Police Harrasment: Court Grants Lawyer Bail

0

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting in Apo, has granted a lawyer, Mrs Bukola Ibitade, bail.

Ibitade and her boss, Barrister Victor Giwa, were accused by the police to have forged a letterhead, belonging to a renown Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Awa Kalu.

But Awa Kalu, in a letter to the Inspector General of Police, Mr Katode. Egebtolun, put a lie to the allegation of the police against Ibitade amd Giwa.

Despite the letter of Prof. Awa Kalu to the Inspector-General of Police, formally distancing himself from the allegation of forgery and impersonation against Giwa and Ibitade, the police have gone ahead to press charge against Giwa.

Chief Kalu, in a letter to the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, had said his letterhead was never forged and that he had not at anytime lodged any complaint to the police about forgery of his document.

Professor Kalu, in a letter dated May 30, 2025, addressed to the Inspector General of Police, clarified that he neither filed a complaint nor reported Mr. Giwa for allegedly forging his firm’s letterhead.

The letter comes in response to Charge No. CR/150/25 instituted by the police, in which Giwa and Ibitade were accused of forging the official letterhead of “Awa U. Kalu (SAN) and Partners” — formerly “Awa U. Kalu (SAN) and Associates” — to communicate with the Attorney General of the Federation.

Prof. Kalu wrote, “I wish to inform you that the internet is agog with news that a charge is preferred against the above named gentleman, indicating that he forged my official headed paper.

“Please note that I have neither filed a complaint nor have I incidented a report at any Police Station in Nigeria indicating that Mr. Victor Giwa forged my official headed paper.”

During the hearing of the motion for bail for Ibitade, her Counsel, Ogbu Aboje,
urged the court to grant her bail on liberal term.

According to him, the defendant is a lawyer and cannot jump bail.

“We have a motion dated October 8, 2025 and filed on the same date. The motion seeks an order to admit the 2nd defendant to bail pending the hearing and determination of the case.

“We are seeking an order of the court to admit the second defendant to bail on very liberal condition. We urge the court to dismiss the counter affidavit of the prosecution and grant them defendant bail”, he argued.

The prosecution, Mr Eristo Asaph, prayed the court to turn down the motion for bail.

He submitted, “We are opposing the bail application and have filed counter affidavit deposed to, by one Clement Akpan and the counter affidavit is accompanied by one exhibit marked “NPF A” and it’s also accompanied by a written address. We urge my lord to refuse the application”.

In his ruling, Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie, granted Ibitade bail in the sum of N30m with two sureties who must be level 16 civil servants.

According to the court, the sureties must be able to produce the defendant at every sitting of the. Court amd must have a valid ID card.

The clarification by Prof. Kalu significantly undercuts the foundation of the forgery allegation, which reportedly hinges on the unauthorised use of his firm’s name and letterhead.

His statement meant there was no formal accusation from the primary party whose identity was allegedly misused.

Also, Victor Giwa had in a letter to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, dated 23rd May, 2025, asked the IGP to probe the allegation of financial inducement to charge him to court.

Specifically, Giwa called Mr Egbetokun, to investigate the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, legal services of the Nigeria Police, Chiozoba Oyakhire Ehiede, AIG Aina Emmanuel and Ms Asabe Waziri, over allegation of frivolous xharge filed against him and one other.

He called on the IGP to probe the connection between the AIG, Legal Services of the Nigeria Police and Asabe Waziri, a staff of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.

‘Here’s What I Told Peter Mbah When I Visited Him Months Ago’ – Keyamo

0

Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, has praised Peter Mbah, the governor of Enugu State, for switching from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Mbah reportedly declared his defection to the APC on Tuesday, stating that Enugu needed to join with the federal administration for quicker growth.

In a tweet on his 𝕏 handle on Tuesday, Keyamo responded to the news by revealing that he warned the governor during a visit to Enugu a few months ago that it would be a miracle for anyone to defeat him in future elections.

APC was his natural home, he said, and he commended Mbah for his progressive agenda.

“I said it would be a miracle for anyone to beat you in future elections when I came to Enugu a few months ago to launch Enugu Air,” Keyamo wrote. We are grateful that you have teamed up with President Bola Tinubu to further the advancement and solidarity of Enugu and the Southeast.

