Stop ex-minister Diezani from using my name, estranged husband urges court

Admiral Alison Madueke has filed a petition in the Lagos State High Court, seeking a legal declaration to end his marriage to Diezani and requesting that she stop using his last name.

He is asking the court to order the former Minister of Petroleum Resources to revert to her maiden name, Agama.

This was contained in Madueke’s petition for jactitation of marriage (declaration that a marital union has ended).

The ex-Chief of Naval Staff argues that Diezani’s ongoing use of his name despite their marriage being legally over is damaging to his reputation and could lead to unintended consequences, including mistaken liability, particularly given the corruption allegations against her.

Madueke is a former military governor of Anambra and Imo states. He married Diezani on June 30, 1999, under the Marriage Act.

The petitioner, Madueke, noted that Diezani had previously filed for divorce at the Nassarawa State High Court in Mararaba Gurku in November 2021, citing an irreconcilable breakdown of their marriage, seeking to end their union formally.

He said he did not oppose the suit, resulting in the court’s dissolution of the marriage, yet Diezani persists in using his surname, despite the formal termination of their marital union.

He stated, “On the 13th day of April 2022, judgment was delivered in Suit No. NSD/MG345/2021 by Hon. Justice A.A. Ozegya dissolving the marriage between the petitioner and the respondent on the ground that the marriage has broken down irretrievably.

“The said dissolution of marriage has now become absolute by the operation of law.

“Even though the marriage has been dissolved and is now legally finalised, the respondent continues to use the petitioner’s first name (Alison) and surname (Madueke) as her own without any justification or consent from the petitioner.

“It is now more than two-years that the respondent continues to use the name of the petitioner to his embarrassment.”

Madueke revealed that he directed his legal representatives to serve Diezani a formal request on December 14, 2023, demanding that she cease using his surname and revert to her maiden name, Agama.

However, despite this legal notice, Diezani has failed to respond and continues to use his name.

The petition further read, “The respondent has continued to hold out herself as the wife of the petitioner even when the marriage has been dissolved.

“The respondent is undergoing criminal trials in both Nigeria and the United Kingdom. The charge in Nigeria is Suit No. FUC/ABI/CR/208/2010.

“The respondent faces public allegations of corruption and financial misconduct, for which trials are ongoing for both.

“The persistent portrayal of the respondent as the spouse of the petitioner is creating embarrassment, a misleading impression and tarnishing the reputation, integrity, and public image of the petitioner.

“The respondent’s continued use of the petitioner’s first and surname falsely suggests to the public a continuing relationship between the parties though same has since legally ended.

“The respondent’s continued use of the petitioner’s first and family names poses a significant risk of legal and financial harm to the petitioner.

“The petitioner seeks the intervention of this Honourable Court to prevent the respondent from further using his first name and surname, thereby safeguarding his image, personality, and reputation.”

Madueke sought an order of perpetual injunction restraining Diezani from further using his names following the dissolution of their marriage.

He also prayed for a perpetual injunction restraining the respondent from further asserting, by words or conduct, the existence of marriage between them.

He is seeking a court order that compels Diezani to revert to her maiden name and to publicly announce in a national newspaper, both in Nigeria and the UK, that she has ceased using his surname.

Diezani has held several significant positions in the Nigerian government, including Minister of Transportation, Minister of Mines and Steel Development, and Minister of Petroleum Resources.

She was also the first female President of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, elected in November 2014.

Diezani was accused by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission of embezzling $2.5bn from the Nigerian government during her tenure from 2010 to 2015 under President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

Corruption allegations have led to her arrest and legal proceedings in both Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

Ibrahim gains promotion with Beerschot

Nigeria midfielder Alhassan Ibrahim has secured promotion to the Belgian First Division A with Beerschot, According Sports Extra reports.

They achieved the feat by finishing in pole position in the Challenger Pro League standings with 56 points in 30 matches, two points more than Dender in second place and winners of the second automatic promotion ticket.

Deinze, Lommel, Zulte Waregem, and Patro Eisden followed in third, fourth, fifth, and sixth positions in that particular order, and they will be involved in promotion play-offs.

Ibrahim, who started 12 of 25 appearances for Beerschot during their triumphant campaign, shared his excitement on Instagram on Monday.

