Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has Prohibited a planned Assembly of Several Igbo residents from the Oyigbo Local Government Area of the Country.

The suggested meeting was banned over concerns such assembly could ignite new unrest in the region.

In a statement signed by Paulinus Nsirim, the State Commissioner for Information and Communications, the authorities led security agencies”to make sure that the stated assembly doesn’t have to forestall a breakdown of law and order in the field”.

Although the government isn’t certain about any safety issue, Oyigbo local government area which shares border with Abia country is regarded as a stronghold of the Native People of Biafra (IPOB), a proscribed group that the authorities claims is accountable for its attacks on police officers along with its own centers in the region shortly after the #EndSARS protest in October 2020.

The strikes resulted in a military operation where soldiers and civilians were murdered.

Aside from Oyigbo’s delicate nature after the October episode, the assembly of the community is coming up in a time once the country is grappling with strikes on police formations in Imo, which happens to be a different state that shares a border with Rivers.
