MultiChoice keep mum on DStv, GOtv price adjustment

0

Broadcasting company, MultiChoice Nigeria, has kept mum on the reported readjustment of the subscription rates for DStv and GOtv users in the country.

A report emerged on Tuesday claiming that the pay TV company had reduced its prices following a court order which mandated the company to stop the move to increase its monthly subscription.

The court ruled that the company halts the move to increase its subscription fees pending the determination of the suit brought before it by an Abuja-based lawyer, Festus Onifade.

In a suit before the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal in Abuja, Onifade had said the eight-day notice given for the price increase by the company was inadequate.

He then proceeded to file contempt charges against MultiChoice after it disobeyed the court order and proceeded with its price hike as announced via email to its customers.

In a ruling on June 7, the Tribunal fined MultiChoice the sum of N150 million for disobeying its order and ordered the company to provide its Nigerian customers with a one-month free subscription to its DStv and GOtv packages.

Following the court ruling, the company vowed to appeal the order of the Tribunal, saying that it disagreed with the ruling.

However, some reports (Not The According) claimed that the company had reflected the price readjustment on the DStv and GOtv mobile applications and its self-service website page.

Reports claimed that due to the adjustments, DStv subscribers will now pay N29,500 instead of N37,000 for the Premium package, while Compact+ package subscribers can now pay N19,800 instead of the new price of N25,000.

It also said that the readjustment now has Compact Bouquet subscribers paying N12,500 previously charged instead of N15,700, while Confam package subscribers will pay the old price of N7,400 instead of N9,300 per month.

For the Yanga package subscribers, the old rate of N4,200 will be paid against N5,100 placed as the new rate; while Padi subscribers will pay the former price of N2,950 instead of N3,600.

The same goes for GOtv subscribers, who are now required to pay the old rates of N12,500 for the Super+ package instead of N15,700.

GOtv Super users are required to pay N7,600 from N9,600, which the company charged; GOtv Max subscribers are to pay N5,700; GOtv Joli, N3,950; and N2,700 for GOtv Jinja.

However, responding to According Online’s inquiry in an email on Wednesday, the company refused to confirm or deny the reported readjustment of the subscription rates in accordance with the court ruling.

MultiChoice added that it will not comment on the tribunal ruling because the matter is still in court, and it is planning to file an appeal against the judgment.

It reads: “MultiChoice Nigeria is aware of the recent ruling by the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) regarding its jurisdiction to entertain a price regulation matter. We disagree with the ruling, and will therefore file an appeal against said ruling.

“As the matter is currently sub judice, we are restrained from making further comments.”

Man beaten to death over missing phone later found with accuser’s

0

The Delta State Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, has revealed circumstances surrounding the death of a man allegedly beaten by members of a local security watch group over a missing phone that was later found with the daughter of the accuser.

According to Edafe via a post on X on Tuesday, “Someone was accused of stealing a phone, a member of Anioma Security Watch mobilised his colleagues to beat him up till he died. They ran away after killing him.”

However, Edafe added, “Guess what? The phone was found with the daughter of the woman who raised the alarm.”

Edafe’s post was aimed at creating awareness towards putting an end to jungle justice as the PPRO posted a picture with the written words, “Red card to jungle justice.”

However, Edafe did not release the victim’s identity or indicate if any arrests had been made in connection with the killing.

Jungle justice, according to Researchgate, “is a form of public extrajudicial killings where an alleged criminal is humiliated, beaten or summarily executed by a crowd, vigilante or any other non-governmental law enforcement agencies.”

‘Davido ripped me off, used me to shine without giving me money’, —Portable

Controversial singer, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has not let go his war of words with Afrobeats sensation, David Adeleke, aka Davido, as he has dropped another bombshell alleging that the “Unavailable” crooner ripped him off to trend without giving him money.
In a trending video on social media on Tuesday, the “Zazzu Zeh” creator said the award-winning singer deceived Nigerians to believe he gave him a huge amount of money just to trend on social media.
In the video, Portable also claimed that Davido was supposed to feature him in a track when he hosted him at a dinner in Atlanta, United States.
He again reiterated his earlier accusation that Davido gave him a bad advice when he met him in the US, especially telling him to sign with Empire Music when instead of Sony Music where he (Davido) is signed on, which would limit his chances of winning a Grammy Award.

He added that he too is a ‘superstar’ and that Davido ought to have paid him $10,000 for the photos they took together.
“Davido ripped me, you invited me out for dinner, you posted me, but you didn’t give me a verse, you didn’t give me money, you just used me to trend,” Portable said.
“$10,000 wouldn’t have been bad if you gave me that at least. He said I am proud. I boarded a first-class flight to America. He didn’t give me anything, he is just flattering. He is not one of my philanthropists because he didn’t give me money.

