Ododo unveils $25,000 loan scheme for Kogi farmers

The Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Ododo, has unveiled the Community Revolving Fund loan disbursement allowing cluster groups of farmers in the State to access $25,000 each.

The CRF loan is facilitated under the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes project in collaboration with the World Bank.

The scheme is an initiative aimed at addressing the challenges of climate change as well as supporting community agricultural efforts.

Ododo, in his remarks at the unveiling on Wednesday, at the Government House in Lokoja, the state capital, thanked all stakeholders involved in the project and emphasized his administration’s commitment to agricultural development.

The governor noted that within five months, his administration has implemented various initiatives to enhance agricultural productivity,  including the provision of agricultural machinery for mechanisation, agricultural inputs, training, and capacity building for farmers.

The CRF loan disbursement prioritises women, with 70 per cent of the beneficiaries listed for them.

He urged the ACReSAL CRF beneficiaries to utilise the loan judiciously, stressing that it is designed to support their agricultural endeavours and improve their livelihoods.

Ododo assured that the loan would boost agricultural practices in the catchment areas, leading to increased food production and security.

Earlier in his remarks, the Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, represented by Jibril Abu, emphasised the importance of partnership for progress, as highlighted in the 17 thematic areas of the Sustainable Development Goals.

He commended the governor for his leadership and commitment to the development of the state.

Also, the State Project Coordinator of ACReSAL, Ladi Jatto, commended the governor for his total commitment to the success of the project in the state, saying the Governor has made it easy for the people of Kogi to take advantage of the project.

She called on the beneficiaries to make the best of the opportunity presented by the presentation of cheques to them by using the funds for the purpose stipulated.

The state Commissioner for Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, Mukadam Asiru, and his Environment and Ecological Management counterpart, Engr Olusegun Joseph, thanked the Governor for paying due attention to the plight of the rural poor.

The Obaro of Kabba and the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland also commended the Governor for his efforts in supporting the agricultural sector.

The beneficiaries in their separate remarks expressed their gratitude to Governor Ododo for the unprecedented prompt payment of salaries, especially the recent payment of June salary before the Sallah celebration festival, saying it’s the first of it’s kind for the workers of the state civil service.

While appreciating the state government for the opportunity, the beneficiaries assured Governor Ododo of their determination to ensure judicious use of the loan.

They praised the governor’s commitment to agricultural development and his dedication to improving the lives of the people of Kogi State.

The CRF loan disbursement is a significant milestone in the state’s agricultural development journey, and it is expected to have a positive impact on the lives of the beneficiaries and the state’s agricultural sector as a whole.

Strike looms as ASUU gives Nigerian govt three weeks to address demands

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Wednesday gave the Federal Government a three-week ultimatum to address its demands or risk another strike in the institutions.
The ASUU Chairman of the Federal University Dutse (FUD), Jigawa State, Salim Ahmed gave the warning at an emergency press conference held at the union’s Secretariat in Dutse.
He lamented that the present administration has deliberately ignored the ASUU leadership since May 29 last year.
Ahmed said the union was demanding the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement with the federal government, university autonomy, revitalization of funds for the universities, and release of the unpaid salaries of its members, among others.
He revealed that the union would set machinery in motion to further mobilize its members and sensitize them for further action within the next three weeks.

He said: “Members of the Expanded Executive Officers of the ASUU Federal University Dutse met today, Wednesday, 19th June 2024, to consider and take a look at the patriotic engagements of the union with the Federal and State governments on how best to address all the lingering problems bedeviling Nigerian public universities.
“Based on all these, the members of our great union in this branch, like those of the other branches, are believing that the Federal Government is unwilling to decisively address the outstanding issues with the union, therefore, in line with the directives from the National secretariat, we resolved to hold a press conference and let the parents, the stakeholders in university education know of the situation and to be sensitized and well informed of the failure of the government to address these lingering issues.
“The general public should be aware of the true state of affairs.
“The union calls on all well-meaning discerning minds to prevail on Nigerian Government to attend to these outstanding issues and meet with our union leadership so as to avert an unnecessary and avoidable industrial crisis in our already frail and weak university system.”
The union ended its last strike which crippled the nation’s universities for 10 months on October 21, 2022.

FG announces plan to send first Nigerian to space

The Nigerian Government has announced that it is sending its first citizen into space.
The Director General of the National Space Research and Development Agency, NASRDA, Mathew Adepoju, made this known at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday.
He said that the government had signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, with the Space Exploration and Research Agency, SERA, to facilitate the ambitious venture.
According to him, “This collaboration, which is coming to the country, marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s 25th anniversary of Space Exploration journey and opens new opportunities for scientific research and technological advancement.”
Meanwhile, TVN recently reported that NASRDA had decried the lack of patronage for homegrown technology to fight maritime insecurity.
The agency said that 90 per cent of security challenges facing the maritime sector in the country can be tackled by Geo-Stationary Satellite.

