretted their nefarious acts and promised to turn a new leaf.

The monarch added, “Not satisfied with the killings and disturbance of these cultists in the town, the community re-strategised and moved against them. The heat was so much that some of them were even forced to leave the town, but they continued to beg, sending emissaries that they were ready to turn a new leaf.

“We have engaged them and told them point-blank that cultism is not the way forward, that they will only ruin their lives, ruin their family names and the plans of God for their lives.

“We told them to submit their weapons and stay away from cultism, and we have promised to integrate them into the society. It is an ongoing exercise, and we hope that their colleagues in other parts of Remoland and Ogun State as a whole will draw a vital lesson and follow suit as well.”

He thanked Governor Dapo Abiodun, security agencies, and the Sagamu Security Committee for working round the clock to ensure the success of the amnesty deal for the former cultists.

He begged the residents of the community to show the repentant cultists love and support and not treat them as outcasts.

NFIU uncovers IPOB’s UK, US cells, $160,000 payments

The Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit has uncovered 27 cells belonging to the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra in 22 countries across the globe, including the United State of America and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The NFIU said the US and the UK house the largest numbers of these IPOB cells per country, with seven and six operating IPOB cells respectively in both countries.

Details of the development were revealed in a newsletter exposing the funding of terror activities in Nigeria by IPOB, bandits, and other terror groups through global crowdfunding and on sports betting platforms.

The Federal Government had in 2017 proscribed IPOB and designated the self-determination group a terrorist organisation. Its leader, Nnmadi Kanu, is currently being tried on terrorism charges by the government.

The NFIU, in the document, titled “Counter Terrorism Financial Newsletter,” linked the running of IPOB to 54 individuals across the globe.

The document revealed: “The NFIU confirmed that the diaspora affiliates of the IPOB group have spread over 22 countries across the globe. Further analysis exposed 27 entities across the globe registered in the name of the group, the US and the UK had the highest number of registrations, having seven and six registered entities, respectively.

“The analysis further indicates that the group has several bank accounts in different countries where funds are being received from various contributors with the narrations ‘Monthly Dues, Services and for ESN’, among others, then later disbursed for various operations.

“It was confirmed that one of the major sources of revenue for the group is crowdfunding by several individuals abroad, mostly Nigerians.

“It was observed that over $160,000 was disbursed to Transmission, Media, and Broadcasting companies in Bulgaria, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. The analysis profiled the leader of the group, his addresses, and mobile numbers abroad with other 53 individuals associated with the dissident group. The report was forwarded to Law Enforcement for further investigation.”

The NFIU further revealed that a betting platform, simply identified as ‘XC’, filed a Suspicious Transaction Report on a 24-year Nigerian customer from North-Central, Nigeria.

“This 24-year-old from Nigeria’s North-Central region received over N350,000 in his betting wallet, believed to be ransom money from a kidnapping,” the NFIU said.

 In another case, the financial intelligence unit exposed a terrorist attempting to evade being detected. It noted that the individual made structured cash withdrawals from different Automated Teller Machines and purchased flight tickets to high-risk areas, using credit cards.

The NFIU explained that whenever the individual exceeded his withdrawal limit, he would adopt alternative methods of travel.

 “The terrorist then attempted suspicious transfers exceeding €1,000 to a local charity with potential links to terrorism. These transactions, along with others for luxury goods and escort services, raised red flags,” the newsletter stated.

The NFIU urged law enforcement agencies to investigate transactions by individuals linked to known terrorists or financiers; unauthorised tax collection or forced donations in terrorism-prone areas and Bureau de Change operators facilitating transfers within suspected networks.

 Other areas the unit wants security agencies to beam their searchlights are multiple cash deposits in bank accounts; Point of Sale operators receiving large deposits followed by cash withdrawals; money transfers from Nigeria to high-risk countries; recruitment of individuals to open multiple bank accounts; and financial transfers to charities linked to terrorism.

Identify members involved in anti-party activities, PDP tells state chairmen

The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, on Tuesday, directed the chairmen of the 36 state chapters and the Federal Capital Territory to identify their members involved in anti-party activities during the 2023 general elections.

The PDP National Organising Secretary, Umar Bature, during a meeting of the National Working Committee with state chairmen in Abuja on Tuesday, said such erring members should be identified so they could be sanctioned.

Many members of the party, shortly after the 2023 presidential election, requested sanctions against certain members due to their alleged involvement in anti-party activities.

Over the past 11 months, the National Working Committee of the party has shown reluctance to take action on this matter.

However, speaking on Tuesday, Bature said, “After the elections, we expected the state chapters to give us their reports, that is the post-2023 election reports. A lot of the states have not submitted their reports and we need those reports to be compiled for the next NEC meeting.

“A lot of agitations are coming from party members, suspend this, suspend that, you are the ones that are in charge of those states. You are to tell us who was involved in anti-party activities and who did not; and based on that, the NEC will take a decision. Write to us and tell us what transpired, no matter what happened.”

