OOU ASUU holds rally ahead of nationwide strike

0

The Academic Staff Union of Universities of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, on Wednesday, held a rally to sensitise parents and students ahead of a national strike.

The rally led by the OOU branch acting Chairman, Dr Olooto Wasiu, took the lecturers around the university campus, where they told the students of the imminent strike action, urging them to understand that the strike is meant to save the nation’s public universities.

The Union also stopped over at bus terminals, where they addressed parents and motorists about the impending strike action.

Some of inscriptions on their placards read: “Nigerians, ASUU has sacrificed more than enough for the survival of the university system”, “FG stop playing politics with our educational system”, “Education is a right and not a privilege”, “Our negotiation should be completed and implemented”, among others.

The acting Chairman of ASUU in the institution, Dr Olooto, said that the lecturers organised the rally in line with the directive of the national body.

Olooto said that the strike ought to have since commenced but the Union elected to postpone to a later date in July to enable the lecturers to prepare the minds of stakeholders beforehand.

Speaking with journalists after the rally, Olooto identified non – non-implementation of the 2009 ASUU/FG agreement in full, rejection of the UTAS payment system developed by the ASUU and the continued use of the IPPIS to pay members as well as dissolution of some Governing Council of Federal Universities when their tenure has not yet ended, as some of the unresolved issues necessitating the impending nationwide strike by ASUU.

He disclosed that the government is also owing the lecturers three and half months under the guise of a ‘no work, no pay policy’ as punishment for a previous strike while the government has failed to attend to the union’s request for university autonomy as some of the reasons for the looming nationwide strike.

He explained that the strike was inevitable, hence the advance notice to Nigerians, especially stakeholders, so that nobody would be taken unaware.

Olooto said, “The basis of the rally we had today is to sensitize our students and stakeholders in the university about the impending action. The action may be determined by circumstances. It might be a strike or something else.

“The essence is to keep them aware that very soon and truly I say unto you that very soon the action will be exposed but it will be as directed by the national body. I believe that they have been sensitized and given their consent. So, if they heard that ASUU was on strike, they would have already been aware of it and its purpose.

“There are many things the government has not done. Our colleagues were being owed eight months’ salary because of the previous strike. They adopted the policy of ‘no work no pay.’ They have paid four and half months, it still remains three and half months unpaid. We are saying the remaining months owed to our members should be paid.

“The claim was that they didn’t teach but they forgot that the job of lecturers is not only limited to teaching. There are areas of community service, there are areas of research. Let them go ask the students if what they were supposed to be taught when ASUU was on strike was not eventually taught when the strike was called off.

“Immediately after the strike was called off and school resumed, we made sure that all that the students were supposed to learn were treated, they were examined, scripts were marked and results were released. What else did they want us to do that we did not do? So, there is no basis for withholding the three and half months salary of our members.”

Ogun gov’s wife seeks collaboration to improve sickle cell care

0

The wife of the governor of Ogun state, Mrs Bamidele Abiodun, on Wednesday, called for increased collaboration between healthcare providers, governments and international organisations towards supporting sickle cell patients with qualitative healthcare.

Abiodun made the call during a sensitisation programme to commemorate 2024 World Sickle Cell Day at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto Abeokuta.

The programme themed, “Hope Through Progress: Advancing Sickle Cell Care Globally”, was organised by the first lady’s pet project, Ajose Foundation and Aglow Sickle Cell Club.

She noted that the theme of the event was apt, as it emphasised the importance and effectiveness of speaking with one voice to advance care for sickle cell patients.

She also said the theme for this year’s celebration is a wake up call to unite the sickle cell community, raise awareness, reduce stigma and encourage those affected by the disorder.

Abiodun said “Sickle Cell Disease affects millions worldwide, transcending race and ethnicity, with a significant proportion of affected individuals in Africa.

“According to WHO, Nigeria accounts for about 33 per cent of the 300,000 children diagnosed every year with the disease.

“We can expect that a good number of such children will be born in Ogun State, as our own Ministry of Health has said that 25 per cent of the country’s total population are carriers of genes that give rise to the genetic disorder.

“The recent approval of gene therapies in America marks a significant milestone in SCD treatment, offering hope for a cure. However, for us in Africa, we must work even harder to improve accessibility and affordability of these treatments for all patients,” she averred.

Speaking about its burden, the First Lady said that sickle cell does not only negatively impact the patient, but also the entire family, explaining that parents often bear the emotional and financial toll of caring for a sick child and watching a loved one in severe pain and other complications.

She pointed out that the day serves as a reminder of the daily challenges faced by sickle cell patients, calling for urgent action in the area of education, sensitisation and enlightenment to checkmate the genetic disorder in the state and the world at large.

While lauding Governor Dapo Abiodun-led administration for improving access to quality healthcare in the state, the Founder, Aglow Sickle Cell Club, Dr Funke Oyeneye, informed that Ogun was the first state in the federation to have Health Insurance Scheme for sickle cell patients and pregnant women.

Oyeneye enjoined individuals and corporate bodies to continue to amplify the voices of patients and families affected by the disease, appealing for support from patient advocacy groups in creating awareness and reducing stigma.

The event had in attendance children and adults living with sickle cell anaemia across the state, with side attractions which include, a sickle cell diary, drama, poem, talent hunt and quiz competition.

This water supply is a good development for us.”

Edo PDP expels Shaibu, Orbih for alleged anti-party activities

0

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State on Wednesday expelled the state’s former deputy governor, Philip Shaibu, from the party for alleged anti-party activities.
The PDP Publicity Secretary in the state, Mr. Ogie Vasco, said in a statement in Benin City the party’s former National Vice Chairman, South-South, Chief Dan Orbih, was also expelled for the same reason.
Vasco said the decision was taken at a meeting attended by nine members of the State Working Committee at the party secretariat on Wednesday.
Shaibu had challenged the outcome of the February 24 governorship primary which produced Asue Ighodalo as the PDP governorship candidate in Edo at the Federal High Court, Abuja.
Justice James Omotosho, however, dismissed the suit in a ruling delivered on May 27.
Shaibu was impeached by the state House of Assembly for alleged gross misconduct on April 8.
He declared his support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Monday Okpebholo, at an event held in the state last week.
Orbih on his part has been locked in a battle with Governor Godwin Obaseki for the control of Edo PDP machinery since 2021.
He recently rejected Obaseki’s choice of Ighodalo as PDP governorship candidate in the state.
The statement read: “The SWC has extensively deliberated on the issue and resolved to expel, with immediate effect, Chief Dan Orbih, National Vice Chairman South South.
“It also decided to expel Phillip Shaibu and upheld the expulsion of Ogbeide-Ihama from Ward 2, Oredo Local Government Area.”
However, in his reaction to the development, Orbih told journalists the body had no powers to suspend a member of the National Working Committee or expel anybody without following the party’s constitution.
“When a group of persons sits down to make pronouncements that are unconstitutional it only shows that they are ignorant of the constitution of the party.
“That is all I have to say about that and nothing more,” he stated.
