According to Israel’s top government health official, the fourth COVID-19 booster shot for people with weakened immune systems has been approved.

The country conducted the first major study into whether a fourth round of Pfizer/BioNTech vaccines would be effective against Omicron earlier this week.

However, because the results are still pending, a final decision on whether or not to use it more widely is still up in the air.

“For now, the shot would be limited to health workers, those over 60, and those with compromised immune systems like cancer patients and organ transplant recipients,” Israel’s top government health official said.

A year ago, Israel was the first country to roll out initial vaccinations, and it was also one of the first to launch a booster program after noticing that immunity waned over time.

Other countries, including the United States, are keeping a close eye on its booster policies as they consider when to offer additional doses.