Bature also said the Tuesday meeting was to review the tenure of 26 state chairmen, whose tenures had expired.

He stated, “We are here to review the tenure of about 26 state chairmen, in terms of ward, local government and state. If you recall most of the current executives in the states were elected four years ago, where congresses were conducted on a staggered basis due to the COVID-19 issues.

“We have about four or five states that their tenures have expired from the ward to the state, that is Edo, Bayelsa, Gombe and Rivers states. There are others that are staggered. So, in order not to create a vacuum or go into a crisis that is why we have called this meeting.

“Also, we have issues and a crisis in these states; so, we decided to call you for this meeting to interact with you on the way forward pending when the NEC will sit and decide on all these.”

PDP National Organising Secretary charged the state chairmen to,

Senators redeem N109m pledge, road construction begins

The Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, on Tuesday, flagged off the construction of 5.5-kilometre asphalt road linking Tudun-Biri village in the Igabi Local Government area of the state to the Kaduna International Airport.

The development comes over three months after the community was accidentally bombed by the Nigerian Army on December 3, 2023.

The incident claimed the lives of over 100 villagers with many others injured.

The road construction was part of the measures to alleviate the suffering of the victims.

Also, The According gathered that the 109 members of the Nigerian Senate have finally fulfilled their pledge to donate their December 2023 salaries, amounting to N109m, to the victims.

Our correspondent, who was at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House on Monday where the rescued Kuriga schoolchildren were handed over to the state governor in a brief ceremony, gathered that the Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Senator Lawal Usman, presented the N109m to the state government.

Apart from the construction of the access road to the village, the government is also undertaking the construction of a Skills Acquisition Centre and Modern Primary Healthcare Centre to serve the Tudun Biri people and neighboring villages affected by the ill-fated bombing.

The governor, during the inauguration ceremony, said the project would open up the development of the agrarian community as well as link Tudun Biri and other neighboring communities to the markets where they could easily sell their farm produce.

He told the gatherings that one of the most important agendas of the government was the revitalisation of rural economy in the state.

The governor said, “Two days after the unfortunate drone accident, I promised the people of Tudun Biri that by the grace of God, we will improve the infrastructure of the village, build road, hospital as well as skills acquisition center for them.  By the grace of God, today we are here to fulfill our promise.

“One of the most important agenda of our government is the revitalisation of the rural economy. The road we are breaking ground for today, which is about 5.5 kilometres, will certainly reduce the travel time of the people of this community to the town. It will also ease the movement of goods.

“Most of the people in this village are farmers and artisans. So, the road will help them to move their produce from Tudun Biri and link them up with the markets.

“We are also doing the groundbreaking for the construction of a skills acquisition centre for most of the young men and women of this community, who are determined and willing to be financially independent so that they can learn different skills.

“As a government, job creation is one of the most important focuses of our government, because we believe it will reduce unemployment and also reduce the poverty level in the state.”

The governor also commended the people of Tudun Biri for their patience and cooperation with the government during and after their trying moments while pledging that the community would not be let down.

Earlier in his remarks on behalf of the community, the District Head of Rigasa, Alhaji Aminu Idris, expressed appreciation to the governor for fulfilling his promises and appealed to the government to also link Tudun with Buruku with similar road project to assist other neighbouring communities.

Operators urge FG to prioritise EVs, CNGs adoption

Experts have called on the Federal Government to prioritise the adoption of sustainable transport solutions to address environmental challenges and promote economic development.

The Chief Executive Officer of Egoras Technology, Ugoji Harry, told The According that with the increasing concerns over climate change and air pollution, the adoption of sustainable transport options had become paramount.

“We urge the Federal Government to embrace sustainable transport solutions such as electric vehicles, public transportation systems, Compressed Natural Gas and cycling infrastructure to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate the impacts of climate change,” Harry noted.

According to the World Bank’s Climate Risk Country Profile for Nigeria, the country has witnessed a rise of approximately 1°C in its mean temperature since the pre-industrial era.

He said the Federal Government could play a crucial role in building a more resilient and environmentally responsible future.

Harry revealed plans to roll out a blockchain-powered electric vehicle charging station, Egostation, and a homemade electric vehicle.

“Together, we can create a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for all. Recently, we announced plans to also launch the first ever made-in-Nigeria electric vehicle, the APEX 28 in April. This was manufactured at Egoras’ factory in Port Harcourt,” he stated.

In February, the Minister of Transportation, Saidu Alkali, announced plans to allocate budgetary resources aimed at fostering green technologies within the transportation sector.

He said the ministry was determined to address pressing energy challenges and promote sustainable development in the country.

Last year, the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative said N100bn under the palliative program had been earmarked to facilitate the deployment of CNG buses across the country.

