Zambian opposition leader Hichilema beats President Lungu in election

Zambian opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema has won a decisive victory in the presidential election.

The results were announced by the Electoral Commission in Lusaka, Zambia’s capital, on Monday.

With all but one of the 156 seats counted, Hichilema received 2,810,777 votes to President Edgar Lungu’s 1,814,201.

“As a result, I declare Hichilema to be the President of Zambia,” declared Esau Chulu, the head of the Electoral Commission.

It would be the third time since the country’s independence from Britain in 1964 that power has changed from the ruling party to the opposition.

Hichilema’s fans are ecstatic all throughout the country.

The candidate for the United Party for National Development (UPND) was previously the CEO of an accountancy firm.
