To the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), a message has been sent. Governor Bello Matawalle of the state of Zamfara sent the message.

The governor urged the anti-graft organization to pursue the president’s staffers and members of the departing Federal Executive Council (FEC).

Matawalle made this comment in response to a statement attributed to Abdulrasheed Bawa, the anti-graft agency’s chairman.

Earlier, the head of the EFCC claimed that the agency had sent invitations to all departing governors and commissioners in an effort to launch an investigation.

However, the governor argued that those under investigation should not only include departing governors and commissioners but also those who work at the Presidential Villa.

The EFCC chairman was urged by him to make sure that the investigation was not politicized and that all those found to be involved in corruption were prosecuted.

Deputy Governor:

“Malam Abdulrasheed Bawa, the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, is credited with making a statement in which he claimed to have sent invitations to all departing governors and commissioners in an effort to start an investigation into claims of corruption and abuse of power committed by them while in office.

“While this is proper and praiseworthy because it’s crucial for political office holders to answer for their actions while in office and the EFCC is endowed with the power of investigation, this power must be exercised carefully.

“The investigation needs to be thorough and not biased. The recent invitations and statements made by the EFCC Chair are thus unbalanced, deficient, hypocritical, and unnecessarily skewed.

If Malam Bawa is truly dedicated to an anti-corruption crusade, then this is detrimental to that campaign itself.

“The probe should be thorough and include all officers in an effort to address the obvious knowledge gap and inertia displayed by the EFCC Chair.

I demand that the Federal Executive Council members and officers, who make up the highest level of government in the nation, receive similar invitations from the EFCC chair.