Torrential rains kill 11 in Ivory Coast

At least 11 people were killed in torrential in Ivory Coast last week.
The country’s Minister of National Cohesion, Solidarity, and the Fight against Poverty, Mysss Belmonde Dogo, disclosed this to journalists in Abidjan on Wednesday.
He said: “The provisional report shows 11 victims dead and identified, several others not yet identified and seven injured noted and taken into account.
The minister said the provisional toll “is already heavy, adding that the government is mobilising resources to support the affected families next week.
Torrential rains fell on several localities in the West African nation, including the capital, where several neighborhoods were underwater, over 300 people were taken to safety and 18 others were evacuated to health centers between Thursday and Saturday.
Ivory Coast has been experiencing a long rainy season this year, peaking in June.

Tapswap adjourns token allocation date indefinitely  

A popular tap-2-earn app, Tapswap, powered by TON Blockchain, has said the token allocation to users has been indefinitely postponed as the representatives are seeking the best ways to reward the tap-to-earn gamers.

This was disclosed by a Head of Communications, Tapswap, John Robbin, on an X space on Wednesday.

The app, which required users to repeatedly tap the icon in the centre of the Telegram Tapswap bot screen to mine coins, recently gained momentum among Nigerians tapping on their phone screens in pursuit of financial earnings and has amassed over 50 million users since it launched on February 15, 2024.

According to him, the method of token allocation has not yet been ascertained, stressing that the processes cannot be communicated before the allocation.

“The token launch was postponed until July 1. The new date will be communicated.

“We will allocate a significant part of the tokens to the community to retain the tappers. We want you all to be part of the tapswap community.

“We need a token airdrop to be a win-win for all of us. We have started communicating with many exchanges and platforms,” Robbin said.

The app’s communication head also noted that those using the mechanism to farm taps and abuse the game would be banned by running checks from the community members while seeking genuine tappers’ patience.

Speaking on the mining processes, he said, “Just open the app and tap on it; that will give you shares. The more you tap and the more upgrades you do, the more shares you will have when we finalize the tokens on it.

“The more tokens you want to have, the more tapping you have to do.”

On the booster option, which has already ended, the representative said it was not something new, adding, “We have room exponentially faster than we thought, and then to develop the game plan further, we introduced a paid feature to make their capital, but it was not mandated on the users.

“We introduced the limited x2 donation because the new influx of users kept coming in, and we needed them to make something out of it and get a fair allocation at TGE.

“It was a platform that allowed people who joined recently to compete with people who started earlier. It is gone for now, but we are looking forward to using the money we earned from it to improve the game in the future.

“It is all going to our 25 staffers working around the clock to sustain the app. We want to be here for a very long time.”

He also urged people to continue joining the tapping app as there’s time for them to get an appreciable token.

Recall that Nigerians, including young and old, have been obsessively tapping on their phones, with some asserting to be waiting for the tokens to be allocated to buy cars and houses of their choice from the many taps they have accumulated.

In a viral clip, a Keke driver was seen tapping away on his phone with one hand while simultaneously steering his moving vehicle and transporting passengers.

Another viral video showed several traders in Northern Nigeria tapping vigorously on their screens.

Makinde approves Olakunlehin’s appointment as 43rd Olubadan

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has approved the appointment of Oba Akinloye Olakulehin as the 43rd Olubadan of lbadanland.

The state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Olusegun Olayiwola, made this known in a statement on Wednesday in Ibadan, the state capital.

The statement was made available to journalists by the governor’s spokesman, Sulaimon Olanrewaju.

Olayiwola said the governor gave the approval in a memo dated June 14, 2024, while exercising the powers conferred on him by Section 19 (Cap 28) Law of Oyo State 2000 as amended.

The commissioner stated that the approval is a culmination of a series of processes stipulated by the extant laws of the state regarding ascension to royal thrones.

Olayiwola noted that “the governor congratulated the new Olubadan, and prayed that his tenure would birth greater developments in Ibadanland and Oyo State as a whole.”

In April, the Olubadan-In-Council nominated Olakulehin as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland after the seat became vacant on March 14 following the death of the late Olubadan, Oba Lekan Balogun, who died at the age of 81.

However, following the nomination, the Otun Balogun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Abimbola Ajibola, said Olakulehin was not physically fit to assume the throne at the time.

But in response, Olakulehin expressed his medical fitness and readiness to rule as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland.

Nasarawa shuts mining firm over infraction

The Nasarawa State government has shut down a Lithium mining firm, Trimadix Geomin Consult Limited in the Kokona Local Government Area of the state for commencing operations without following the laid down laws guarding and regulating mining activities in the state.

Meanwhile, the mining company had in some sections of the media, recently accused the Nasarawa State government of undue interference in their mining activities in the state.

Speaking on the development during a press conference in Lafia on Wednesday, the state Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Kwanta Yakubu lamented that Trimadix Geomin Consult Limited did not follow the due process before commencing operations, therefore it was not known as a mining company in the state.