Edo poll: APGA candidate advocates rule of law, accountability

0

The candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance in Edo state, Isaiah Osifo, on Tuesday, identified rule of law, accountability, due process,, independent House of Assembly, autonomous and a well funded local government to achieve sustainable development in the state.

Osifo, who spoke in Benin, also highlighted professional impartial public service and the autonomy of judiciary as values Edo State must invest in to drive meaningful development.

He said that he could deliver these in 30 days if elected as governor of the state, noting that money is not all that is needed to put the state on the part of development.

Osifo, who is also a former Chairman of Uhumwonde Local Government Area and former Chief of Staff to former Governor Oserheimen Osunbor, condemned immunity for the state governor, calling for equality of the citizens under the constitution.

He also refuted speculation of any alliance with the People Democratic Party, All Progressives Congress or the Labour party, noting that he is into the race to win on account of his sterling credentials and records in public service and challenged other candidate to submit themselves for public scrutiny.

He said, “The six key elements I mentioned are things you can achieve in 30 days without spending money and that will put the state on the path of rapid development and progress.

“You cannot talk of democracy without the rule of law. For example, those houses demolished by Governor Godwin Obaseki’s government are owned by individuals, was there judgment given by any court of law for the demolition?

“A state that has rule of law will not just pounce on people’s property and demolished them. There is no rule of law in Edo State as far as am concerned. If I am elected, I will ensure we are all equal under the law.

“I don’t even believe in the immunity for governors because you can’t commit crime and say you are covered by the immunity clause . What kind of immunity is that? Everybody must be equal before the law. A citizen must know that he is equal to the governor and I don’t need money to do that,” Osifo averred.

Osifo further promised to revive the fortune of the state with massive investment in agriculture which he said has the capability to provide jobs for millions of unemployed youths and food security

Anglican primate assures stakeholders of better security in Ajayi Crowther varsity

0

The Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Most Rev. Henry Ndukuba, has paid a solidarity visit to Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, in the wake of recent unpleasant incidents which occurred on the campus.

According Online reports that in May, a 200-level engineering student of the university, Alex Timileyi, was beaten to death by his colleagues over a claim that he stole a mobile phone.

The student was allegedly beaten to death inside a hostel known as Shepherd Inn on the school premises.

Meanwhile, giving an update on the situation on Tuesday, Media assistant, Sunday Saanu, who is on sabbatical at the institution, said that the Primate, accompanied by the Visitor to the university, Most Rev. Joseph Akinfenwa, the Secretary to the House of Bishops, Rt. Rev. Williams Aladekugbe, and the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Dr. Olutoyin Okeowo, among others, assured students, parents, and staff that God has checkmated the plans of the “devil” against the institution.

Addressing the ACU community, Ndukuba stated, “The plan of the devil was to completely destroy the university we have been labouring to build in the last 17 years with good reputation, were it not for God who checkmated the level of the disaster.”

In a post via Facebook, Saanu noted that the Primate urged all stakeholders to keep believing in ACU’s capacity to offer quality education and moral training, noting that the university would emerge stronger from the storms.

“What has happened has made us wiser and stronger. I have been informed that the university management had decided to put in place certain measures that would prevent these kinds of ugly experiences. I know that the security of the students is going to be given more attention. One thing is certain, affliction shall not arise again,” the Primate assured.

Commending the management for their handling of the situation, Ndukuba disclosed that the incidents had rattled all ACU stakeholders as “this is an academic environment where such things were not expected to happen.”

After being led to the scene of the incident at Shepherd Inn, the Primate advised students to be vigilant and report any unusual occurrences to the authorities instead of posting on social media.

“Instead of posting your observations or grievances on social media, report to the school management where there will be solutions. Social media will not offer any solution, rather, it will continue to soil our image. Therefore, don’t keep quiet when you observe anything that looks unusual,” he stated.

Ndukuba, who prayed for the students and staff, assured them that the Church of Nigeria would continue praying for ACU’s success, stressing that the institution, with its track record, is “a beautiful university that must be supported and protected.”

Earlier, the Pro-Chancellor had briefed the Primate on the incidents of rape and a student’s death over an alleged phone theft, which had led to police involvement.

“The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Timothy Adebayo, who was on an official assignment at the time of the visit was represented by his Deputy, Prof. Benjamin Popoola and other management team, including the Registrar, Dr. J. T. Babatola, University’s Bursar, Mr. Ayodele Olusanwo and the University’s Librarian, Dr. Bosede Adebimpe Ajiboye,” the statement added.