Naira slumps by N3, trades at N1,508/$1 at official window

The Nigerian currency, the naira started the week on a losing note against the American dollar.
The domestic currency lost N3 to trade at N1,508/$1, data from the Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market (NAFEM) has shown.
At the end of trading on Monday, July 1, 2024, the naira lost N3 against the dollar following the rate of N1,505/$1 it recorded on Friday, June 28, 2024.
The intra-day high and low recorded during the day were N1,536/$1 and N1,441/$1 respectively, representing a lean spread of N95$1.

However, the naira gained against the dollar at the parallel section of the market to trade at N1,510/$1, as against the rate of N1,525/$1 it traded the previous trading day representing a gain of N15 for the local currency.
The naira also gained N20 against the British Pound to trade at N1,900£1 as against the previous trading day’s rate of N1,920£1.
The Canadian dollar continues to close flat against the naira to trade at N1,200| CA$1 same as the previous trading day rate of N1,200| CA$1.
The naira lost N10 against the Euro to trade at ₦1,590/€1 as against the previous trading day’s rate of ₦1,600/€1.

Rotary donates 36-bed accommodation to LASUTH for patients’ relatives

As part of efforts to provide support to families of patients accessing care in Lagos, the Rotary Club, Ikeja GRA, has donated a 36-bed apartment to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, for relatives of hospitalised patients.

The donation makes LASUTH the first public hospital in Lagos State with accommodation for patients’ relatives, according to the Chief Medical Director of the tertiary hospital, Prof. Adetokunbo Fabamwo.

The club said the apartment would address the challenge of accommodation that families and relatives face whenever their sick loved ones are hospitalised at the health facility.

Rotary expressed worry that relatives of patients on admission often sleep on bare floors and in their cars at night because there are no accommodations in the hospital, while hotels in the vicinity are very expensive and out of reach for most families.

Physicians say when families face the challenge of supporting a loved one during a hospital stay; the emotional toll can be immense.

According to them, one of the major concerns that arise is finding suitable accommodation for the family members who need to be close to the hospital, stressing that having accommodation for patients’ relatives on the hospital premises ensures that families can easily access their loved ones and medical staff.

This proximity eliminates the need for long commutes, reducing stress and allowing family members to be readily available for support and care.

Unveiling the facility, President of Rotary Club Ikeja GRA, Adeyemi Adesina, said Rotary supported LASUTH with the apartment so that families and relatives of patients admitted at the hospital could have a decent place to have their bath, relax, and have a change of clothing.

Adesina said, “It is a caregiver quarter which is supposed to service those people who come to care for their loved ones within the hospital.

“We saw it as a need for people sleeping on the floor, corridor, and cars because they have a patient within the hospital. We considered it a need that should be met one way or the other.

“We are providing a 36-bed apartment but we know that the need is more than that because due to our culture, we don’t normally abandon our loved one in the hospital. So, we have been able to do that.”

He noted that the facility was provided for anyone having a patient at LASUTH irrespective of social and financial status, adding that the idea of Rotary is giving to society, helping the needy, and making a positive impact on the environment.

“We just want people to have a decent place to take a nap, sleep, take a shower, and have a convenient place to eat. We don’t want you to be stressed taking care of your loved ones. I think this facility will be able to provide those services.

“You don’t need to go too far before you can have a good bath or use the restroom. We spent over N65 million on the facility and we have provided beds. We are still going to be providing fans and air conditioners to ensure that the facility is well furnished and very convenient for people.”

The District Governor of Rotary International District 9110, covering all the Rotary Clubs in Lagos and Ogun states, Ifeyinwa Ejezie, said the provision of the facility will put an end to the era of caregivers sleeping in the corridor and in cars while caring for their loved ones within the hospital.

She said the accommodation was a way of giving back to society and doing good in the world.

“Caregivers will be using the facility and caring for their loved ones in the hospital and I think LASUTH is the first to have such a facility in Lagos”, Ejezie said.

Commending Rotary for the donation, LASUTH CMD, Prof. Adetokunbo Fabamwo, said, “We are excited to have such a facility. You know that in the beginning, we were sceptical; we didn’t know that they would be able to fulfil their promise. But they made us very proud.

“They have been able to fulfil their promise of erecting this structure in a record time. So we are very happy.