The minister assured Mbah that the decision will increase his support base in the state and further referred to him as the “undisputed leader of Enugu APC”.

Political strategist Prof. Udenta Udenta has called the governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) defecting to the All Progressives Congress a show of fear and lack of courage.

When answering questions during an interview on Arise Television on Tuesday, Udenta reportedly said this.

Dismissing claims that the PDP was disintegrating, the Alliance for Democracy’s (AD) founding national secretary emphasized that the party is still powerful and politically active.

He insisted that rather than individual politicians leaving the party for personal gain, the party’s identity and power were derived from the people.

Udenta added that he had previously based his assessment of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s possible comeback to politics only on political factors and not on insider knowledge.

“When I talked about the former president’s prospects, I didn’t speak as a spokesperson,” he said.

He has not disclosed the election’s political background. Even his membership in the party is merely for him to explain its standing.

“If you choose to use the PDP as a platform, the party is thriving despite a change in the upper echelons of the political elite, the governors, who for whatever reason decide to say, okay, we’re going to call it a day, we’re going to join the APC where we think their gluttony will power our own ambition.”

Wike: You Can’t Deny the Developments in FCT, Even If You Hate Tinubu

0

Despite the animosity toward President Bola Tinubu, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has said that detractors cannot ignore the continuous change in the nation’s capital.

According to reports, Wike gave a speech on Tuesday when the Dakibiyu District commissioned access roads in Sector Center B.

Nigerians will witness something they have never seen in Abuja at Tinubu’s third anniversary, according to the former governor of Rivers State.

Nigeria would soon reach its promised land, Wike said, urging Nigerians to have patience with Tinubu’s administration.

“Nigerians will witness something they have never witnessed before by next year, which is Mr. President’s third year anniversary,” he stated.

Therefore, I’m asking all Nigerians to have patience because we will reach the promised land and, thanks to Mr. President, the story will be told differently.

The ceremony’s director explained that the best way to determine whether something is going well is to look at it sector by sector. Since each person must present his or her own report card, let’s begin in Abuja.

Regarding FCT, regardless of how you may feel about losing the election or how much you may despise others, someone must win since there is no GG in elections; one person will win and the other will lose.

Can you fool yourself into believing that nothing is happening in the FCT, even if you despise Mr. President? Of course not.

That is what democracy’s benefits are all about. “From there, you will also know what Mr. President is doing in other areas, see where we are either to flag off or to commission.”

Electricity Bill Hike Sparks Protest in Umuahia: N10,000 Becomes N60,000

0

The Enugu Electricity Power Distribution Company (EEDC) headquarters on Bende Road was invaded by some 1,000 irate Umuahia residents on Tuesday in protest of the company’s exorbitant electricity prices.

Additionally, they marched to the Abia State Government House in Umuahia to urge Governor Alex Otti to step in and address the issue of “crazy bills.”

According to the demonstrators, who claimed to have traveled from various locations inside the capital of Abia State, their September 2025 energy rates were more than 400% more than their September 2025 prices.

They claim that each apartment was billed between N40,000 and N60,000 or more, including sections without power. This is a huge rise from the N10,000 to N12,000 they paid last month.

With placards in hand and songs of sadness, the Umuahia electricity users declared their refusal to pay the new bills and accused EEDC of trying to eradicate them.

“This month, they handed me N45,000 instead of the N12,000 I received last month. How am I going to pay these bills as a small business owner? According to Mr. Kelechi Anamekwe, who lives on Enugu Road in Umuahia.

Workers at EEDC ran below when they noticed the enormous crowd swarming inside their building, disrupting operations.

A top government official spoke to the nonviolent demonstrators as they marched from the EEDC office on Bende Road to the Abia State Government House in Umuahia.

INEC Pledges Adherence to Election Schedule to Political Parties Ahead of Anambra 2025

0

For the November 8 Anambra gubernatorial election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has promised political parties that it will adhere to the remaining schedule.

The pledge was made Tuesday in Abuja during INEC’s third regular quarterly consultative meeting with political parties, which was presided over by acting chairperson May Agbamuche-Mbu.

But in the state governorship race, Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu asked political parties to follow the commission’s planned operations.

According to her, ten of the thirteen important tasks planned for the Anambra election have already been finished by the commission.

The notice of polling, which is scheduled for October 25, the campaign deadline of November 6, and the election date of November 8 are among the unfinished business, she said.