Focus on electoral reforms not rotational presidency, Obi’s spokesman, Tanko urges NASS

0

The Chief Spokesperson, Peter Obi/Datti Baba-Ahmed Presidential Campaign Council for the 2023 election, Alhaji Yunusa Tanko has said that reforming the electoral process is much more needed now than the proposed single-tenure rotational presidency, to deepen democracy.
Tanko, a former National Chairman of the defunct National Conscience Party, said this in an interview with journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, insisting that reforming the electoral process would guarantee the emergence of credible leaders across all levels of government.
He further stated that deepening democracy to guarantee the emergence of credible leaders should be one of the key things to consider in the ongoing process of amending the Constitution.
“These (single tenure of six years and rotational presidency) are things that will be decided by the Nigerian people when the time comes.
“They are not things that should be on the front burner of discussions at the moment now.
“This is because what we need actually at the moment is for us to have an electoral reform that would dovetail into credible elections.

“Once we have that, we shall be talking about the tenure of office,” Tanko said.
The Labour Party chieftain further said that the National Assembly should not focus on tenure of office but on deepening the electoral process to promote democracy.
“Let us reform the electoral system to make it clean and clear so that we can have credible elections,” he said.
TVN reports that a bill seeking a single term of six years for the President and state governors was brought up recently by 35 members of the House of Representatives.
The bill also canvasses the rotation of the presidency among the six geopolitical zones of the country.
The 35 legislators, under the auspices of Reformed-minded Legislators, said both proposals would lead to a reduction in the cost of governance.
Rep. Ikenga Ugochinyere, the spokesman of the group, added that the move would unite the country, ensure seamless power transition and promote the development of the country.

Delta community rejects govt’s peace moves with warring neighbours

0

The Okuama-Okolaba communal crisis in Delta State has taken a new twist as the Okolaba Federated Community in Bomadi Local Government Area has kicked against ongoing moves by the state government to resettle the troubled Okuama indigenes of Ughelli South LGA back into their devastated ancestral homes.

The Okolaba Federated Community described the Okuama indigenes as “strangers” in the troubled locality, saying they “have no basis claiming any land in the first instance because they never owned one.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Chairman, Okoloba Federated Community, Mr. Clement Koki, copies of which were made available to journalists in Warri on Tuesday.

The statement insisted that “any hurried and haphazard approach to the dispute (by the government) will be like pouring water on top of the rock, which will not stand the test of time.”

Recall that the lingering boundary dispute between Okuama and Okoloba communities became a national discourse following the March 24, 2024, killing of 17 military officers and soldiers reportedly on a peace mission to Okuama.

The Army, in what was believed to be a revenge mission, laid siege to Okuama and demolished the entire agrarian community thus forcing the indigenes to flee into the creeks for weeks, until the government called for the pullout of the invading troops and rehabilitation of the indigenes.

The statement by the Okoloba Federated Community, while claiming to maintain ancestral boundary directly with Akugbene people, partly read, “Okuama farmers are from far away upland Ewu-Urhobo kingdom and are strangers to Akugbene who gave them portions of land to farm and fish.

“So, they do not have any basis for claiming any land in the first instance, because they never owned one. They should vacate all that land that they have craftily and aggressively grabbed, as we shall not allow even a foot of our God-given land to be occupied by them for whatever reasons.

“We will do everything legitimately possible, acting within the ambit of the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to achieve just that, without taking laws into our hands.

“We are also willing and ready to support the security agencies, the state and Federal governments to effectively resolve the long-standing impasse but we add that the root cause of the dispute must be explored exhaustively because that is the only sure bet to a lasting peace.

“We advise strongly that any hurried and haphazard approach to the dispute will be like pouring water on top of the rock, which will not stand the test of time, whilst we strongly wish and pray for peace and prosperity to reign in Delta State and of course Nigeria at large.”

While maintaining that Okoloba people are peace-loving, law-abiding, hospitable, benevolent and sociable, the statement further claimed that “The Okoloba Federated Community is the undisputable proprietary owner of all that fishing Lakes (Afou Donou, Agu Bolou (Meinturubobor Donou), Oge Donou, Agbakoropei Donou, Okirimeli Donou, Benmo Donou, etc).

“All that farmlands, economic trees, territorial waters falling within the ancestral boundaries so elicited here above and that proprietary ownership and control has been peacefully established and maintained by Okoloba from time immemorial by collecting annual rents/royalties from strangers/settlers from various places (especially the Okuama Ewu-Urhobo) who come to farm on those lands and/or fish in those lakes in line with customary practice.”