“We are going to boast that we are the only public hospital in the state that has provided a structure where relatives of patients can lay their heads at night instead of just sleeping all over the compound and inside their cars and so on.

“We are still relation-dependent health facilities. However, this is not the case in developed countries. The reality is that relatives stay with their patients and they have to sleep.”

Kanu plans appeal after losing N1bn suit against FG

The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Monday, dismissed the fundamental rights suit filed by the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, against the Federal Government.

Justice James Omotosho dismissed the suit for lacking in merit.

But Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimako, told The According, “We will appeal.”

The judge said the IPOB leader failed to provide evidence to sustain his claim that the Federal Republic of Nigeria; the Attorney General of the Federation; the Department of State Services and its Director General, listed as defendants, violated his fundamental rights.

Kanu had, in the suit marked FHC/CS/1633/2023, claimed that the DSS and its Director General violated his right to a fair hearing by allegedly preventing his lawyers from having unhindered interactions with him to prepare him for his treason trial.

He alleged that DSS officials eavesdropped on his conversations with his lawyers, which constituted a breach of his right to a fair hearing.

He further alleged that DSS operatives did not allow his lawyers to take notes during pre-trial meetings with him.

He prayed the court to make “a declaration that the respondents’ act of forcible seizure and photocopying of confidential legal documents pertaining to facilitating the preparation of his defence which were brought to him at the respondents’ detention facility by his lawyers, amounted to a denial of his rights to be defended by legal practitioners of his own choice.”

But in his judgment on Monday, Justice Omotosho said Kanu failed to provide credible evidence to sustain his claims.

Kanu has been on trial since 2015 when he was arrested over his secessionist push. He fled the country in 2017 after being granted bail but he was rearrested in Kenya and repatriated to Nigeria in 2021 and has been in the DSS detention since then.

A clerical officer in the Transport Department of the Vice President’s Office, Innocent Ekhobhiye, won a one million naira cash prize for productivity on Monday, July 1, 2024.
The award ceremony, organised by the State House management as part of efforts to boost productivity among staff members working in the Presidency, recorded 38 State House staff, drawn from various departments, rewarded for their hard work and dedication to duty.
The Permanent Secretary of the State House, Olufunso Adebiyi, who revealed that three of the eight newly appointed permanent secretaries in the Federal Civil Service by President Bola Tinubu were from the State House Clinic, regarded their appointments as a testament to the high level of commitment and dedication of the State House staff.
He listed the newly appointed Permanent Secretaries from the State House, including Dr Obi Emeka Vitalis, Dr Keshinro Maryam Ismaila and Dr Emanso Umobong Okop.
Speaking at the Productivity, Recognition and Staff Reward Ceremony, the permanent secretary reiterated that the gesture was to acknowledge and reward the commitment of the State House staff, especially those who have demonstrated hard work, dedication to duty and value addition in service delivery.
According to him, it was a means of encouragement and motivation for other staff to strive for excellence.
Adebiyi pledged continuous training and retraining of staff, adding that under the State House digitalisation programme, all members of staff would receive the necessary training to enhance service delivery.
“We have already trained no fewer than 500 staff on the digitalisation programme, and in the coming days, every staff, from Grade Level 8 and above, will receive further training in groups of 50.
“We just completed our manpower defence at the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation and it went excellently well.
”Better training and better allowances are coming your way. However, better services are required from you,” he stated.
He also appealed to the staff to take their health very seriously.
”The State House Medical Centre is highly rated among the healthcare facilities of MDAs in the country. Please, let us take care of our health. Why must we go through avoidable health challenges? Let us avail ourselves of the health facilities available to us, and they are available,” he counselled.
Deputy Chief of Staff, Senator Ibrahim Hadejia, while congratulating the award recipients, expressed State House Management’s appreciation for the invaluable contributions of every staff member.
He explained that the financial reward from the Office of the Vice President was meant to further encourage staff to add value to their job schedules.
”It is very wonderful to meet the men and women who form the backroom and operations of the State House. Most times, it is only the political appointees that are visible, but those who do the heavy lifting behind the scenes are not known and recognised.
”I thank the Permanent Secretary for creating this opportunity for staff to be recognised, and I trust this is something that we can do from time to time to keep up your spirits and keep you motivated. We appreciate the work you are doing in the State House,” he said.

