Military Pension Board starts payment of minimum wage arrears

The Military Pension Board (MPB) has begun paying eligible military retirees on its payroll 25% of the 24 month arrears of minimum wage increments.

The payment is the first of four installments that will be made to all pensioners entitled to the arrears of minimum wage increment on pensions, according to Chairman of the Board Rear Admiral S.A Lawal.

“This payment is basically for arrears of increment in pensions of military retirees who are on MPB payroll between 18 April 2019 and 30 April 2021,” Lawal told Defence Correspondents.

“The Military Pensions Board (MPB) extends its compliments to our esteemed military retirees and wishes to inform them that the Board began paying 25% of the arrears of minimum wage increments to eligible military retirees on MPB payroll on Thursday, February 3rd, 2022,” he said.

“This is the first of four installment payments that will be made to all pensioners who are entitled to arrears of minimum wage increases on their pensions.” Our valued retirees will be pleased to learn that this installment payment plan is the result of discussions and agreement between the Board and the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget, and National Planning regarding quarterly releases of the appropriated sum in the first month of each quarter. In addition, all Next of Kins (NOKs) of deceased military pensioners who are eligible for the same arrears will be paid the minimum wage increments as well as the shortfall in the death benefits previously paid to them. As a result, relatives of deceased military pensioners who died between April 2019 and April 2021 should contact their banks to receive these payments.

“Furthermore, the Board would like to emphasize that this payment is primarily for arrears of pension increments for military retirees who were on the MPB payroll between April 18, 2019 and April 30, 2021.”

“It is also important to note that the consequential pension adjustments resulting from the new National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2019 have no impact on the pensions of senior officers of the rank of Major General and above or their equivalents.” As a result, they are not entitled to the minimum wage arrears of 24 months.”