It argued further that, “The Okuama people, on the other hand, are strangers from Ewu kingdom in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State. They are farmers who came seeking safe havens and were given some portions of land by the Akugbene community (with whom we maintain direct ancestral boundaries on the Southern flank) to farm and fish. However, no sooner than they secured the portions of land for fishing and farming given to them by their benefactors that the Okuama strangers embarked on a wild and reckless ambition of land-grabbing and territorial expansion”.

“This land-grabbing disposition the Okuama started by encroaching on the land of their benefactors (Akugbene) straying beyond the portions given to them and that set them on a war path with the Akugbene who accommodated them when they needed shelter, resulting in series of altercations culminating in lawsuits that led to the 1945 judgment in favour of Akugbene.

“The 1945 judgment unequivocally affirmed their (Okuama) strangers/settlers status in consonance with the ‘Intelligence Report’ of the Commission of Inquiry set up to look into the root cause of the Akugbene / Okuama imbroglio. Not satisfied, they crossed our boundary line with Akugbene into Okoloba land which had also resulted in a series of intermittent conflicts between us right from the days of our forefathers.

“The same Okuama people who accepted their stranger/settler status and were paying certain minimum rents to Okoloba for farming and fishing on our lands and fishing lakes for which we have evidence!

“That the crux of the intermittent conflicts between Okoloba and Okuama had been due to the resistance by Okoloba people towards the crafty and aggressive land-grabbing and territorial expansionist moves of the Okuama people, which came to the fore no sooner than they set foot on the land given to them by Akugbene people specifically for fishing and farming.”

Firm donates sanitary pads to Lagos schoolgirls

0

A firm, Clina-Lancet Laboratories Nigeria, has provided students of Queen’s College, Lagos, with sanitary pads and educational materials.

This is said to be part of the firm’s Corporate Social Responsibility and commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3.

SDG Goal 3 aims to “ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all ages.”

The firm stated that no fewer than 3,000 sanitary pads were donated to the girls to improve their menstrual hygiene and alleviate the burden of the high cost of sanitary pads.

The Managing Director of Clina-Lancet Laboratories, Nigeria, Dr Olayemi Dawodu, while distributing the pads to the girls on Tuesday in Lagos, said the company was concerned about the lack of access to sanitary pads among girls, leading to unhygienic practices and absenteeism from school during menstruation.

She stressed the importance of menstrual hygiene, urging the private sector and non-governmental organisations to collaborate to make sanitary pads available for school girls in Nigeria.

Dawodu said, “We believe that by working together with NGOs, civil organisations, and private companies, we can ensure all girls have access to menstrual hygiene and essential products.

“Menstrual hygiene is a crucial aspect of a girl’s overall health. Proper hygiene practices can significantly reduce the risk of infections and ensure girls can participate fully in school and daily activities.”

The National Library of Medicine defines menstrual hygiene as the practice of managing menstruation hygienically and safely, using materials that are culturally and socially acceptable, and having access to facilities and services that enable women and girls to change and dispose of their menstrual materials safely and with dignity.

Menstrual hygiene management includes; using clean and absorbent materials to absorb menstrual blood, changing materials regularly, washing hands with soap and water after changing materials, and having access to private and safe facilities for changing and disposal.

The United Nations Children’s Fund states that poor menstrual hygiene can pose physical health risks and has been linked to reproductive and urinary tract infections.

Speaking on the “Pad Up a Girl” campaign, the managing director said it aims to empower girls with knowledge and resources to manage their periods with confidence and dignity.

The programme addressed various aspects of menstrual hygiene, including proper pad usage, hygiene maintenance, and dispelling of stigmas surrounding menstruation.

Giving health talks to the students, the Wellness Occupational Manager for Clina-Lancet Laboratories, Dr Amaka Nwigwe, highlighted the importance of sanitary hygiene.

She, however, said menstrual hygiene goes beyond maintaining personal hygiene or being clean.

“It also involves making sure that the girl child is comfortable and not embarrassed and confident to discuss menstruation and what happens to them, which is why a platform like this is a very laudable project.

“It creates an opportunity for discussions in the open. So, I’m just so glad that we did this today, and I’m sure that the impact that we had today will resonate in years to come”, she explained.

Commanding the company for the gesture, the Principal of Queen’s College, Lagos, Mrs. Oyindamola Obabori, represented by Vice Principal Student Affairs 1, Mrs Adebiyi Titilayo, said, “We are grateful to Clina-lancet Laboratories for bringing this important initiative to our school.

“Equipping our girls with the knowledge and resources they need to manage their periods effectively is essential for their well-being and academic success.”