After the 38 awardees received their certificates and wrapped gifts from the State House, they each picked a wrapped note from a basket.

Vegetable cooking oil brand, Power Oil has partnered with the Kanu Heart Foundation to facilitate open-heart surgeries in Nigeria.

The founder of KHF, Kanu Nwankwo, announced the partnership recently and stated it was a collaboration aimed toward saving more lives through the foundation’s open-heart surgery programme.

He said the campaign, titled ‘Together We Can Save A Heart’ fitted in with a vegetable cooking oil company whose vision is to promote heart health.

He identified some challenges with receiving healthcare, including limited hospitals, which leads to medical tourism and high exchange rates that make it harder for Nigerians to afford the medical bills, necessitating his foundation’s partnership with Power Oil.

Kanu hailed his partnership with Power Oil as a win-win, as he encouraged consumers to purchase the product as an indirect means of supporting the foundation.

He said Power Oil had a vision of promoting heart health, which aligned perfectly with the KHF mission to help people with heart problems

According to Kanu, Nigeria needs more hospitals that conduct open-heart surgeries, adding that over 200 patients were on the KHF waiting list.

“Having more hospitals in Nigeria would significantly help,” the famed international footballer said.

During the signing of the MoU, Kanu highlighted his foundation’s achievements, including conducting nearly 667 heart operations.

Makers of Power Oil, Tolaram Group represented by the Group Corporate Communications and Event Manager, Temitope Ashiwaju, stated that its impression of the foundation’s integrity inspired the decision to support its work.

“The Kanu Heart Foundation’s integrity and impact over the years have been impressive. We decided that a portion of every Power Oil bottle sold will go towards supporting KHF, ensuring that people with heart conditions receive the necessary care,” Temitope explained.

The Blockchain Industry Coordinating Committee of Nigeria has expressed concerns about the ongoing dispute between Nigeria and Binance Limited, emphasizing the potential negative impact on investor confidence and the country’s international reputation.

In a statement obtained by The According, BICCoN called for a transparent solution to the dispute that promotes trust and collaboration with all stakeholders, including international partners.

BICCoN President, Lucky Uwakwe, advocated a balanced approach to resolving the issue, considering its implications for Nigeria’s blockchain industry and international standing.

He stated that the ongoing legal dispute, which led to the detention of a Binance executive, had created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty in the industry, which could deter potential investors from committing to the Nigerian market.

“BICCoN believes that the Nigerian government should address issues proactively. By taking steps to resolve the current legal challenges fairly and transparently, the government can restore confidence among investors and the international community,” Biccon said.

The Federal Government has faced pressure from the US over the continued detention of Tigran Gambaryan, a Binance executive, in Kuje Prison.

The According reported that 16 lawmakers had written to President Joe Biden, urging him to intervene and secure the release of the U.S. citizen.

Last week, U.S. lawmakers French Hill and Chrissy Houlahan visited Kuje Prison, where they claimed to have found Gambaryan suffering from poor conditions and being denied adequate medical attention.

The lawmakers highlighted these issues, calling for immediate improvements.

On June 14, an Abuja High Court cleared Gambaryan and Nardeem Anjarwalla of tax evasion charges.

In March, the Chief Executive Officer of Binance, Richard Teng, described the detention of its employee, Gambaryan, by the Nigerian government as ‘unjust’ and that it was a “dangerous precedent” for international businesses.

Teng also said that despite Binance’s repeated efforts at constructive engagement and cooperation with Nigerian authorities, Gambaryan remains in detention for ‘spurious’ reasons.

Binance CEO, in a statement to The According on Tuesday, said, “To invite a company’s mid-level employees for collaborative policy meetings, only to detain them, has set a dangerous new precedent for all companies worldwide.”

He added, “The message from the Nigerian government is clear: we must detain an innocent, mid-level employee, a former U.S. federal agent, and place him in a dangerous prison to control Binance.”

The Nigerian government blamed Binance for the naira depreciation, accusing it of fixing exchange rate prices on its platform, the biggest crypto exchange globally.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission accused Binance, Gambaryan, and his fleeing colleague, Anjarwalla of concealing the source of the $35.4bn generated as revenue by Binance in Nigeria, knowing that the funds constituted proceeds of unlawful activity.