The initiative said there was ongoing commissioning of several CNG conversion centres in key States across the country including Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna, Ogun, and Rivers,

The Lagos Chairman of the Amalgamated Union of App-based Transporters of Nigeria, Jayesimi Azeez, requested that the state government assist in converting their vehicles to CNG.

He said the conversion would not only contribute to environmental sustainability but also reduce operational costs for drivers.

Harry noted that the high conversion costs, ranging from N700,000 to N800,000 per vehicle, posed a significant barrier for many drivers.

Indicted publisher threatens to sue FG

The publisher of Kaduna-based Desert Herald Newspaper, Tukur Mamu, has written to the Attorney General of the Federation, demanding a retraction of his profiling and designation as a terrorist financier.

This was contained in a letter dated March 25, 2024, written on his behalf by his lawyer, J.J. Usman (SAN), addressed to the Attorney General of the Federation which acknowledged copy was sighted by our correspondent in Kaduna on Tuesday.

The According reports that the Federal Government, through the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit,  last week released a document designating 15 entities, including nine individuals and six Bureau De Change operators and firms, as terrorism financiers.

The NFIU document was titled “Designation of Individuals and Entities for March 18, 2024.”

In the document, the NFIU named Mamu among the terrorism financiers, referencing his alleged role in the Abuja-Kaduna train attack in March 2022.

According to the document, Mamu “participated in the financing of terrorism by receiving and delivering ransom payments over the sum of $200,000 US in support of ISWAP terrorists for the release of hostages of the Abuja-Kaduna train attack.”

As of July 2022, Mamu, who is now in detention, was Media Consultant to the controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi.

Last week, Gumi also faulted Mamu’s designation by the NFIU as a terrorism financier.

On Monday, the Federal Government warned Gumi against what it described as reckless statements, threatening that the Islamic cleric could be arrested.

Mamu’s counsel, in his letter to the AGF, contented that the “Nigerian Sanctions Committee lacks the statutory mandate to pronounce on, and to designate Mr. Tukur Mohammed Mamu as a Terrorist Financier.”

Consequently, according to the letter, the AGF was given a seven-day ultimatum to retract Mamu’s designation as a terrorism financier.

The lawyer questioned why the Federal Government would rush to designate Mamu as a terrorism financier when the criminal case filed against him by the AGF was still in court.

He said it was “lamentable that  while the case was still pending in court, the social media was saturated by a publication allegedly emanating from and authorised by your good office.”

“As at the time of this missive, no court of competent jurisdiction in Nigeria has designated our client as such.

“It is common knowledge that the administration of the criminal justice system in Nigeria is not only antithetic to but also forbids media trial in whatever guise.

“We vehemently condemn the actions of the Nigerian Sanctions Committee same being a violation of the rule of natural justice and prejudicial to our client, who is undergoing trial, and whose trial is still pending in Suit No: FHCIABJ/CR/96/2023

“The Nigerian Sanctions Committee lacks the statutory mandate to pronounce on, and to designate Mr. Tukur Mohammed Mamu as a terrorist financier; even when it is a notorious fact that Mr. Tukur Mohammed Mamu is undergoing trial. It is so, particularly that the court has not made any pronouncement detailing him to be one.

“On the basis of the aforesaid, we demand in very clear and unequivocal terms: the immediate retraction of the said publication within seven days from the receipt of this letter dated 25th March 2024.

“Failure to comply with our client’s demand, we will have no hesitation in seeking redress in the Court of law for the ventilation of our client’s grievances.”

Fulani group backs efforts against insecurity

A Fulani cattle herders group, Kulen Allah Cattle Rearers Association of Nigeria, has keyed into the current war against insecurity bedevilling major parts of the country.

This resolve comes amidst the raging allegations levelled against the Fulani cattle herders as the major perpetrators of banditry and other related crimes across the country.

“KACRAN reaffirms its unwavering commitment to assisting the federal, state, and local governments in seeking lasting solutions to Nigeria’s security challenges,” the National President of the association, Khalil Mohammed Bello, told Arewa According in Maiduguri, over the weekend.

“We call upon our members to extend their full support and cooperation to the fight against insecurity, and for us all as Nigerians to achieve our collective goals of peace, unity, and development,” he admonished.

Bello also urged members of the association nationwide to refrain from engaging in demonstrations and to foster peace and unity within the country.

“While peaceful protests are a constitutional right, there exists the risk of such events being hijacked by malicious individuals seeking to cause disorder and damage,” the cattle rearers’ leader observed.

“In the light of recent disturbing events, KACRAN, as an organisation is committed to harmony and progress, and strongly condemns any acts of vandalism and lawlessness,” he stated, maintaining, “Such behaviours pose threats to the nation’s fragile security and contradicts our values as a civilised society.”

The Fulani herders’ leader urged Nigerians,  irrespective of ethnic or religious backgrounds, to stand in solidarity with the government at all levels in its war against insecurity and its development policies and programmes.