He further explained that the mining firm was closed down in line with the state government’s commitment to put an end to the activities of illegal miners across the state.

The Commissioner said, “The attention of the Nasarawa State Government has been drawn to a press conference by one Mr. Tim Eldon of Trimadix Geomin Consult Limited, accusing the Nasarawa State Government of undue interference in their mining operations in the state, particularly, in Kokona Local Government Area.

“You would recall that on April 19, 2024, which is exactly two months today, the Nasarawa State Government in collaboration with the security agencies took a bold step to secure the Amba community of Kokona LGA from the activities of illegal miners that constitute a threat to the peace and security of the community and its environs.

“This action followed a petition from the community’s chief on the illegal mining activities in his domain without proper consent.

“There exist in Nasarawa State, the Executive Order No. 02 of 2022 signed into Law by His Excellency, Governor Abdullahi Sule, which particularly provides that all community consent and development agreement made pursuant to Section 116
of the Mineral and Mining Act, 2007, and prior to signing by authenticated
Community Heads shall be forwarded to the Ministry of Justice through the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources to be vetted and certified by the Attorney General of Nasarawa State.

“The Executive Order also provides that all mining entities arriving the state with
Authority of the Federal Government to carry out mining in the state must undergo checks by the Ministry responsible for Environment and mining, and the security agencies in the state in order to verify their legal status, citizenship and background before settlement.

“The so-called mining entity claiming to be licensed to carry out mining activities in the Amba community is not known to the Nasarawa State Government according to
the provisions of the Executive Order No. 02 of 2022, and the mining site remains closed and secured until responsible investors who are trusted by the
community and the state, through a proper consenting, are licensed to mine in the area,” the commissioner averred.

Kwanta further reiterated the state government’s commitment to continue to mount surveillance on the mining site.

He added that any other mining site with similar issues of not following the laid down laws of the land would be shut down by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.

The Commissioner explained that the state government was fully aware of the need for all communities endowed with mineral resources in the state to be protected from infiltration by unidentifiable entities and individuals with the propensity and capacity for mischief and criminality, adding that it was what necessitated the state government to begin the shutting down of illegal mining companies across the state.

“We have carried out a series of robust engagements and mass sensitisation to
bring to the knowledge of stakeholders in the mining sector operating in the state of the regulatory provisions of the Executive Order No. 02 of 2022 to promote security and environmental safeguards in mining communities.

“While the government of Nasarawa State remains committed to promoting investment opportunities and the growth of businesses for economic development and poverty reduction, the state government would not compromise its determination to rid the state of illegal mining activities that put the life of our people and the safety of communities in danger,” he added

Edo PDP dismisses reports on ex-Rep’s expulsion

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State has dismissed reports on the expulsion of a former member of the House of Representatives, Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama.
The PDP Chairman in Oredo LGA, Mr Oduwa Igbinosun, told journalists on Wednesday in Benin that the reports on the purported suspension were misleading.
Igbinosun added that the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) had extended the tenure of all elected executives and rectified them to act as a caretaker committee.
Also, the executives of PDP Ward 2, Oredo LGA said they were not aware of the expulsion of the ex-lawmaker.
The Secretary of the ward, Mr Jesuobo Obadigie, disclosed this in a chat with journalists.
“Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama remains not just a member, but a prominent and formidable leader of the party and continues to enjoy the total support of the members in Ward 2.
“It is expected that anyone who loves the party should at this point be focused on actions that will unite the party ahead of the September governorship elections.
“This is to warn mischief makers and impostors to desist from their criminal and divisive actions that could cause harm,” he stated.

Oyebanji appoints Special Adviser on Lands

Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has approved the appointment of Professor James Olaleye as the Special Adviser on Land, eGIS and Survey.

According to a statement by the Special Adviser on Media to the Governor, Yinka Oyebode, on Wednesday, Olaleye’s appointment takes effect from July 1, 2024.

Oyebanji, while congratulating the new appointee on his appointment, urged him “to deploy his wealth of experience as a renowned scholar in the field of Surveying Engineering to boost the administration’s strategic efforts in areas of land administration, urban renewal project and safer environment”.

Olaleye, a Professor of Surveying Engineering, bagged a First Class Bachelor’s degree in Surveying from the University of Lagos, Akoka, in 1981; and a Masters degree in Surveying from the same University in 1984. He bagged his PhD in Surveying Engineering from the University of Brunswick, Canada, in 1992.

He started his academic career as a Graduate Assistant at the University of Lagos in 1982 and rose to the position of a professor in 2015. He held different positions, including Sub Dean, Faculty of Engineering, and Head of the Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics. He retired from the University in December 2023.

Prof Olaleye, a specialist in Digital Mapping, Hydrography and Geomatics, has extensive work experience in resource mapping, GPS and modern survey methods, especially in coastal environments. He was awarded the prize for the best paper publication in 1994 by the American Society for Photogrammetry.