The remaining actions, as specified in the program and timetable of operations, will be scrupulously adhered to by the commission.

“Therefore, political parties are required to remember the campaign deadline and adhere to it,” she stated.

The commission has been diligently working to ensure the poll is conducted successfully, according to the acting INEC chairman.

Additionally, she stated that the electoral body had met with national, state, and local government security agencies on multiple occasions.

The state has received all of the election’s non-sensitive materials, she said, and voter education and sensitization campaigns are still running strong.

Nigerians responded well to the ongoing nationwide continuous voter registration (CVR), according to Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu.

She stated, “This shows us that Nigerians trust our democracy and the commission’s work to make sure that all eligible Nigerians have the right to choose their leaders.”

Commencing on August 18, the exercise would last for a year, terminating on August 30, 2026, according to the acting INEC chairman.

She praised the contributions made to the electoral process by Mahmood Yakubu, the immediate past chairman of INEC, and said he left behind a legacy of integrity, innovation, and institutional strength.

She declared, “Today, we acknowledge with deep appreciation his (Yakubu’s) invaluable contribution, not just to INEC but to democracy across the in Africa.”

The National Assembly should move quickly on the ongoing constitutional and electoral reforms, Yusuf Dantalle, the national head of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), said in his remarks.

According to Mr. Dantalle, IPAC had already presented its recommendations, which included dismantling State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs) and urging that INEC be given control over all local government elections.

“IPAC also proposed the creation of an Electoral Offenses Commission to prosecute electoral offenders and the restoration of funding for political parties to ensure a level playing field,” he said.

The national chairman of IPAC also mentioned that in order to ensure the commission’s independence from political influence, the executive branch should no longer have the authority to choose INEC’s chairman, national commissioners, and resident electoral commissioners.

The forthcoming Anambra election, he claimed, will be a “litmus test” for the commission’s new leadership and lay the groundwork for other elections, including as the “decisive” general elections in 2027.

Nigerian voters anticipate free, fair, and inclusive elections in which each vote is taken into account and influences the final outcome.

He said, “The outcome of this off-cycle election will pave the way for the 2026 elections, which include the Federal Capital Territory Area Council polls, the gubernatorial elections in Osun and Ekiti States, and the pivotal general elections in 2027.”

In his speech, Mr. Dantalle encouraged INEC to correct its behavior.

PDP Legislators Demand Judges Be Warned Over Interference in Party Matters

0

The National Judicial Council has been urged to warn judges who are being used by desperate politicians to sabotage Nigeria’s democratic process by the Peoples Democratic Party caucus in the House of Representatives.

The call was issued by the caucus in a statement that its leader, Fred Agbedi (PDP-Bayelsa), signed.

Concerning the purported court meddling in political parties’ internal matters, Mr. Agbedi stated that it is a serious danger to the nation’s democratic stability.

The Federal High Court, Abuja Division, recently refused to grant a temporary injunction to prevent the PDP from holding its planned meetings and national convention, he added, necessitating the call.

Additionally, he stated that the court issued instructions that nullify the advantages of his decision to reject the temporary injunction.

The politician clarified, “The court declared that any action taken by the party in preparation for its national convention during the pendency of the suit shall be null and void, after refusing to grant a request for a restraining order to stop the forthcoming PDP convention.”

We are extremely concerned that despite the Supreme Court’s repeated rulings prohibiting judges from meddling in political parties’ internal affairs, some judges still serve as tools for desperate politicians looking to undermine democracy and impose a one-party system on Africa’s biggest democracy, Mr. Agbedi continued.

These statements undoubtedly give individuals opposed to the PDP national convention the opportunity to do so, preventing the major opposition party in Nigeria from fielding candidates in the 2027 presidential and other elections.

In order to avoid any misuse of the legal system that would jeopardize Nigeria’s multi-party democracy, they urged the National Judicial Council to take swift action. He stated that the independence, impartiality, and integrity of the court are essential to the survival of our democracy.

The congressman stated that the NJC must make sure that no court is willingly used to undermine the public will or destabilize political institutions.

Peter Mbah Exits PDP for APC, Emphasizes Commitment to Higher Principles

0

Enugu’s governor, Peter Mbah, has switched to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He made the announcement at a news conference on Tuesday.

