Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has stated that anyone who attaches religious or ethnic color to the demolition of the Oginiba abattoir in Obio-Akpor council’s Trans-Amadi Industrial layout does not wish the state or country well.
He claimed that, in addition to being a haven for criminal elements, the demolished slaughterhouse’s location in the Trans-Amadi Industrial Area is now considered inappropriate by the State government’s urban renewal policy.
This was stated by Governor Wike during a visit to the former Oginiba slaughter market for an on-the-spot assessment of the ongoing demolition project.
He explained that the State government decided to demolish the market due to a high rate of kidnappings, armed robberies, rapes of innocent women, and other violent crimes within the market’s precinct.

The Rivers State governor revealed that criminal elements operating out of the demolished slaughterhouse amassed a large cache of weapons over the years.
He expressed hope that, with the demolition, residents of Oginiba will be able to breathe a sigh of relief from criminal activity.
Anyone who suggests that the demolition is aimed at a specific ethnic or religious group, he says, is being deceitful.
Several other slaughter markets, such as those in Eliozu, Rukpokwu, and Ogbogoro, he claims, are still operational and have not been turned into a haven for crime and criminality.