The governor claimed that in order to better serve the people of Enugu and to support the party’s goals for growth and advancement, he decided to join the APC.

During the briefing, Mbah stated his dedication to furthering the state’s interests and his belief that the APC platform would offer more chances for cooperation and development.

He acknowledged that the change is necessary to meet the objectives of his administration, but he praised his old party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for the support over the years.

My sincere appreciation goes out to the Peoples Democratic Party, which gave us the platform on which we ran and prevailed. The PDP joined us in celebrating the win and helped us through a tough campaign,” he said.

Making tough, even painful, choices in the service of loftier ideals and objectives is a requirement of leadership. And everyone has to make a brave decision at some point in order to decide their future.

“We decided to join the All Progressives Congress today after much deliberation.”

Ahead of the governor’s scheduled defection, Mbah’s cabinet members joined the APC on Monday.

Nigeria Mourns as Ex-Foreign Affairs Minister Joy Ogwu Passes Away at 79

0

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and former Foreign Affairs Minister Prof. Joy Uche Angela Ogwu died at the age of 79.

She passed away in the early hours of Monday at a hospital in New York, USA, with her daughter by her side, according to family members who talked to the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA).

Ogwu, who was born in Delta State on August 22, 1946, was a distinguished academic and diplomat whose work included international diplomacy, policy research, and academics.

She was President Olusegun Obasanjo’s Foreign Affairs Minister for Nigeria from August 2006 to May 2007.

She became the first Nigerian woman to serve as the country’s Permanent Representative to the UN when she was appointed in 2008 and remained in that role until 2017.

Prior to being appointed as a minister, Ogwu was the Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), where she gained international renown for her knowledge of Nigerian foreign policy, disarmament, and international relations.

Professor Ogwu’s outstanding career put her at the forefront of influencing how Nigeria interacts with the world.

Outside of her official positions, she was a strong supporter of human rights, education, and women’s empowerment. She participated in UNESCO-funded initiatives that supported human rights education in Nigerian schools and was a member of the UN Secretary-General’s Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters.

Group Appeals for Abba Kyari’s Release, Citing Powers of Presidential Pardons

0

The Movement for the Emancipation of Nigeria (MEN) has urged the Federal Government to stop prosecuting suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari and to free him immediately.

MEN called Kyari’s ongoing arrest “a grave injustice” in a statement released on Tuesday by its Comrade General, former Sports Minister Solomon Dalung, in view of the recent flood of convicted criminals receiving presidential pardons.

“Despite recent presidential pardons granted to convicted drug traffickers, fraudsters, kidnappers, and bandits, many of whom were arrested by his team in the line of duty,” the statement reads. “The Movement for the Emancipation of Nigeria (MEN) observes with deep concern the continued detention and prosecution of DCP Abba Kyari.”

The late nationalist Herbert Macaulay, the late Major General Mamman Vatsa, and Maryam Sanda, who was given a death sentence for the murder of her husband, were among the 175 people who were reportedly pardoned by President Bola Tinubu last Thursday.

The recipients also included prisoners incarcerated for illicit mining, fraud, and manslaughter.

According to MEN, Kyari’s prosecution’s moral and legal justifications are essentially eliminated by the selective use of clemency, which “ridicules the principle of fairness.”

Kyari’s prosecution could deter law enforcement officers from putting their lives in danger to combat crime, the group warned.

“Kyari’s continuing arrest has essentially lost the moral and legal justification due to the recent wave of presidential amnesties and pardons. According to the group, his prosecution under these circumstances amounts to a double standard that compromises the integrity of Nigeria’s legal system.

MEN went on to call the trial “institutional betrayal against a man who once risked his life in the service of public order and national security.”

To put a stop to Kyari’s agony, the organization made a direct petition to President Tinubu and Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), the Attorney General of the Federation.

Therefore, we implore the President and the Attorney General of the Federation to drop all charges against DCP Abba Kyari and ensure his prompt release. A terrible precedent and a mockery of justice will result from anything less,” MEN said.

Formerly the leader of the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Kyari was hailed as Nigeria’s “super cop” due to his string of high-profile arrests.

On February 14, 2022, he was taken into custody after the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) issued a wanted list accusing him of plotting to tamper with and traffic 21.35 kilograms of cocaine that had been taken from suspected traffickers.

He has since entered a not guilty plea to the accusations.
